My family and I just landed from a late flight on Christmas Eve and were searching everywhere for a place that was still open to get some dinner. I'm so happy that we ended up here. My sister ordered the honey walnut shrimp, and it was hot, crispy, great flavor balance, and large pieces of shrimp. I ordered the mapo tofu and I'm not exaggerating when I say that it was probably the best mapo tofu I've had. I'm from Seattle where there's a lot of really great Asian food in general, and have had mapo Tofu from a lot of places there. However, this is the most flavorful and balanced mapo tofu I've had. I could really taste the garlic and spices, but was not too spicy and did not over power the actual taste of the tofu itself either. Both of the dishes we got had large portion sizes. Probably could have shared, but honestly it was so good that I didn't want to. I rarely write reviews, but we were so impressed by the food here. Chilli King is a small Chinese-Asian Fusion restaurant located in Glendale near to Old Town Glendale. They have only four tables for dine in and offer soft beverages. The food I tried was all VERY GOOD. I've dined here and more recently I did take out. Proteins are tender. The food is very flavorful and delicious. Portions are also very large. You can also upgrade your steamed rice to fried rice, steamed vegetables, or chow mein. One problem here. This is a small family restaurant. On both my visits they left their young son in charge of the restaurant. He takes orders and payment very well but doesn't explain their take out policy. They won't make your take out order until they are paid. If you call in an order you must pay by credit card for your order to be ready for pick up. If you pay with cash they tell you 10 minutes that is in real life more like 30 minutes.... It's best to call for current hours because they have changed them several times already. Went here last night with my son. Logistics are a PITA. Food was shockingly good. From last night I strongly recommend the egg fried rice. I moderately recommend the orange chicken - but with a catch. If you like orange chicken the way most Chinese restaurants make it, this is a particularly good example, though not spicy (which is good for me as due to illness I can't eat spicy food anymore.... And I used to eat Indian-Spicy with my engineers all the time). However if you've been to Panda Country in Santee, CA (a suburb of San Diego) and that's what you like - this isn't it (they very lightly bread the chicken with corn starch, but only enough to get crispy and hold the sauce). So I tried again tonight and can add as excellent: Wor Wonton Soup - they add just a hint of chili oil which adds a really lovely flavor. Often the shrimp is over cooked - not here! They really nailed it! Only criticism? Could use more vegetables, but that's a preference unique to each of us. House Fried Rice - it's just their egg fried rice with a variety of meats. I expected it to be just like my best friends moms as a kid, and I wasn't disappointed (except she made hers with sausages too - which is also an option on the menu, just not the one I ordered, so I'll have to introduce my kids to that next). House Chow Mein - EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR SINCE WE MOVED HERE IN 2007. Best chow mein in the valley. Now if I can just convince them to add 干煸四季豆 (gan bian si ji dou) to the menu and I'll literally never go to another Chinese restaurant so long as we live here (this is the classic green bean dish you'll find at every dim sum restaurant - I only know it by the Chinese characters so I had to look up the English name - apparently it's Sichuan dry-fried green beans, which you'll sometimes get with the ubiquitous ground pork if in Taiwan). Best vegetarian dish ever. P.S. you can eat inside, they do have tables, just anticipate it being like eating in your aunties kitchen as a kid while she's still cooking. seating for maybe 16 in the entire restaurant. If you're thinking "that sounds like one of those great hole-in-the-wall restaurants that only locals know about" then you're thinking about it exactly right. read more

I live right next door to this place and I loved it when I first moved there. I hadn't been there the last 3 years but I went the other night. We decided to stop by to grab a new menu as I was pretty sure it sure it had changed. I asked the lady at the front, she handed me the menu and that was it. We left to go home to look and order. We called in for a pick up. Lady had a hard time understanding. I totally understand as my family is the same way and we also had multiple Chinese restaurants, but this lady answered the phone with "hello". No thank you for calling chilli king. Just a "hello". We finished placing our order and she just says okay bye. I stopped her in time and was able to ask her how long. She didn't understand that question. And hung up. We never got the time frame or the total of the order. We show up and the price was different than we expected. They apparently had price changes on the menu, totally fine. But when we got the menu from her, she should have told us. But she never did. And these prices weren't a $1 jump, it was $5 jump on some items. All of this was very unprofessional. I ordered the Singapore rice noodles and it tasted ok at first until I ate a piece of the chicken and then it ruined my entire experience. I usually don't go out of my way to order food outside of DoorDash or UberEats but this time I decided to look up Chinese food on Google and this place was close and, being a Dasher for DoorDash, I've picked up several orders from here over the years so I decided to try it out. One of the worst decisions I have ever made if not the absolute worst. Chicken tasted old and sour. Turns out, based on the slight pink color found inside the chicken, it was undercooked. I still believe the chicken was old though and not fresh how all restaurants are supposed to keep their food. To add, this restaurant would not provide me a refund. Apparently the order was placed through a DoorDash service that Google offered and I was unaware of this. Anyway, after trying to find out who should be responsible for providing the refund, I believe it to be the restaurant as that was the only thing I could find on the order confirmation page was their phone number. My boyfriend tried to order a to go order online at 9 pm and they said it would be ready by noon the next day. Okay, obviously that's not gonna work. So he calls and makes an order over the phone and drives to go pick it up. It's only 2 miles away from our house but it took him 35 minutes because when he got there the food wasn't ready. We have been stopping by this place in a small plaza for 3 years now and wondered how it was since we were new to the area and finally decided to give it a try. Quiet small place clean and quaint. Young man at register which is more than likely the son. When ordering he asked and informed of all the choices and payment was fast which for his age he seems efficient! Food was hot and fresh we ordered the sweet and sour chicken with white rice and soup. Portions were big for the price. Flavor was bold. Rangoons were tasty. Got this food delivered and was really impressed with how it tasted. I got the mapo tofu, which had a great amount of mala spice in it, and good ground meat. I also got the walnut shrimp. The shrimp were huge and perfectly fried and the sweet sauce was great. I also got the special fried rice, which had a very mellow flavor, but I don't know that I'd get it again because all the meat in it tasted a bit dry. Overall I was happy with my meal. You got enough food to make you feel full but not overstuff. The best part about not feeling overstuff is because it's not greasy or oily Chinese food. We ordered the orange chicken with noodles and the food was beautiful but not greasy like Panda Express or soggy like a Chinese buffet. It just feel healthy for some reason. The taste is fully there because it all home made and family recipes. Because it locally and family own the service is very very sweet. Ok....the good part- Their pan fried noodles are FIRE! Chinese is my favorite and I go often and have NEVER had lo mein or as they call it "pan fried noodles" that good! They have such a nice flavor! Not overpowering but definitely delicious! You don't even need soy or any sauce on them. I had the honey sesame chicken which was also VERY delicious! My cousin had the walnut shrimp which she loved but not more than the pan fried noodles so the 2nd time that we ordered she got the spring rolls which she really liked and a large pan fried noodles. I got the honey sesame again and shared the noodles with her. I didn't want to throw away the leftovers so I had it for breakfast the next day! I came in late night and ordered a kids meal with chow mein. First they charge me for a dinner which I had to have them out back in my card. I wait longer for my food which is not a problem. I get home and noticed they gave me white rice instead of chow mein. I go back and they tell me they have to chafe me 2.99. Which is confusing because he asked me what did I want white rice, fried rice or chow mein. I only paid 5.99 for my meal which comes with the option I chose. Chilli King is located in a strip mall on Olive & 47th Avenue. The limited seated restaurant, has a very inviting decor. The color of the decor is mostly red, with 2 large decorative mirrors on the walls. Opposite the mirrors are huge pictures of the food from the menus. The owner of the restaurant was my order taker. He was incredibly welcoming and very professional. I ordered, Beef with Broccoli, Orange Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice. The Beef in the Broccoli dish was incredibly tender and the Broccoli itself, was fresh and Crunchy. The Orange Chicken, had great flavor, yet, was over crooked, making most of the chicken inside, tasted crystallized and tough. That dish also lacked sauce and barely had a sweetness to it. The Fried Rice, had Mimi Shrimp in it's preparation. It was very tasty and colorful. My only Strong Suggestion, is to make sure to ask for enough rice to compliment your order. Because, even though I mentioned this, the only Rice in the take out bag, was the Shrimp Fried Rice. Honestly, I first picked this spot because it was the only place open past 11 on a Saturday night. I was expecting mediocre food and just wanted Chinese...I was BLOWN AWAY by how delicious my meal actually ended up being. I not only found a spot that's open late night but also my new favorite place to eat.
