Xiao long bao = absolutely insane. I live in Chicago now and I think about this place all the time. I miss you Szechwan Kitchen

It's been 9 months since my last order, and I decided to give this restaurant another chance. Unfortunately, this experience confirmed why I stopped coming in the first place. I spent over $50 on food, and the quality was extremely disappointing. The General Tso's chicken was basically nothing but breaded chicken pieces -- no vegetables and barely any sauce. The Orange Chicken was also dry and lacked sauce, making both dishes bland and unappetizing. To make matters worse, each entrée is supposed to come with rice, yet only a very small portion was provided. At this point, it feels like this restaurant is cutting corners and poorly managed. I'm generally not someone who leaves negative reviews, but the lack of care, consistency, and food quality is impossible to ignore. This was my last time giving this establishment my hard-earned money. I'd rather spend it somewhere that values its customers and takes pride in the food they serve. read more

I had high hopes for this restaurant based on other reviews, but left disappointed. To start with the good: the egg drop soup as part of my lunch special was thick, creamy and delicious. The lunch special beef dish was a large plate full of food, but the fried rice was cold/room temperature and the spring roll was also cold inside. Finally, while the dish had a wonderful flavorful aroma, it just lacked of flavor. The beef, while tender, just didn't seem to take on any of the taste from the sauce and onions surrounding it. There really was not any service once my food was delivered, and the tablecloth at my table was dirty. This is probably not a place I would come back to. read more

Went for takeout -- the prices are good, but the food wasn't as authentic as I expected. The potstickers were a little too doughy and didn't have much flavor. The Szechwan chicken sauce was sweet and didn't taste like Szechwan flavor at all. When I went in to pick up my order, the bathroom was right by the entrance and had a very unpleasant smell, kind of like underground water. I wanted to try their Szechwan specialty dishes, but after this experience, I'm not sure it's worth it. read more

I originally found this place when I was looking for long bao (soup dumplings). While I did not order them this particular visit, they are amazing and I highly recommend. I've had this place a handful of times and recently visited in-person for the first time. It is a contender for my favorite Chinese spot in Phoenix. When I visited, I was one of only three groups dining. As much as I'd like to keep this place my own secret so I never have to fight for a table, they deserve more patronage. The interior is humble, but comfy. I was greeted immediately and seated at a booth. They also have tables with Lazy Susans for large group dining. The service was stellar. The staff was super attentive, ensuring my water was never empty. They briefly checked in a couple times, but didn't interrupt my conversation with my dining partner. The three dishes I ordered were all phenomenal. The spicy sauce for the wontons was the perfect spice level. They definitely didn't skimp on the chili, but it wasn't so hot that it overshadowed the flavor. There were 12 wontons and the dish was only $8.95. The scallion pancakes, which I *always* order, were delicious per usual. They are layered and flakey like a croissant and the scallion flavor is phenomenal. The vegetable lo mein was also delightful. I opted for chow fun noodles, which are a wider flat noodle. The dish was packed with flavor and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. I am eager to continue eating my way through their menu. However, I've tried enough dishes to confidently recommend them to anyone who loves pan-Asian cuisine. Szechwan Kitchen is serving up authentic Chinese at a price you can't beat. Landed here due to our usual spot being closed. I want to compliment their customer service! Guy up front was so nice and patient even though we came in 30 minutes before closing. We ordered dumplings, green beans, orange chicken with rice. A little pricier than expected however they can be shared with 2-3 people for sure! The star of the dinner was definitely their green beans!!! Couldn't stop eating them on the other hand, their sour chicken was nothing extraordinary. Sauce was okay. Chicken to breading ratio was kinda ridiculous. Felt like it was breading and sauce for a lot of the bites and for the price I would expect a bit more. Rice was rice. No complaints. We ordered take out from here a few days ago. You order online and then go pick up the food. Service was quick. Our food was done before the estimated time. I ordered wonton soup and veggie delight. They changed the mapo tofu recipe. It used to be a darker red with real Sichuan peppercorns, giving that delicious numbing spicy flavor. This is my mapo tofu from yesterday, which had a little bit of spice but not as good as when I had it a year ago. Just more salty with a little bit of spice. Very disappointing that I'll have to try to find a new mapo tofu place. Pluses though: good and affordable lunch specials for about $10 a plate (rice, soup, egg roll, and an entree) but unfortunately I will not go back. read more

I've reviewed this gem before, but wanted to repeat how much I love one of their appetizers that I'll even come in and have as a meal! The Pork Dumplings in Spice Sauce... jumbo pillows of tender dough stuffed with a lovely ground pork. No mild by any means, the chili flakes, sesame oil, soy and whatever else inside brings a perfect ying/yang of flavors and textures, I cut them in half as I eat them so the pork inside is flooded with the spicy sauce. A generous portion of eight comes in an order. I can eat 6 then take home the sauce and extra dumplings as a treat for later. You can also get chicken filling but I love the pork! (Compare my orange chicken to the other pictures on here...) so disappointing as people rave about the orange chicken here. This place has been officially added to my favorite restaurants. I had a friend visiting from Chongqing so we came to check this place out and everything was delicious and authentic. We did get dandan noodles but forgot to get a picture. That and the green beans, I'd say is authentic but more so as an overall Chinese dish whereas the mapotofu and chicken are more Szechuan. Nothing about this place would have me return. The ambience of the restaurant is very stark and bright. The food is just so so and not authentic. Anyone who loves Chinese food wants to find that restaurant with the authentic flavor they loved for years and it is hard to find "that" restaurant. Had a really good lunch here today. It's been awhile since I've had orange chicken so decided on it. The lunch special also comes with soup, a spring roll, and choice of white or fried rice. The spring roll was piping hot, crispy and delicious. It was my first time trying sweet and sour soup and I really liked the flavor. Wifey had the vegetable soup and she said it was really good and very fresh. The orange chicken was very tasty, actually better than I expected. Wife had their Hunan beef lunch special. She wasn't crazy about, said it just tasted like soy sauce. I had a bite and I didn't care for it either. I think the lunch specials are a great deal here. In the area and trying to decide what to have for lunch and found this Chinese restaurant on Yelp of course:) We went during lunch last week around noon. The lunch specials looked good so I decided on Kung Pao Shrimp, $9.95. It came with a choice of vegetable or sweet and sour soup, white or fried rice and an egg roll. It has been forever since I've had sweet and sour soup and it hit the spot! The egg roll was really tasty and satisfying. The kung pao shrimp was good, and tasted fresh. If I had to be picky, it was a bit too saucy and I should've gotten white rice instead of the fried rice as it was just coated with soy sauce. Service was very prompt and friendly and I'd definitely return when I'm in the area again. read more

I was hoping for our dishes to be more flavorful and have more elements to them. It was orange chicken and white rice in my daughter's dish and a slew of sautéed onions with beef and white rice in my meal. On both meals, there wasn't a lot of flavor, almost as if they ran out of seasoning on both dishes that were totally different. Visited Szechuan Kitchen for an early dinner Friday night. The place seems new so I don't want to be too harsh, it's clear they are working some things out. Interior-wise there is ample seating and an array of booths and tables, however, this place is more of a take-out spot. There is a bar that is not serviced as there is no alcohol on the menu- given context clues I'm sure they're working on adding beer/liquor once they acquire the necessary approvals. We ordered the Mapo Tofu and Kung Pao Combo, they served us this with a generous helping of white rice. The serving sizes are huge and easily shareable with a few folks, I don't think every member of your party needs an entree unless you're looking to sample new dishes. The Mapo Tofu was good and it had the right amount of spice. The Kung Pao combo tasted on-par with other local Chinese takeout spots. The real standout was the incredible service we received, our waiter was highly attentive and kind and kept us informed on the status of our order. Insider tip: Make sure they provide you the traditional menu as well. That's where you'll find the familiar favorite Twice Cooked Pork which was unfortunately unavailable when we were there. read more

Let's say you bought fried chicken from Krispy Krunchy Chicken and your household wants crispy beef, you must get it here! My only complaint was there was a BOGO for vegetable fried rice on Uber Eats and the restaurant did not give the free item. I called the owner to let him know the mistake. He told me the kitchen staff made the mistake and I was to contact Uber Eats about the issue and was credited $6+. Just make sure when you order a BOGO via Uber Eats to call the restaurant first so they can either replace the item and deliver it or credit the mistake through food delivery app. read more

My coworkers and I tried this place out and we weren't impressed. I think there are areas to improve. Firstly the owners/staff were friendly and attentive (however we were the only table seated inside). This establishment had many to-go orders being picked up. Another pro is the portion sizes are generous and interior/tables are nice. Very spacious inside. Some of the cons though... while there was a large food menu the drink selections were limited and everything was served in can or bottle. No refills. The Appetizer prices were a bit high - for example: $9 for 2 egg rolls (the regular entrees were priced well, no complaints there). A downside that my Chinese coworker was disappointed about was packaged hot mustard when we were dining in. Putting the mustard in a small bowl would have dressed up the experience. The food tasted a bit off like the fryer oil hadn't been changed for a few days. I think there is a lot of potential and room to grow. One suggestion I have for the bathrooms is to lock the cleaning products up or have outside of customer reach. They shouldn't be easily accessible to children. read more

I tried this restaurant when it first opened and again today and unfortunately it was equally as bad the first time I had it. Im writing a review because the current star rating is not my experience at all. I ordered mapo tofu and stated "no meat" and hot and sour soup. I didn't see my note of "no meat" on my takeout receipt so I went back inside to confirm there was no meat with the unpleasant counter guy and he said there was not. Shocker, I get home and there's meat in it. I still ate it since I'm not vegetarian, but if I was I would have had to toss the entire thing. The only reason I'm giving more than one store was because the mapo tofu was better than I thought it would be. Still doesn't hold a candle to any that I've had in Chicago. The hot and sour soup is the WORST I've ever had! It was a gross sugary mess, how could other reviews say they liked it?? Seriously, I took one bite and had to dump it. Went for lunch where they offer the basic menu rather than the more specialized dinner menu. However every aspect of this was disappointing. Should have realized it when they brought out the food in less than 2 minutes. From the hot and sour soup to their fried rice and the main entre of Szechuan chicken. All of them turned out to be similar to the taste pf Panda. The rice was cooked with dark soy giving it a super dark look but no "wok hay". Peaceful. I went because I searched Yelp with a craving for chop suey. The reviews & ratings were very good. The restaurant has been there for years but based on reviews it looked to be under new ownership. I had never been to it under its prior owners but decided to check it out under the new one. Walked in and it was clean and not crowded but from those coming in I realized they did quite a few to go orders. I then was asked can I help you - suggestion better to ask dining in or take out order. It came across as if the fluffy black lady wasn't supposed to be there. Then the waiter initially not friendly at least to me rather cold. Although he was the only waiter but he had only 3 tables. He later was more courteous but did not start out that way. I noticed he was more talkative to the Latino ladies who came in asked them about their day. I nor the booth across from me got that interaction. The food you get is healthy portions. My favorite thing was the hot & sour soup thick and loaded. The rest of the food was good. I will possibly go back. I did the vegetable egg foo young and I had to ask if they had egg rolls which did not appear on menu. I thought it was decent meal but the reviews built it up to be more than what I got upon my visit. My thoughts ok Chinese food. read more

This place is Amazing!!! 5 STARS I write this as I eat my orange chicken, house lo mein and fried rice leftovers!! We're new to this area and have been exploring new restaurants. I think this is the best Chinese food we have ever had. A big claim I know but just try this place and you'll see what I'm talking about. We picked up a to go order - Ambiance was clean. Service was excellent and fast. Food was hot and delicious. I just want to say whoever is cooking here or to the owner.. you are a treasure to the community!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH.
