Chillingsworth gets a solid 3 stars from me. Food is 4.5 Service/ambiance 2 stars We reserved the bistro - but were seated in the "Gold Room" which was reminiscent of someone's grandparents house. Our server Emily was scattered- at times attentive, at times disappearing for 30 minutes leaving us without water. She did bring us a round of champagne to apologize for the wait our table endured waiting for our entrees. We were rushed to get our order in " before the table of 12" but in the end, our food came out after theirs. The steak frites was delicious as were most of our entrees and appetizers. The ricotta gnocchi with corn and peas and mushrooms was also exquisite What left a bad taste in my mouth was how the host was so hospitable to the party in front of us, but when it came our time we were seated in a room we didn't reserve and the hostest coldly stated "we are fully boooked tonight."- We know- we made the reservation for the bistro. We tried to confirm the reservation over the phone, but no one answered. I would recommend coming with an ample helping of patience. Food was great. I had haddock, usually not my favorite, but it was really good. My son and wife had scallops, also very good. My daughter's boyfriend had really good duck breast - almost as good as I get in France. Ambience inside is dated. Chillingsworth was long ago the first fine French restaurant on the part of Cape Cod. It appears that they have not updated the interior in 40+ years. It is a bit charming but also quite stuffy. We had asked for a "bistro" table outside in our on-line reservation, but they seated up inside. The outside seating in the summer is more pleasant. As many other reviewers have noted, the service and kitchen can be erratic. It took a long time for our order to be prepared. The waitress, who was good, comped our table with a glass of wine for each of us. read more

Loved everything about this place! Went to a Wedding that held their reception here and I loved the ambiance, food, drinks and the service! The bartenders were literally the best! Great drinks, conversations and super helpful. Julie Thompson made the best drinks. I'm someone who doesn't enjoy the taste of alcohol so she made me a cosmopolitan and it tasted so delicious, exactly like a strawberry lemonade! Chillingsworth has a charming and delightful garden location or eat inside the antique home. We sat in the garden room surrounded by geraniums. The food is sublime, we had gazpacho, foie gras, truffle risotto and grilled duck. Everything was cooked to perfection. We finished with Angel cake and sticky toffee pudding. Delicious! Our waitress was so kind and gave great recommendations. Even with a full dining room the food arrived timely and at a perfect temperature. I took my fiancée here 25 years ago when I proposed to her. Fabulous dinner in the main dining room. The service and food has remained outstanding until the last 3-5 years. Now, most often, the main dining room isn't open and all are relegated to the bistro. Although the fare remains outstanding the service and attention to detail is lacking. We've eaten here a number of times. The food is consistently excellent. One standout that you have to request specially is the lobster pizza. It's the best pizza on the Cape! However, we love everything on the menu. Make sure to get the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It's one of our favorite desserts anywhere. The service is first rate as well. Where to start... I was told this would be an excellent place to go out on "date night" for some fine dining. When we called for reservations, we were told the dress code was business casual and no jeans. So we dressed up for a fancy restaurant. On arrival we were seated in "the bistro" at a table that I can only liken to a picnic table, complete with a bench seat and a long granite table. We were seated at one end of the table and another couple (dressed in jeans) were seated at the other end. (Not even a table cloth mind you). I said to myself, 'this doesn't feel like fine dining to me". So here we are dressed up and sitting at a picnic table for fine dining. Awkward. My spouse opened her napkin containing the silverware and it was dirty like someone had already used it. The waitress apologized and brought another, Creepy. We ordered beverages, diet coke for me, coffee for my spouse. The diet coke was completely flat. I asked for another and the waitress brought the can back so I could open it myself. Again, completely flat. At this point the waitress brought back whom I assume was a bartender to "taste" the diet coke, He agreed and said the diet coke was flat. (As the whole case must have been and he gave me a regular coke to drink instead). Being diabetic, I should have refused but I was thirsty. Then my spouse called the waitress over because her coffee wasn't hot at all. The waitress apologized and brought her an espresso, explaining that the coffee machine wasn't working. (My spouse doesn't even like espresso). Shortly thereafter a woman came to our table and asked how was everything. (I assume she was one of the owners). We explained the situation to her and she only had to say, "well it's the bistro". Like seriously? We were never told we would be sitting in a "bistro". She seemed like she couldn't care less. Our food finally started coming out. My spouse had the lobster bisque. It was served semi-warm and was a puree type soup. I would have expected "some" lobster in it. I had the snails, (couldn't they at least have TRIED to spell escargot on the menu? It wasn't bad though. Not the best, not the worst I've had. Finally our entrees came out. I had the Elk and my spouse had pork medallions., Both entrees were presented well and tasted very good. The waitress came to the table and said, "We will take care of you for all the trouble tonight" When it came time for the check we noticed all they did was remove the stale diet coke and my spouses coffee. How un-classy is that? Surely, not enough to make me ever want to go back there. My spouses sentiments exactly as well. Too bad, I had high expectations for this place. read more

From hockey-puck steak to lost credit card... - Outdoor seating looked like someone's backyard (Where's the rake?!) - Dirty seat "cushions", which were basically pads; the same that my father-in-law uses to protect his knees when he weeds his garden - Waitress was frenetic - waitress noted that the restaurant was understaffed and made our table feel as if we were an inconvenience to serve - We we're forced to put our entire order in at once, which we usually don't do to avoid being rushed. We were told that the food would be "perfectly timed", which resulted in our entrees coming out just as we were barely finishing our appetizers. We were indeed rushed. - Two orders of mussels: one bowl was very sandy - My mother-in-law ordered the steak special medium-rare but it came out well-done. It also could not be re-ordered because they ran out of the special so my mother-in-law had to settle for the halibut, which she didn't really want. During this process, the waitress suggested that my mother-in-law had indeed ordered the steak well-done instead of recognizing the mistake. - When it came time to pay for the meal, the steak was comped but the replacement halibut was not, which was surprising considering how long the second meal took to come out. My mother-in-law ended up eating alone, an experience we expected the restaurant would want to make-up for, along with the botched steak, by comping the halibut in addition to the steak. - At some point during our time at Chillingsworth, the waitress encountered a dog that was brought by a couple seated further away from us. She knelt down, pet, hugged, and scratched the dog before getting up and continued serving other tables. - During the payment process, my father-in-law used his credit card to take care of the bill. The waitress came by to pick up the card and we sat for an abnormally long time waiting for her to return the card. She eventually came out asking if we were all set. We told her that we were still waiting for the credit card to be returned and she insisted that it was given to me. I had already left with my wife, who had had it at this point. This led to many phone calls asking if I had the card, which I didn't. It was only when my mother-in-law went into the restaurant when she discovered that a bartender had been holding the card. Apparently the card had been returned to a different table. When that table didn't recognize that card, they had their server take it back (thankfully), who then left it with the bartender. The most irritating part of all this was the blame that was placed on us, similar to the overdone steak, for something that restaurant should have taken responsibility for. read more

9/13/24; We ordered three takeout meals. They were not ready when promised. The portions were so small for every meal, we thought there had been a mistake; no mistake. The entrees were the size of appetizer. Elk: 2 small pieces of meat (4 bites) with six small pieces of potato, 3 brussel sprouts and onion covered with a reduced sauce, $50. Seared halibut: 1.5"x4"x1", wasn't seared, half a cup of assorted vegetables (mostly pieces of tomato) and three table spoons of couscous all smothered in butter; very greasy, $50. Angel hair pasta with lobster; very little lobster, pieces of shells included, mostly pasta and pieces of tomatoes, Again very oily, $45. Not worth the price they charge. The meals lacked any unique or memorable flavor. Presentation was very sloppy even for takeout. I expected more from this restaurant. If you still want to try Chillingsworth, be prepared be underwhelmed and to eat before or after you go. read more

Great find! Too bad we waited so long to visit the Bistro! So cute, inside and out. Great staff! Fabulous menu (so many apps I wanted 10!) and wine selection. We had the tuna tartarand roasted beets app to start (yum! ESP the beets!) my husband, who rarely eats duck "had" to try it as this is a French place, and cleaned his plate! I had a delicious swordfish dish and we shared a sticky pudding for Dessert even though stuffed! One thing to note: I'm a pescatarian (who only eats 3 kinds of fish) so I usually avoid French places because there usually isn't much for me. This place had TOO MUCH too choose from. Delightful atmosphere, delectable menu, divine dining experience. We came to Chillingsworth looking for a night of fine dining not really knowing what to expect. We happened to arrive for a restaurant week dinner experience with a wonderful array of selections for a 3 course meal. There's something to be said for a meal where every course leaves you excited about the next. Each of our party ordered unique dishes for the first two courses For the first course: Melon soup with whipped cream and mint leaf French Onion Soup with gruyere Creole Lobster Bisque with cream and fried sage For the second course: Grilled lamb chops with Parmesan rissotto, with herbed lamb mushroom sauc, and broccoli Seared Duck breast with red and green lentils with nectarines, and French beans Beef tenderloin with potato pie, French beans and tomatoes For dessert two of us orders the pistachio creme brûlée (with candied pistachios!) and our third ordered the vanilla creme brûlée. A repeatable experience. We loved every bite and left more than sated. The server was aware and capable of offering substitutions for various dishes to meet the dietary (celiac) needs of our party. The appetizer choices were slim but unsurprising given the restaurant week menu, but of the entrees there were many options available unlike the usual 3. For dessert options again, fewer selections yet they offered a cobbler sans crumble as well. No issues of cross contamination. read more

AMAZING!! The service and food were outstanding!! Our server Cathy was so awesome with her honest recommendations. Being a foodie for 35 years along with my wife and we have been fortunate enough to eat at the best restaurants in many countries for decades I was taken aback by the quality and presentation of the food. We are not from the cape but our friends said this was there favorite restaurant so the 4 of us went this evening. The lobster pizza priced at $40 initially I thought was expensive, then I ordered it and we'll the price by far justified the best pizza I have ever had from Italy to New York to philly. The oysters, pasta and fish were also over the top! I don't leave reviews often but when I receive amazing service and amazing food I feel compelled to share our experience to support local restaurants. This is NOT fine dining. The menu has been combined with Chills. They don't mention that when you call reservations. The food is mediocre. I ordered veal short rib which I sent back bc it was all fat. I ordered appetizer scallops which were fine. My wife got the roasted chicken which was good. If I had known it was not going to be fine dining we would have gone elsewhere. It was a bd dinner. I'd say it is not what it once was. Check that box. The service was mediocre at best. We were in Brewster for a family vacation, but my husband and I wanted a chance to get away for a quick drink and bite on our own. We tried the Brewster Fish House, but it was way too crowded, so we made our way to the bar at Chillingsworth. We were incredibly impressed with both the drinks/food and the service. Again, we didn't eat a full meal, but we shared a half dozen oysters and the tuna tartar while sipping a glass of wine for me and a dirty martini for my husband. The oysters were excellent, especially when compared with the more expensive, smaller and less tasty ones we had the night before. The tuna tartar was also excellent and my husband remarked on the quality of the martini as well. As if that wasn't enough, the bartender Carl went out of his way to make us feel welcome. He overheard me ask my husband for an olive from his martini and brought me a few without my even knowing he had heard. We chatted with him for a while and he then went to the kitchen and brought us a plate of warm marinaded olives with kalamata bread, since he had learned in the course of a few minutes how much I love olives. Again, he did all of this completely unasked and free of charge. We were very impressed and recommended it to the rest of the family when we went home. It isn't cheap, but it isn't as expensive as many of the nearby restaurants. The total for 3 drinks, the two appetizers and a generous tip for Carl was around $80. Overall, we loved this place and will definitely be back. Can't say anything about the main dining room, but the bar is great for a quick bite and good drinks. read more

The food at Chillingsworth is excellent. Flavors, dinner entrees, drinks, all of it is delicious. The only challenge we have is the experience of making reservations and arrival. We have arrived a few times, having made a reservation, and they can't find it. They struggle and can't seem to figure out how to problem solve. A couple was in front of us with this same issue and it took them almost 10 min to finally say they can in fact be seated. There was plenty of seats available and nearing the end of the night. Train the host staff on how to manage the process and solve problems and you will get 5 stars ! read more

Incredibly disappointing experience - called on a Monday afternoon to secure dinner reservations for Wednesday night. Talked to a nice gentleman who confirmed us and took down our phone number and even shared about dress code. Showed up at restaurant and no record of reservation. Host was rude and mentioned only Anna does our reservations. Guess I must have dementia at this point and imagined the whole episode. I called back same number I called on Monday and got the host. Lessons to learn: 1) don't count on a Chillingsworth reservation 2) it has the trappings of a place you would take your grandmother on a night she left assisted living for a nice meal. We went for dinner last night at Chillingsworth and were extremely disappointed. 1 star would be generous. Let me explain why ... we had reserved a table outside using their online reservation system months ago and were told by the hostess upon arrival that they could only accommodate us at the bar indoors. As some of my family members are immunocompromised, this was not an option and most of the tables outside were unoccupied. The hostess asked the manager twice if we could dine at one of the vacant tables outdoors and we were told emphatically no. The hostess was rude and treated us with a lack of decency and respect. For the amount of money you pay to dine at this establishment, you would expect service that is commensurate with common decency. Thankfully there are plenty of nice alternative dining options in the area and we enjoyed a lovely dinner nearby at another restaurant where we were welcomed and enjoyed a wonderful meal. We hope the owners at Chillingsworth address this issue; otherwise, it won't be long before patrons such as ourselves go elsewhere. Went there tonight as part of Restaurant Week We were charged $1.00 extra because we dared to order our martinis straight up (as opposed to "on the rocks." ) The *(clearly inebriated owner came by to check on our meal. She proceeded to regale us with a story about some customer who had been unhappy, and whom she'd told in no uncertain terms "don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out." Really enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere here. We sat in the bar section that was adorably decorated in an eclectic blend of antiques and nautical pieces. The food was wonderful. I had a lovely Caesar salad that had just the right amount of dressing and served with Borsin style cheese on a crustini. We also tried the tuna tartare and mushroom crustini and both were wonderful. The star of the evening, however, was the lobster pizza. It was overloaded with cheese but the crust could handle it. And although it could have used more lobster, there was still enough to give it great flavor. I know I'll want to return for some more of that pizza! read more

Tonight we had dinner to celebrate a successful surgery.. All started well and the food was exceptional but the service simply was abysmal. Our waitress all but disappeared after taking a wine order to go with or entrees and never came back. We had to hunt down a knife after our salad plate was removed so we could eat one of the entrees. We took a knife off another table that was set for dinner and our water was never refilled as well. So as wonderful as the food was we have elected to give the experience a D-. Someone needs to be a lead overseeing the staff during the dinner service. It's will be awhile before we head back. read more

Where to begin? I had been wanting to come here so my husband and I made a reservation for our anniversary. We ordered a Bibb lettuce salad and the lettuce was legit brown. The escargot was so bland that it tasted like it was sitting in pools of water rather than garlicky butter. I order the beef tenderloin cooked medium rare and it came out well done. By this point the food had been bad enough that I didn't feel guilty sending back a dish...however the waitress soon informed me that the tenderloin was cooked in advance and then reheated to order. So, since it had already been cooked to a state of well done there was no way to give me a piece that was medium rare. We have been eating at Chillingsworth for about 25 years--the fine dining, wine dinners and The Bistro---many times over. We dined at the Bistro tonight, and while the food was delicious, the service at our table and the tables around us was so bad, I thought we must be on Candid Camera! We walked in pretty early and the place was empty. They squeezed us on the edge of a communal table for ten, despite being just two. They gave us a chair with a huge hole in the center of the seat. When we asked for a comfortable place to dine and a seat with a broken bottom. The hostess went into a huge explanation as to why she could not move us despite being 99% empty--- none of it made any sense. Kerri our server, was so disorganized and slow, I thought she must be "on something". The most agonizing part of the evening was when we watched Kerri give every table around us incorrect desserts and miscalculated every check. Everyone was frustrated and complaining. It took us fully 30 minutes to get that incorrect check at that. After 40 minutes, and still no correct check, we told her flat out we were leaving and assumed our meal was on her since she didn't seem to want to help us in our thwarted efforts to pay. On the way out, we spoke to the lovely diners at the next table who were just as upset about the service as we were. The shocker was that the next table guest was actually off duty server from this restaurant.......Chillingsworth!! So I guess it's good to know we were not discriminated against by Kerri The Server, she treats her own colleagues as lousy as she does the general public. Get your act together Chillingsworth---change out your broken down furniture and retrain your staff or you'll soon be without many of your long time fans. read more
