It was their Circle Farm Tour Christmas celebration, and I was soon offered a lavender shortbread cookie (yum!) and a cup of hot apple cider. Yes please! They were making it right there on the little cast iron stove at the back, from apples that had been pressed on site. The store is well stocked with preserves and sauces and spice rubs made from some of the farm's own produce, with emphasis on garlic and lavender, as well as bath products by local companies and Vista D'Oro artisanal jams. They even have taste testers on hand so you can try just about any of the sauces before buying. Of course, that can make it more difficult to decide (Barn Burner Garlic Sauce +++1). My friends and I wandered a bit around the farm before going into the cafe ... since it's winter, many of plants are well, let's say dormant because lavender is a perennial. But walking around the barn and down to the garden, you get an idea of the abundance of herbs they grow here. Not to mention the views of the snow-covered mountains - beautiful! Several of us had lunch in the cafe - as mentioned, it's a small space but they accommodated our group very gracefully. The menu changes according to what's in season - in fact, it's just a little chalkboard listing the day's choices. Everything is fresh and made from scratch - a locavore's dream! And it's fun to watch the chefs working away in the open kitchen - complete with mirror on the ceiling so you can see what's happening on the counter. (I think they offer cooking classes as well.) I had a pasta with a squash sauce with red cabbage, pomegranate and orange salad. And the chocolate pate for dessert with a local cranberry sauce and whipped cream ... light in texture, rich in flavour - perfection.

From the previous reviews I am guessing that at one time it was located where the Yellow Deli is now. The baking from the Preserved Seed is now used in the Yellow Deli next door. On my last visit I found out that The Preserved Seed will also soon stock soups from the Yellow Deli. The bakery has a small but impressive selection of fresh, home made (and some gluten free) breads. They also have a small selection of date squares, etc. The spelt date cinnamon bread is highly recommended, kind of like cinnamon raisin bread - very delicious and healthy too! They have a small selection of hard to find organic items, pantry items, baking products, fresh organic produce, natural health care, natural skin care items as well as incense and other similar items. One of the things I love to buy here are the 100% Beeswax Candles from the Kootenays. The prices are the best I have seen on most organic items, and the prices on the other items seem to be better as well. The staff are pleasant, friendly and helpful. When driving past Chilliwack I now add an extra few minutes to my drive to pop in here, browse and inevitably pick a few things up.

The inside of the cake was moist and had a nice texture however, Just a little bit of feedback the icing on the cake was a thick slab of butter. Usually butter cream is sugary sweet and rich, but the cake must have been made by a trainee, because they forgot to add flavour tot he icing. It must have been a mistake because it tasted odd. I live in Honolulu and was going to Maple Ridge to see family & looking for 3 cakes to celebrate 3 birthdays, a gluten free cupcake, a delicious, special birthday cake for my sister & a regular cupcake. I spoke with Sara, a friendly, knowledgeable person. We discussed their popular cakes and I selected their black forest cake because Sara told me the cherries were special and delicious. My niece said that her gluten free chocolate cupcake was moist and had a good texture. I "accidently tasted the buttercream frosting and it was very good. The black forest cake was phenomenal, I have never tasted a better cake, and yes, the cherries were scrumptious! The whipped cream frosting was rich, delicious and tasted like 100% whipped cream. Dark chocolate shavings generously adorned the sides of the cake with plenty of loose shaving to have a taste. All 8 adults raved about the cake and agreed that it was the most delicious thing that they have ever tasted. When we arrived to pick-up the cake, we could not resist the yummy, well displayed cakes, muffins, giant cookies & variety of other baked goods. I selected a mini ginger bundt with cream cheese filling & crystalized ginger, pecan orange giant cookie & oatmeal raisin giant cookie. The bundt had a good balance of molasses complimented the cream cheese frosting. When I visit Maple Ridge again, I will be sure to stop by to load up on their goodies & another black forest cake...unfortunately, my niece is celiac and unable to indulge in most of the pastries.
