Last time we ate here, I got the lunch chili rellenos with raisin sauce. The sauce was good, but it's sweet and ckashes with the pepper. This time I got the ranchero sauce. I am not fond of that sauce, either. It's very mild and cooked with green peppers. Cheese sauce is one of the choices they offer for chili rellenos. Most places charge extra for cheese sauce. What's unusual about Chimi's chili rellenos is that they are fried crispy. Next time I am going to get cheese sauce on the side so the crispiness isn't destroyed by sauce. Last time, Dan got a lunch chicken enchilada and substituted tomatillo sauce for ranchero sauce. Their tomatillo sauce is good but not worth the substitution charge so this time he got a wet burrito, which he didn't like. It was filled with too much rice. Old school ! Everything is great here. Decor is old but it's clean. You know more than sit down and chips and salsa have arrived. Servers are experienced and food comes out quickly. We placed a large cater order on 3/13. The woman who took my order talked me into several things we really didn't need. Took my card over the phone- $338. We went to pick it up on 3/21 and they didn't have our order. I called and they hung up on me. We went inside and they stated they don't have an order. I requested a Manager. They spoke very broken English so I spoke Spanish. She then conveniently spoke English quite well. I explained I placed a large order a week prior for pick up at 5pm. They said, give us 30 minutes and we will have it ready. I said, nobody has apologized. Nobody has offered a discount. They offered a quarter of queso. Ridiculous. We got the order and while unpacking i realized they forgot a tray of taquiitos. The food was dry. The salsa sucks. So much food for so little price. If you maximize everything available, you could save some moolah and get more food. Chimi's gives you a free dessert with each Yelp check-in. To get it you have to be persistent with your server, asking her to speak to the manager. I had to show the manager who said she has never seen it. Nevertheless, I was able to get a free dessert in the end. When I walked in, there was no one in the front so I just found myself a table. Server came by after a few minutes. They gave me 2 chips and 4 salsa. I was really confused and for a moment thought I was special. As it turned out, they thought I had 4 people. After I told them that I was by myself, they took 1 chip and 3 salsa away. I no longer felt special. For the entree I had the chicken enchilada with rice and refried beans for a mere $9.99. My inexperience of Mexican cuisine caused a poor lapse of judgement. I wanted quesadilla but got enchilada and quesadilla mixed up. The food at Chimi's was good. I really couldn't tell the difference between the food here versus other places. Food tasted the same to me. Chimi's offers 6% cash back through Upside. My Chase credit card happens to offer 7% cash back on restaurants this quarter. I ended saving 13% on a $10.84 tab. In addition, a free dessert on top. No matter how much I disliked the service at Chimi's, I can't help but to recommend. With so many benefits, it is crazy for me not to recommend. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how good the food was! It's a smaller Mexican restaurant and honestly, I didn't expect much at first because of the lower rating, but it definitely exceeded my expectations. They were not busy when I got there and it was a sign. The service was very slow and the food took 30 min for 6 people. They barley refilled the drinks. My food was good but nothing special. My colleagues had hit or miss with the food. They charge $1.50 for cheese sauce. This is more than any other place in town. I have been coming to Chimi's for years. . . like 15+. My favorite by far is the Harvard location but that is likely becuase it is smaller and even though i'm not in as often as I used to be - some of the staff still recognize me and remember how much I love the White Queso. Staff is always friendly and food is always good. Service is usually quick (I try to avoid the rush times) but I don't feel rushed and am comfortable to sit and chat with my dinner companions. This place was a good solid "ok". Nothing special on the interior, it was clean, which is a bonus... The bench seats really hurt my back. If you come here and have a bad back, my suggestions is to try the chairs. The service was a good solid "ok" too. Not a lot of people here, but the service was a bit slow, my wife's order was also wrong. But the servers are nice. The food was also decidedly average. This is the first time I have eaten here. This small restaurant is about a 1/3 of a mile south of 51st and Harvard. This sits alone in the middle of the block away from all other restaurants. Evan with that they still have a loyal following with the regular visitors. I love the smaller "mom and pop" restaurants as the service is usually better along with the food and this case was no different. We got the large white queso, which was enormous, and very tasty. I ordered the fajita chicken Chimichanga and was not disapointed. This place is great and will be back here for a simple tex-mex meal. read more

One star off since they only had one person waiting tables and while it wasn't super busy there should have been at least two people taking care of the front of the house. There was a bit of a wait to get seated, but again it's because they only had one guy out front handling it all. The food was really good and reasonably priced. My daughter got 2 of the Border enchiladas with house rice and black beans. She cleared her plate and really enjoyed them. I got the Vegetarian Platter with refried beans and Mexican rice. I cleared my plate as well. The food was hot and tasty and a good portion for the price. The inside is a little dark and dingy, by I would eat here again. read more

I brought my kids and their grandmother out to Chimi's tonight and it was amazing! I'm always looking for Mexican Restaurants to try and this one really stood out. For the way the building was packed, we were served quickly with the servers appearing very serious and polite. Chips and drinks were refilled regularly. There was nice, relaxing music in the background while we ate, which really made the atmosphere nice and peaceful. The food looked so delicious, and it was! My family was very appreciative of the meals. The only thing I have to add was; I requested no beans (along with a few other things) on my nachos. I got the meal and I was very satisfied as it seemed they had taken off everything I had asked for, although when I picked up a chip there was beans all over it! While I could deal with this, if I had had a lethal bean allergy, this could send me to the hospital! But overall, we all enjoyed the meal very well and that was my only complaint. read more

We dined here yesterday evening and it was pretty good, but not as good as what remembered. Our sever was attentive and greeted us soon after being seated. We ordered our favorite item, steak fajitas, served with baracho beans and corn tortillas. I love squeezing lime juice on my fajita and when I asked for some lime slices they said they were out of limes. Out of limes at a Mexican restaurant? The server was apologetic and offer lemon slices, which seemed to suffice but was not as good as a lime. Also, we were seated at a table that was located below an air duct that was dripping condensation on us. Surely they would have noticed this prior? Anyhow, we took it upon ourselves to move to another table before the food arrived. I will return to this restaurant, but left with a mixed review on my experience. I don't want to lower my expectations for this place, but until proven otherwise that's where I stand. read more

I used to LOVE Chimi's, but I was extremely disappointed after dining here today. Since moving away, it has been many years since I last visited and the food quality has decreased enormously. The cheese dip has very little cheese flavor. The rice was bland. The salsa is not the same recipe and tasted like something from a can. The cheese used in the quesadillas and enchiladas also had no flavor. It was like eating cheap bland cafeteria food. The prices were cheap for the quantity of food and the service was outstanding (they are the reason for 2 stars), but this is not the Chimi's I remember. The food tastes like they are cutting costs. I know it's difficult for restaurants these days, but I would have gladly paid more for the recipes I remember from years ago. Hopefully the owners will listen and do something. Ate there on recommendation from someone who told me they have the very best salsa around. Salsa was good but not spectacular, the service was terrible. Hostess right when I walked in was short with me and sarcastic and unfriendly to the point I had to laugh, thought maybe she was having a bad day. There was a problem with my order and the waiter didn't come back to check on me for so long, I'd started eating the sides since those were correct and I was starving. My family and I go here almost every time we eat out. The salsa is amazing, with the Dad's salsa being my favorite. Even throughout these hard times Chimi's always proves to be our favorite. This location is very hit/miss. I've gone in the past and had an awesome meal, great service, and fair pricing. Recently I've gone and tried the fish tacos. The whole plate was dripping in grease, we had terrible service, and I was overcharged. I would say I hope the next time we visit there will be good service, but I'm not sure we'll be back. This place is not terrible so I can understand why in the neighborhood would come here for convenience. I was given two salads which were both terrible. The standard had way too lunch canned tomato sauce flavor and not much else. What I assume would be their "hot" salsa had more flavor, mainly from black pepper, but still didn't deliver on overall taste, so *2* stars for salsa, because I think that's an integral component to Mexican and Tex-Mex restos. The rice was not much better, and reminded me of cafeteria food: lacking in flavor and presumably prepared hours before in massive quantities which can be noticed in the taste. The black beans weren't bad, but they were simply that: a side of black beans. The fajita steak chimichanga I ordered was an ample portion. The filling was all right with the sauteed onions an peppers with cheese, although the steak was a bit too overcooked it seemed a bit dry. We were visiting family in Pawnee, OK for Thanksgiving & didn't want to cook the day after so we thought we'd drive over to Tulsa for some good Mexican food. We have been to the other Chimi's location and wanted to spend our money with a smaller type restaurant than a big chain. The food did not disappoint!!! From the chimichanga & enchiladas to the street tacos and combination burrito - everything was superb! My only complaint would be that with the COVID restrictions, the staff really had no solutions for our party of 6 other than for us to wait. We arrived after a party of 5 & they only have three 6 top tables. They offered to seat us a two separate booths in the back, but they would not have been together, so we opted to wait. When shown the booths my husband asked to put a table & a booth together, but the staff said it would block a 4 top table. So we waited. No keep in mind no other walk-in guests came in for 20 minutes after we arrived. Then a couple came in who had clearly been there a lot. Great!!! Repeat business is what makes a small business grow. They did not talk to the hostess/waitress, just came in and sat at the table that would've been blocked had they accommodated our family sooner. The two booths in the back that they tried to seat us at were still unoccupied...why couldn't they have seated us & sat the returning couple in the back? It just seems like creative thinking doesn't exist. When they told us we'd have to wait, I honestly felt like they didn't want us to patronize the restaurant. I understand that COVID has its own rules, but there was no reason to not empower the staff to think creatively with seating. They still would have utilized the seating within regulations. read more
