This probably should be a two star review but Ricardo's is an institution. We arrived around 6 PM on a weeknight. There were not that many diners seated (because, my god, this is a huge place) but there was a wait list. When I went up to put our name on the list, I didn't hardly get an acknowledgement, just a "We'll let you know." Finally, someone who must have been the manager showed up and he started seating people. We were seated and our server, while super sweet and apologetic, was very harried and scattered. We ordered drinks and he did go behind the bar to get them himself, so cudos. We ordered a small queso and had to remind him. He did bring us a large one to make up for the wait. The salsa was very plain--almost like tomato sauce with a bit of red pepper. Salt helped it. We always love their chile rellenos and we both ordered those. I also got a chicken enchilada and the chicken was really good. The last time we were here was right after COVID so I guess this is our five year visit. food the food was very tasty and acheived a unique balance between americanized mexican food and traditional cuisine. going into the experience, i'd been to the restaurant at least once before, and though i do not remember what i'd got before, knew i was wanting beans to celebrate what spanglish boys like me refer to as frijole friday. also remembering that the restaurant features a lunch menu, i'd asked the server about that, although after responding to the question of what i wanted to drink with sierra mist, and receiving that drink with chips and salsa quickly upon sitting at the table. then, the server pointed me to the lunch menu and explained that the lunch menu comes with a choice of 2 options among those on the list, with rice and beans being an option, as well as a side that you can add to your 2 choices for the special. and considering 2 lunch entree choices plenty for me, i ordered the rice and beans along with a soft cheesy taco, which i'd narrowly chose instead of the chile relleno, another vegetarian option that looked tasty. nonetheless, the soft cheesy taco was quite tasty, similar to a cheese enchilada, not wrapped and covered in queso. further, the beans and rice were each delicious as is, and the queso left from the soft cheesy taco added a convenient, complementary sauce to mix with the beans and rice for an even more complex taste, though admittedly one that comes at a small nutritional cost. for real though, who has beans and rice, plus chips still in the basket, and leaving queso on the plate? not to mention, the chips and salsa were tasty too, with the salsa on the sweet side out of the salsas i've tried at restaurants. and lastly, to get the review full circle, the sierra mist i ordered initially added to the meal a refreshing beverage that complemented well the spanglish of the food order. service the server, ms tara, waited on the table with excellent customer service skills. in addition to almost immediately asking for a drink order and delivering it, plus chips and salsa, quite quickly also, the server gave about the perfect amount of attention i've come to prefer while dining solo dolo, checking quickly upon arrival at table, asking if i'm alright when delivering the food, staying around the area in case i'd thought of any request, and receiving payment promptly at the end of meal. one example of pleasant customer service to me, particular to restaurants that serve chips and salsa, is asking if i'd like more chips before refilling the basket or bringing a new one. ambiance the ambiance was pleasant. although the waiting area in the restaurant was close to full when i arrived, the seating area was still rather open and spacious, suggestive of the often unavoidable delay in coordinating that comes from a table request by a large group, as i'd while in the waiting area. nevertheless, the seating situation turnt out well for me, as i still received a table quickly and sat in a room i do not remember seeing before. on the back wall of the room, the furthest i was able see in the restaurant, was a mural of what looked to me like an open air market, including a donkey and at least one guy with a sombrero. while the mural is likely set in mexico, considering the cuisine of the restaurant, certain elements evoke the arid, desert climate of the middle east, and the man in the sombrero with the donkey may evoke in people an image of jesus riding into galilee on a donkey, a connection i find interesting because of the restaurant location in the shopping center across the street from the west side of bishop kelley high school, a catholic christian school. read more

First time being disappointed by a Mexican Restaurant. Soft serve margaritas were good though.

The interior has been remodeled and was very comfortable. Everyone had chili relleno and they were perfect! Delicious and cooked to perfection. Ask for hotter salsa to go with your chips, the one presented to most patrons is too much tomato and very bland. Service was excellent and attentive. Enjoyed sopapillias for desert that were freshly cooked. read more

Besides the disappointment in food the FIRST time we ate here, I decided to give them another try. BIG MISTAKE!!! Customer service was so bad, didn't even make it to be sat down. Rude, unprofessional and dare I say.....racist!?!? Never had experienced this in my 40+ years of life. We came in, were told no seats available for our party of 4. Then a couple (yt) came in and were greeted with smiles and very politely. 5 minutes later we are told they are setting up our table and then a party of 4 (yt again) walk in and received the exact same treatment as the couple, with them being seated AHEAD of us! We asked why and were met with blank stares n silence! NEVER again will I set foot in this establishment ever again! Permanent loss for them! Customer service isn't the same ANYWHERE these days. My wife and I have been wanting to try it for a long time. We finally went. We walked in at about 4 PM. A couple walked in just ahead of us. We were both told there would be about a 7 minute wait. We all looked around and all considered th restaurant about a quarter full at best. We thought it was strange, but whatever. While waiting we watched these two guys trying to figure out where they were possibly going to put two parties of two. After about 15 minutes, we finally got a table. We waited about 5 minutes before the manager brought us chips and tasty salsa that I would swear was Pace Picante. We waited about 10 more minutes without a waitress even looking at us. Finally the manager came walking back by as we were getting up to leave, and asked if we had been helped. Not sure how this place is still open. "Where the locals go". I can't see them coming back. After moving from Texas, and having been exposed to some of the best Tex-Mex food in the world, we promptly tried this establishment. The portion size was good, but the flavoring was not at all consistent with what we would've expected. Taste -wise, we would never consider bringing our family there again. Many years ago this was the go to for Mexican. That time is long gone. The restaurant is not clean, the carpeting hasn't been cleaned in some time. The tables and booths need desperately replacing. The food tastes like it's been microwaved, the only reason for the two star review is the margaritas are great. I won't be returning, so many better options in Tulsa. read more

Seems people either love or hate Ricardo's...we love it! They have the best chili relleno I've ever had. I love their chips; not too thick, not too thin. I enjoy the salsa but I understand it's not everyone's favorite; I would describe it as tomatoe-y and mild. The tostados and queso are very tasty as well. We've always had great service! read more

I really want to love this place because it's huge inside with an old school feel and the staff was incredibly nice. However, it lacked on a few key items yet still had some pros. Pros: - Chicken fajita meat was ample, juicy, and flavorful. - Queso was delicious. - Chips were great. - Staff from hostess to waiters were very kind. - Parking is easy and ample. Cons: - Rice tasted like packaged Uncle Ben's rice and thicker than the rice I usually receive at Mexican restaurants. Little flavor. - Refried beans were bland with absolutely no flavor. - Salsa had a heavy tomato sauce flavor. Overall, I may eat at this place again if I am nearby, but I would not go out of my way for it. read more

The food here is ghastly. Everything is either canned or bagged then microwaved. The margaritas consist of a flavor of vinegar & musky. I've had fresh homemade refried beans, rice, queso, salsa, at other places before. This does not say "Authentic". They may of been voted Tulsa's best margarita in the 1990's. But it's been years ago & a change in food quality amongst everything else needs an update. My wife and I didn't even finish our drinks, nor our entrees. It would be kind to say that the taco meat at this place tasted like dog food actually dog food would've tasted better. The meat was dry, bland and tasted old! The cheese sauce was nothing more than Velveeta, which had been melted and poured over absolutely everything. I have been eating at Ricardo's for at least 3 decades. The owner and staff are always great. The food is less spicy than I expect at a Mexican restaurant, but it's good. They have a great meeting room, and for larger meetings that don't fit in that room, they can set up the back of the downstairs room. They had a wheelchair entry/exit door long before the ADA law required it. read more

Busboy chased my elderly mother to the parking lot and scolded her about leaving her paper napkin on the table. She has been crying for an hour. When asking for the GM, a woman waiting tables presented herself as the GM and claimed he'd been told not to do that any more. I really don't know how I've not reviewed Ricardo's yet. It's been such a fixture on the Tulsa scene for decades. I assume I just took it for granted. So anyway.... Ricardo's is very much that 'neighborhood joint' that everyone talks about. The interior is large, with 3 separate dining areas and a couple of small banquet room. In all the years I've gone to Ricardo's, the service has seldom, if ever been anything less than good, with the usual being great. Staff are always friendly and prompt. Dining areas are always tastefully maintained, with no kitchy decor, like flaming lime green parrots or dayglo lizards wearing 3' sombreros. The music is always tastefully low, playing it's part in the scenery, instead of standing out like a live band no one wants to hear. Over the years, I've had pretty much everything on their menu. With only one exception... that being the fajitas... I've enjoyed them all. The fajitas were just a preference, as like most gringos, I like 'em on a blazing hot cast iron platter so I can properly inhale all that onion and pepper laced steam. Ricardo's fajitas are like your demure Aunt Sadie... just as good a Crazy Aunt Lulu, but more reserved, and a lot less flashy. These are served on a normal plate with all the fixings. Just as good, just not as much show, which in all honesty, is part of the fun of fajitas. As to the rest of the menu, it's all good. Taco Salads are as good as a basic item like that can be. Enchiladas are all good, well sauced and cheesed. The chili rellenos are some of the best around, and I get them now and again when I'm in the mood. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced and the right amount of food to see you through until suppertime without ruining your dinner. Their salsa, while being relatively mild by some places' standards, is addictive. It's a simple finely blended tomato salsa with a dash or two of seasonings. Again, nothing fancy, but I can easily embarass myself if I'm not careful. (note: The wife says that about me on everything, so take that how you will). Simply put, I'd put Ricardo's up against any mexican place in town for basic, no nonsense food. Sure, everyone has their favorites, just like I have mine, but Ricardo's can hold it's own with anyone. Since I've gone on a low carb kick, I routinely get their Protein Platter, which is basically loaded nachos minus the chips. Lets me eat chips as I want to, without a lot of hassle. Some reviewers may look at Ricardo's as tired, dated, bland and "my grandma's mexican restaurant", but that doesn't mean it's not well worth the trip. There's a LOT to be said nowadays for a place that has a tasteful, understated theme, good food, excellent service and reasonable prices. In fact, there needs to be more of that in Tulsa..... just my opinion. read more
