Sundays are our Chinese dinner nights, no matter whether we are at home or at our spot in Bandera, so when we happened to be there and yet to try China Bowl since the change in owners, we figured what better time. From the phone call to the pick up to the food, I am sure glad we did. Service before was standard, but theirs was friendly and thorough. Food before was solid, but theirs was amazing. We ordered the Spicy Salt & Pepper Chicken and Pad Thai. Omg! They were delish. The chicken was a pleasant surprise since we had never had this dish before. We would order it again in a heartbeat, but now we are motivated to try other new dishes. My partner loves Pad Thai. I have only ever enjoyed it from 1 location, which was a food truck in Austin. Every place since then has been a disappointment, but not China Bowl's. Thank you for knowing how to make a proper and extra tasty Pad Thai. Since we usually do not stay through Sunday when we visit town, we will either need to start or shift our Chinese dinner nights, so we do not miss out. read more

If anybody thinks the food here is authentic Chinese cuisine then I'm a Monkey's Uncle! You can go to a "hole-in-the-wall" Chinese restaurants in West Houston where the food is so tasty, authentic and well presented you could close your eyes and imagine you are in Hong Kong, London, Taiwan, Singapore, Shanghai or any major city in the US. It amazes me that there are 22 million (7%) Asian Americans in the US and you can only find quality & authentic Chinese food in major US cities. Why can't Chinese restaurants in small towns prepare food that represents their cultural cuisine instead of this bogus Chinese food that all tastes lackluster at best? Now I give kudos my tatted-out waiter, Colton, as usual he was terrific & professional. Ambience is somewhat anti-septic except for an amazing fish tank which is an absolute work of art!!!! Now onto the grub, I had steamed dumplings that were over steamed and the dumplings just fell apart when trying to eat them, the filling was tasty but ever so small almost stingy. Really? A decent portion would be appreciated. Had the butterfly shrimp and was shocked to see they were deep fried in breadcrumbs, furthermore they appeared to have been pre-bought & frozen, not fresh. How hard would it be to sauté fresh gulf shrimp? Chili Oil was good but not as good as the previous owners. Lettuce wraps were ok but could be a lot better with some loving care & preparation in the kitchen. Pride? Have tried their soups in the past & they taste reasonably good. Presentation was acceptable; however, wouldn't it be nice to use Chinese Blue & White porcelain dishes that reflect the Chinese culture & tradition. They are cheap & would add to the authenticity of a Chinese restaurant. Chinese soup spoons & chopsticks would be good addition as an option. Even in Kerrville, 40 minutes away, there is a restaurant that has excellent & authentic Asian cuisine that offers this option. How hard would that be? Oh well, just my thoughts; however, the benefits of living in the Texas Hill Country outweigh eating in a sub-standard Chinese restaurant in Bandera. read more

Feast after our 5hrs hike! From Lost Maples we tried to find a worthy restaurant to go to, to eat our heart out. And found this asian restaurant in Bandera. We were assisted immediately and have our order taken and served in sequence. We had our soup (egg drop and wonton) and appetizer (egg roll and crab rangoon) Both of the soup tastes so well! It just help me calmed and feel home. While the egg roll, you know you are paying a real deal - you get all the ingredient you need. While the crab rangoon it just so generous with the cream cheese. The staff were just nice and attentive. By the way, I am comparing these foods to all of the asian food we visited in San Antonio, Texas and other states that serves the food. General Tso was on point - one of the bests we had. The chicken still crispy even soaked with sauce. While the Clay Hotpot was just giving away all the meat and veggies they can. I One more plus in this restaurant, the water doesn't taste off - one thing we were so happy. This is one of the treasures in Bandera. And a good place to go to after a long hike or trek. read more

I have tried this restaurant a few times and just not impressed, small portions, huge prices and the food for me is just meh. Really no flavor to any dish that I have tried. I most likely won't be spending anymore money here unless I am just buying lomein, I tried really hard to like this place and just can't. Service is pretty good though. Went out to Bandera for a family birthday dinner and was not disappointed. Usual China Bowl menu for those familiar with the Boerne location. They had a nice separate party room area which was nice even though not busy on a Saturday afternoon when we were there. We were waited on by Zach who did a great job with our large group. Lots of variety in the dishes we got and everyone was pleased with their choices. Food came out hot and fast and great portions as always. Most of us had the lunch portion which is still a huge size and nice that they serve the lunch specials even on weekends until 3. Equally nice that unlike most restaurants now days who charge extra for fried rice it is an option included with the meals here. If you are up in Bandera and just need a fix for Chinese food this is definitely worth the stop. read more

Great Chinese food in the Cowboy Capital of the world. Walked in around lunchtime on Tuesday was greeted warmly and seated promptly. Ordered the Moo Shu Pork with fried rice and egg rolls. Lots of good selections on their menu. And the nice thing is they didn't seem to have any problem. Modifying the items when requested. I like the place because it's big and airy inside plenty of space high ceilings, enough room between the tables to where I didn't feel cramped. I was going to be in the town of Bandera for the first time on an assignment and thanks to Yelp! I was able to plan out my lunch and coffee break before I even arrived. Like I always say, Yelpers! are true Helpers! This community is a real treasure and I appreciate everyone that is involved and reviewing with photos and details because it makes it much less stressful when traveling, even if it is just a little over an hour away from home. With that said... I was greeted with a warm and friendly smile as soon as I walked in so thank you China Bowl! Once seated, I looked over the lunch menu and decided to get their Veggie Fried Rice, Egg Drop Soup ( no chicken in it ) and hot Jasmine Tea. I was so happy to verify what I read from another Yelper! ( Thanks Courtney M. ) about their Crispy Noodles with sweet and sour sauce being made in house. They were so good, I had those as my dessert! The Jasmine tea was nice and hot, and I had plenty to enjoy since they served it in my own personal kettle rather than a mug. The soup was just the right thickness and not to salty. The rice was a hearty portion for lunch prices, and again not too salty either. I enjoyed all this delicious food for only $6.01 including tax! The egg drop soup had unusual depth of flavor. The hot and sour soup was deliciously complex. They have MooShu Pork which hard to find on areas where a lot of Asian restaurants. I always get a take away and if you don't eat a lot for each meal, they give you enough in each order to divide the food into two decent meals. The food is very good, hot and tasty. I like the Jasmine Tea. For Bandera, where it's sometimes hard to find something to eat, the China Bowl is a good choice. I keep going back there and they have a good takeout service. Got the catfish and it had zero taste and a bad texture , definitely tasted freezer burned. Zero seasoning as well. It came with fries and steamed broccoli. The fries were good can't mess those up but literally there were about 12 fries if that on my plate it was less than a happy meal portion lol and the broccoli how do you mess that up well don't steam it long enough it was almost very under done and tasteless as well. If your one of those people that like bland tasteless food then this is the place for you. This place used to be my go to up until the last two times I have came and this will be my last. Everything I have eaten here is amazing. My favorite is the Clay Pot. I am not crazy about fake anything so I have them leave out the imitation crab- the fishy taste ruins it for me and they accommodate me every time. The walnut shrimp is perfectly delicious. Great portion size for the average person. I usually have the egg drop soup and it is so great- but I tried the wonton soup the last time and it was great as well. Egg rolls are good and the Crab Rangoon is so yummy The prices are amazing- service can be hit or miss- they do the absolute best they can with what they have- Covid has been hard on everyone. If you have not gone back because of a bad staffing experience- try them again- they seem to have everything ironed out. This place is a jewel in Bandera's crown. When we moved here I couldn't believe there was a Chinese place in town and was Leary. Then I talked the family into trying it and has become the favorite. My fav is the lunch special sweet and sour chicken. Chicken always tender served with pineapple, carrots, bell peppers and onions. Great sweet sauce for dipping and fried rice. This is ridiculous! I am appalled...at how amazing this food was. I'm a panda express and chinese buffet connoisseur/addict. Flavors are important, but this night the cook "A.K." I believe his name was, cooked everything perfectly. We were literally making audible "mmm, mmMM!!" noises eating our grub. The waitress and staff were as sweet as could be. Kind of funny place to go for my mom's birthday and didn't have a high expectation, cuz you know, it's chinese food in Bandera lol! But, damn if I didn't get blindsided with a snack in the face to flavor town ! This was last night. I left my to-go box in the car for about 24 hours and ate the rest with my fingers just now.
