This past Wednesday, we headed to Sichuan House for dinner. We ordered the Dong Po Pork Belly, pork soup dumplings, green beans, and Salt & Pepper Shrimp. Overall, it was good. The pork belly was melt in your mouth tender. So good. It's the best dish for sure. The Salt & Pepper Shrimp didn't come with the shell, which was fantastic. It had great flavor. Some of the soup dumplings stuck to the serving dish so we lost some soup. Still pretty good. Highly recommend to check this place out. read more

I have always loved this place. Not sure what has happened. We had a family dinner there tonite. Three 'specials' not 'available. The cucumbers not available. Seriously?? They are too busy focusing on their new venue. They closed their second location. Now this place- their home base - is not operating anywhere near their original standard. Always great food and excellent service. However, the hot and sour soup is terrible. Enjoyed lunch and got a bowl of soup to go for dinner. How disappointed was I when I tried it?! Totally missing any remote "sour" and instead had an odd smoky/mineraly flavor. I tried to save it with some black vinegar but that was a waste of my black vinegar. This was beyond hope. This place is so good, I wanted to go twice on a short weekend. The service is super fast and very helpful to give you suggestions on what to order. The ambiance is a little tight but you can still talk at a normal level. The food is amazing! I left with my mouth numb and I regret nothing. Let me say, I'm not usually one to write bad reviews, but if I could give this place a 0/5, I would. Food was mid, we have definitely had better elsewhere. We ordered multiple dishes. When we got the rest of our food, we let our waitress know we were missing Mongolian Beef. 20 minutes after, we still had not received it, so we asked for it to be removed off the bill. There was no remorse or want to make it right. That leads me to the service. Service was horrible. They were so frantic about mobile orders they couldn't even take care of people sitting in the restaurant. Lots of loud phone calls and noticeable panic from the teenager working the host stand and mobile orders. Blonde lady was aggressive, yelled in another language numerous times to other employees (seemingly about customers) and was overall not welcoming at all. I was stressed just sitting at my table because of the vibe they were putting off. Overpriced as well. We ordered 2 dishes and 2 sides and paid $65 dollars. Ambiance was mediocre, it's basically in a gas station parking lot. The chairs were velvet and couldn't be cleaned well, so we sat on dirty chairs. We ordered the food online and went to pick it up. I had no issues with the order, staff was nice and the food was prepared and ready to go fairly quickly. It was my first time coming here and heard good things about the food. Packaging was nice overall. Nothing was spilled and things were separated. One of the sauce containers was a bit melted from the heat and warped it spilling some sauce but thankfully the top didn't fully get taken off. The dumplings were delicious and the spring rolls were good. Absolutely would get these again. The chicken fried rice was simple but cooked well for the family. I ordered "Crispy, spicy and savory" chicken with white rice and it was awesome. The seasoning was perfect and definitely had a nice kick to it with the spices. Alot of red peppers with my meal though but overall delicious. You do have the option to make your meals spicier if it's not enough heat. Overall I had a good experience with the food and service. Let me start with how this review came about. We were die hard fans of their sister restaurant Dashi. They sadly closed 2 weeks before our annual Thanksgiving lunch there. Decided to go to Sichuan House instead because they said their chefs were moving there. We had made a 1pm reservation and arrived on time and told to wait about 20 minutes for tables to clear. No problem, we knew it was a busy day. We got seated. Server was AMAZING. Food...not so much. Average at best. We overheard the other server apologizing to another table that complained about the food saying that their chefs are still learning from the Dashi chefs. We ordered a lot. First off, the best item we ordered was the green beans. Amazing. In addition we ordered: hot and sour soup, soup dumplings, spring rolls, smashed cucumbers, enlightened fungi trio, bao buns, numbing spicy crispy savory calamari, mala spicy numbing tofu pot, kung pao chicken, dongpo pork belly, love me hate me spicy cumin beef. The kung pao chicken had zero flavor. Worst dish. Pork belly was good, spicy cumin was average and not spicy, the numbing pot and the calamari were kinda bland. Barely any spice and we asked for hottest level spice and numbing. The fungi trio was pretty good. We also ordered chrysanthemum tea and a oolong tea. They didn't have enough teapots and was only able to bring the oolong tea out at the beginning. Only two tea bags in the whole pot and we had to wait about 20 minutes for them to actually steep in there or else the tea was just clear water. Barely any flavor. He eventually brought the other tea but by then dinner was already done. It was a loose leaf tea so mostly just chunks in water, no filter on pot. He did comp that tea. When we asked about a few of the dishes and why they were so bland in comparison to Dashi he replied with "yeah Dashi was a lot better". We were very saddened. Maybe we will try again if the chefs get better. Our server did great. The atmosphere was more like eating at small diner. We had to ask for chopsticks as they were not automatically brought out. I will add that many of the dishes had a vegan option with tofu. Definitely A++ for that. We only got a few pictures after we had started eating. read more

I went to Sichuan House after seeing it on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, but the experience was kind of a miss. I ordered the garlicky cold noodles, Dongpo pork, and cumin lamb. The Dongpo pork was disappointing. It was barely warm in the middle and tougher than the "melt on your fork" advertised. The cumin lamb had good flavor and spice, but there was very little actual meat. The noodles were okay but nothing memorable. Overall, it did not live up to the hype for me, though the flavors show some potential. Although, maybe as someone who eats a lot of Chinese food, I may be too harsh on this local spot. read more

This place has really gone downhill. The food quality and taste have noticeably declined, and it's not just a one-time issue. I'm not sure if there's been a change in ownership, management, or cooks, but the difference is obvious. On my most recent visit, the spicy savory chicken was drenched in oil and completely soggy -- barely edible. I brought it up to the waiter, and like previous visits, nothing meaningful was done. There was no sense of urgency or concern. To make matters worse, on a prior visit I found a long hair in my lo mein. The dish was simply replaced with no apology or acknowledgment. That kind of response is unacceptable, especially when food safety is involved. This place used to be a go-to, but lately it's been one disappointment after another. Between the declining food quality, overly greasy dishes, and poor handling of customer concerns, I can no longer recommend it. I hope management takes notice before more customers stop coming. read more

My wife and I played bingo at a nearby bingo hall the other night and this place was just down the street. We'd been before...1-2 years ago, maybe ? When we went the first time, we were BLOWN AWAY - easily a 5-star experience. I mean, there isn't much to the joint, but the food was fantastic! This time...we didn't feel the same way. We felt the food was just okay. So, I averaged with a four star rating. Maybe, maybe closer to three stars, honestly. Definitely recommend the garlicky cold noods. I could have eaten that whole bowl for my meal and been a happy camper. My wife and I then split the Timeless Mongolian (teriyaki chicken) and the Dong Po Pork. I felt the Timeless Mongolian dish was mediocre and almost bland considering it's supposed to be teriyaki. The Dong Po Pork, not my vibe. At all. I have a texture issue with food sometimes, so the fatty layer on the pork was too gooey for me. Sauce had good flavor, though. I can't remember if my wife and I came here for the first time before or after Guy Fieri shot the episode of "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives". I hope he didn't curse the place, though, because every time I've ever been to a "DDD" location, I've been sorely disappointed. The fish is cooked to a delicious crisp but it's not dry. The fish is also very tender and the spice is just right I usually go in with a fish & chili flakes just makes it taste better. Great option for authentic Chinese food in San Antonio! The Sichuan items truly are spicy. I got the Mayo tofu and it was good. My husband ordered the duck and the flavor was great. First off, we LOVED and freqeuented Dashi. We've been to Sichuan House around 2 years ago and it was good, but not in the same level as Dashi. Last night, my Mom & I came here and ordered Hands-Folded Wontons, Crispy Spicy Chicken, Mala Spicy Tripas and Sichuan Salt & Pepper Fish. They were all SO SALTY! We tried eating them without complaining but once the Mala Spicy Tripas arrived, it was like eating the ocean so we had to have that one changed. Sorry to say but this experience will prevent me from coming back here. The rave reviews are accurate. We picked 4 items to share & all were delicious! The restaurant is located in a small strip mall. Ver unassuming. They do accept reservations via the Open Table app. We did not need them on a Thursday evening in January but we can definitely see how this place can get busy. From the hostess to the servers and chef, we had excellent service. The staff know the menu very well and can walk even the pickiest eater to a fabulous meal. Food is brought out as soon as it is ready in the kitchen. Our first dish was the sautéed green beans. Don't miss these. We ate the straight off the serving platter. Next came the salt & pepper shrimp along with a side of perfectly cooked rice. The shrimp were plump and flavorful. We also order the chicken spring rolls & shrimp/pork fried dumplings. Both came with a signature chili oil sauce. Our tip of the trip is to order some of their homemade garlic ginger soy sauce for dipping. It's delicious. We can't wait to come back and bring our tribe. I absolutely love sichuan food, and have been searching for a decent place in Texas. I ordered three dishes: garlicky cold noodles, hands-folded wontons with chili oil, and the spicy cumin lamb. The garlicky cold noodles were my favorite dish. I really enjoyed the garlic-forward spicy sauce. The wontons were disappointing. The broth was pretty flavorless even with the chili oil. The wontons were also very plain. The lamb was cooked well and had good flavor, but it was little too oily. Overall, they could have gone way stronger on the spice level. Sichuan food is supposed to be really spicy, but everything here was at a mild spice level. The service was also a bit slow. It took a really long time for our lamb dish to come out. read more

Try the garlicky noods - very satisfying and a great summer dish on a hot day. Even better with some smashed cucumber salad alongside. Can't wait to return and try their mapo tofu and dumplings. Pro tip: BYOB - a cold beer would be great with this cuisine. On the other hand, I wasn't a huge fan of the glossy pork belly (too fatty) or cumin duck (too many small bones). Real quality food. We've been looking for this! Great portions, and layered spiciness that's more than just volcanic heat. Loved their dumpling soup, their pepper shrimp, their pork belly, and something else, I can't remember now, but it had shrimp and it was tasty hot. Great service on Christmas Day! They come in an order of 6 pcs. I know I could eat those until I passed out. Keep in mind that entrees are shareable. Easily enough for two people. The Love Me, Hate Me Spicy Cumin Lamb was nothing but love!! Wouldn't necessarily say it's spicy as there was not a lot of heat. It's more of a peppery flavor with loads of cumin. However you wanna call it; I call it delicious. The duck had a nice crispiness and good hint of smoke flavor. Service was great. Our server was super nice. LOCATION: Near the freeway, which is good, but in a slanted strip center with a small, shared parking lot, which is a slight downside. Inside is a little bare, but better than being cluttered. Cool people and service has always been professional. FOOD: Awesome food and a lot of options. The Mongolian Beef is pictured below. The meat is really good on its own, but it's been served with a lot of onions when I've had it, and I would prefer more green/red peppers instead. The portion was great, and with the rice, I'm usually full. I also really like the crispy dumplings. Always would recommend them. One note is mild spice is USUALLY just barely spicy. I would go at least medium if you enjoy some heat. They have some good, more authentic-style Chinese food as well. The Chuan and the Spicy Garlic Chicken are awesome. Finally, it is BYOB if you plan on drinking. Overall, awesome place for some legit Chinese food. The Sichuan House not only exceeded my expectations but made me travel to foreign lands where someone's grandma prepared a comfort meal for a child who's been craving the softest meat that exceeds the tenderizing of any home made insta pot meal I've had. The cooks really know how to deliver their signature staple dishes really know what to make! Our server delivered the best pot belly I've ever had! It's been a while but this place still has good food and quick service, and new furniture. We always enjoy our meals here. We started with the cucumber smash'd - great flavor and always refreshing. Next came the cold garlicy cold noodles - I'm still not a fan of spicy, but I will eat these delicious noodles. The next dish was the beef & tripe dish, can't remember what it was called, BUT only complaint is that there was only 3 pieces of tripe. My husband was disappointed in that, it was still a delicious dish but he was looking for more tripe. Our mains were the 'Crispy, Spicy & Savory fish' and the 'Salt & Pepper shrimp'. Sichuan house what is the best Chinese food I have ever had and that is not an exaggeration. I enjoyed going there with a big group of coworkers because we got to eat family style and try a lot of things. The Dan pork belly was amazing perfectly crispy but also sweet and juicy. I was seated upon entering without a wait on a Saturday. Truly authentic spot but the service was not up to par. Somehow everybody's food kept coming out before mine although they had arrived after me? When I checked in on my order, it was wrong so it prolonged my wait. It took almost an hour just to get the first part of meal. The appetizers (wonton & rolls) did come out quickly. Besides that, they played good music and overall the place is clean and not too loud. Here's my rating on everything I ordered: *Hand-Folded Wontons (plain broth): 3/5 - I didn't like the taste of the pork in the dumpling. *Spring Rolls (Veggie): 5/5 - very tasty and you get 6 total with a spicy sauce *Lo Mein (Mixed/Mildly Spicy): 2/5 - The beef is dry and the shrimp is small. I asked for spicy and it was bland so I had to return it.. *The Spicy Cumin (Beef): Unfortunately my plate was never brought to me or prepared.
