Went here for the 1st time the other day and ordered take out. While waiting for my order, I took a quick walk around. The restaurant is a nice setting, with a nice bar area as well. The service was pretty good, our order was prepared nicely and quickly. The staff here was very courteous. The food was pretty good, no major complaints. The prices were ok, maybe alil on the high side.. I ordered 2 orders of GSO chicken, a couple egg rolls, and Ribs. The order wound up being $31, which was more than I was expecting. The food was good, portions could of maybe been alittle bit bigger. The ribs were ok, not worth making my order go above $30 though. Overall satisfied with this place. read more

Roast pork with mushrooms were excellent ,and my smarter 1/2 loved her shrimp dish which boasted very large shrimp , and was very reasonably priced. They have booths ,which is a huge plus, as well as tables. The Chinatown style noodles are fabulous. The atmosphere is old world Chinese restaurant which we loved. The restaurant is spotless, and they have an A rating. The lunch menu portions are more than adequate & very reasonably priced. They lose a star ,because they won't substitute the type of rice offered with the dish. Service is fabulous. We didn't have any drinks, so I can't comment on prices, or if they're a measured shot, or free pours.Definitely a must try if you live on Staten Island, or are passing through ,going to NJ or Brooklyn. read more

Overpriced for the quality. Usually the fried rice is excellent but the last couple times it is dry and old tasting. I'm not sure if they changed chefs, but it just isnt good anymore. So disappointing. Please go back to your old ways.. read more

If you find yourself out on Staten Island (it happens) and hankering for some good Chinese food, you're in luck. China Chalet offers up some of the best and more authentic Chinese grub the island has to offer. It's located in a strip mall next to an OTB and a Subway. There used to be another restaurant called Lum Chin in the space but Chalet is much better. Everything I've tried is very good here and aside from the usual suspects, they offer up some dim sum dishes like steamed shrimp dumplings (har kaw) that measure up to Chinatown standards. The hot & sour soup is also worth mentioning. While it's one of my favorites, I can't tell you how many times I regret ordering hot & sour because the consistency is wrong (too thick) or the flavor is just lacking. But Chalet gets it right. The broth has the perfect blend of tang with a little kick. Plus, it's chock full of ingredients. If you're looking for solid Chinese fare, check them out. We had just sat down at a booth. A few minutes later, my mother wanted to move to a table. The restaurant was 3/4 empty on a Sunday night during prime dinner hours which is not a good sign to begin with. Since we had NOT started our order, I asked the waiter to move us. Normally, this is something most restaurants would not blink twice about doing. But our waiter rolled his eyes in annoyance and then said "go pick out the table you want". I told him forget it. Rolling your eyes at customers is not an acceptable treatment when you are in the service industry. The rude behaviour reminded me of some of the low priced restaurants in Chinatown where this behavior is typical. Do not waste your time or money here! read more

The food here I would not even feed to dogs, I doubt they'd even eat it. The wontons in wonton soup tasted very processed with artificial chemical ingredients, the soup itself was oversalted and had pieces of chicken fat floating in it. Rice and pork didn't taste fresh, and flavors lacked any kind of passion, felt like I'm forcing myself eat something I really shouldn't be, just because I was starving. It's like they just slopped it together for some $. Avoid this place, and I suspect people who give this place a high rating have not tried really good chinese food before. read more

While visiting friends and family we stopped in this place and had high hopes but this place had the filthiest bathroom and the worst food on the eastern seaboard. We were hesitant to try this place because some reviews were not great. Happily we had a very positive lunchtime experience today! It is an "old-school" style dining room complete with crisp tablecloths and folded napkins. There is carpet on the floor which can always be a problem in restaurants but this one appeared clean and the room had no stale odors. Service was professional and quick. The lunch menu is huge with an large selection in every category. I gave them my version of a critical test by ordering the egg drop soup: it happens to be a favorite of mine however 99.9% of Chinese restaurants destroy the concept by serving you a bowl of orange glue instead of a delicate soup. Here the soup was excellent from the very first taste. The rest of our meals were also above average quality. They use good quality rice, the snow pea pods were fresh and perfectly cooked, the pork and duck were very good. Lunch for 2 people included complimentary fried noodles with dips, hot tea, choice of soups, entree, and choice of dessert which came to $25 including tax. We will definitely give this place a second try in the near future and hope it will also be a happy experience. read more

We went to the China Chalet on April 30 at 6:30 PM. We were a party of 6 people. The service was outstanding. The waiter, Richie, graciously answered any questions we had about the menu and when given special instructions because of dietary concerns he was attentive. The food was very good and served hot. The grand marnier shrimp was superb. The portions were adequate and we had no doggy bags to take home. We were not rushed and all had a wonderful time. I am speaking for the entire group. Have been ordering from here for about six months. Never had a problem. Tonight however I ordered roast pork lo mein and roast pork fried rice. Took an hour for delivery, which is not the norm.
