So, we ordered from China Chef today. Our order consisted of Egg Rolls, Shrimp Rolls, Dumplings, Seafood Combination, Beef with Black Bean Sauce, and Shrimp Lo Mien. Let me first say that every order was outstanding. The kiddos loved the noodles and my 4 year old ate every broccoli spear from the black bean dish. The egg rolls were delicious and the dumplings awesome. The beef with black bean sauce and the seafood combo were really tasty. I am considering whether to give the China Chef a 5 star or a 4 star and it is not because of the food. It is because they don't deliver. If they delivered, they would be truly a home run. But the food is going to win out because really, that is what should define a great establishment. Kudos China Chef. Great food!!! read more

I'm not a huge fan of China Chef. But, with that said if you're looking for swift takeout Chinese it works. You'll definitely get large portions. It's a quick mediocre Chinese fix! Don't expect any ambiance at all. It's based on takeout it seems. read more

I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was here. My wife and I split The Happy Family and it made this family happy. I ordered when I got to the window and the food was ready in no time. Easy order online also. The place reminds me of some of the old school Chinese restaurants in Birmingham while growing up there. If you eat inside it is very quiet. I get it. Southern folk don't actually have a clue what actual Chinese food should taste like. Even worse, no clue about what American Chinese food should actually taste like. It's just that bad. From the weird yellow tone fried rice, to the mushy dumplings that have no flavor other than soy sauce -and msg, be forewarned, this isn't the food the proprietors actually eat. They eat nothing short of amazing while they serve the lowest level of quality at an arm and a leg price. California prices, Alabama quality for sure. Service is sterile and the environment feels very unclean. Don't know how else to explain it. It honestly sucks, I have a few local peeps that have eaten Chinese food outside of Alabama and agree. China Chef used to not be good. Menu prices were catering to the "eat all you can for $6.99!" buffet crowd. Ever since COVID they have closed down their dine-in option and now strictly serves "to-go" orders and prices have risen. This has translated into a much better food/taste. Their hot and sour soup, for example, is simply the best around. If you haven't eaten here since COVID started, give it a try. I bet you will not be disappointed. read more

I choose China Chef consistently for a choice in a supper I don't have to cook. The food is always good, it is much more economical than other places with a similar menu and I usually see 1-2 friends waiting in line. It's not much on atmosphere, nor do they have servers, but for a to-go meal, it works great for me! read more

I have no idea why this place has bad reviews. We love it. Everything is always super hot and cooked fresh. The eggs rolls are great as are the spring rolls. My son loves the sweet and sour chicken and calls it donut chicken LOL. My hubs loves the general tso. read more

I went for the lunch buffet ($7.50). The food was basically like Chinese food that you get at a mall food court (which isn't always a bad thing!), but it was fresh. There was a decent crowd, so they were frequently reloading the buffet. The hot and sour soup was above average, and so were the wings, which had a light lemon pepper seasoning, and they were constantly coming fresh out of the fryer. Pineapple chicken was pretty good too. Only downside was the limited selection, but considering the price, I thought the buffet was solid Americanized Chinese food, and I'll be going back. read more

Most locals won't read the reviews, especially from someone from San Francisco who complained that no one, (and she misspelled the word), speaks English...umm, it's a Chinese restaurant idiot. DO NOT EAT HERE! I was standing here waiting for my food and the woman's child runs into the kitchen in flip flops complaining about his feet. She then handles his bare feet picking something out between his toes, stands up, doesn't wash her hands and proceeds to bag the egg rolls and assemble my food. This place is absolutely the worst place we have ever attempted to order "Chinese Take Out". We called in an order to the Fairhope location. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes. We live approximately less than a 10 minute drive to the restaurant. When we arrived to pick up our order, we learned that our order called in to Fairhope was filled at Daphne location. Puzzled, we called the Daphne location and the young lady on the phone said that it happens occasionally with orders from Fairhope. I was so upset that this had happened, that we obviously cancelled our order and drove to the nearest restaurant which was Danny's Fried Chicken, which turned out to be 100 times better than China Star would have ever been.
