We had lunch at Hunan yesterday, a Saturday. The food was strictly buffet. They had not been open long, however the food on the steam table that we selected was not hot or fresh. There were fewer options than other Chinese buffets. The salad bar looked decent, but we didn't eat salad. We feared the food had been at room temperature too long and decided to leave without finishing. We brought our concern to our server who referred us to who we assumed was the manager. She started to argue about it and charged us full buffet price for food we couldn't safely eat. This is an alright Chinese joint that offers a buffet and they also have a menu you can order from. My pal The Major thinks this is the best Chinese buffet in the area but then he can't remember the other ones we ate at decades ago when he first moved to the area so we will take his opinion with a grain of salt as he is noted for getting VERY set in his ways and not trying many new spots. We ordered take out from here for the first time. They have a very extensive menu however, when we called many items were not available. Good thing we had a few extra choices to choose from. The ladies at the restaurant were very friendly and helpful. Food was delivered on time and hot. We only got 4 menu items plus white rice that we didn't ask for. Lots of food for the price. We ordered Chicken fried rice and vegetable Lo Main and they were both extremely bland. There were only cabbage and broccoli in the vegetable Lo Main, besides the purchased pre-chopped carrots that come in lettuce. I put loads of soy sauce on to give it flavor, but just couldn't eat it. Also, I asked for sweet and sour sauce and they said okay and put it in the bag, but when I got home I saw it was plastic packets of duck sauce. It didn't substitute well if this was the purpose. Other than several fried options, they only had a soupy version of sesame chicken, a few soups, and they finally brought out some pepper steak. Salad bar looked nice, but I didn't try it. The food selection is just right. It is fresh and tasty. Friendly staff, really fresh Buffet food with a good variety of choices. I lived in China for 10 years and there is really no authentic Chinese here in America except for large city, China towns. But, this is good American-Chinese fare. Boiled shrimp us as good as I've had at the shrimp basket, and the boiled crawfish was as good as I've had anywhere in Foley. Sever was great, she took great care of us. It was a buffet which I normally never do. The buffet was very limited with stir fry dishes. The food was barely warm. I don't recommend this place. Since I have food allergies I have to watch I eat and what is cooked into my food. Eating here has been a joy. I have fresh steamed rice and the best egg drop soup, so good. I enjoy a great green salad with lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, and other raw vegetables, I use lemons and oranges to squeeze the juice over my salad, and my boiled shrimp, so good and yummy. Desert is small bowl of peaches and/or orange wedges, did I mention that the orange wedgies are California Navel Oranges. They are the best orange ever and slightly chilled. I was so surprised. When I tasted these oranges my comment to my husband was, I swear they taste like California Navel Oranges. When we asked it was confirmed that they were. You have your typical various cheap proteins in various salty sauces at any Chinese buffet. Unlike neighbor Peng Garden, Hunan features stuffed crab, crawfish, and cocktail shrimp. This selection is pretty good for the meager price. I don't understand Foley, Alabama. Does this area really insist on only dirt cheap Chinese buffets? It's frankly not possible to run a good buffet for such a low price. This place gets a second star for being better than Peng Garden. My family has been eating here for a couple of years now, and we always enjoy our meal. The buffet is small but has all of your favorites. We love the hot and sour soup, crab ragoon, sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls, fried dumplings, sesame chicken, coconut shrimp, and pepper steak with veggies...basically all of it! The dessert buffet also has a nice selection. Not huge but everything there is delicious. It's a local favorite and always packed for lunch. This is the best Chinese restaurant in Foley, Alabama PERIOD. While it might not be aesthetically pleasing, Hunans has the three things I'm looking for in a good Chinese restaurant (buffet): 1) It has tasty AND hot food 2) It is clean (which has a very different meaning than updated/modern, though they did recently install new flat screen televisions in the restaurant) 3) It's staff is friendly, welcoming, and enthusiastic about their jobs. The Staff: The owner is a sociable and honest woman who seems to personally know every customer that comes into the establishment. I've seen her sons work the cash register, load the dishes, refill food, etc. since they were just teenagers. It's unbelievable; this family's work ethic is unparalleled. Over the years there have been waitresses come and go, but my favorite waitress is still there to this day! If you ever get the opportunity to go to this restaurant, you should ask for Emelie. This woman is the definition of sweet. She is so friendly and warm; there is no way you won't feel comfortable and welcomed in this restaurant. To add to her great personality, she is also very attentive. I don't think I've ever had old plates sit on my table for more than 2 or 3 minutes and she always refills my drink without me asking. The Food: Hunans has all the essentials when it comes to Chinese buffets: -Sweet and sour chicken -Peppered Steak -Teriyaki chicken -Fried Rice -Peppered Shrimp -Soup (egg dorp/sweet and sour/ and dumpling) -Crab Ragoon -Egg foo-young -And so much more When it comes to quality, no other restaurant in Baldwin county even compares. The chef (who never takes a day off) is a culinary artist. His food is absolutely perfect every time. It's so consistently delicious! I understand that many people on Yelp aren't impressed with the selection of food at this restaurant, but what more do you want/ expect for the price?! I mean $5, for a buffet!? Where else are you going to find that price? Absolutely nowhere. A meal at McDonalds is more than that now-a-days.
