We stopped in for a quick dinner and drink. We were greeted promptly and seated right away. We were waited on by three people all friendly and attentive. We simply had the dinner combo. Our food came up quickly and was very tasty and hot. The dumpling soup was particularly good as it tasted fresh and was full of crisp boc Choi and tender dumplings. It was not overly salty as sometimes soups can be. We were served cashew chicken, vegetable fried rice and sweet and sour pork. Each of our items was very tasty and hot. My one comment would be that the plate of sweet and sour pork could have used some garnish and perhaps some tidbits of pineapple or peppers. We also enjoyed cocktails and a lemon cake that was terrific, super light and creamy lemon filling..... The staffing level was very good and everyone was very busy, but had time to make sure we had everything we needed and that we were enjoying our meal. We went here on July 2nd and our first impression wasn't a good one. The person at the counter was on the phone but didn't acknowledge us at all when we arrived (as I would have when I used to work in restaurants, but I guess that's just my customer service experience talking). Then a man came up to pay while we were waiting and after she hung up the phone, she immediately started helping him, again without acknowledging we were standing there. Pretty poor form if I'm honest, and was a not-great introduction to the business. The place was pretty packed so we had a 20-minute wait. Fine, not terrible, and we needed to eat and had no guarantees anywhere else would be faster. Tyler was our server and was one of those servers with the superhuman trait of being able to hold a table's order in his memory. I will never know how they do this. We ordered the dumplings and egg flower soup for the kiddo and veggie chow mein and crab cheese wontons for me. The kitchen was backed up so everything was coming out piecemeal (which is fine with me, I'd rather have it when it's fresh). The egg flower soup was good and the dumplings as well. My chow mein was delicious and while maybe could have used a LITTLE more sauce, was well worth it. My kiddo who isn't a chow mein eater even had some! We never got the crab cheese wontons, so whether that was a kitchen issue or a server's possibly human-after-all's memory, I'll never know. Either way it wasn't an issue as I was pretty full at that point and it would have been too much food. This was always a go-to growing up on the island! Not exactly authentic Chinese food but yummy and always satisfying! Every single time I go, we order the family meal 1 (Hong Kong I think?). It has all of my favorite dishes and I love that it comes with appetizers. The bbq pork sometimes is a miss but I love the wonton soup and the veggie rolls! It comes with fried rice, cashew nut chicken, and sweet & sour pork, and adds a dish for each additional person that joins! I love the fried rice because of how flavorful it is but I can see that some people might think it's too salty. I also love the mandarin shrimp! It has such a good flavor and the shrimp are a decent size. The specialty drinks have been good every time I've tried them as well. It is a little bit nicer than just a casual restaurant but I've also never felt out of place going in comfy clothes. Overall 4.5/5! Definitely a reliable choice for me and my family read more

WOW We were going to order some "Lunch Specials" to go and looked at the menu. I know that this is an island and we have gotten used to occasionally higher prices on things here. BUT $17 dollars for an avg at best lunch is ridiculous and they charge $20 for a simple baby bok choy stir fry!! That's about $2 in food cost at the most depending on the serving size. I know you are all in a captive market over here but that's insane! I eat the same lunch specials at top quality Chinese restaurants in Bellevue where things aren't cheap for much less and I'm often the only non Chinese in the restaurant. Authentic and tasty for $10-13 not yuck for $17 plus. With the weird service, avg white people style Chinese food, and mostly the prices, we will likely not dine here again. read more

Last time, we had the almond chicken (good, very American-Chinese), fried rice (gets the job done, but could be improved with more flavor), Mongolian beef (good), more fried rice (same), and two cups of egg flower soup (very tasty). The crab cheese wantons that come with the Lunch Specials are delish. The jasmine tea was good, served hot in a nice, cast iron Chinese teapot. The service was prompt, attentive, and friendly. The decor and grounds are excellent - see pics below. They have put significant time, money, and effort into making this restaurant feel special. At ~$16 for a lunch special (soup, entree, rice dish, crab cheese wanton, and the obligatory fortune cookie), lunch prices are, as of Nov. 2023, pretty good (certainly very competitive) and make this restaurant a good value. If you're on the island and want Chinese, I think you've found the place. We came here for a family dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant was far from busy and we got seated with our party of 11 immediately. The waitress was kind and gave us plenty of time to order. We got our drinks and shortly food started coming little by little. What was awful was the service after this. We NEVER got a refill. We were told incorrect information about the orders. People who wanted a meal 1 were told that was fine and later charged for two!!! The people who ordered for two, received the same amount of food as the people who ordered for 5!! Our bill at the end was $489. We were charged for 3 extra meals and they refused to adjust the bill. They also included the gratuity that was not deserved. I paid $50 cash and they didn't apply this to my bill. I was now charged twice also. Terrible experience. Awful service and less than mediocre food. read more

There was a great selection and it was hard to choose. The food also was really good and the portion size was large. The server was friendly and we had no complaints. I recently became an Amateur Radio Operator and joined a club for Amateur Radio Operators. Today my club was having their monthly informal luncheon at China City in Freeland, WA. I attended to get a chance to meet some of the other members of the radio club I just joined. Including me, there were 8 of us and we were seated at a large round table were the entire center of the table rotated. Basically, a giant Lazy Susan! The 8 of us had a very nice time visiting with each other talking about all manner of subjects while enjoying our menu selections. I chose to order Szechuan Chicken with Fried Rice. I chose this dish for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted chicken that wasn't breaded. Secondly, this is a spicy dish and I was able to specify my spice level from 0, 3, 6, or 9. I really enjoy spicy food so I ordered spice level 9. The dish was very nice. I enjoyed the flavor of the sauce the chicken was served in and the fried rice was pretty good as well. My only complaint is a common one I have for most restaurants serving spicy dishes. It just didn't have much heat! Especially for an alleged spice level of 9! Granted, I enjoy spicy foods and someone that doesn't normally eat spicy foods may not have been able to eat it. But, I would expect the highest spice level offered to be something of a challenge. Oh well, the restaurant was probably trying to save me from myself. Overall, the Lunch was very enjoyable. The restaurant grounds are quite nice to look at, the interior is clean and tidy, the decor is what I expected to look like, and the staff was friendly, professional, and polite. We came here for dinner when we were in town and didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the restaurant, decor, and service! For appetizers, we got the crab Rangoons and the prawns. Both were good! For entrees I got the beef and chicken and my husband got the sweet and sour chicken. We shared an order of vegetable fried rice. The food was large portions and easily sharable but in my opinion, it was still a bit pricy. I ordered three orders of lumpia two days ago to go which I received and I asked the cashier or order taker if I could get some teriyaki sauce to go with it. She said how much do you want. I said one cup full. She said that's fine. We sell it in different sizes. Wonderful and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. Beautiful setting and quiet for a delightful lunch with friend. The lunch special was tasty and our server Emily very friendly and nice. A wide range of menu choices. They do seem busy with take out and so you do have to be patient for your check and if you need something. If you were on a tight turn around I would suggest letting your server know. Great access for anyone with mobility issues, very clean and relaxed! Five stars for great relaxing leisurely lunch. OMG!! Where to start. The interior is huge...lots of options for any kind of seating imaginable. The staff is super sweet and works as a very efficient team to get your order, drinks, food and bill in a very impressive and timely manner. The biggest draw of course is the DELICIOUS and AUTHENTIC Chinese cuisine. We started off with the Egg Drop Soup and the Garlic Green Beans, then the House Egg Foo Young and the Mushu Pork. I have been to the Freeland China City restaurant twice since the end of the pandemic and the entire food experience is a world different and far more disappointing compared to prior to the pandemic, the almond chicken was small little nuggets that were hard as a rock and the almond chicken sauce was also a world different and not as appetizing as before the pandemic, the atmosphere was the same as in the past and the service seems similar, after visiting this location and telling all my family and friends how wonderful of a restaurant this has been sadly my opinion has changed because of their downgrading of the food, they used to have dazzling food that made China City stand out as being far better than all the rest but now this is not the case and to my surprise I am now mentioning to everybody that this is not the go-to place. read more

We drove to China City after checking into our vacation rental and were seated right away in a great booth that fit us all nicely. We orders a variety of dishes to share and ALL of it was wonderful. There is nothing I would change about our experience here. We were on the island visiting a wedding venue and wanted to eat before we headed back. Jumped on yelp and saw this place, then it was recommended by the woman at the venue. It's a little surprising when you walk inside. Front of the house can be a little slow, but it's actually a really beautiful restaurant inside, so that makes up for it. It's a little darker and would be a perfect date spot. The food was amazing. We got the BBQ pork to start, and it was the good stuff. Served with hot mustard, ketchup and sesame seeds. Then we got the sesame chicken and the sweet and sour chicken. Both were amazing! Cooked perfectly crispy and not soggy. Paid extra to get white rice and fried rice on the side and it completed the meal. If we are ever in the area again, we will for sure stop by! read more

We stopped by on our way back to the ferry from Deception Pass. We've been once before and don't particularly remember any negative experience, so we stopped by again. We ordered the No. 2 Shanghai Dinner Combination, which is a much better deal than ordering multiple things separately. For $18 per person you get hot and sour soup, dumplings and egg rolls, rice, and Mongolian beef and almond chicken. Hot and sour soup: came out almost immediately. It was served in a large bowl with a ladle and we were given small bowls to serve ourselves. Flavor was good, soup could have been a little hotter, but it wasn't cold. 4/5 Dumplings and egg rolls: pretty straightforward; served with a soy sauce for the dumplings and a sweet and sour sauce for the egg rolls. Dumplings were a little salty, not sure if they are made in-house or just cooked from a package/frozen. Egg rolls were seasoned better, but nothing spectacular. 3.5/5 Mongolian beef: best dish of the entire combo. A little on the sweet side, but the meat is cooked well and it's served on a bed of fried styrofoam-like noodles that are fun to eat. The onions were still crunchy and could use an extra minute or two on the heat so that they weren't so overpowering. 4.5/5 Almond chicken: worst dish of the entire combo. The breading was so thick that it soaked up the moisture from the gravy and thickened to this slop that was just as thick as the chicken was. That being said, the gravy is a flavorless brown liquid that looks like Thai peanut sauce but doesn't taste like anything. We scraped off the breading and sauce to eat just plain chicken, which was cooked well at least. 1/5 Overall, not a bad place to stop for something that isn't your typical burger or pizza joint that you'd likely find littered across the island. read more

We used to enjoy China City very much, but the last few times we've had their food it's been ever so disappointing. In particular the Almond Chicken, which was one of our favorites, has gone from sliced chicken breast pieces to tiny dry lumps of flavorless dry bits like something from a grocery store bits which were left in the freezer months too long. Sadly, we couldn't even chew about a third of it, and threw it out. We encountered the same problem a few months ago but hoped t was a one-off occurrence. But it's the same again. I phoned the restaurant and was told they won't be changing the current recipe. I'm sorry to write this and sorrier to downgrade such a fun spot. I was told I can just avoid ordering almond chicken again. Of course I won't; my loss. The boding was bland and a bit dry. The broccoli beef was very good. Overall a below average experience. I am here on Whidbey Island for a few days, celebrating a birthday. Last time I was here years ago it was for camping. Well, I don't camp these days. Much preferring upscale, semi elegant stays with a balcony, a shower, a jacuzzi, and so many more luxurious amenities. So, this time were staying at a fake-cation home ( Yup, you guessed it, the brochure made this place sound far better then it is). --- But, I am happy to not be roughing it in the woods or sleeping in a cabin with bats and other critters. And having meals that are certainly not smores, campfire roasted hotdogs, and the like. Which brings me to tonight's dinner out. This Chinese restaurant caught our eye because of how remarkably elegant it looked. It is just a beautiful building. The landscaping around it and the architecture itself is gorgeous! The menu is robust hosting a number of items that anyone who knows Chinese food would be familiar with, and others that are chef's specials. Everything from your typical appetizer pot stickers and egg rolls to fancy entrees, as well as family style meals for two or more. This restaurant definitely has a way of drawing you in and whetting your appetite. But the reality, in regard to the quality of the food and price, was a huge let down for us. Simply put, the food was bland except for salty flavor, and the price was about $12 to $15 more than it should have been for the overall experience (and based on what I usually pay for the same on the Seattle side). We ordered: Two types of wonton soup. Both not great, and one with very unusually strange wontons in it. The potstickers were boring - rather small and missing moisture/juiciness. The House Special Egg Foo Young was missing the "special ", as it should have had a variety of meats mixed in. Unfortunately, it did not. I truly can not recommend any of those items. We've lived on Whidbey Island for about 3 years now and have never dared try China city, primarily because we've heard they're way over priced (that's not wrong). I'm not entirely sure if there is any difference between the one we went to, or the one in Oak Harbor, but I'm assuming they're relatively the same. We bought and paid for three plates, and 4 drinks (non alcoholic) and it came out to a little over $50. The sodas were $3 a piece! We would recommend ordering takeout unless you plan on just drinking water. We may have come in when they were understaffed, but service was exceedingly slow and the waiter was noticeably unhappy. Once seated and after ordering, we noticed 3 other groups get seated *after* us. They not only received their soups first, they were almost completely done with their meals before we even got our soups. Again, we may have come on a weird day, but service was sub par. After all is said and done, the food was actually really good. The breading on the sweet and sour chicken was cooked perfectly, the wonton soup was very good and the crab Rangoon was literally the best crab Rangoon I've ever had in my life. The rice could have been fried better, but it's excusable with how good the rest of the food was. The atmosphere is pretty tranquil and what I'd expect however, halfway through the meal the music stopped and the restaurant got awkwardly quiet lol. Grabbed dinner and drinks at the Freeland China City. Very disappointed with the service and ambiance of this location. The server guessed on how to make a requested drink, totally missing the mark and not admitting she didn't know how to make the drink, even though it's served at the sister restaurant in Oak Harbor. Also, my family has visited all associated restaurants (China City Oak Harbor, The Muse, Fisherman Jack's) and we have always been impressed with the amazing staff, atmosphere, & food. The Freeland location feels like the black sheep, outdated, and subpar compared to the other restaurants standards. read more
