There aren't a lot of choices in or around Coupeville, WA when it comes to pet-friendly hotels, but the Tyee Motel and Restaurant was available, and less than a mile from Front Street, so it quickly became the obvious choice. Now, when it comes to hotels, I'm not all that picky about where I rest my head. As long as there is a clean bed, shower and toilet, I'll be just fine. With few exceptions, I don't travel to stay in a hotel; it's just a place to stop and recharge, before heading out to see the things I came to see. The Tyee motel itself, however, tested the limits of this philosophy of mine. We had planned on taking the ferry from Port Townsend early in the afternoon, but due to high winds, several ferries were cancelled, and there was no guarantee the winds would abate enough for *any* ferry to disembark that day. We reserved Tone of the very last ferries of the day, and hoped things would calm down by then. I called the Tyee to inform them of this, and the woman who answered, whom I believe to have been the owner/manager, was very sweet, understanding and helpful. She informed me that if we were unable to make it, she wouldn't charge us for the room (despite being beyond the cancellation period), and that she could easily fill the room, if it came to that. Thankful for her understanding, we felt better about our predicament, and ended up catching an evening ferry and checking in to the hotel a little after 7pm, without any issues. All hotel business is handled at the bar within the adjacent restaurant, and the check in (and check out) process was simple. We headed to our rooms, and encountered the kind of low-budget motel experience we expected. There were, however, some things that made us cringe: pubic hairs on the toilet seat; a squeaky, less than comfortable bed; strange stains on the floor and the walls near the runner at the bottom, and an overall sense of uncleanliness throughout. I checked the bed for bed bugs, just in case. The restaurant and bar are a different story. The bar itself is divey, but in a comforting, home-to-the-locals sort of way, with a small furnace giving off enough warmth to fill the place. We had a couple drinks there later that night, right before bed, but did have to explain the recipe for one, even though it's rather common. We also partook of breakfast the next morning, which was a hearty and tasty, home-cooked meal, enough to split between the two of us. Our server was less than expedient and a little flighty, but pleasant enough. Overall, the Tyee did everything it needed to do, some things better than others. The management exceeded all expectations, and the bar and restaurant were competent enough, which helped to offset the disappointment caused by the housekeeping staff and condition of the motel itself. Everything else fell squarely into the "you get what you pay for" category of the budget motel experience. Know what you're getting in to, don't set your expectations too high, and the Tyee will do its job. Don't expect a mint on your pillow; instead, turn it over once or twice, to make sure there are no other surprises on it.

Everything was excellent! From the service to the food. I had the Captain's platter and it was delicious! The cod was flaky, tasty and had the perfect light batter. I would highly recommend!

Medium Fish and Chips at the Tyee Restaurant and Lounge

I was out and about on Whidbey Island and I passed through Coupeville so I decided to stop in at the Tyee Restaurant and Lounge for some lunch. I elected to sit in the lounge area. The decor is lounge appropriate in that the walls are covered in retired beer tap handles. There are also three TVs. Two of the tvs were tuned to the Masters golf competition and the third was tuned to a soap opera. After examining the menu, I decided on Deep Fried Mushrooms and the Medium Fish and Chips. The mushrooms appetizer was a generous serving with what the server called "a swimming pool of ranch". I was a little disappointed that the mushrooms were barely warm, almost like they were under a heat lamp. However they were not greasy. They were very tasty. The Medium Fish and Chips are named that because there are three pieces of fish sitting atop a pile of fries. The fries were crisp on the outside yet fluffy inside. Very nicely done. When I eat fish and chips I treat the meal like it's finger food. I prefer to pick the fish up with my fingers and dip them into the tartar sauce. Or drip malt vinegar on them and pick them up to ear them. Any way, two of the fish portions were nicely crisp but one of them was soggy and sagged on me . As for the taste, the fish portions were cooked perfectly in that the batter was crisp (with one exception) and the fish was tender and moist. The staff is friendly and efficient and quick to remind patrons to wear their mask as soon as the patron leaves their seat. The staff takes Covid-19 precautions serious.

Local, local, great food and amazing staff. Best fish and chips on the Island. Make sure you try the Eggs Benedict and a side of tater tots.

Obviously the person on the grill wasn't trained or wasn't paying attention. Pacing was also a problem. Waited pretty long to order. Then salads came while we were finishing last bites of the appetizer. Then entrees came while I was literally in the middle of my salad. Talk about rushed. That salad would have been good if the shaved parm had been shaved. However, the pieces of parm were huge - really thick. Can't imagine who would think that was a good bite on a salad. The Broccolini was half cooked. I could barely cut the stem with a steak knife. Obviously. I couldn't eat those stems. They did not have a flight of wine that was all reds (i don't drink white wine). So why 4 stars instead of less? The mushroom toast appetizer was fantastic. I shouid have stopped there and would have been happy. The ceasar dressing and large crouton were good, even if the shaved parm was a bust. Once the steak was served to me medium as I'd ordered it, it was delicious and the fries were crispy and went well with the steak. I enjoyed the glass of wine I ordered. I hope they get their act together - such potential!
