the food was very family friendly... the waitstaff was phenomenal... almost every night of my stay (5) there was a single waitress handling the dining room and only once was dinner delayed!!! i was very impressed! and of course there were stand out people... Aly and Michelle made everything including my grand children smile... i know i have made a few true friends... Aly took a really lousy day and made it far better. Michelle took myself and my grand kids to the pool... and Aly made sure to include us in her family's plans for the 4th of July! the motel has a beachy feel to it with all the blue and white. We have been going to Tyee since the early 70's, sometimes off and on, other times quite often. During that time and now it has changed ownership three or four times with a change in food quality changing with each new owner. In a nut shell it went from spectacular to barely palatable. Went there on Father's Day. I had fish and chips. They were satisfactory, not up to the F&C in the past, but satisfactory. I've had much better and much worse elsewhere . Wife had chicken fried steak and home fries. Steak had no flavor, just a dull piece of meat. The fries were covered with something black and overcooked most likely onions but really don't know what it was. Daughter had Spanish omelette which she had before about a year ago and was looking forward to having again. Well it was an omelette but the ground beef was fried to a crisp and veggies also overcooked. Recommend going somewhere else. As it is Tyee is just not up to par which is very disappointing considering people used to come from far and wide just to dine at the Tyee. I was out and about on Whidbey Island and I passed through Coupeville so I decided to stop in at the Tyee Restaurant and Lounge for some lunch. I elected to sit in the lounge area. The decor is lounge appropriate in that the walls are covered in retired beer tap handles. There are also three TVs. Two of the tvs were tuned to the Masters golf competition and the third was tuned to a soap opera. After examining the menu, I decided on Deep Fried Mushrooms and the Medium Fish and Chips. The mushrooms appetizer was a generous serving with what the server called "a swimming pool of ranch". I was a little disappointed that the mushrooms were barely warm, almost like they were under a heat lamp. However they were not greasy. They were very tasty. The Medium Fish and Chips are named that because there are three pieces of fish sitting atop a pile of fries. The fries were crisp on the outside yet fluffy inside. Very nicely done. When I eat fish and chips I treat the meal like it's finger food. I prefer to pick the fish up with my fingers and dip them into the tartar sauce. Or drip malt vinegar on them and pick them up to ear them. Any way, two of the fish portions were nicely crisp but one of them was soggy and sagged on me . As for the taste, the fish portions were cooked perfectly in that the batter was crisp (with one exception) and the fish was tender and moist. The staff is friendly and efficient and quick to remind patrons to wear their mask as soon as the patron leaves their seat. The staff takes Covid-19 precautions serious. read more

Several years ago, we were told by local friends not to eat at the Tyee. Two years ago, we were stuck, and ate at the Tyee. We were pleasantly surprised. Food was great, service was great, and the price was right. We liked it so much that last year we took our friends who told us not to go. They liked it as well! This year on our annual week in Coupeville, we went 3 times!! It is our go-to place when we're in Coupeville. The first night we came to the Tyee to eat, it was within two minutes of closing time. They could have told us they were closed. But they told us that they'd serve us. And they did. Not with a sneer or making us feel like they were doing us a big favor (which they were). But with a smile and graciousness that we appreciated. Since we've been eater here for the past few years, the food has always been wonderful. A wide selection so that we could come back and eat three times and order different things. Everything we ate has been well-prepared and tasty. They are especially good at the soups and the vegetables, which are true tests for an eatery. And at a reasonable price. The service was always friendly, efficient, and with a smile. We felt at home here. I wish there was a place like this for us in our home town. We'd be there all the time! If you haven't eaten here, or not for a few years, give this place a try. So I come to Whidbey Island a few times a month to do work, and I've been to the Tyee restaurant twice in the last two weeks and I had the exact same experience. Both times I brought in my employees, sat down to have lunch, and there was a shift change at 2 o'clock, Both times the lady who comes on at 2 o'clock is running around like her head has been cut off and they're only a couple tables in the restaurant. I don't wanna go into long detail, but one of the things that happened is one of the girls with me said the ice tea taste funny and can she get coffee instead the waitress brings it over and says "well that table says the ice tea is fine" she wasn't looking for an argument she just wanted to change for coffee. When I place my order, I asked for ranch dressing for my club sandwich and fries and when my food came because of the shift change, I didn't get any dressing and the gal who ordered a salad also didn't get any dressing so I asked the waitress can I get two ranch dressing's she brings one ranch dressing to the table and says you guys can share it and walked away. I went up to the counter and I asked her can I please get one more ranch dressing I said I would like to put Tabasco in this ranch dressing and the other gal does not want Tabasco on her salad so she tosses me a plastic ramekin with ranch and goes on with what she's doing. At the end of the meal she ended up charge me $.85 for the dressing. That girl is not people friendly, and should not be waiting on tables, and if she worked at my restaurant, I would fire her. And I will be back this weekend, but I will not be eating at that restaurant or will my staff. And if it's that hard time finding waitstaff, I would have people order at the counter and get their own food. read more

Without confirmation I wasn't comfortable with having no place to stay for my daughter's wedding so found another place through AirBnB on which I received multiple confirmations. While on the ferry to Whidbey Tyee sent a reminder. I called to cancel, but they still charged $105 for nothing. Just very poor service. I won't step close to this place. read more

I have been coming to this bar since 1998. the bar waitress today was so rude it took me back a few steps. After waiting for her to get off the phone making tamales orders for the bar customers with her mother I ordered a cocktail and $40 in pull tabs. She flat out told me she can do $20. There are 4 people besides my husband and I. When I told her we were leaving right after our drinks and tabs, with an angry look and disrespectful tone told me again "I'm doing $20 now". I've been a server in this community for a long time. I'm not a tourist, I live down the block. I'm in this industry in this town, so the fact that I'm sitting here with empty drinks and no food after nearly an hour while the other locals next to me already have their food doesn't surprise me. They came in, they're regulars, so she put their order in without asking..meanwhile, my family sat here waiting and waiting and we still are waiting. And I've heard the server say at least ten times that she's the only server and she's slammed. I'm tired of hearing it. If this floor is too large for her to handle alone then she needs to close off some of the seating. We're past the point where that works or is acceptable. read more

Waitress was excellent, atmosphere was good, little hidden gem in the cute comforting town of Coupeville. In the middle of our meal a man started yelling at our waitress out on the floor!! Completely humiliated our her!! I could tell she was holding back her tears as she continued working with her head held high. Come to find out this man was the OWNER?!?! And he spoke to his employee with such disrespect and in front of customers?!? I felt so bad for her, she was absolutely amazing and didn't deserve such harassment and abuse from her superior. I love coming to visit Coupeville but I will not be returning to this cafe. I will not support a company who abuses their employees. I hope the owner changes his ways or our waitress brings her joy and excellence to a different company who will acknowledge her value and give her the respect and dignity she deserves. Our family has been coming here for 50+ years. The food has always been very good with good size portions. My husband and I were there recently and ordered the chicken fried steak, in the bar, it was fantastic! The drinks were great as well. I wish that I could remember the name of the lady that waited on us because she was exceptional and very kind. We had told her that we were taking half of our meal home because we wanted it for breakfast the next morning. We were only going to be on the island for a couple of nights. When we left there we were headed home but had to make a stop to watch a deer snacking out of a tree, so cute. We took our time getting home but once there, realized that we had forgotten our leftovers. This was very disappointing. I made a call to the Tyee expecting our food to be gone but it wasn't. The lovely lady that waited on us knew that we wanted it for morning and saved it for us. We went straight back there and picked it up. The Tyee is one of the few restaurants in the small Washington coastal town of Coupeville. Now why am I sitting here in this old wooden lounge being served by a salty waitress who obviously hates her life? Well, this is because this is not only one of the few restaurants in Couperville but is also one of the few restaurants on the way from Olympic National Forest in Washington to Vancouver British Columbia. The ferry from Port Townsend to Keystone was sweet + beautiful but unfortunately this restaurant didn't hold up. In any case, the Tyee you can tell is the local restaurant and lounge of choice simply because it is the only one near. The food consists of almost exclusively seafood affair - which I suppose being in the North West I shouldn't be that surprised. Still, there wasn't a single vegetarian option on the menu excluding the stereotypical iceberg lettuce salad bar...which is what I got. My companion got the fish and chips, which she said was decent and fresh, so thats something. Oh and they give you an Andes mint at the end of your meal. Still, as I said, the server hated her job and it showed. Furthermore, the kitchen was playing a classic rock station while the restaurant was playing a country station at an equal audible level. Nothing quite like a Pink Flloyd Toby Kieth mash-up eh? This in itself will not allow me to give it more than a 2, and I suppose since the prices were reasonable and the fish apparently good, that is what it will get. read more

After three months of no dining out because of the lockdown, my boyfriend and I just had the most delicious lunch at the Tyee. We sat at a table, everything was so clean and organized, we were greeted by Anna (an AMAZING server and treats you like Family), ordered a draft beer and iced tea, saw a few of our local friends in town, chatted with the owner, great conversation and we are very grateful to be able to enjoy life again and help out our local businesses. Staying here two days with my family, first impressions: Service was friendly. The ladies are busy, prompt though, and not dismissive. I have read a number of reviews that state the service is terrible, I didn't experience any negative vibes, or rudeness. PROS: We are a Lesbian couple with kids...they are friendly, no weird looks or anything. Trust us, that's a bonus, right out the gate. Extremely affordable. Rooms are decent size for couple stay. We rented two rooms, and each room the same size. No tub, only showers, not a problem for us. Upon entry to rooms, warm, clean looking, clean smell... they definitely make sure guests don't smoke in rooms. One room television didn't work, they promptly attempted to fix, but to no avail; offered alternative room, and we accepted. New room clean smelling, fresh bedding just like the others. Red Apple directly across the street. There is not a bakery there, but there are Organic Food selections. The cost of the food is not Island markup, it's comparable to mainland. CONS: Internet giving issues, we inquired, and there was a Internet technician working to resolve issue...maybe it will work tommorrow, but not a deal breaker for us. Internet is free. Day two, not a strong internet signal, but there are better things to do with our time around here. Walls are rather thin, literally, not much room between the rooms LOL...you can hear everything....thank goodness both nights there was none getting it on next door. We are Vegan so won't be eating at restaurant, walked through the pub, and restaurant, food looked Greasy Spoon, which is typical of small-town eating. Wish List: Mini fridge. There is a pub here, environment is warm, inviting, talkative, and no issues in evening with loud noise. I gave it four stars because of the internet...thin walls, well, that's an issue, but I'm not hung up on that. For the price, it is 4 stars. I have stayed at places that are twenty bucks more, and not even close to half as pleasant a stay. read more

We were visiting family on whidbey and they said this place is "famous for their fish and chips"....ok must try! It was dead at this place, but there was also a Seahawks game on.....figures! We ordered drinks and looked at the menu; salads,sandwiches, burgers...etc Everyone ordered the fish and chips. I went rough and had chicken Parmesan.
