I'm breaking this review down into three components: Food, Service and Management. Food. 4.5 stars. The food at China City is always excellent. The restaurants have scaled back their menu significantly in 2017, including the removal of the popular 'combinations for one'. What was once a booklet with multiple pages, is now one page, front and back. But our meal was great, as expected. My wife and I had the 1st combination dinner for two, which really wasn't what we'd wanted. In the past, we each would have ordered our own combination, thus ensuring we were both equally pleased. But again, the food was great. Service. 5 stars. Our server, Jordan, was simply amazing! It appeared as though he had responsibility for the lion's share of the restaurant - he was constantly on the move, even seating new patrons when the hostess wasn't around. Our water glasses were always filled. Jordan also had a good command of the restaurant's wine selection. We were extremely pleased with both the attentiveness and friendliness of this young man. Jordan is definitely an asset to Freeland's China City! Management. 1 star. I have chronicled the questionable decisions of China City's management in other reviews (particularly when they stopped honoring their own discount printed on Coupeville football fund-raising cards in 2014). But our experience last night was something new! We had purchased China City gift certificates last year. We paid cash for them, assuming that the gift certificates would be treated as cash. But when we went to pay our bill, Jordan came back and said that his Manager would only allow the gift certificate to cover the food portion of the bill - we couldn't apply the remaining gift certificate's value to his gratuity. He brought back the partially used gift certificate, with the original value crossed off, and the remaining balance written in. He apologized. Good thing I was carrying enough cash to cover Jordan's tip! I was astounded - what business owner / manager would refuse to honor a gift certificate as cash? This wasn't a Groupon or Restaurant.com certificate - it was a China City gift certificate, bought at China City, with cash! So, we asked to speak to the Manager, who confirmed that it was their policy not to allow customers to use their gift certificates to cover gratuities. Obviously, that will be the last gift certificate that we buy from China City! What if we had given a $50 gift certificate to a friend as a gift, only to find out that when they tried to use it, they had to pay for the gratuity out of their pocket, when the gift certificate clearly had enough value to cover the gratuity?!? Let's be clear - in December of 2016, we handed China City cash for a gift certificate. $100 for $100. They have been holding our $100 since then. To then be told 3 months later that we can't use that $100 for 'goods and services' at their establishment (gratuity is for a service, right?) is horrific. So, accept this review as fair warning - gift certificates at China City aren't 'the same as cash'. They can't be used to cover an excellent server's gratuity. read more

Great gluten free options and the food was tasty. The service was little odd and the staff seemed tired. No one was rude, they just were just disorganized and phased out. We had the Brussel sprouts and green beens which came GF automatically. Both were pretty good but not awesome. Overall a nice experience but not a place I'd come back to Freeland for. read more

I'll have to admit that at first glance, a Chinese food restaurant on the island is something we thought would be sub par. After looking at the menu and most of be reviews, it looked promising and we thought we'd give it a shot. My wife is experimenting with a gluten free diet, so we thought our options were limited. The server informed us most any dish can be made gluten free and we decided on a rice noodle dish, Kung po chicken, and green curry chicken. We were pleasantly surprised that each dish was extremely flavorful and well executed. The proteins were cooked very well, and veggies cooked to a perfect doneness. My wife and I were very hungry so called in our order and did curb sode pick up. The good was the pick up. It was ready right when I got there. It cost 60 plus dollars. I got the happy family sizzling platter and my wife got the house beef with green beans as well as some egg rolls and some crab cheese won tons. Let's start with the egg rolls. They were not home made but seemed to be almost tasteless ones you get 12 to a pack cheap in the freezer at the grocery store. The won tons were the same. The main courses were pretty tasteless. Kind of like they cooked it from a betty Crocker's cook book. My dish only had 2 shrimp and a couple of pieces of over cooked pork. The chicken and beef were ok. My wife's dish was a little better but not that great. I get it that it's a Chinese restaurant on a small island without I large population of Asian and was not expecting authentic Chinese food but this barely counts as Chinese food. For 60 bucks I would rather buy Dariry Qween from clinton then eat there again read more

This is a great place. They have two locations on Whidbey Island. Oak Harbor and Freeland. It is worth the extra time to drive down to the freeland location. The service is excellent and so is the food. Unfortunately there are no individual combination dinners. read more

We have never really eaten here. As I cook chinese for my friends. But my friends like to drink and this is the only place on the island where there is life after 7pm. Karaoke, Dancing, and Trivia are available on different nights of the week. Expect a full bar with monarch as your wells. 10 beers on tap. Drinks are reasonably priced. The island folk is quite friendly once you introduce yourself. On this very weekend night. Shannon introduced me to her first drinking partner. A high school friend who she had one class with. And an old teacher. Boy this island community is very small. It was rap/dance night with at least 10 people on the dance floor. They had one 40 year old guy dancing like michael jackson. The problem was he was built like a line backer and he had a mullet. With cowboy boots, blue jeans, and open dress shirt. People watching here is always interesting. When he danced he would always clear the floor. No one wanted to get hit by the cowboy boots. Later in the night he did the Bucking Horse. I have not seen that since my breaking days. If you need to entertain guest with a nightlife on Whidbey this is it. Don't expect much but just go with the island flow. read more

Call me crazy but I think the reviews on here are bogus. China City in Freeland is AWESOME. Its my favorite Chinese food in NW Washington. The Crab Rangoon appetizers are mouth watering. I had a wedding dinner here and the service was wonderful! I had reservations at a neighboring inn and when they fell through at the last min. I booked China City two weeks before my event. I was nervous, but ended up loving my choice. The staff was completely accommodating, very timely in bringing food buffet style to my guests, and no one left hungry or unsatisfied. Perhaps not the traditional choice, but definitely unforgettable and meaningful. Out of towners commented on the beautiful building and decor. It was a quiet, rainy Tues night, sat at the bar along with 5 other people. I was greeted by a friendly bartender. Walked in 6:30p, happy hour until 7p. Ordered two appetizers and a glass of red wine. Food came out hot, crispy coconut prawns and a bowl of egg flower soup. It was very tasty, just what I was looking for. The wine, 14 hands, was a generous size pour. I have read the negative reviews, for the record, I was happy with my experience. I would recommend happy hour. While visiting the island we decided to have something other than seafood. Went in for lunch and the grounds and interior are very nice. With fountains and manicured landscapes. We had pan fried dumplings which were good but nothing special. Same goes for the szechaun beef and the chicken with veggies lunch special. I will say the egg drop soup that came with lunch special was good and the crab puff had more crab than cream cheese which made it excellent. I would go back if I lived on the island but compared to other Chinese restaurants I've visited I've had better. read more

The food is OK. Not the authentic food they usually have at Chinese restaurants. The food was slightly salty and the best description is La Choy Chinese canned food. I'm not a picky eater, but if my mother wanted to eat Chinese food, I would probably take her elsewhere in Seattle/Bellevue. Good tofu - island hours - salty green beans = nice place to eat during daylight hours While staying in Freeland we asked if there was a bar. This is where we were directed. We ate a big meal of Chinese food which was just ok. My green bean dish was so over salted I couldn't eat more than a few bites. And none of the dishes come with rice, you have to pay extra for that. The veggie rolls were good but not great. We both got drinks and were sitting around chatting when our waiter asked us to leave because he was closing the place down at 9pm! We moved to the bar but they had already done last call again at 9pm! We were shocked that anyplace with a full bar would be shutting down at 9pm on a Friday. My Fam. and I moved to the Island three years ago. We have tried there food about six or so times and I can tell you they would not stay open more they about a week in San Francisco. My family and I were visiting Whidbey Island and staying in Freeland and were driving around looking for somewhere close by our motel to eat and we came across China City. I cannot recommend this place enough. I love Chinese food and this is by far the best Chinese food I have ever had, with the best service and ambience with affordable prices. We had the Deluxe Family dinner which I think cost $15.99 each and it came with soup, appetizers and several different dishes that were all great including my favorite dish of theirs which I highly recommend, their Walnut Prawns. Okay, where else can you find Chinese food, a bed and breakfast, and a bar all in one? My friends and I were visiting and the checked out the bar for the Saturday night karaoke - within the hour the place was packed to the gills and it looked like a cross between bachelorette night, prom night, and a rave ! I think everyone in town showed up for drinks and dancing, and it must be a wild crowd because the bartender started serving our cosmos in plastic cups! (And, within minutes, someone was out with a mop cleaning up spilled drinks.) Party in Freeland! Who knew? Seriously, it was fun. Pretty average Chinese food...the kind where you'll eat it because its always okay anywhere you go, like Mongolian beef or sweet and sour chicken. The building itself is quite nice...dark wood floors, standard Bhuddah shrine near the restrooms, largely windowed. The front of house staff is very nice, although we've had less luck with the waiters when we actually dine in....it seems to take forever to get something. First, half the drinks will come. Then the rest. Then the bowls and spoons (minus one) for the soup. Then the side order of rice. Then the one missing soup spoon. Then the soup. Then an entree. Then plates. Then the rest of the entrees. Ask for refill, wait ten min. I mean, if you're with a group and enjoying the conversation and company, who cares. Just think its kind of unorganized and silly. Because of the above, we usually will just order the take out and bring it home. To end on a positive note: the Walnut glazed Shrimp is quite good...we always have to order two entrees because the seafood lovers in our family fight over it :) read more

One of very few Asian restaurants on Whidbey Island. The food is good quality. Prices are reasonable. Pretty swanky accommodations but with the casual island attitude. We don't eat animal products so it's nice they have a few vegan options. The clientele is predominantly old and white (can verify with the chop suey and egg foo young options), so it's likely not to have a lot of vegan patrons (or chopsticks on the table). Vegan soups and appetizers as an option for the lunch combo would be a nice small step. Instead we have to buy the entrees. We tried the bar a few weeks ago. Service was pretty bad and TV's blaring everywhere. Takes a bit away from the swanky feel. We'll come back as long as they have some food options. Please add more!!!! read more

China city is a beautiful place, decent for a date without being pricey. The service is good and the food is a touch above average for the Seattle area. The Walnut Shrimp is really good. Happy hour is a great deal and seems to be a hang out for the senior crowd. The younger crowd comes in later! Outdoor seating on a lovely patio is available seasonally. Overall, China City is a safe bet. One downer - the crab rangoon uses imitation crab and they are really awful. There isn't enough sweet and sour sauce in the world to make those bad boys palatable. Last evening we had an urge for Chinese and gave it a chance. Glad we did, our order we stuck to the basics. Fresh and tasty, prepared well, service prompt, attentive, decor pleasant. I will start by saying that you don't have to knock my socks off when it comes to Chinese cuisine, just present it well, make it tasty (or at least have it taste like it should), make the portions appropriate, and watch the temperature. China City exceeds those most basic standards and always manages to make my family's visits worth the trip! The biggest wow -- the Mandarin Shrimp! The beef dishes are always tender and very flavorful. Tried the veggie fried rice this time and realized I don't have to have meat in EVERY dish I eat and can still enjoy it. Tack on a bill (with tip) of well under $100 for six adults and I'll be back in the ferry line soon! OMG, walking into this place you feel like you're really in for a treat, the decor is marvelous but the thrill is simply removed once the food arrives. For one, every thing is ala carte unlike any other Chinese restaurant out there, which is okay as long as the food quality can back it up. My wife had the Barbecue pork chow mein which looked like a lunch portion that was virtually all noodles with little flecks of pork and very scant vegetables. I ordered General's chicken with a side of brown rice (ala carte) and what I got was deep fried chicken nuggets rolling around lonely on a plate with some sweet spicy sauce drizzled over the top of them...totally nothing creative about this food. Definitely not what I would expect for $40. Panda Express has this place beat by a long shot as far as their food goes but the building was cool, to bad my interest wasn't to go there and see a cool building. read more

Dry flavorless beef fried rice, walnut chicken drowned in a beef gravy whose worst enemy was time, chow mien which was nothing but some dry noodles and pieces of chicken, egg rolls that in reality were spring rolls and just OK, walnut shrimp wraps which were actually pretty good, and finally a combination platter which almost reached OK. Most of my life, I have been eating Chinese food at one of the best restaurants in Seattle Chinatown; and its the oldest restaurant in all of Seattle because the food served is so good. So we are naturally wary of eating out at a new Chinese restaurant because the quality of food served is usually poor most of the time. But today my sister and I stopped by the "China Town" restaurant this afternoon, and all I can say is (((WOW))) Based upon the two main dishes we ordered the 'Shrimp Chop Suey' and the 'Shrimp & Walnut with Honey' along with a side bowl of rice. I would rank these two dishes at the top with the best-of-the-best !! The Shrimp they used tasted fresh and was very delicious. The sauces they used in both dishes were delicious. I plan to return to try other dishes they serve, and I am hoping they also rank at the top with the best-of-the-best. SideNote: They also serve a imitation crab in a dish that I will not touch because I am highly allergic to the chemicals; and I prefer to eat fresh real seafood. read more
