She compared the quality and taste of the food at Cheng's to Peter Chang's (either Peter Chang's-Herndon, or Mama Chang Fairfax). A high compliment. But she said the value is better at those places' AYCE options than what we got at Cheng's, and I agree. If you've been to none of these places, you have to try them all at least once.

Two egg rolls and the total came to $25.25. No surprises, nothing out of the ordinary. If you had told me this had come from my favorite- now sadly closed - Chinese restaurant, I would have never known the difference. And there in lies what I think makes a good Chinese restaurant: predictability. American Chinese food is a distinct cuisine with the same menus, the same waving Buddah and melamine plates. The difference is quality, and the taste of your favorite meal. I am sad that my favorite place closed, but Beijing Tokyo is my new Chinese food restaurant, and I think it's pretty darn good.

I haven't eaten inside the restaurant but I still give it 5 stars because this is the best General Tso's I've eaten in the area. Its no surprise that Fairfax County isn't known for its super fab chinese food, but still I remained hopeful that I could find one, just ONE place where I can order delicious General Tso's. At least when I took out 2 lunch specials. I had the double-cooked pork and the shrimp lo mein. Both containers were packed like sand bags. Full and dense. Both orders came with fried rice and an egg roll. I had the option of choosing the egg roll or a soda - I think an old menu image says it comes with both, but you only get to choose one now. The lo mein was flavorful (about 42 times more flavorful than that panda place). The shrimp were medium size and numerous. The whole dish had a good number of shrimp and vegetable bits throughout. The double cooked pork was great - on par with many of the other good take out restaurants in the area. It had a wide range of vegetables. The pork was cooked in thin strips rather than the broad thin slices the way some other places do it. The spice was mild. Maybe it could have been a little stronger, but it was fine. The accompanying fried rice was ok. I actually prefer white rice so I'll have to ask them next time I go back if that's an option even though the menu says only fried rice for the lunch specials. (I'm definitely going back.) The fried rice was short-grained rice. Maybe some people don't notice or care, but I prefer the rice to be medium- or long-grained. Short-grained rice and Chinese take out don't quite match, and with the sauciness of the double-cooked pork, eating this stickier rice reminded me of a Japanese teriyaki or gyudon dish. The egg rolls were meh. Slightly better than some other take out places where they're just fried blobs of cabbage-like mush. If your need to quench your thirst is strong, then you should trade the egg roll for a soda. This place is strictly take out. There are no tables for dining in - only a long bench and a few chairs to sit on while waiting for your order. The lady behind the counter was quick and efficient, but friendly. One of the old reviews complained about being rudely treated when asking for packets of sweet and sour (duck) sauce and mustard. Without asking, my order came with a handful of soy sauce, duck sauce, and spicy mustard packets, as well as two fortune cookies. There's a hand written sign near the cashier offering chili oil for 25 cents. There's also a gumball machine (probably 25 cents, too). But if you're going to buy one of them with that quarter in your pocket, I'd go for the chili sauce. The gumballs are probably from 1997. This place is A-1 in my book. At least for now.

The dinner combinations come with fried rice and choice of egg roll or soup. I selected wonton soup and hot and sour soup. While I was waiting for my order, the staff (which I think might be all family) were talking to each other in Mandarin, which for me, lends a lot of credence to the quality of the food here. The younger woman at the cash register was very friendly. The shrimp and broccoli was really good. It comes with the standard Americanized Chinese dark sauce which has a pretty sweet taste, but what really stood out for this dish was the large shrimp. There were 7 very large shrimp and large chunks of fresh broccoli. My one big complaint with this dish and the other dinner special is the fried rice that comes with it. It's really just soy sauce fried rice. There were no peas, carrots, or onions in this. Just white rice tossed in a wok with some soy sauce. It was really not flavorful and I would have preferred just plain rice. The chicken with garlic sauce came with strips of chicken, julienned celery, carrots, and bamboo shoots, a lesser amount of julienned wood ear fungus, slices of water chestnuts, and a scant amount of green onion. I thought the variety of vegetables here was really great. The garlic flavor was not so strong (I would have liked it stronger), but the sauce had a mild spice to it and was overall really tasty. The double-cooked pork (or "twice-cooked" at other places) was great. It also came chock full of vegetables, including green cabbage, green bell pepper, thin-sliced carrot rounds, and sliced white mushrooms. The flavor of the sauce was not as sweet as you'd find in this dish at other Chinese restaurants (e.g., China King), and it wasn't as spicy, either. I think it being less sweet made it just right. The soups were mediocre. The hot and sour soup was neither very hot (spicy) nor sour. It did come with a good traditional selection of ingredients, including tofu, bamboo shoots, egg white, mushrooms, and wood ear fungus. I probably wouldn't get it again unless I were motivated to put it on the stove and add more white pepper and Chinese vinegar to it to pump up the flavor. The wonton soup had unremarkable light broth, and three meat-filled wontons. The wontons themselves were pretty good, but overall, the soup didn't excite my taste buds. I mentioned that the menu is well-priced. Some primary dishes are featured as lunch/dinner combos and come with the (uninteresting) fried rice and either soup or egg roll. The portion is smaller than if you were to order the regular menu item, but at about $1.50 cheaper, if you're fine with soy sauce rice and unremarkable soup, then they're a great deal. Even the regular menu items are well-priced for the portion size. I've actually eaten from here 2 or 3 other times but never got around to writing a review. All the food here is pretty scarfable - tasty enough for one to order more than enough and then overeat in one sitting. I'm looking forward to my next meal at this place.
