I always seek out places to get my fix of siu mei, and Ying Cantonese BBQ in the Fairfax Great Wall food court repeatedly came up as among the best in the area. I decided to check out the stall during a grocery run on a rare outing without my wife. The stall was manned by a friendly couple, and I opted for my go to three meat combo over rice. The total damage ended up being around $20, which felt a touch pricey for the quantity of meat I received. The duck ended up highlight of my three item box. The bird possessed the appropriate amount of seasoning and retained crispy skin and juicy meat despite the 25 minute drive home. I like my char siu a little more, well, charred, but the marinade on the meat had a good sweet-savory balance and the craving was satisfied. The roast pork tasted strictly ok, and while the crackling offered a shattering crunch I found both the meat and skin far too salty. I would not order this specific item next time. The compulsory vegetable component amounted to a few slices of Napa cabbage. Overall, Ying is a decent if not slightly pricey option to get your fix of Cantonese style roast meats. From a lunch rice plate to a large order for a holiday event, their service and quality is top notch. We absolutely love their roasted pig and char siu. Their rice plate comes with a heaping serving of your protein choice and a sauteed vegetable of their choice. Some days it's bok choy, other days it's cabbage. Roast pig has a crispy crunchy skin and salty savory meat. The char siu is wonderful with rice, we sometimes order a lb to bring home for noodle soup. If you order by the lb, they go by full lbs. My parents and I stopped by the Great Wall Supermarket last weekend for groceries and I've heard great things about Ying Cantonese BBQ, so it was an extra reason to drive all the way here. We got the roast duck and the char siu (BBQ roast pork). The roast duck was for sure the star of the show. The skin was so fatty and juicy, full of flavor, and the duck meat was tender and fresh. This is the kind of duck we would not need to drench hoisin sauce in because it is so good on its own. You have the option to buy 1/4, 1/2 or a whole duck! If I'm ever in the area, I would definitely buy some to treat myself. The char siu was good, but not very flavorful. Pretty bland compared with the duck. Unless you make your own char siu at home, this is a pretty good option if you are really craving it. Pricing isn't cheap-cheap, but I'd highly recommend.
