Went to China Garden in Chelsea for Christmas-night takeout. Seems like all of Chelsea had the same idea. They were slammed. The whole small staff was working so hard to get all the orders filled as quickly as possible. When I made it home with our order, everything was perfect, hot, and delicious. We've ordered the coconut shrimp, and Mongolian combo. The food is not very tasty, very oily. It said that the Mongolian dish had crispy noodles but there was little pieces of broken noodles soaked in oils. Didn't really get to enjoy the coconut shrimp either, it had a heavy coating of fried dough. I though it was going to be lightly fried and served with a ginger like sauce but not too terrible, could still taste the shrimp. I wouldn't recommend. I use to eat at this restaurant all the time when I lived in Chelsea, and need to start getting back out there for some take-out more often. I always got my food through their drive-up window after calling to order. The food was always on time, and the service was always great. The food itself is solid for a Chinese restaurant. I have had better, but I have definitely had worse. If you currently live in Chelsea, I would definitely add this one to your list of take-out options! We live in Chelsea and I order from them all the time. Their food is ALWAYS good. I avoided them originally because I thought it would be your usual blah strip mall Chinese food. I was wrong. Their food is always good and I feel we are very lucky to have them in Chelsea. I have never had the buffet so I cant really comment on that. By the way; the guy from New York who commented here will never be satisfied by anything he finds in Alabama because as I am sure he will be quick to remind us; nothing is as good as it is in New York. read more

While I have been in the restaurant once to eat at the buffet, generally speaking my family uses this as a carry out place. The Buffet was ok, nothing which grabs my interest as it seemed more typical fare than anything else. Service in the carry out window is generally fairly good. The person who takes your call always makes sure they have exactly what you ordered. I will have to admit over the years (since 2003-ish) the service has gotten better, and dare I say, more friendly :) Not ONCE has my order ever been wrong. And when they say it will be read in X minutes... it is. Like clockwork. You can set an atomic clock to their punctuality. That said, the food is good, but typical for many restaurants like this in smaller towns. My kids adore the house lo mein, and I typically go for the beef with broccoli or some type of chow mein. The Mrs goes for the Happy Family, or something to that effect. The fried rice is generally very good, and many times I get that for my entrée. :) The soups are hit and miss. Our staples, Hot and Sour and WonTon, are generally very good, but can (esp with the Hot and Sour) be inconsistent with the spices or the sourness. Overall, this is a great business in the Chelsea area and will for certain rely on their services when the want for Chinese take out is needed. read more

I'm eating the buffet now, risking my health. The food is barely warm and when I ask the waiter about the food temp, he shrugged and says " is hot enough". I assure you this food is not hot enough and I've been here 35 minutes. Not once has any food temps been taken. The trays aren't even 25% full so It isn't cold because the trays are over filled. This is scary and I won't be back. They don't care if the food is cold. The food is mediocre but might be decent if warm. There is boiled shrimp on the child side. They are lying on Saran wrap stretched over the tray. The tray had no ice so the only cold is from under the tray. Y'all. read more

I used to eat here all the time. I think it must be under new management because the buffet sucks now. The staff there is slow and speaks no English. The buffet was almost empty and food cold at 12:05. i got up to pay and saw all the staff eating lunch in the back on the prep table. The service I received was terrible. They tried to charge me for a cup of ICE!!! Ridiculous! This place was over priced and I did not find the food as enjoyable as others have said. My sesame chicken was more like sweet and sour chicken with sesame seeds on top of it. The guy at the front desk never looked me in the eye and was always bouncng up and down.
