I grew up in Rensselaer and my memories of China Garden are very fond. I know it's just a Chinese place but when you're in a town as small as Rensselaer a place becomes a memory. I remember when they were new when I was little. So I grew up eating at this place got to know the owners. Jim and Jun are incredibly nice people. I remember telling my mom when I graduated from high school all I wanted for food was China Garden. My mother jokingly told them I said that and they drove all the way out to my house in the country during my open house and brought me a ton of Chinese food. C'mon, how sweet is that? I moved to Florida and Jun would randomly give my mother presents to send to me. I got married and she gave me the cutest candle. I have yet to find another Chinese restaurant as dedicated to their guest as them. Not only with service but with food. I always order chicken with broccoli with garlic sauce. Sometimes switching it up with tofu. It's not a glamours place but I still have yet to find any to compare to it! I always make sure I go here when I visit my parents! read more

I'm so disappointed. September 9th 2025 I ordered a lunch special of beef and broccoli. The rice was like pea gravel(way overcooked). The beef and broccoli we completely burnt. I never ate any of it. There seems to be one option for Asian food in Rensselaer, Indiana. That fact must be the only thing that keeps them open. I was warned in advance that the kids from the college next door don't think highly of the place and we know college kids will eat almost anything. I should have taken that warning and stayed away. We were there at dinner time. Just one small table of college kids when we arrived. No other dine-in patrons arrived while we were eating and one woman came in for a to-go order. Not a big flow of customers. I'm accustomed to Chinese restaurants in Chicago where there seems to be one on every block and they are still super busy. Another warning sign I should have stayed away. We ordered an appetizer of Crab Rangoon, and two combination plates, one Sweet & Sour Pork, one General Tso's Chicken. Both combo plates came with an Egg Roll and choice of steamed or fried rice. The Crab Rangoon was so saturated with oil that it poured on to the table as I bit in to it. The flavor of the filling wasn't very good either. Bland and no seasoning. The Sweet & Sour Pork was better than I expected. The pork wasn't too tough and the breading wasn't too thick. There wasn't a lot of flavor but the sweet and sour sauce helped a bit there. The fried rice had been fried at some point much earlier in the day. The rice was bright yellow, had small chucks of fried onion and pork, and was fairly dry and tasteless. The egg roll was saturated in oil, the wrapper way too thick, and cabbage inside soggy and bland. The General Tso's Chicken was fairly good with an almost crunchy breading and flavorful sauce. But the same egg roll here as with the other order was an useless addition. The seating and ordering area seemed fairly clean with just some minor issues. The dark hallway to the bathroom was strange and the half powered light inside the bathroom seemed to be trying to hide some extreme filth. Seriously dirty and not kept up. If this one important area of cleanliness is this bad what does the food prep and storage area look like?!? About five hours after eating here we got sick. Real sick. It was the only meal of the day we had eaten together and we hadn't eaten after that. So the source of illness had to be China Garden. When I called to let them know all the guy would say to me was "Exchange, no refund!" I suggest you stay away. Go eat pizza or McDonalds.... anything else but here. read more

I love this place. Prices reasonable, service efficient and fast, servings generous! The only minor complaint I have is that the food labeled spicy is not spicy at all. I realize that they probably have to adjust for local tastes and most Hoosiers can't handle the heat, but I wish the orange chicken and hot and sour soup I ordered was about five times spicier than it was. read more

My husband and I decided to follow up a drive through the country with some takeout from China Garden. There are truly no words for what we encountered. There were tables with full plates of food just left sitting there by people who found the food as disgusting as we did. My husband couldn't eat his at all. He said it had no taste and was mushy. We tried the teriyaki chicken. Money wasted! I was a customer when the China Garden first opened and it was great. Not going back. First time me and my boyfriend went, they tried to take my boyfriend's wallet. And he ordered Chow Mein (which says clearly underneath it "with crispy noodles") and did not come with noodles at all. Then they aruged back that we were wrong when we questioned them. Then 2 minutes later, grabs a plate from behind him and gives it to us and it is exactly what my boyfriend ordered, and acted like nothing was wrong. Today, my boyfriend ordered the same thing, and it came out wrong again, and they argued loudly and rudely to us again that we were wrong. So we left. read more

I am from NYC, and honestly I do not expect great Chinese food in this town, however, it took me by surprise. Great portion and very tender meats with lots fresh veggies... and they actually use different sauce for each dish (not those One sauce for all deal). The price is awesome too. Highly recommend- Tofu with black bean sauce (slightly fried tofu with lots of sweet onions, snow peas and carrots real black bean sauce!! General Tso's chicken is also great, with thin fried dough and tender meat glazed with perfect tangy sweet/savory sauce. All comes with fluffy white rice. Another thing i liked is that when you eat in, they serve the food on PLATES and give you metal utensils...not those Styrofoam plates and plastic knife in most of Chinese take out place. read more

Myself and the family will not be going back. We had never been there, my son has peanut oil allergy. First thing I asked, was do they use peanut oil. The answer, of coarse, was no. An hour and half later we are in the emergency room. Sometimes, they should allow us to legally dismantle a place, I would be happy to do so. read more

I am a local. A few months ago, China Garden was sold. The vibe is gone and while the food is technically ok, it is a bit off from how it used to be. Not to be too picky but nobody in the kitchen is wearing a hat or hair net or gloves while handling cooked food. They have gone from 5 stars to 2 until they hey their act together. read more

Wow! For over 17 years this was our favorite for Oriental food. We ordered our favorite beef/chicken with broccoli combo. It was served on a very small plastic to go container instead of the usual plate. Portion was half of what it use to be. But worse, the meat was under cooked, and some kind of lunch or deli meat. It was not the usual tender chunks of meat that has been served for years. The place was empty, should have been our first clue. Problems either new owners, mngmt or just the rotten economy in the area. Sorry to see it go. read more

I grew up in Rensselaer, and every time I visit I always try to get some Chinese. The food is amazing. I have always loved their food. Of course they might screw up now and then, but who doesn't? I'm not a Chinese restaurant expert by any means but, I love their egg rolls. I have had both kind, pork & shrimp recently and they are really really good if you ask me. went to this fine establishment with my husband Albert (I call him Alfred sometimes,which he doesn't much appreciate that is his brother's name) a few years back and we had a great time. I was meaning to write a review for many years, but just got around to it today. So I got on the computer, my grandson helped me make the account after he was done playing fork knife. I told him that I wanted my account name to be farleyagnes1948 so I hope that is what is is. Anyway before I wrote my review I was shocked to see some of the things posted on this internet. people were saying that The china garden is apparently a thief's den, where wallets are stolen by the order! I would never believe such a thing. The owner's introduced themselves to me, June and Jim, and they had the nicest daughter as well. The food was great and the ownership was just dandy. The only thing I would bother to mention is the cashier a cute little ginger boy with blond hair did not seem interested in stories I told about my husband who got the shrimp and broccoli. Anyway if I left my purse there I'm confident that they would return it asap,knowing those people. im so glad that even after things like pearl harbor we can enjoy each others food and culture at china garden. read more

We have been going to China Garden for years and always enjoyed the food. However, tonight we arrived at 8:20pm and they refused to serve us because they close at 9:00pm. We do not live in town; we drove over from Kentland just for China Garden. VERY DISAPPOINTED. 40 minutes is more than enough time to eat and leave so they can get out in time. Not serving customers for 40 minutes before you close is false advertising of your hours. Shame on you, China Garden. read more

Anyone that goes to this place and finds it anything other then dog food has to have their taste buds stepped on w/a golf shoe! I ordered the Kung pow chicken,the wife,sweet and sour chicken,and our sons had a few egg rolls. The chicken was slimey and had the consistency of soy sauce drenched clams.The egg rolls were completely flavorless w/a flashback to the teenage years of sampling freezer isle egg rolls to never be attempted again! Ive had hand made,peanut butter infused egg rolls in Chicago that would make any Hoosier drive miles for a return trip to enjoy again,and melt in your mouth Chinese food that would be the envy of any fine Chinese establishment in the Midwest! THIS IS NOT IT! This was a colossal waste of $31.00 and an hour of our time! If the people of Indiana consider this decent food in any capacity,they need to roll over their tongues w/a lawn mower and hopefully the one that grows back will smarten them up to what good food really is! This place is TERRIBAD! The only thing worse was the emaciated server that got pissed when we simply asked for an extra plate for one of our boys.Don't waste your money. read more
