Very disappointing experience. The burger had almost no seasoning and tasted very plain. The Caesar salad looked like it came straight from a bag of salad mix, thrown on a plate with some plain cooked chicken on top. It didn't taste fresh or well prepared at all. They also couldn't cook the steak correctly. I asked for medium, but it came out with very uneven cooking. Parts of it were undercooked while other parts were more done, which made it seem like the steak might have been frozen before being cooked. For the price, I expected much better quality and effort. We were at least hoping for a place with a good drink selection and decent food. What we found was Oak and Barrel, with locally sourced food options, an impressive menu, and bourbon selection, wine, plus house made desserts. I selected the brisket meatloaf, which was topped with whiskey peppercorn cream, horseradish and crispy potato, served with cheddar mashed potatoes. Mr. R had the smoked prime rib. Both meals were very good, and I couldn't get over the crispy potatoes topping! It had a similarly to cellophane noodles, but even more delicate, and much more flavorful. I drank the Italian Cabernet, which was nice, and a large pour of wine. We sat at the bar, and the staff was bustling, but we were constantly checked up on though not in an obtrusive way. The bar area has a warm log themed vibe. They feature special apps, dinner features, and cocktail specials. The night we visited there was a margarita flight. This was an unexpected find in Monticello but it's one we'll be talking about for sure! read more

Tonight was our first time here and we are already planning a trip back. We were seated right away, waited on immediately by Fonda who was very attentive, friendly and helpful when we were deciding on our selections. My husband ordered a Coors light and I got a Blueberry Lemondrop which was very tasty and arrived quickly. We chose the crispy Cajun alligator and lobster mushrooms as our appetizers and were not disappointed. Our dinners were the Hoosier Pork Tenderloin with sweet potato fries and the surf and turf. The tenderloin was large, well seasoned and my husband enjoyed the toppings it came with. The sweet potato fries had a bourbon maple mayo for dipping... hello my new friend! The Surf and Turf consisted of 3 filet medallions (prepared just as I ordered) and 3 huge seasoned, grilled shrimp. Grilled onions, mushrooms and onion straws on top and I got the whiskey peppercorn cream on the side. Asparagus and smoked Yukon potatoes rounded out the meal. I took a portion of it home along with a slice of pumpkin cheesecake we'll share later. This was a great dinner experience for us from the moment we entered until we got in our car to leave. Every employee we encountered was polite and professional and they worked together seamlessly to ensure things were running smoothly. Our food took a little longer than planned and without asking, we were given a free dessert! We honestly didn't even wait that long. I'm genuinely very surprised at the amount of good reviews this place has! Went here last night for Valentine's Day, so granted, probably one of their busiest days of the year, and they had a reduced menu. We got seated in the "family" room for some reason, despite being a party of 2, which was very loud and informal for Valentine's Day? We ordered waters and drinks, and both of our waters had brown stuff in the bottom of the glasses, which is disgusting for an upscale restaurant! (See photo attached)!! Do better! We got rolls as an appetizer, they came with cinnamon butter which was good, but the inside of the rolls were not even warm enough to melt the butter..? Then we waited ~45 mins for the meal to come out. My date ordered the parmesan crusted chicken, which had good flavor but was very dry. I ordered the cavatappi alfredo and added lobster to it (+$9), and when it was brought to our table it had been sitting for so long that all of the noodles on top were completely dry and had no alfredo on them whatsoever. The alfredo sauce literally tasted like milk with a little bit of cheese and entirely sank to the bottom of the plate. Storebought jars of alfredo are better than whatever I got served, especially since half of the pasta had no alfredo at all! I could genuinely have bought better alfredo pasta in the frozen aisle at Walmart. I haven't even mentioned the lobster. I'm not sure what I was doing ordering seafood from a restaurant in Indiana, but I figured their lobster and seafood must be alright since it was in 3 different dishes on the Valentines menu. But this was probably the worst seafood I have ever had. The lobster was so chewy and cold, and had no flavor at all. This was a disgrace. I can't believe we would have this kind of service on Valentine's Day at a restaurant that had seemingly great reviews! As a side note, we did get the chocolate lava cake, which was decent. Super duper impressed with Oak and Barrel. This is a great restaurant for large groups or families with picky eaters because there is something for everyone on this menu! They have really unique options but also more simple options as well. We started off with the rolls which come with cinnamon butter. Incredible. I got the Wagyu Burger and my friend go the salmon and we split them! The burger was so good! Salmon was also delicious. The only negative was the asparagus that came with it was not cooked at all. The restaurant itself was very nice and our server was one of the best we've ever had, however, the "prime rib" we ordered was definitely not prime rib. We've enjoyed prime rib in the past and have even smoked our own, but this was no more than a sirloin steak. The medium I ordered was almost raw when it came to the table. I have yet to have a bead experience. The staff is well informed about specials as well as suggestions. Now for the food... I have yet to have a bead exercise here. I have tried just about everything on the menu. I am particularly impressed with the seafood selections. Steak, rice, veggies and seafood are cooked perfectly. Can hardly believe a place like this is in Monticello. It's a bit of confused identity. Decor is Texas Roadhouse lite with wood paneling everywhere and the country music blaring. Chef driven menu has some interesting twists on classic dishes. We had a fabulous and knowledgeable server. Which can make such a difference. Our starters -- French Onion Soup and Lobster Bisque Soup were divine. Entrees were good, too. Pork chop with whiskey sauce, potatoes and BBQ corn (our fave side) and steak with caramelized onions and mushrooms, garlic mash potatoes and Brussels sprouts. We also enjoyed our cocktails and wine. Oak and Barrel is one of those restaurants that would fit in absolutely anywhere. It's hard to pick a single way in which it stands out. The premises are great, with tastefully themed decor, ample seating and both dining and bar seating. The live music in the bar was a nice touch. The menu is outstanding, with a good (but not excessive) number of unique offerings, including such things as bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, tiger prawn and lobster scampi and blackened grouper. The ingredients are locally sourced where appropriate. On the drink front, we didn't sample the bourbons and wines, but the draft beer list was top notch. The wait staff was completely up to speed with everything on the menu and drinks list. Definitely a keeper. read more

If the hostess tries to tell you the bar rail is reserved and you can't sit there and you see only two people there don't believe her. We like to sit at the bar with just two, I've been a waitress and a hostess so I get sharing the $$. This was rude and not called for. It has a Southern-woodsy-country vibe and food to match. We started with the Midwest nachos - just incredible. I had the bacon and cheddar meatloaf, with smoked Yukon potatoes and a whiskey cream sauce. The sauce is really great at enhancing the dish, which overall was very well-balanced. They're a great family joint; some places like this overplay the whiskey or beer but these guys keep it in check. That said, I had a bourbon lemonade cocktail and it was delicious, if light on the spirit. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing on the menu but our experience wasn't great. It started with my husband being charged for the wrong order paying and then having to pay for the correct order. Although they fixed the error, the refund won't instantly come back since he paid with card. We did order takeout so normally I know it won't be ask good as if you ate there however the issues we had didn't seem to have to do with takeout. The steak was completely over cooked and dry, ribs were cooked perfectly however they had a very strange flavor to them and brussel sprouts were soggy and covered in oil. Steak also had a lot of oil, yet were dry. The Mac and cheese was also disappointing, it tasted like KFC Mac and cheese but a little fancier. I wouldn't order any of those items again. I was very pleased with the ceaser salad, it was a very large portion, dressing was great croutons tasted made in house and greens were extremely crispy and fresh. The cheesecake was also amazing. This is a newer place. The decor wasn't changed from the previous restaurant that was here. Not a good or bad thing, just information. 3 of us started with the onion soup. It had an over powering Worcestershire flavor but was good. My family tried 2 appetizers. The stuffed mushrooms were so good. Definitely highly recommended!! We also tried the chicken wontons, my daughter and cousin like them but I did not. Main course I had the sirloin and added shrimp. It came with broccoli and red skinned potatoes. My steak was prepared as ordered. My meal was good. My husband got the 16oz ribeye, it also came with broccoli and red skinned potatoes. He said it was ok, over priced for what he got. One of my daughters ordered the prime rib sandwich and that it was ok. There was something seasoning wise on it that she didn't care for but did like it. My other daughter ordered the shrimp and lobster scampi (wouldn't let me take a pic). She loved it. It had tomatoes and asparagus in it and came with garlic toast. My youngest daughter loved the fried chicken sandwich. She loved the sauce on the sandwich and and like the avocado and bacon on it. Our cousin had the ribs, she said they were dry but good.
