"[L]et us sit upon the ground And tell sad stories of the death of kings. . ." Didn't want to write this review, but here we go. . . I first heard about China House a few years back, from a colleague while I was working in Olympia. I'd mentioned that I'm always looking for a good Chinese place since my favorite closed down over a decade ago, and this woman told me she would always stop at China House whenever she was in Auburn. Intrigued, and living in Kent I stopped by and found the food decent, but a touch far afield for frequent visitation. Alas, alack, and woe--No more. During last weeks staycation, I decided to celebrate my last day of freedom by returning to China House for some food, that was a mistake. When I picked up my order the owner was polite making conversation while I waited for my food to finish cooking. Since more then half the problems were that each dish was overcooked, I wish now I'd demanded they bring my order immediately. Still, lulled into a false sense of complacency by the plaques on the wall touting the restaurant as a "Best in Auburn" (2014 and 2015, tellingly), I said nothing when it took longer than expected to prepare my food. I'll go through each dish I ordered from worst to best: 1. Beef Chow Mein: First problem, it was bland. Second problem it was also over cooked, so much so that while it was (barely) edible when I got it, the next day's reheating turned it into an inedible mush I ended up throwing away. I never throw any thing away. EVER. 2. Beef with Broccoli: The only dish not over cooked, still, the dish is bland. Whatever sauce they were using, they didn't put enough in. But my biggest complaint was the meat. It tastes. . .funny. Don't know if it is old or it reacted poorly with an ingredient, but it is so off putting, I've shoved the remainder into my fridge, where it may or may not expire via neglect. 3. Pork Fried Rice: My favorite dish, I can be happy with almost any version of it. . .save this one. Again, it was bland. That's not necessarily a bad thing as some Cantonese style rices are quite bland, but it let's you enjoy the individual flavors of the ingredients. But, again, this was over cooked, and the easiest of the four to tell as the individual rice grains had been split. Bad Juju. 4. General Tso's Chicken: Look, you can tell I'm not some form of hipster purest. I like my sugary American style dishes. This was my favorite dish, unlike the others I've already eaten it all. Still, it was over cooked as I had to do quite the job of work to even pick it up off the plate as my fork seemed barely able to penetrate it. When I did, it was an exercise in frustration as the sauce was gorgeous, and parts of any given nugget would be less overdone to give one an idea of just how good a properly executed dish could be. Conclusion: China House has lost a step or four. Avoid. read more

Pretty much agree with C.I. so not sure why the 5 star rating. China House is basic American Chinese food. There will be a lot of oil left on your plate when you are done eating, and you will need a lot of water later, but most of the menu tastes good enough. I particularly like their curried beef, because when I say "very hot, really really really hot" I will ALMOST break out in a sweat. Their fried rice and stir-fried almond chicken are also at or above par. For dine-in, try the appetizer platter for two, bao bao or something like that and for take-out, try the fried shrimp, mmm oily. But like C.I. says, don't expect your take-out to be ready until 15 minutes after you walk in the place. read more

I recently came back from overseas for the holidays, and got an urge to eat here again. It's been probably over 17 years (yep, China House has been there that long) but my memories of how much I enjoyed the food have stayed with me. I ended up going sometime in the mid afternoon, and there was nobody else in the restaurant. I didn't know if business was slow or I just came at a slow period during business hours. But I was seated promptly and given a glass of water with lemon, along with a kettle of tea. I then ordered the Szechuan chicken and a side order of Pork Fried Rice. The wait for my meal did not take very long and soon enough I was digging in. It's crazy but it tasted just as how I remembered it so long ago. The water chestnuts were still crisp and the portions of meat strips were plentiful. The pork fried rice was a bit sticky but it was a good balance to the sauciness of the Szechuan chicken. I'm an averaged sized guy, but I managed to eat everything despite the portions being fairly big to medium. I skipped breakfast and went in with an appetite. Seeing as how I was going back overseas again within a few days, I ordered a bunch of to go menu items for leftovers. The Broccoli Beef, Garlic Chicken, Garlic Beef, and also more Pork Fried Rice. May, my waitress, even gave me a small cardboard box to hold all the containers in. The cook must have been pretty good at multi-tasking all my dishes because I didn't wait too long for them to be done. I was still in a food coma by the time I got my travel food. I don't know why I waited so many years to come back to China House, but I'm definitely putting it on my to do list every time I visit. read more

I have been going to China House for many years with my family and we always love the food and service. We have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered. Our usual routine when we go to this place is to call in ahead of time and order their delicious pot stickers. They take awhile to cook so we call ahead so we can have them right away. Then we usually order their BBQ pork which if you go after 5 it is warm and delicious. Their sizzling rice soup is so good too! I like to dip my BBQ pork in the soup! (Sounds weird but HEY!) The mongolian beef is amazing as well as their BBQ pork fried rice. Anything you get here I am sure you will be impressed with. They always have the place clean and the food comes out pretty fast. Even when it is a little busy. It is good to go in groups because the dishes are big portions and that way you can order a couple different things and share to get a variety. read more

I have been searching for a good Chinese food restaurant for a while now and have tried a bunch of them in the area that were ok but definitely not as good as I'd hoped. After searching through various chinese food places for the 100th time and being frustrated by all of the mixed reviews I decided to take a gamble on this place and I am so glad that I did! After reading through the mixed reviews of this place I figured it would end up being mediocre like every other place I've tried but it ended up being FAR BETTER!!! Normally I end up only liking maybe 2 or 3 things out of the various items that come with the Family Dinners but I ended up liking every single thing that we got from China House. We got the General Tso's chicken, Chow Mein, Pork fried Rice, Fried Almond Chicken, Potstickers, Mongolian Beef, BBQ pork, Fried prawns and wonton soup (the China House Special Dinner) and all of it was amazing. The employees were so friendly when I picked up my order and they packaged everything really well and had it all laid out in a cardboard box so it was easy to transport everything home. This is definitely going to be where I get our Chinese food from now on. I highly recommend giving this place a try! read more

My introduction to Szechuan chinese food was here back in the early 90's when it was operated by Maggie and her husband Chef Wong I believe was his last name for about 10 years or so as they moved to another location in Redmod. The Mandarin style food was a solid 10 but the cantonese type was around a 7. As a restaurant up the street had solid 10 for cantonese style food. Whats the difference. Well sweet and sour is cantonese and General Tao's is Szechuan (mandarin) Etc. The fried rice was never perfect but the Mandarin dishes were mind blowing. Just as the restaurant down the street was a 10 for cantonese but their mandarin dishes were about a 7. So restaurants seem to excel on the food they are good at and not so much on the other styles of chinese food they offer. The new owners have carried on the tradition the best they can but I agree that it could be better. As last time I went the hot and sour soup was watered down, plus they changed the recipe of the General Taos chicken to be weaker and no longer spicy. The vegetables not so fresh etc. Maybe they are tired and burnout out over the years and are not trying so hard to win the customers. But without a doubt it is still good as I stop by once a year or so but I used to eat there 3 times a week in the past. Still better than most chinese restaurants for Mandarin style food I think. As this was my favorite at one time and never found another better in my travels for 25 years now. I wished them luck and try to improve their dishes. read more

Just got back from this terrible experience. We ordered the general tsos and the sweet and sour pork. I didn't know you could by law let meat sit under a heat lamp so long it turned black UNDER the batter. I took 2 bites and was done, the other people in my party did similarly. When we complained the chicken and pork was desiccated beyond edibility, the owners showed no interest in making it right on the bill. They did offer to make us more of the jerky they called 'food', but by that point we had started to worry about food poisoning. We took nothing from this store, and were charged full price to leave with empty stomachs. I urge you to chose a different place to eat, because China House evidently doesn't care about the health or safety of its customers, and certainly doesn't care about their happiness. We just moved to the area and the Chinese/teriyaki spot near our house (Ringo Wok) was apparently closed on Sunday so I had to try a new place and China House was it. They have an online menu which is a huge help. I called in an order and was told 15-20 minutes. By the time I got there, I was actually about 5 minutes late so I figured it would have been done and waiting for me to walk out with, not quite. I ended up sitting in the lobby for an additional 25 minutes waiting as others came in after me for pickup orders and left before I did, makes me thing my order was never put in when I called. At any rate, the food was definitely nothing to write home about either. The Kung Pao Chicken was soupy. Usually the sauce it comes in is a thicker and not pooling out of the styrofoam container. The pot stickers were falling apart as soon as I tried to pick them up and the veggie fried rice was okay, not great....lacked flavor. All in all, not disgusting/gross/terrible/awful but certainly not anything worth going back to and I likely won't. Lady working the front desk was very polite though!! read more

China house is decent. I'd give them 3.5 stars but I'm rounding down because of consistency. They make things a little more spicy than the average place. I've ordered the Mongolian Beef twice, once it wasn't spicy at all, the second time, it was super spicy. Before that I had the kung pao chicken, it was also spicy of course but not overly spicy for kung pao. I've only been here for lunch, expect to spend about $8-$10. Very reasonable IMHO considering I paid $9 and change yesterday for Subway. We were looking for a new Chinese restaurant and decided this was somewhat close so we would give it a try. WOW were we happy. The food was great, fresh, hot and well packed since it was to go. The restaurant was clean and the service was very polite. We ordered Moo Sho Pork, beef and broccoli and pork fried rice, The vegies and the pork were so fresh, the pork was real pork not the packaged BBQ pork the broccoli was very fresh and it all was prepared without the usually extra oil. We will defiantly go back, it really is the best Chinese restaurant in the area. read more

First time coming here. My first impression was that the place smelled moldy. Maybe it's the AC ??!! We figure why not try something as a friend said it was good. I ordered shrimp and veggies and my husband order combo number 2. For appetizer we had BBQ pork. The pork was good and fresh. My husband got his meal right away and I had to sit there for 20 mins as they forgot my order. So I picked at hubbies meal as I waited. His general tso chicken was so sticky and overly sweet no spice. After I got my shrimp and veggies I was so excited to try it as it looked wonderful... After about two bites the salt kicked it... We order take out on 02-16-21. It went well getting the order. Everything was OK. We have been getting food from this resturant for years. They always had good fresh food. But lately the quality of some of the food is not as good. The house chow main use to be delicious. But the last couple of time the nood look es tasted gummy and did not taste like chinese noodles. The almond chicken is usually good but that dish is going down hill. The chicken was dry and some of it was tough. I was disappointed with this meal. They claim they have not change chefs but someone is not preparing the dishes as well like they use to, I would still recommend this resturant but not the dishes we had on this date. I had a craving for sweet and sour chicken on my way home from work and decided to stop in for takeout. I asked for sweet & sour chicken and fried rice... $24! But they have a whole meal for $13? I decided to try it anyway, and got my meal home only to find the chicken inedible. It was completely dried out, stringy, and some pieces weren't even breaded. I love this place. It's more stir fried Chinese Food than deep fried and smothered with a sauce like other places I have been. I enjoy the service, the price and the food. Food is very good. We occasionally come to eat and the girls all know us. They are very kind and super nice to the kids. They are all Chinese. It's a different culture. Surprised by the lack of grace on the part of some of the reviewers on here. But that's Yelp for ya! Sometime your food takes a while, but that just means it's made right then. China house is really Americanized food. If you are looking for authentic chinese this isn't for you. But if you are like me and while nursing a hangover want greasy, corn syrupy, artery clogging food, it's great. Their fried rice is amazing. Getting it ala cart is enough for a meal. Its super greasy but my favorite fried rice ever. Their general tso's chicken is also great. Its battered and soaked in corn syrup and spices. This is what panda express wishes they could do. Anything with schezwann in the name pretty much copies this formula. All really good, non at all aunthetic. Their mongolian beef is also excellent. I haven't tried a whole lot of their menu, but things I was disappointed in includes their sweet and sour chicken, their orange chicken and their snow white chicken. The last is terrible IMO. Also they kind of suck at take out orders. I can call 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes ahead, but they don't seem to start making it until I get there. Its a real pain in the ass having to wait on them. I love their hot and sour soup...it's actually hot AND sour...go figure! I also love the chicken chow mein and General tsos.
