A cockroach crawling up the wall caught my attention just as we were finishing our dinner. Reported it (and the specific booth) to the County Health Dept, that went and (supposedly) checked it out. After some of the reviews, I entered with trepidation, but found that I really had a great meal. We ate at 12:30, in the height of the lunch crowd. There are 5 buffet islands, Hot Chinese, hot Chinese and American, Salads, Deserts. We were promptly seated, asked for and got a nice pot of hot tea. The fried dumplings with dipping sauce were my favorite; great flavor, but could have been warmer. The green beans were perfectly seasoned and crisp-tender. They had a few varieties of the obligatory meat bites battered and fried in a sweet sauce, all good. My husband fell in love with their hot and sour soup. read more

We went to China Inn here in Lacrosse/ Onalaska, WI, tonight seemed like a night for Chinese food. I hadn't had Chinese food for over a month or two. The atmosphere entering the restaurant pretty much met you at the door. There was an awful stench as if there was a rotten fish in the entry way to the restaurant. A waitress met us at the door and almost seemed kinda forceful of where she wanted to place us to eat. When we walked up to the buffet bar I immediately spotted several food containers that were either completely depleted or on the verge of depletion. I got some food and took it back to my table. I instantly noticed that the food was cold, stale, and all-round disgusting!!! No one in there seemed to care for this restaurant and you could tell in the food. I was appalled by lack of care. Also, it was only 7:00pm, and they don't close until 9, so why in the world don't you have fresh food and well-stocked fresh food for that matter out and available for guests who visit and want good Chinese???!!!! The man, who seemed like a manager...didn't even ask how the food was...probably because he already knew!!! Even after the awful service, we said, "have a good night". His response was..."uh huh". So, let me add that the customer service is top notch...as you can see. It's not a good way to represent your town for a decent Chinese take out dine-in experience. It surprises me to see people commenting on the cleanliness of the dining area when I've been here dozens of times and never had an issue. It's a buffet area so you need to be mindful that people are rude and get sauces and food everywhere. They do their best to keep the areas clean and stocked but no one is perfect. I've never seen bugs or had an indication from staff they didn't maintain sanitation requirements. If you have complaints talk to a manager and get it addressed at the time of the visit. read more

Dirty floors. Slop buffet. Much of the chicken variations at the buffet were very dry. No apparent/consistent buffet employee patrol. You know, where a dedicated employee ensures the buffet trays are constantly filled, and the slop drops are cleaned up. Did see one employee flick (with a spoon) some dropped pieces of food that landed on the buffet shelf...flicked them back into the food tray. Hmm. ICE COLD bathrooms, no heat at all. It's winter in Wisconsin so you get it. Ice cream is located in a deep freezer chest, which means you have to bend over and stick half your body in to scoop. If you're short, you practically have to crawl in. Two bits of good news... Very fast service ( you go get your own plate and dig in) I did not have an after meal blow-out or vom session. I am new to the Onalaska area and came across this place and thought it would be a great place to try, sadly it's probably the worst Chinese food I've had. The orange chicken was all mushy breading and and had no orange flavor and the chicken didn't taste like chicken. Crab rangoons had less than a teaspoon of cream cheese and no crab and over fried and really greasy. The potstickers were so over done and hard where I couldn't even bite in them. It is like any other Chinese buffet, hit or miss. Depends what time of the day you go. Don't go an hour before they close because they won't have much and what they do have isn't fresh at all. I've made that mistake more than once. But if you go around dinner time or lunch time it is definitely worth it! I love their food but only when it's fresh. You probably don't realize just how good you have it in La Crosse, WI. Of all places. As a husky oriental man, I know my way around the venerable Chinese buffet. And this was the best I've ever had. This superlative includes all the buffets I've been to in my native northern California, where by default one would expect Chinese food to be orders of magnitude better than that in the middle of the Midwest. There was a wide variety of your typical Americanized Chinese fare. Good balance of beef, chicken, pork, and seafood dishes. The broccoli beef and kung pao chicken--always reliable barometers to determine basic competence--were fresh and tasty. Not overcooked, not overpowering. Normally, chow mein in chinese buffets (or as you call it in the midwest, "lo mein") should be avoided since it has a tendency to sit out for long periods of time and become soggy. Not at the China Inn. It was fresh and not overly greasy. I was extremely surprised that I liked the food (given my CA bias). I walked into the restaurant with the bar set extremely low. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be the best I've had in the nation. Also, under $8 for this buffet? I can't begin to tell you the value here. (EDIT: may have been under $7, and maybe even closer to $6) My wife grew up in Onalaska and makes us stop at Happy Joe's (meh) whenever we go back to visit. I've found my must-dine. My family and I have eaten in a few times and gotten take away maybe once every month or two. Take away is generally better. It's... well... 3 out of 5 stars. Not great. Not bad. The buffet - my experience with buffets is that it's largely about timing. You come in at high time, there are lots of hot options and it's fine. You come in and there is only 1 or 2 other tables full, you're more likely to get (c)older food. The staff for us as always been OK. They get your drink orders, they clear your dishes as they pile up, they bring the check. It's a buffet, not a fine French restaurant. So... there you go. I trust the good reviews (at high times) and I'd believe the bad reviews (at low times). My advice - plan accordingly. read more

Went here for the lunch buffet. There wasn't much for selection and the food looked kinda old. After tasting a few of the dishes I wasn't impressed. Our drinks were refilled and dishes taken away promptly. The staff looked kinda gloomy but that may be because it was a Monday lunch. read more

I enjoy Chinese buffets and I've been to quite a few of them. When it comes to my experience at China Inn, I've definitely "experienced better," so it earned the two star rating. I will not return and I don't have high hopes for the other Chinese buffets in the area (since this one had almost twice as many stars as the competition). I'll start with the positive remarks: China Inn has both a lunch and dinner buffet (I went to the latter around 6pm - thirty minutes after they switch to the dinner price). Additionally, they have take-out. The place is fairly clean and the employees are constantly wiping, sweeping, and mopping. The price is fairly inexpensive for a dinner buffet. Without a drink (it only costs $1 extra) and including tax, the meal is $9.50. The waitstaff was not overtly rude, but they were in a huge hurry and acted as I was an inconvenience. I was waved to a table and a waitress yelled from the serving station to see if I wanted a drink. During my entire meal, the server only stopped by once to deliver my water and bill at the same time. While I was at the buffet, I was literally chased around the counter by a woman with a broom, who felt that I was in her way of cleaning. I didn't see anyone smile till I paid my bill. The food itself was cold, barely room temperature; they really need to invest in warming trays or better heat lamps. If I wanted warm food, I had to wait for them to bring out the fresh stuff, which, unfortunately, was mixed in with the cold stuff resulting in a tepid concoction. Typically, I can find a few things that I enjoy; not at this buffet. I spit out half the things that I tried: The Lo Mein was inedible because it was cold, way too greasy, and extremely over-salted. It really tasted like they'd reduced and burned soy-sauce, then added some greasy noodles. The Egg Rolls were frozen/uncooked in the center. The Crab Rangoons were the worst I've ever eaten (cold, unflavored, with a hard? center). There was not one warm item on the entire appetizer counter. You really need to either like Meat & Broccoli or General Tso's Meat because it takes up 70% off the entree counter. They had Beef with Broccoli, Chicken with Broccol, Three Delight with Broccoli, and Triple Surprise with Broccoli. All were the same to me. Thankfully, I like broccoli and it was something I enjoyed at the restaurant. Then there was four versions of a fried chicken covered in a different colored sauce, which were only distinguishable by their level of sweetness. They even had a mushroom dish with the same fried chicken ingredient. Add a salmon, garlic shrimp, greasy green beans, and cold/soggy crab legs for all of the main courses. Oh, I hope you don't want Fried Rice with your meal, because theirs is just plain, yellow rice (no saffron either) with some pees in it. Like I said earlier, some of the food was so bad that I couldn't eat it. Even worse, since no one was waiting on my table, I had to get up and go to the buffet for more napkins. Hunan. Downtown La Crosse. The chef passed away and the owner (Hai) sold. Never have I ever had such incredible food, I never will again, I guess. Asked the guy at the front desk if I could get some paper towels and he offered me an old dish rag, then proceeded to tell me that they didn't have paper towels. Kids under two eat free, but the waitress didn't ask the age of our child and they tried to charge a one year old $5 for a small plate. They removed the charge when asked. This place is terrible. Like most buffets, their food comes prepackaged, I understand that. Although when I went to dine in here, I found fried feathers in the fried chicken that they serve. My colleague and I went to speak to the manager about this and he stated that all their food is inspected by the companies before shipped out. I also understand that, although it is the restaurants job to heat up the food and make sure everything is fine and dandy about the food that they are displaying. The manager also kept making up excuses for the feathers on the chicken saying that chicken come with feathers. They come with feathers but not when you cook them!!! I've gone here many times and it is one of the best buffets in the lacrosse and onalaska residence although many children who are picky with their food may often pick out fried chicken as their food. This is a health hazard!!! After we spoke to the manager and started walking out, one of the workers chased outside after us and started swearing in front of children that were walking into the restaurant!!! This was a disgusting experience of customer service that I've ever received. I am very sorry to hear of the food poisoning that occurred for one of the reviewers here (sorry, should've noted the name - Kelly?) My daughter and I have eaten at this restaurant 100x - no exaggeration. We have never had such a problem. I sure hope you contacted them to let them know. That is awful. My ONLY complaint about this business has been that food is not always ample and hot! It depends on what time of day you visit too, I'm sure. But darn it, it couldn't hurt to ask customers which items they are most interested in during those slower times. IDK - it'd have to help SOME..... maybe. I usually don't like Chinese buffet because the food is often just lumps of meat in salty brown sauce and everything else is fried. China Inn is not like that. The inside is a little tattered, but when we were there for lunch on a Saturday it was packed. Because of that the food was hot and fresh. I have eaten at this buffet multiple times and every time had the same experience with the wait staff (Very Rude)! We were sat down and I noticed the woman in the front almost yelling and telling people where to sit. As soon as we got a waitress she didnt even hardly look at us and just said what do you want to drink? We ordered three waters and took to the buffet. When we got up there I was impressed as always food looked really good and lots of it. I filled up my plate with lots of different chickens, rice and american style food options and headed back to my table. Upon eating I noticed that the food was a weird texture but not bad so we continued to eat and paid and left. 24 hours later everything changed I became violently ill TMI maybe but throwing up and bathroom troubles. I am almost certain I had food poisoning. I threw up so much that I broke multiple blood vessels underneath my face from vomiting.
