We have come up here a couple of times and have had no issues with staff, the environment, parking. Sometimes the app is kind of a hit or miss, but with doing things online, it makes this very simple when you get up there instead of waiting at the windows for a while. The instructors have helped our little snowboard to his potential, enough for him to go on the lifts and the food and drinks have always been great. This year it looks like they improved some of the hang out spots and that is awesome. One thing I would recommend, is more eyes on the bathrooms, there are some that are almost always blocked or out of toilet paper. So maybe more checks on those around the area in general. read more

Be extremely careful with fences installed by ski patrol out of nowhere. They sometimes make mistakes and install fences that do not make any sense that weren't even there that very same day, on the very same line. You will be better off throwing yourself into the ground at high speed to be able to stop on time, and walk around it, or you risk of being threatened like a criminal to cancel your pass, and to only use an easy line. On Friday, January 9th, I used a nice black diamond line 3 times from 9-11:30 am, no fence whatsoever, everything perfectly safe. While trying to run it for a 4th time at around 12:45, I noticed a "safety fence" on exactly the exit of that line, on a place that wouldn't make any sense. I already committed to the line, and was going at a decent speed. I tried to be polite enough, not destroying the fence but rather going under it. The ski patrol was finishing the fence close to where I crossed it, so he proceeded to threaten me like a criminal to cancel my pass and felt with the authority to order me to use Academy only. Weird thing, I tried to run the line again at like 2:30 pm, but planned to use a slightly different exit to avoid that fence, and for some "strange" reason, the fence I crossed and that I was threatened for, wasn't even there anymore. That tells me that someone made a mistake and just put a fence on a place that didn't make any sense whatsoever, and that would have actually made the run more dangerous instead of safer. Not even try to e-mail China Peak, they won't own their mistake, and essentially they will threaten you again over email to cancel you pass. This is not the friendly resort that it used to be anymore, take your business to Dodge Ridge, Bear Valley, or Mountain High, they still have the vibe. read more

Resort is beautiful, amazing views, all of the staff were very helpful. Specially Lindsay and Holly over in guest relations/ticketing. I watched Lindsay get berated by a guest over an issue with the parking lot. Lindsay kept very calm and professional. Lindsay and Holly were able to help me and my partner with our problem. The only thing missing from this resort to make it a 5 star would be the need for updated/more modern chairlifts, the current ones are very slow (20 minutes to the peak) and 3 out of the 4 times I stopped at one of the water refill stations they were all empty. read more

I've been coming to China Peak since I was around 9 or 10 years old, and it's been a big part of my winters for as long as I can remember. Back then, lift tickets and season passes were affordable and made sense for what the resort offered. Since the new ownership took over, prices have skyrocketed -- I paid around $650 for a single season pass this year. Honestly, that's hard to justify for a mountain that hasn't seen major improvements and still falls short compared to other resorts in the region. On top of that, I've heard ongoing complaints about maintenance issues, including bathrooms that don't even function properly. It feels like the focus has shifted away from providing a good experience for loyal customers. This place has so much potential, but the current direction and pricing make it really disappointing. If management showed a little more consideration for their guests, business here could truly thrive again. read more

This place is...how do I put it politely.. the people whom own it do not care about it. Plan and simple. You can tell from the radiators not working and other examples I list. Staff is pretty cool if they're local. From the run down rooms where they simply give you a side heater to keep warm when it's 19 degrees outside. No weather stripping on the doors. Broken door on our first room then they moved us, which I must say I appreciated a lot. They definitely were helpful in that manner. Unfortunately Dealt with loud people until 330-4am. I was pretty frustrated that they shut lift 1 the first hour or two of them operating but yet the lift kept running. When I asked they just said the lift wasn't working. But it was running the whole time things happen. Also sucked that the lifts are supposed to run until 4. At 330they were shutting them down. For the price of the room, idk if I could justify spending money to stay there again. Food was good which was a plus. But might just go elsewhere next time. Tahoes a drive but almost worth it compared to this experience. Giving it two stars STRICTLY for the helpful staff. I would be embarrassed to say I owned that place. read more

Please stay literally anywhere else- I would recommend somewhere in shaver. Amenities- all amenities that were apart of the resort like restaurants that were advertised when you book your stay were closed. No food, convenience stores, or anything on sight. Also no employees to be found so if you need anything you're going to have to drive minimum 20-30 mins to next town. But it won't be easy to figure out where you're going because you'll likely have no cell service because the wifi rarely works. We had to get on the road and then turnout and get navigation going Booking & room- see the image attached of text received hours before checkin. This was only form of communication from the inn. No email confirmation or anything. No response to emails or calls. No AC wasn't a big deal but they should have been transparent about this in booking especially considering this could have ruined someone's stay if they had any sensitivities/ disabilities. The hours included in the text weren't consistent which made us have to change plans. When we arrived/ left it was difficult to find employees making the checkin/ out process annoying and time consuming. As shown in images the restock room was very bare. No one was refilling it and there was way too many people staying for that to be acceptable. Trash was littered and piled all throughout the place. Underneath our bed was empty food bags from previous guest. Everything just felt so gross. The towels and sheets were questionable and had stains. The shower didn't appear to be wiped down. Any higher level (more expensive) rooms are located in a second building that has no wifi. The middle level rooms (private bathroom, but not most expensive) windows are facing the hallway where everyone walks. This is big problem bc with no ac windows must be open at night but the window is directly in front of bed so anyone walking by can see you sleeping. Lowest level rooms (shared bathrooms) have wifi but same situation with windows facing hallway so you have zero privacy. Even the shared bathroom window was pointing into shower so you'll need to shower with swimsuit on. If you have any issues/ complaints you're SOL because you can't find anyone and they will not answer calls. Also Provided mini fridge in our room was barely cold. Definitely wouldn't be able to keep food at a safe temp. Bike park- trails were as expected. Many signs were broken making it a little hard to navigate. Employees who load your bike into hanger take10 mins breaks roughly every hour which is very odd especially considering how little people were at the park. So expect to be standing in line confused as to why you're being ignored. They definitely could have been more careful with loading bikes in and avoiding frame scratches. read more

Man this makes me so sad to say this. I grew up in the area and we come up every year......this year my son grew out of his fear so we decided to rent. We stood in a rental line after we purchased our lift tickets and rentals for my son and just when we got to the front of the line- the person working disappears and another worker told us to go to another line. By the time we got there the line for boots was over an hour long and made a snake like line all the way to the back of locker room. One person working at the front. We arrived at 8:45 am and at 10:45 we were still in the boot line. What an incredibly poor experience. The mountain businesses have always been disorganized and I've always felt like it was part of the charm but this u fortunately was too much. Oh and I forgot to mention we asked if we could just refund the rental and lift ticket for my son and they said no. So we purchased a full day lift ticket and a rental and didn't get on the mountain till 11:30. Lots of money for very poor experience. read more

I started skiing in 2016, and still love spending my weekends at China Peak. I appreciate the fact that it's only an hour and a half from home. Generally, the conditions are pretty good and groomed. When we aren't blessed with powder, the crew usually makes snow and we get to ski into March/April. The drinks and food are pricey, but they're pretty good. I love grabbing a beer and burger at Buckhorn. Always seems to hit the spot . Bunny hills are great, not too steep. When conditions permit, they also have tubing. Facilities are a bit dated, but I think they're working on updating bathrooms. I am hoping that we'll get faster lifts and possibly more chairs. Chair 1 is the main chair that takes you from the base up to the peak and it takes about 15 minutes. When I take academy all the way down it takes about 10 minutes. Most folks do academy, but I also enjoy their terrain park and chair 7! It depends, but they also have a fun half pipe near the Tollhouse run. China peak has good runs for beginners to experts. I've been skiing there for several years and haven't gotten bored of the mountain yet also love the community here! read more

Not sure what I was expecting when we came up but thought from what I had seen on TV it was going to be more than it was. Especially when it came to the main lodge. I don't think it's a place I'd want to be if it's busy. Moving on from the facilities the staff here is very friendly and very helpful. Spent a few hours in the lodge and got to talk with several of them. Beers are cold and mixed drinks are on the weak side. read more

I stayed at the China Peak Inn for a summer outdoor wedding. The pros include a gorgeous landscape, spacious outdoor deck, and great staff. It's also close to Huntington Lake which is a huge bonus. The cons include severely outdated and malfunctioning fundamentals (e.g. hot water in the shower, dirty and worn linens, dilapidated and stinky rooms and facilities), and things you would expect in a hotel room such as a phone to call the front desk. Regardless it was a beautiful wedding and plenty good for those who wanted to crash and sober up the next day--kinda like a frat house. read more

Since new ownership(2023/24) it's been awful. It's so 'corporate' now, that it has lost its family feels. The employees don't seem happy anymore. The owner is not getting the toilets fixed,.. insane price hikes and paying for parking has become out of control. Cars are stuck in the lot because there's no way to get out.... Review #2 Today there was no toilet paper in any of the women's restrooms... generators were down and people were stuck on lifts... The instructor staff is amazing!! The new owners are terrible. The prices for a lift ticket or season pass are outrageous and they no longer offer a discount for season pass renewals. Their parking is also a horror of an experience. They pack everyone in the east lot like fudge, because they have a peak pass parking lot that no one bought. If you have a large SUV or truck, good luck getting out. Overall, this place went to shit with the new dodge ridge ownership group. Update from today: Lifts went down today, shocker. Overpriced. Went snowboarding on 01/06/24 and only two lifts were open and one magic carpet. Tickets were a ridiculously priced for a partially open mountain, $140 per adult. Ski area was very hazardous filled with people who weren't very experienced skiers/snowboarders and areas of the mountain were not groomed and very icy. We also stayed at the inn in a $300+ per night room which was like staying in a hostel. Definitely not worth going again. read more

For a ski resort an hour and some change from Fresno where they regularly plow the roads, making it easy to access when open, I am really grateful to have China Peak at my disposal. No, China Peak isn't like a big California resort, but it's never super crowded, the prices are reasonable (although I agree that lift tickets could be lower, or I wish they had green run only tickets like Badger), and the snow quality is excellent. It's very easy to go up first thing in the morning, ski all day, and be home by sunset. I think by far the best deal China Peak offers is their 3 day beginner package - for $269, you get three lessons with rentals and lift tickets included. After your lesson is done, you can ski the beginner area as much as you want. The instructors are top notch and just so friendly. James P. is the best! Please don't forget to tip these folks. Given staffing constraints, China Peak is only open Thursday - Monday, worth noting when making your weekend plans! Like other ski areas, food prices here are a little much. A lot of folks bring chairs and their own food, I do the same. I caved once and got a fountain drink...it was $4.50. Lesson learned! However, the restaurant/lodge is cute and cozy if you want a drink or some food. It's a nice place to warm up! A lot of the negative reviews I see seem to negate the fact that this is 1) a smaller ski area and 2) you're responsible for your own safety in the mountains. Friends don't teach their friends to ski, they let a professional do it so you're not barreling out of control down the slope, putting people at risk. For beginners, there's a great little moving carpet area if you are uncomfortable getting off the lift. Please take lessons so we can all have fun on the mountain together! In short, if I had a 4WD car I would buy a season pass - next year! I go regularly and I'm happy to have this in my backyard. read more

DEFINITELY NOT A RESORT. Resort prices for MOTEL QUALITY (I've actually stayed at some beautiful motels) Horrible management. I don't know if the owners are aware of this but the Managment seems horrible. It's definitely not a resort, it's a motel with resort prices. Stayed here for the first time this weekend and got woke up at 4:30am by a snow removal machine. I expressed my discomfort to the front desk personal, after telling me that they can't control that, I then added that why would t they at least provide earplugs or let people know at check in that that may happen so we can be prepared? He said they do provide earplugs but I have to ask for them. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW I WAS GOING TO BE WOKEN UP AT 4:30am I asked him "so, you want me to come all the way to the front desk at 4:30am to complain? Also, If you know this May happen, Why don't you provide earplugs at check in? I explain that for $250 that we payed for the night you would at least expect them to be mindful and give you the head up. He then had the ball to tell me "you are getting 2 free lift ticket so you only payed $50 for the hotel, not 250" the ticket where already included on the booking and was agreed on. It was nothing extra He was rude and disrespectful. I seriously would had been happy with a free coffee. They don't care about clients! Also Wifi doesn't work at all (so fase advertisement) the room was dirty! (Found hair on my towels. Coffee maker had not been cleaned. There is no hair driers in the room so bring your own so you don't get sick from having wet hair and going to the snow. Their rental and pick up equipment could be a lot more organized too. The only good thing was the girl waiter at the bar. She was friendly and took good care of us. read more

We visited this ski resort on Sun Jan 1 and had a great experience. All staff were SO friendly and welcoming, really set the tone for having a fun day. Both my kids took lessons which went really well. Even though it was a busy holiday weekend the resort had plenty of instructors so neither class was overcrowded. The instructors were kind, enthusiastic, and capable- both my daughters had lots of fun and learned a lot. The resort is older and not super fancy, but I personally prefer a low-key atmosphere so it fit us fine. The only downside was the number of VERY fast snowboarders and skiers flying down the "academy" green run. Once you leave the moving carpet the next easiest run is "academy" and it felt dangerous for people to race past beginners. I don't think this is the resort's fault, there are plenty of blue and black runs and they posted "slow" signs all along the green run, just something to be aware of if you visit on a busy weekend. We really enjoyed our day and can't wait to return. read more

Indian Pools hiking trail is beautiful all along the creek and waterfalls. Water is so clear , you can see the bottom of the creek. We saw some trouts. Water is freezing cold but, it felt good to dip my feet in . Trail is pretty leveled with some rocky steep areas. Pretty popular trail , we ran into quite a few hikers , some with dogs , kids , sunbathing on top of the rocks. Nice easy hike with pretty views of the water. read more

Always an enjoyable day on the slopes. Slowly getting all my kiddos prepped and ready for the bigger runs. The teaching staff is always amazing and so encouraging to their students. My kids had a blast doing their lessons. My 6 yo learned to ski while my 8 yo tried out snowboarding. I began skiing at the original China Peak when I was 5. Skied through Sierra Summit years and now back to China Peak. Cosmetically, little has changed about this place since the 70's. Very few updates to the lodge, though the lifts have changed. It's a super run down place to be. Went up skiing yesterday and it may have been my last day skiing there. Right now, smack in the midst of the Omicron spread, 500k infections daily, and NO ONE is wearing a mask. No one! Not the lift operators, no one in the restaurant except the three guys behind the plexiglass doing the cooking (good for them!). They have the nerve to put up a sign saying "socially distance (no one was), and wearing a mask indoors in required, outdoors is encouraged". They actually had tape marking on the floor that no one was abiding by. Ridiculous! The worst of our experience was not the lack of Covid safety, but theft! We put a hat, neck gaiter, sweater, and jacket in a locked locker. At the end of the day, we went to retrieve them. We entered the code and opened the locker to find the hat and neck gaiter only. Both the jacket and sweater were gone. We went to speak to someone about it who claimed, "wow, we've never had that happen before!" Really? Someone came out with a master key and opened all the locks and of course, our stolen items were nowhere to be found. Now that I know someone has a master key, I know where our stolen items went. It's disgusting to go on vacation and pay a lot of money for lift tickets to have your things stolen by someone on the inside. There was absolutely no evidence of the lock being broken. I'm out. Time to go to Tahoe. Lack of adherence to Covid protocols, thefts of belongings, nearly getting run over by at least 5 out of control, rude snowboarders, it's not worth it. Save your money and if you do go there, I'd recommend not leaving your belongings anywhere, including your skis or boards while you eat. If they're stealing inexpensive things like sweaters, you can bet they've got their eye on your equipment. read more

Rough weekend. We stayed for New Years and not what I was hoping for. In 3 days and two nights our water shut off a total of 5 times. At first they told us it was because the pipes froze, then later it was that a pipe had burst, then it was that they shut it off but they couldn't tell us why. But there was clearly water being pumped to other parts of the resort because you could literally see and hear fire hoses stretched out across the land doing their thing. The tough part about these shutoffs was that they were not minor, they lasted for hours. In fact, the very first day we showed up at 9am to be informed of this issue and our water was not up and running until 5:30pm. It should have been enough of a red flag but we decided to endure and hope for the best. Bad decision. Woke up not being able to shower or use the toilet on New Years Day. It was not until halfway through the second day they had Portapotties stationed across the mountain. When it was all said and done they offered a refund for one nights stay. It's not nothing but given the severity of the discomfort I would have expected more. No help with lift tickets or dining expenses. Just one night comped. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because the staff was friendly, particularly the ski instructors and the lift operators. All very fun, energetic and beyond helpful. This mountain has a lot of potential. I can't take it out in the people working there. It's clear there has been no money spent on much needed upgrades for several decades. The mountain is small but fun and the beginner hills could use a real chair lift for novices to learn how to load and unload properly before getting thrown to the wolves. Hope to see changes someday. read more

I just had the most profoundly disappointing experience at this resort that I've ever had at any ski resort over my 30 years of skiing. I would even go so far to say this was the worst hotel management interaction from the hundreds of hotels I've stayed at around the world. Mr. Russell Morris was the manager at the time of this incident. Weeks ago I made plans to have a nice ski vacation at China Peak with friends who would be staying in your RV hookups. About 4 days ago, I called this resort and talked to someone (I didn't record the name) and explained I had a small Sprinter van and didn't need hookups but wanted to park in the lot somewhere close to my friends who were paying guests in the RV lot. They mentioned I could just park nearby and there wasn't any charge because I wasn't in need of an RV hookup or spot because my vehicle is a normal size. Once I arrived, I offered to park in front of my friend's RV but the parking lot worker said it was no big deal to park across the road (where I'm currently parked) - so I parked there. I skied all day - it was wonderful - incredible powder. I've spent nearly $250 at the resort, eating, drinking, lift tickets etc. It really was a magical time up until about 10:30PM that night. I had just finished getting ready for bed, was in my underwear, teeth brushed. etc. and a nice security guard came by. He really was a pleasant person and explained that I needed a parking pass. As nice as possible, he explained what he thought were the rules - I told him my situation and told him what I had been previously been told by the staff. He offered that the manager can come out to me and talk to me instead of me having to get redressed to go out in the snow (~10F outside) - I told him that I would really appreciate that. When Mr. Morris came to my van, I explained my story again to him as I explained it to the security guard. Mr. Morris then proceeded to insinuate in an unprofessional and snarky tone that I was lying about my interactions with staff. He then told me that I needed to come to the front desk immediately and check in and pay the fee. I asked him if we could take care of this in the morning and he refused and proceeded to threaten me to calling the sheriff out to I suppose cite me or forcefully move the vehicle. He made it very clear to me that parking there was not my right but a privilege (which I agree whole heartedly btw - it was just very condescending). I then proceeded to get dressed in order to make my way to the opposite end of the resort (1/2 mile away). I was obviously upset but at no time did I use profanity or insult the staff. The interaction could have been 1000% better had Mr. Morris been either more empathic or empowered to do something like: "I'm so sorry this is such a hassle for you. It's normally $60 for an RV spot but I can clearly see you're not hooked up and you're only parked here. Why don't we just take care of this in the morning. Would $20 be ok? Just come by the desk and take care of it then - I'll leave a note for my staff to finish the transaction then. Have a nice night" An interaction like that would make me a lifelong convert as to the quality and charm of China Peak. Instead, I'm agitated that I'm having to write this long, unpleasant review explaining my experience with this resort. Wrote Tim Cohee, the CEO of China Peak and explained the same situation who admitted that they "blew it" but never apologized and refused to actually do anything about it. He also insinuated that my story couldn't possibly be true. I paid $60 in "tuition" to learn about China Peak's CEO Tim Cohee and Manager Russell Morris. Never again China Peak. Warning - NO MASKS WORN! I was so excited to go skiing safely during the pandemic. China Peak's website said they are very strict about masks and social distancing so we thought this would be great! Squaw did a great job so we decided we would give China Peak a try. Unfortunately, their website was a big lie! They did not care at all about the safety of others. Barely any masks were worn, even by employees. Since employees weren't monitoring, we tried to ask someone to put their mask on next to us and they were very rude about it. This is not okay and should be changed immediately. Other than the lack of masks and respect of others, the mountain is a great place to learn and enjoy a nice day out. read more

I have been going to China Peak for 30+ years. It was always a favorite. we are now so dismayed. Yesterday we went for the first time in three years. No running water, no toilets, no bottled water. They told us to pee in the woods. No Porta potty's. This was the second day of a water problem, and they still had no solution. How can you charge $126 for a lift ticket with no facilities to use? last year there was the same issue. Their Facebook and website says groomed to perfection. Nothing was groomed and it is a holiday week. The snow on the runs was heavy and chunky and very hard to ski. A corporation has taken over. They remove all negative posts from Facebook. Don't be fooled. We hope you turn it around fast or you'll be losing lots of faithful patrons.! read more

Summer Bike DH: I have been coming here for over 7 years during the summer season, almost every day they are open. It is the only local lift access to Fresno. This resort will get you the closest experience to trail riding you could ask for. Groomed, flowy trails with jumps don't really exist here. The problem is they don't have staff to take care of the cycling trails, which leaves berms blown out and trails with insane breaking bumps. The trails consist mostly of switchbacks which they say is to "slow people down" which makes for a great experience if your 50 years old. Smooth flowy corners would prevent eroding, and braking bumps but it's hard to get them to understand, so sometimes you just gotta go your own way if you know what I mean. *wink* They treat summer like a red headed stepchild (no offense to red headed step children, sorry), which is odd considering the local climate, and the horrible snow pack of the last several years. They are definitely climate deniers. LoL! I would definitely recommend going, they do have trails for all ages and skills, but down expect any epic runs, just good fun trail riding with a few small natural features, and plenty of extremely technical riding. There is no other park I have been to that has better technical routes than this one. I would love to upgrade this to 5 stars if they would pull their heads from their... and invest some money in summer instead of flushing it down to toilet on winter toys. Have fun with that snowmaking equipment, seems like someone forgot it's not just lack of snow, it's cold air that's also needed. Maybe they forgot they are so close to Fresno which regularly hits 110, this ain't Mammoth boys. Enjoy the summer lift while you can! It sounds like it almost was canceled this year. The China Peak Inn is pretty gross. The plus's are beds are comfortable and the its cheap & convienant if you do the ski & stay special. The staff is friendly. Carpets and bathroom are disgusting. As far as the snow resort goes, the runs are OK . Its not as inexpensive as dodge ridge and not as nice. It wasn't crowded so that made it a little nicer. read more

We had a great time at China Peak over July 5th weekend. Russell and the entire staff made us feel welcome. We ended up taking advantage of their RV parking with electric hookup, all at the base of the lift. We ate dinner at the Inn Saturday night and lunch on the second story patio on Sunday. I took advantage of their bike park, great trails for all skill levels, while my wife and daughter explored the trails and scenery. Definitely would recommend to all as we will be back. read more

China Peak is as good as it gets for the Central Valley. Unfortunately they don't come close to the Northern California resorts, but China Peak is a great place to come if you live in the Central Valley. Being from Fresno, I have been coming to China Peak/Sierra Summit for many, many years and I love coming here because it is so close. It has some decent variety for beginners to advanced, friends and families. China Peak has a lot to offer. I think China Peak needs to make a few of improvements in order for them to compare to some of the other resorts in California. Some of the things may not be feasible, but there are some things that can make a big difference. This would be a costly expense, but it would be nice to see at least one high-speed chair lift. The ride up Chair 1 is just brutal. It takes a long time to get to the top, even longer if they have to stop the lift for any reason. The bottom of Academy is also brutal. The flat part is a nightmare unless you can get some good speed coming down. If you happen to run into boarders/skiers sitting in the middle of the run, it could slow others down and even make them stop. It would be nice to see them make that a slightly steeper grade so people can still ride down without having to take off their boards/skis to walk. The food needs some improvements. Look at the major Tahoe resorts and you'll see a huge difference in the food you can get there than what they serve at China Peak. Frozen hamburgers just doesn't cut it. Either way, China Peak is a good resort and I am glad that I can drive 1.5 hours to get in a day of boarding. More snow will hopefully mean more improvements in the future. Pray for snow!! read more
