Unlike most places in this area, they fry things quite well. The portions are slightly less than what you should be paying for however. I didn't get any white rice, fortune cookies or extras that are standard at almost all other places. If I had gotten the extras I would have considered a 4 star review. read more

Awful customer service... I called a few months ago (yes, I've been slacking on Yelp, *bows head in shame*), and the guy who picked up was rude, impatient, and didn't speak English very well. The food: - Steamed dumplings - edible, but the skin had been overcooked to the point where it is mushy - boneless bbq pork - absolutely awful, it was dry, tough, and tastes like it has been sitting under a heat lamp all day - the fried snow peas are actually not badly made, but I was told that they would charge me an extra $0.50 if I wanted a container full of snow peas instead of a mix of snow peas and broccoli - the pork fried rice that came with the boneless pork... eh, flavorless but not inedible. They dont even know where theyr standing and will straight up ignore customers while they text on theyr phone. If your coming here to pick up food, prepare for a nightmare. Absolutely love this place. I've tried so many different Chinese food places in the Belleville/Bloomfield/Nutley area and their dishes either lacked flavor severely or I would find a dead bug in my food and never return. My mother and I were having a few drinks at Brix down the strip and stopped by for a late bite because THANKFULLY they were open. China Star definitely has the best Chinese food I've ever had. So flavorful and I've never had an issue with them forgetting an item, messing up an order, or finding a creepy crawly. I'm so happy I found this place and the customer service is always great. This place is horrible!!!! They are rude and plain disgusting. We waited over 2 hours for food. Then when we called to ask about the food. They said they delivered it and we were so confused because they didn't. Then they put this young driver on the phone they started yelling at us saying he delivered it to a grandmother and a bunch of kids. Soooo...I've been eating here for quite some time now because the food was better than most Chinese take outs in this area; and because I live very close to it and always order my food for pick up. Tonight: we asked for 1 small order of steamed chicken and string beans and a large order of steamed shrimp and brocolli. I should have known something wasn't right: 7 people were working at the counter (including one Spanisih guy who looked like a tourist in his own backyard); another 2 people were working the stoves; and 0 people bothered to blink the first time I asked for my order. I should have known that if the customer service was this bad, the food wouldn't be that much better tonight. All I can say is: I'm glad I ordered the steamed shrimp and brocolli... because Jimmy just went all Linda Blair with his reenactment of The Exorcist a la chicken and string beans 10 minutes after eating it. Ordered from Grubhub at @630 pm. Was given a window of 715-725 delivery. I called at 730 and was told he couldn't find my order, then put me on hold. When he came back, he found the order and told me it was on the way. I live 5-10 minutes away. At 815 the food finally came, with no apology. Just moved to Belleville and was looking for a local Chinese spot to order from. Came across this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Delivery was fast and it was nice to have someone on the phone taking orders that I didn't have to repeat myself a million times too. The food came fast. Since hubby and I were just moving into the new apartment we didn't have forks. We looking in the bag to make sure there were forks and noticed that there were none. Hubby flagged down the delivery boy and asked where the forks are and his response was "you gotta call them". Hubby asked if he could just bring back forks since the place is literally down the street and he said no because he had 3 other deliveries. Whatever. So I call the joint up and ask if we can get forks. I was informed by the VERY pleasant *insert sarcastic eye roll* gentleman on the phone that they don't give out forks with dinner. I informed him that I wasn't aware of that since I have always gotten forks with my Chinese food whether I order for Dinner, breakfast or any meal in between. He was very argumentative and I was hungry so I told him forget it. Hubster ended up going to a local convenience store and picking up a box of plastic forks. Although the customer service was appalling, I was willing to put that aside because the food was hot and delicious. What I am not able to forgive us getting to the end of my meal and getting ready to put a LONG STRAIGHT HAIR IN MY MOUTH (Neither me or hubby have straight hair). Placed an order at 7:57pm via Uber eats, calls the actually establishment at 7;59-spoke with a male staff and requested there be sauces in the bag like every other normal Chinese restaurant that delivers. He responds yes it's in the bag I'm looking at it now, obviously not possible because of timing so I continue to say so and he then asks for my name and assured me there will be sauce in the bag order gets here NO sauce and more broccoli than chicken and food is cold! read more

I used to like this place. My family stopped going here because they felt they were treated differently due to the color of their skin. The older lady that works there, never likes to give me my correct change. If she owes me a quarter, she'll give me 10 cents instead. The customer service is not the greatest and I've noticed my family was right. I came in to order and waited while the gentleman was taking an order on the phone. He told me to hold on. A Caucasian lady walked in after me. Once he was done with the phone order, he asked the Caucasian lady, 'How May I help you.' She looked at me and I told him I've been standing here for a while and you skipped me??? This is the third time something like this has happened. They treat Blacks differently and it's sad. This was my families go to Chinese restaurant for over 10 years I personally do not care for Chinese, but when we did order it was from here. The past 3 time I ordered there was a problem. Tonight was the 3rd and final time I will ever go there again. I ordered $69.25 in food. After we received it, i realized there was no rice at all. Not the quart of pork fried rice I ordered, nor the white rice that should've come with the 4 other main dishes I ordered. What did it for me was when I called to tell them, I was told "well we are busy now so if you want your rice you have to wait 50 minutes for a delivery or you can come get it!" Unbelievable ...
