This place is near my home. So I've been there often. Every time I go my foods ready early, the containers are stuffed to the brim and I enjoy every bite. Picked up China Star to go for dinner and was not very impressed with the service or food. When we called to place our order, the woman who picked up the phone was in a bad mood from the beginning of our phone interaction with her. We asked her to include fresh duck sauce with our order and she replied and said "get that from our refrigerator when you get here to pick up your food", in a bit rude of a tone. Went to pick up the food and while the pickup process is fairly easy, since we picked up many meals we were hoping they would be labeled regarding what type of food was in each container. Unfortunately no containers were labeled so we had a bit of trouble determining which meal was for which person. The portion sizes were a bit on the smaller side but it was enough food for each of us. One of the good food items was the spare ribs, they were enjoyed by the whole family. Each of the meals was only mediocre. Each dinner combo came with an egg roll and either fried or steamed rice. I personally had the spicy chicken with garlic sauce and did not find the dish spicy at all, and there was not much meat in the meal. The fried rice was a bit on the drier side but it was okay. All in all I don't think we will be returning to this restaurant. read more

Chinese take out. Call it 2.5 stars I believe one other Yelper called it: Port in a storm is an apt description. It is passable, but it is certainly nothing to rush over there for. I decided to give it a shot because I have not had Chinese takeout in a while. Based on the reviews, it seemed like it would be sort of a crap-shoot. The place is small, located towards the rear of a stripmall. I was a little surprised by the Plexiglass window action and the crappy money "drawer" - I haven't seen anything like that since my old days back in Brooklyn. Not sure if it is a crime thing, or a covid thing, but it is just off-putting. The menu is standard fare - a little bit of everything Chinese to keep you interested. I went with egg foo yung as that is always a great yardstick in my opinion, and well, it was just ok. The sauce was trending towards the nasty side - very watery and just "off" in flavor... like as in there was no flavor. Come to think of it, there really was no flavor in the pancakes as well. Service was fine- no sign of the rudeness others have been complaining about. Order took a few minutes to cook so I had a look around while I waited. The store is pretty dirty - like "how does it pass health inspection?" dirty. Prices are in line with the area. All in all, I'd pass on coming back here again. Parking lot available. read more

the quality of the food is outstanding. When order Chinese food I usually order beef and broccoli and end up just eating the broccoli because the beef has a bad texture and is tough to eat. Was in the area for a baseball tournament. Wanted something different and walked in. Greeted very nice, order sweet sour chicken with pork fried rice. Was told 10 minutes as it was being made fresh. Omg... the food was incredible! Very well cooked and prepared. Look at the picture and see yourself! I was a longtime customer of China Star until a few months when new owners took over. Before they did, the food was always freshly made, piping hot (not to mention very spicy in some cases, which I loved), and their kung pao chicken, mongolian beef and comb fried rice were particular favorites of mine. Because of my schedule working nights chained to a desk, I frequently had to order something for dinner, and China Star was my go-to place. When the new owners took over, they must have changed how all the menu items were prepared because when I ordered kung pao chicken one night, I was surprised to see the chicken was breaded (I've never seen it breaded at any Chinese restaurant I've ever been to). Also, the sauce wasn't even the least bit spicy. Anyone who eats kung pao regularly knows it is SPICY, which is why I love it so much, and the spicier the better. Before the new owners, I'd finish the entire order in no time, but this new order I got, I could only manage a couple bites before I actually started getting nauseous, so I tossed it in the trash. Figuring it was a one-off fluke, I ordered it again a week later. Same thing. I decided right there and then I was taking my business elsewhere, since there's a lot of other really good Chinese places around here I liked, but China Star was son convenient because it was barely a block away. read more

I ordered a Lunch special (Sweet and Sour Shrimp). The wait was reasonable but the food was not worth the $$$ I paid. The Shrimp was ALL BREADED Flour... I peeled the bread off of the shrimp and found a piece of what supposed to be shrimp. I'm very disappointed. The rice was ok but I didn't pay $$$ for a plate of hard rice. Unfortunately, after being loyal customers for several years, this place changed for the worse. Food wasn't always cooked properly, prices went up and the quality was not good. A lot of items seemed over seasoned vs previous years and, even as a take out place, it didn't appear to be in very good condition when we went in to pick up our orders. As a result, we no longer order from China Star. I do hope that they improve and correct these issues. read more

Excellent Asian fusion. Lots of great flavor, not one bland dish. So many "Asian fusion" restaurants are neither Asian or fusion. They are usually just mediocre dishes that are unremarkable. These dishes have taste, flavor and everything was cooked perfectly. Shrimp was plump and juicy, the beef was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and all the vegetables were cooked crisp tender. The garlic sauce was actually garlicky but with subtle flavors or ginger and lemongrass.. I recommend this place highly! read more

I stopped in for the lunch menu, and it was just before noon. There was a four year old, sitting at the counter on an electronic device with a runny nose and coughing all over the counter. He wiped his nose with his fingers and smeared it on the counter, I told the woman, and she grabbed a napkin to wipe his nose and another woman from the kitchen came out and wiped his nose and went back into work and neither one of the women washed their hands or wiped the counter down. Had I not already paid for my lunch, I would have walked out, these people have no hygiene. I tried to call the health department in Palm Beach County, and it was a dead end. I found this hidden gem tucked away in a random strip mall near my work. I was looking for a Chinese place, and this was what I found. My initial reaction was that it was gonna be super generic and nothing to write home about. Heck, even the name was generic; there was actually a mediocre Chinese restaurant named China Star in my old town of Bloomington/Normal, IL. My expectations were not very high. I was pleased to see that they offered small/large options for vegetable dishes. This is something I very much appreciate, because if I'm just coming in for lunch, I don't want a large order of vegetables; a small order is enough for just me. I also inquired about their Hot and Sour Soup to see if it could be made vegetarian without meat. The guy working there informed me that it was ALWAYS vegetarian. Another plus. In the end, I settled on the Hot and Sour Soup and Bean Curd (tofu) Szechuan Style. My meal cost $9, which I feel is quite fair for the food I was given. The guy taking my order also asked whether I wanted my food "extra spicy" or not. I told him extra spicy was fine. I sat down, and my soup arrived within 3 minutes, while my tofu/vegetables arrived shortly after. Good service. Now let's talk about the food itself. The Hot and Sour Soup was the best I've had in awhile. Probably the best I've had since I've lived in FL. It was bold, flavorful and it had all the necessary goodies. It had a slight kick to it and just overall good flavor. Just like a Hot and Sour Soup should be. Was it the best I've ever had? No, but it was a very strong contender. That's all I ask for. A job well done. The tofu dish was also quite good. The vegetables were cooked perfectly. The tofu was outstanding; it was crispy without being overcooked, probably some of the best tofu I've ever had. And guess what? The dish was actually spicy! Not overpowering or anything, but it was, get this, the perfect level of spicy! It left a slight burn in my mouth without being bothersome. This might sound overdramatic, but this dish was flawless. Delicious. Oh, and before I forget, let me just say that the rice was cooked PERFECTLY. It was some of the best rice I've had at a Chinese restaurant. It paired well with my dish, it was sticky, and it was cooked to perfection. I might have a small sample size of only one visit, but China Star knows how to cook their rice. This is critical for any Chinese restaurant, and China Star fully delivered. By the way, the portions were very nice. I left feeling full and satisfied, without feeling bloated or disgusting. I paid $9 for this meal. I think that is very fair. I left feeling as though I had gotten my money's worth. So, let's recap. Nice vegetarian options. Quick service. Food that is well-executed and tasty. Good portion sizes. Fair prices. Yup, that's a 5 star rating in my book. Look, I'm not gonna say that China Star is some super-authentic, amazing restaurant that you absolutely need to visit ASAP. But for what it is, China Star is a great place.
