We ordered the Orange Chicken Combination and Three Ingredient meal. First was the Wonton soup, delicious and simple as it should be...Then, the combination came with three pieces of appetizers- a cream cheese rangoon, fried shrimp tail and egg roll. The Rangoon was great, I would order those alone. The Orange Chicken was delicious, lightly battered so you know there is actually meat and not just fried dough! It came with ham fried rice- not much to say about it, plain. The Three Ingredient was soo good, alittle spicy so be warned. It had shirmp, chicken and beef and is served with white rice. Seriously, this plate was so delicious, I will be back for this one on its own. There is an extensive Sushi menu but they have a sign on the door NO SUSHI... so that was alittle disappointing. Sort of the experience I had expected to have here. I had previously ordered takeout and though it wasn't bad it wasn't anything special. I decided to wait for a review until I dined inside. Everything was just about the same as it was before though a bit fresher than the takeout was. The highlight of the meal was the hot and sour soup which was really quite good. As mentioned in the subtitle to my picture of the wontons, I love when Chinese restaurants provide this nicety, almost all Mexican places offer chips and salsa why not all Chinese places? These were just okay however, their sweet and sour sauce is a bit heavy on the Chinese 5 spice for my taste, and the wontons themselves did not taste fresh, and had taken on a flavor from something else fried with them. The fried rice was the saddest part of the whole experience and was essentially rice mixed with too much soy sauce and a bit of ham, I think there were a few specs of egg in there but I can't be certain. The egg rolls were simple yet fairly tasty, the fantail shrimp was decent but well over-battered. For my entree item I had chosen the orange peel chicken, and though I typically prefer a lighter more fresh orange flavor, theirs, which is a darker, sweet-savory garlic sauce with a mild orange flavor, was exactly what I was in the mood for on this particular day. It was well cooked, a good balance of sauce-batter-meat and pretty delightful all around. The staff was friendly and my server, who was the only one, was impressively managing the 6-7 tables that were seated. My drink was always full, and I never felt unattended to. Overall I was fairly happy with my visit though I am currently nursing a bit of a soar stomach and an occasional feeling of nausea for about the past 5 hours since my meal. Sort of an overfull, over sweet, and over MSG sort of feeling. I would likely go here again, and if the service continues the way it was today I may even overlook the bad rice and mediocre food (for the most part) and give them a slightly higher rating. In truth I would have gone for a 3.5 but don't feel like rounding up in this case. read more

I ordered take out last night for my birthday and was just disappointed. The ham fried rice had no vegetables in it. Neither did the sweet and sour chicken. Ick. I had been here years ago and it was really good. My husband and I went tonight and were totally disgusted. Everything tasted slightly of cleaner from the wonton chip appetizer to the soup to the entrees. My husband ordered the orange chicken, his chicken was extremely chewy and he chomped on something hard and crunchy (best case scenario: maybe a tendon or something from the chicken?), I ordered the sesame chicken and it again had a weird after taste like cleaner or bleach or something. We ate hardly anything, the staff was clueless, and although the portions were generous, I felt the poor quality was overpriced. We usually go to Joy Luck down the street...definitely will be sticking with that from now on. read more

I enjoyed the cuisine here. The waiter was a little difficult to understand, but she was foreign and I expected it eating at an ethnic joint. The menu was confusing partly because it was foreign, and I have limited experience w/Asian Food. The waiter kindly directed us to the combo portion of the menu, it seemed to be the best deal and least confusing part of the menu. I selected the sesame chicken, which I believe was around 9$. Very good value, and extremely equitable for the price. The food was surprisingly good, my other experiences with Chinese vendors hasn't been amazing (mostly chicken that you'd think was hit by a bus, left out for a good one or two years, and then dipped in silly putty) so it was a pleasant surprise. The Sesame Chicken didn't have many seeds, which was disappointing but didn't dull the meal all too much. The fried rice was cooked well. The meal included a Crab Rangoon, Battered Shrimp, and an Eggroll. Both were good, excluding the eggroll which wasn't an essential part anyway. I'd definitely go here again. read more

I'll give them an A for quality, service, cleanliness and portions. We ordered the combination B, and selected the garlic chicken and sesame chicken. Out hot and sour soup did not disappoint. The consistency and flavor was on point, followed by the appetizers which consisted of a delicious tin wrapped chicken (I should have ordered extra to go, yumm) and a cream cheese and green onion wonton and eggroll. We have gone here a lot because the food is consistently good. I have a tried something different almost every time and it is always good. Portion size is great and you should never leave hungry. I have had two very different experiences with China Star. The first was through DoorDash Food Delivery. After paying $70+ for two entrees, soup, and fried rice, I was underwhemed and convinced that it was over-priced and poor quality. The second visit was much different. We found ourselves searching for open restaurants on Christmas this year. Being a lifelong fan of "A Christmas Story", I had a hunch that our best bet was a local Chinese restaurant and sure enough, China Star fit the bill. Not only were they open on a snowy Christmas night, they were inundated with a steady stream of business. We placed our order to-go and waited patiently in the lobby enjoying some NBA basketball on the TV and watching the giant koi fish. Our order was again two entrees, fried rice, and soup. However, we added some cream cheese wantons as an impulse buy. Our food was ready in about 20 mins and this time the price was just over $40. The food was exponentially better the second time around as well. For our first DoorDash order we had chicken and vegetables and General Tso's chicken for our two entrees. The chicken used in both dishes was tough and overly slimy. This time we went with sesame chicken and good old sweet & sour chicken. The chicken in these entrees was much different, slightly breaded and cooked to perfection. Obviously we made the wrong choices the first time around. The wantons turned out to be a good impulse decision as well. We are looking forward to our next Chinese take-out night at China Star. read more

I ate here with my daughter on Sunday. We for the walnut shrimp & cream cheese wontons. I spent all day Monday & Tuesday with horrible food poising. I had to go to my doctor where she asked me what I had eaten. When I was eating the shrimp I could tell something was just off, it was room temperature like it hadn't been freshly cooked, & it just tasted not right. I wasn't sure if it was the food or not until my grandma accidentally ate my leftovers I forgot to toss and she got violently ill as well. I will never eat here again and hope others try to avoid this place as well. My doctor also advised me to contact the health department so that's my next step. read more

They have the best egg drop soup that we've ever had and there service is always fantastic. Not very impressed with the food or the decor. The food was salty and seemed old and reheated. The decor was confusing in the main dining room with Christmas lights draped around the room and pictures that seemed out of place. Used to know the owners. What happened??? We had a seasoned waitress that treated us indifferent instead of friendly . The only one that even gave us a smile was a young man refilling waters. The service was slow. The food quality has gone down while the price went up. Everything seemed to have a deep fried quality. Even the Thai food we used to adore has changed the recipe to reflect just plain Chinese food without any distinctive Thai flavor. The rest of the family reminded us that there was a very good reason why haven't returned for a while and we found out why. Went there tonight and will never go back. What a joke. It took 45 to even get our soup and we had to ask the busboy for it. The waitress had no idea who was seated first and took our order after taking two other orders that came in way after us. Even after she knew we were upset over waiting so long, she brought our food after one hour, with no apology. Never saw her again and was shorted on my order. We had to go to the cashier to get our check. It was only two of us. This is the first time in my entire life I didn't leave a tip! The food here is top notch. We've been eating here for about 5 years now. It is run by actual immigrants, be sure to check out the coy tank (as in too many fish but they are huge!) and the article on the West wall waiting area about their move to Utah. My wife decided to try the new China star in Ogden that Huang just opened, due to an article in the Go, of the Ogden Standard paper. The article in the go raved about how good the food is, that they offer a full salad bar, and buy one get one free. When we arrived at about 5PM, the day the article came out, there was literally no one in the parking lot. There was what appeared to be one person at the counter, and one server. Shortly after, mobs of people showed up with absolutely not enough personnel to serve the patrons. Luckily, the general manager, Deseray Pisotchi, showed up and tried to put things into order. It appears the owner, Huang, failed to notify the rest of the staff about the article coming out in the Go, and also failed to let them know he had ripped out the salad bar. Maybe Huang should have crawled out from the kitchen to try and explain to all the angry patrons, why no salad bar, and why so short staffed. Definitely a lapse in sound management. The food was good, after the long delay to get it. The General Manager, Deseray, was a delight. Huang should ensure he takes good care of her, or his business won't be around for long with these sorts of major oversights!! read more
