I came here with a group of girl friends. If you have 5 or more people they will give you a group discount and seating in the back if wanted. Great for private parties. They were also running a buy one get one half off special which was a great deal! I painted a vase and a butter tray with lid. I think total I spent $40-45 which I added speciality paint. It was well worth it, fun activity where you keep your work of art! It takes about a week to get your pieces back. The speciality paint is well worth the $1 extra per paint. The pottery is under new ownership and I really had a great time painting pottery with my kids. Some pieces cost more, but I painted some little pieces for around 10 dollars. Their pottery is more unusual and the results are stunning. We painted a plate, a tile and some Halloween decorations and it was a good enough price. I decided to take my friend in for a girls day and I'm so happy we did! We went in, picked what we wanted to do, then selected the colors we wanted to use. Once we were seated we started to paint. I ran out of the main color and the gentleman came right over and gave me more. We ended up staying almost an hour after they closed, but he didn't mind one bit. He told us to take our time, and that he didn't mind. mom so glad we went, we are already planning another trip in! They have so many things to choose from to paint, and so many colors to choose from as well. read more

So my kids go to paint today and have masks on (obviously there's a pandemic!) they were the only people in the store with masks. Granted they are kids and were with their grandparents so I sent them with masks for public encounters. The woman behind the counter acted offended and said "when u sit down you can take off your masks" wth ummm no they are children we are in a pandemic and it's their right to wear a mask. Just because they were the only two people in the store wearing a mask doesn't mean u should shame them. Unbelievable! read more

So, I bought a gift certificate to the store from the Art Spectacular at Washington Park in September. SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS. I finally get to the store 6 weeks later. I buy a bowl with my certificate, pay the tax on it with cash, get my receipt and head out the door. All of a sudden, OOPS there's a problem. Turns out the number on my GC had already been used. So the guy freaks out, accuses me of (I guess) forging the GC or photocopying it. After I've wandered around the shop for 10 minutes chatting and all friendly, now I'm an evil thief. I offer to leave my phone number thinking he'll eventually figure out the problem, knowing it must be the store's bad paperwork because I know I have a legitimate Gift Certificate. THE OWNER CALLS THE COPS ON ME. REALLY. FOR A $10 BOWL THAT I HONESTLY BOUGHT. He follows me out as I put the bowl in my car and takes photos of my license plate. I arrive home and before I even get my stuff out of my car a cop pulls up behind me in my driveway and asks if I've just gotten home from shopping. I say YES and do you want to see my receipt. NOPE because all John the owner says when he called the police is a lady STOLE A $10 bowl. Nothing about my gift certificate. So he LIED. IN my mind, I did nothing wrong in all of this, and here this guy, the owner, not only accuses me of being a crook, he's the one who lies to the police and sends them to my home. The police officer tells me I have two choices, return to the store and pay MORE $ for the bowl, or go to jail. Really. So during this driveway conversation after 10 minutes or so, his radio says that the store has RESOLVED the issue. So they found they had made some sort of error. That's it. The cop says, (now he's all friendly), well I'd never go back to that store if that's how they treat their customers. Yeah thanks for the advice. I try to support LOCAL, and small businesses, but I will NEVER RETURN to this store. I'm not sure I'll even be able to drive close to it without panicking. read more

While I have really tried to support this place, I just can't do it anymore. With the exception of one staff member, the owners are rude and the customer service is lacking. My kids love the concept of this place so we have been here several times. I spend at least $50-$70 each time we go and it always seems to be an imposition to get someone to set us up and then continue to bring us paints as we need them. On top of this, the last time I went with my kids, I learned they had thrown away our pieces we had been working on since we had not returned within 30 days - yet they had been closed down - as had the rest of the city due to the pandemic. When I expressed my dissapointment in this, I was given basically a shrug and they asked me what I had expected them to do. I asked them if they contacted people before they threw essentially $50 of people's money away. I was told no. We then had a very unpleasant exchange on how it was my fault they didn't contact me and at one point one of the owners walked away from me mid conversation. For the sake of my kids and to get the awkward situation over with, I apologized for getting upset and expressed I just wanted to move on and enjoy the night painting with my kids. We spent over 100$ on new pieces to paint and never received an apology in return for throwing our pieces away or for the rude exchange. To their credit though, I did find out at the end of the night I did get to paint for the price of a child rather than an adult, this saved me 3$. read more

Seriously, stay away. They are extremely expensive and are really stingy about the paint. It seems to be owned by a very rigid couple - who believe customer service should only flow their way. I watched them have an argument with someone from across the room (Rather then going up to the lady and talking about it quietly in the back) which made the (few) remaining people in the store really uncomfortable. They also acknowledged that since they were closed for a time during COVID, and didn't make a practice of taking phone numbers, it was their right to throw away any pieces not picked up (during their closed, COVID time.) You could see the kids were upset, and it makes sense that after dropping 50plus bucks for some cheap ceramics painted by your kids, you expect them to be there after they reopen - but at China Towne. When the lady apologized for getting upset, the owners acted as if it was their due - I have really never seen anything like this before. Interestingly, the owners also brought up calling the cops on a lady who stole a $10 bowl - which I thought was weird, and now, wonder if it was a threat having read the review below. These two people should just paint with their friends, charge them astronomical prices for a club fee, and forget about serving the public. They have no clue what they are doing and really should not be in business. read more
