My other half discovered this place about three months ago because there was a sign about "Harrisburg's Best 2013" in the window. I've noticed it before but thought it was a sad location with nobody eating inside. Instead, turns out, they do a great take-out business. We've ordered about 10-12 times in the past three months and each time the food has been delicious, ready when promised and the orders accurately filled. I called to place an order and lady that answered the phone was very rude taking the order and was rushing me with "we are busy so please hurry up" I places the order because I had no other choice. The delivered my food 1 hr and 23 minutes later. She was even rude when I called and asked for the food. The hunan chicken was alright but the egg rolls were tiny with a small amount of cabbage and lots of grease. I also didn't care for the big chunks of pork in the fried rice. as a general rule i love takeaway from Chinese restaurants. i had driven by China Wok many times as i work in the same plaza, but i'd never stopped. commenting on being hungry one night, a co-worker convinced me to stop in. it was a few days later and out of sheer despiration that i did so. i phoned my order in as traffic was bad and i wasn't really in the mood to wait about and make small talk. even though they clearly told me ten minutes on the phone, my order was not ready for an additional twenty. when i got to the restaurant, it was by no means busy. the place itself is very small and unimpressive. the floor space - what little there is - is overrun by tables, a beverage cooler, two-liter bottles and other drinks not in the cooler, and a dividing wall. in the middle of the room is a table with assorted condiments and utensils out for the taking - forks, spoons, soy, duck, hot mustard - but no chopsticks. i also didn't see napkins, but there were menus. the food itself was good, but nothing to really rave about. i got an order of fried dumplings for a friend - i'm not fond of the "one size" mentality, but he didn't complain about having what would be considered a large everywhere else. my sesame shrimp was okay. it was too much breading and not enough shrimp for my taste. it did include broccoli, but it was more as a garnish as it was completely raw and just added as a barrier between the shrimp and the container. China Wok uses recyclable plastic containers which appealed to my inner tree-hugging hippie, but it's sad to say that was probably the highlight of the meal. i may end up there again out of convenience more than desire. more likely, i'll save my money and go to Isaac's instead. read more

I was eating dumplings and they did taste good but the problem was that I woke up at 4 due to the cause of stomach pain and it just kept happening and I just went to the bathroom and just thought oh maybe I just had to go to the bathroom but I kept feeling the pain as I had earlier and constantly had to go to the bathroom until I realized I had food poisoning. read more

Best Chinese food we've ever had. Seriously. The Gen Tsos shrimp had big, tender shrimp, not over breaded. My wife's vegetarian dish was enough for two days, and cooked perfectly, with fresh veggies. They obviously care about the food. This was better Chinese food than in several china town "authentic" restaurants I've been to in numerous cities. Really glad we found this place. read more

First visit. Ordered combination platter #15 - Szechuan Shrimp comes with pork fried rice and pork eggroll for total of $8 with tax. Absolutely delicious. Shrimp and vegs in a sweet-sour tomato base that was mildly spicy. Even though my order was ready in 10 minutes, everything tasted freshly made, even the eggroll crispy and tasty. (So many times you know that eggroll has been sitting around or was frozen and then fried and there's no flavor.) I'm definitely going back and I'm spreading the word this is a great place for Chinese. read more

OK...my family and I eat Chinese or Japanese food about once a week. We are from a large city, so there are 100's of options for Asian food, from "bad" to "amazing". Maybe that's a factor but I can't see how China Wok is getting all 5 stars reviews. The food is "good" but, 1 quart of beef with broccoli or chicken with vegetables or whatever is basically one quart of the dish INCLUDING the white rice, not one quart of what you ordered. This is NOT how they do it where I come from, nor anywhere I have ever visited, including in the UK. You get a pint or quart of what you ordered PLUS a container or two of rice on the side. Not only that, but the amount of meat in the dish is very scant - I mean about 1/5 of what I'm used to. The vegetables were good, but again, you don't that much b/c 2/3'd of the container is filled up with the rice. But the prices are the same as what I'm used to, so if you do the math, you're paying the same amount for about 1/3 of the food you ordered. Also - scant on the flavor, but heavy on the oil, for a bad combination.My kids asked, "why is the beef fried rice yellow?!" I've had everything from dark brown to very light brown, but never yellow, and again the lack of flavor, but plenty "oily". So not bad, but not 5 stars by any measure. I am sincerely hoping that China Wok isn't getting these great reviews b/c everything else around here is terrible. I'll revisit this review if that's the case. read more

Very small minimalistic not great for eating there but for take out its great. Price average but food quality is excellent and portions are above average. I've eaten there around 5 times and never had a bad meal. Had orange chicken tonight with pork fried rice, very good. The chicken actually had a nice orange taste instead of that mediocre orange tasting sauce I've had at other Chinese establishments. Was able to only finish half, looks like I will have some tasty food later tonight. read more

this is not a nice sit down and eat establishment. this is a take out place. i have been getting chinese take out there for several years now and never had a bad meal. the prices are reasonable and the portions are large. if you ignore the small, cramped, less than stellar decor of the place and get your food to go, you will enjoy it a lot more. read more

We ordered @ 6:40pm for delivery, I had read a bad review on another site, but it was only 1 review. The gentleman that answered was hurriedly pleasent, but while I tried to order , I think he was polishing up on his mind-reading skills, cuz he kept interupting w/ suggestions, I quess. So, after I ordered, Gen. Tao's chicken and shrimp & lobster sauce w/ kinda' Hot & sour soup and good, big but skimpy on the filling crab rangoon. He then tells me, the delivery girl doesn't come in til 7pm (it was 6:43pm) I said O.kay good u can make it & she can bring it when she gets in. He says, like he didn't hear or care, 7:15pm, the # and $ Thank You, Good Nitye, click.....I call back, China Wok, canIHelp you? I said, " We just called and gave an ordered, U need my address?" Yes, give me....OK, GoodniteClick. It arrived @ 7:15 no joke! Dinner was good though, except my hubby didn't get Gen Tao's, may have been bourbon chicken w/ teryaki, but there were ZERO spice @ all, and I HATE anything kinda spicy, and this was in some mild sweet sauce. Not a clue what it was. When in a hurry, they are close, be specific, make him repeat what you said, SO, Good LUCK! Sucks when you get that "Gotta HAVE IT" chinese food urge! read more

This is hands down the best Chinese-American food in the city. There are few things better than a hot plate of China Wok in front of you. I've been a regular customer for going-on seventeen years. The folks there know me and have always been friendly. I haven't tried many dishes there because, frankly, the chicken and broccoli is out of this darned world. Try it and see. (The Kung Pao chicken is also excellent.) You'll also notice that their pork fried rice is full of large pork chunks, tasty with a hint of brown sugar (!). I don't know what the other reviewer was on about, getting not enough meat in her shrimp. Try any other take-out Chinese place in the city and you'll be lucky to get three pieces of meat in your dish. I've almost always gone for lunch and it's a rare day that they don't serve me in five minutes. Also, I've noticed that other so-called China Woks around here don't measure up. The one on the east shore let me down enough that I stopped going (burnt chicken, dodgy taste, etc.).. That's NEVER happened with the real one on the west shore, and we're talking hundreds of meals eaten. Heck, I'd place an order now if it wasn't midnight... just thinking about it is making me hungry. Don't be put off by the humble look of the place -- that's just to keep out the riffraff -- ensuring that it remains the best kept Asian food secret in the midstate (oops -- did I say that out loud?). read more
