Great local grocer: parking is usually available out front or nearby. Wonderful place to pick up lunch and other treats. Their falafel pita sandwich is TDF - warm wheat pita pocket stuffed with moist bits of falafel, hummus and chunks of fresh tomato and cucumber with small bits of spring onion. It takes only 15 minutes of slogging up the steep steep Potrero hill to reach my lunchtime favorite Chiotras. Friendly folks, fair prices, a unique variety of homemade sandwiches including roast turkey off the whole bird!!! and a rocking variety of gourmet conveniences make Chiotras my go-to lunchtime destination. If it's sunny and you have time for a long-ish lunch there's a park nearby to pic-a-nic. Panoramic views on the way back remind me how freaky deaky lucky I am to live in San Francisco. read more

I particularly like the empanadas and breakfast burritos and my husband likes the sandwiches and espresso. I'm reviewing Chiotras as a neighborhood grocery store that also serves coffee and pastries. I haven't tried the deli sandwiches yet, but judging from the other review here, I might have to tack on a star after doing so! As a local grocery it's fine, but you're not going to confuse it with Bi-Rite Market. To be fair, it's smaller and located on a residential street. It serves the purpose of providing essentials for folks within walking distance. The other markets within a short walk are all of the slightly scary variety; Chiotras is decidedly non-scary. They carry a good selection of the essentials. There generally aren't options, but it's a good call to have one each of a variety of merchandise than to offer 10 varieties of butter in the limited space. Prices are higher than in a super market, but quite fair for a convenience store / corner shop. The pastries on offer are good. Not great, but much better than at similar stores. The espresso doesn't measure up to high SF standards. All the folks there are super friendly which makes it a nice neighborly place to visit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update. Wow, their sandwiches were simple, yet delicious! They have a simple menu: choose the type of bread, choose, the meat (or vegetarian filling), and choose the add-ins for extra money. This includes cheese and some fancier dressings. I opted for a prosciutto sandwich with pesto and mozzarella on a ciabatta bun + all of the free fix'ins (lettuce, tomato, red onions, pickles, peppercinis...which was a really nice touch! ). The bread is really fresh, and the ciabatta has a wonderful crisp to the outside, but stays soft and fluffy on the inside. I also shared a side of the hummus. It was nice and smooth, although a bit on the runny side. I was told that they make the hummus there. I think that perhaps they might have added a little bit too much EVOO in this batch, which resulted in it being on the runnier side. However, it was still very good. It looks like some of the shelf products are on the pricier side, but that's to be expected for a smaller grocer. Be warned that it does take them a while to make the sandwiches. Everything is made there to order, and it seems like they really do take their time with making them, such as slicing the meat and cheese to order. read more

This place has all you could ever want from a local grocery. It is conveniently located on the halfway point of the route I take when walking the dog. The owner is a former dog walker and always makes a big fuss of our little puppy giving her a little treat so of course now whenever I walk past this place, even when it is closed, my dog stops dead in her tracks expecting to get fussed over. They have a great selection of essentials as well as a nice line up of more indulgent treats and their prices aren't crazy! Extra points go to the regular appearance of glass bottles full of Mexican Coca-Cola which often serves as a welcome mid-walk refreshment. I've had the odd sandwich here and they never disappoint. Their breakfast bagel in particular is worth trying. read more

Want to find a babysitter, dogwalker, wondering what the commotion is all about on 20th and Arkansas -- Beth will hook you up. Sandwiches and home made soup are GREAT. They carry the type of inventory you would only expect at a high end, uber-expensive grocery (the kind where the people working there give you a dirty look if you don't bring your own bag/only buy organic/etc), and at reasonable prices. Chiotras Grocery is one of those little hidden gems that probably looks too sketchy from the street to ever lure you in, but once someone takes you there you are hooked. I used to get off the bus here on my way home from school everyday in high school and never thought twice about going in, that was until a neighborhood friend introduced me to their sandwiches. Who knew there was such delicious sandwiches hiding within what appeared to be a small neighborhood grocery store. I have kept coming back here even now that I no longer live in the neighborhood for the sandwiches and getting to relax on their back patio, it is a nook of peacefulness that is sorely lacking from my everyday life. As far as it's grocery goes, they stock of a lot unique and high end items (no unknown generic brands here). I especially like their large selection of beverages and European candy. read more

What makes Chiotras so good? Is it the killer sandwiches? The honestly good and friendly owners? Maybe the awesome patio? Whatever the secret, it works out well for Chiotras and has me hooked. There's a good selection of general groceries and everything is priced as you'd expect for a corner store. but the real draw of this place is the sandwiches. The meatball sandwich is my favorite with the prosciutto a close second. As a few other people mentioned, they do charge for some toppings, but it's always worth it. The place can get busy quickly, so if you're in a hurry you should probably order ahead. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely treat yourself and grab a beer and sandwich and enjoy the awesome back patio! read more

We went to Chiotras Grocery after yelping for sandwiches and found this cute little neighborhood deli/specialty grocery store. The ciabatta bread (which to me is one of the most important parts of a good sandwich) was really good - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The sandwhich itself was large and reasonably priced at $5.99 for a regular turkey. Depending on what type of meat you get the price ranges from $5.99 - $7.99. We also ordered a large hot chocolate ($2.25) and it was delicious! That true bitter chocolate taste of homemade cocoa. read more

I wake up most weekends craving a Chiotras meatball sandwich. I always like the sandwiches but the meatball sandwich has a special place in my heart. Someone once stopped me on the street to ask me where my sandwich was from because yes it looks that good. It tastes that good to. This is also a good spot to pick up odds and ends when you don't want to go to a full grocery store. Eggs, pasta, etc. The people who run it are always very nice, and even let me open a tab one day when I locked my wallet in the house that I was locked out of. It took them over 20 minutes to get us our sandwiches, and it wasn't crowded. Had they warned us it would take that long, we would have gone elsewhere. Seriously obnoxious how long that took considering how empty it was and how we had places we had to be. Edit: They did end up comping our soft drinks, so +1 star for that, but upon eating the sandwiches later, they messed up the order, so -1 for that. Update: I go here frequently. If I worked at General Hospital I would walk up Kansas street steps and go grab a sandwich for lunch. Just had their special sandwich (YUM) tonight and thought I'd check out their reviews. No doubt it continues to be an excellent deli. As for reviews mentioning prices, ummm gotta pay rent somehow people. Let's help them stay in business. This is a neighborhood gem and the sandwiches/bites are so worth it!! The best tuna melt, not just saying that because it's in my hood, but it's a hearty/tasty/delicious tuna salad perfect with melted cheese on a perfectly soft/crispy ciabatta! It's hard to find a good tuna melt that is heated/melted all the the all through. It's not explicitly on the menu and I had to ask for it "extra hot" as I always do, but this one is the best I have had! Cute little back patio to enjoy samdwiches too. read more

I could write about what a wonderful neighborhood store this has always been and, if the owners, Beth and Ramsey, have it their way, always will be...and how great and convenient the food and service is...but I need to say something much more important: I miss Blue. Sweet Blue, the "store dog" who was always outside lazing around, waiting to be petted and treated, left us recently, and now there's a hole in my heart and on the sidewalk in front. Blue was so sweet and he represented what we are missing today in so many ways - old-fashioned traditions to counteract all of the wonderful-but-sometimes-overwhelming progress in the world today. The corner store with the dog and the owners who know you and your name are few and far between. I feel so lucky to have bought a home on Rhode Island Street, where one of these still exists. Beth, Ramsey and Ali are committed to a genuine community experience. And Blue was a big part of that, at least for me. He will be so missed. We live down the street from this little gem and couldn't be happier that it's opened. We find ourselves here at least 3 times a week... once during the week for our oops-I-forgot recipe ingredients, Saturday afternoons for a hearty sandwich and homemade hummus, and Sunday morning for fresh pastries and OJ. The owners are locals with strong family ties to the hill (I am ALWAYS a fan of supporting local business), and they have established a stellar lineup of staples since they opened. Their store now offers all our favorite things: Ritter chocolate, Kettle Chips, Tasty Bite packaged foods... and more. The pulled pork sandwich (special) is out of this world. I've had a sandwich from Ramsey before and thought that was hard to beat. But today he suggested I try the pulled pork sandwich with slaw. It was beyond delicious and among the top 3 sandwiches I had on my life - if not even number 1. As desert, I had a pecan bar (not sure if they made it themselves but I'm pretty sure they do) and it was amazing as well. The pecan bar was fresh, delicious and just the right size. The dough was just right not too dry and certainly not soggy. It's really hard to describe but it was just right. If you're nearby or want to try something new, I recommend paying Ramsey and his wife a visit! read more

Great small neighborhood grocery! Moved to Potrero Hill over a year ago and live 1 block from Chiotras, I am an every-day customer. The owners are fantastic people, couldn't be friendlier, and through some rough financial times they have helped me out by letting me pay for items later in the week. AWESOME sandwiches! Get there before 2-3 or so if you want a good selection of meats/cheeses and the delicious Ciabatta bread, it goes quickly. Personal favorite is the Garlic-Rosemary turkey with Smoked Gouda on the Ciabatta, with all the fixins, toasted. $7.99. It's also always good to call ahead and place your sandwich orders, as sometimes it can take a while if there are other customers getting deli items. I usually get my sandwiches to go, but they do have a couple small tables out front and a small patio out back. All the basic grocery items, small inventory but a good spot if you forgot something simple at the supermarket. They also have a nice selection of imported candy and chocolate (Dark Chocolate Kit-Kat!) as well as pastries/muffins that go very quickly so again, go early. They get a daily delivery of baguettes and rolls from Panorama as well, which is a great addition. Prices aren't cheap, this is not the place to go to do your grocery shopping, but they aren't inflated much, very average for a convenience store. Every once in a while they will give me free products that they can't legally sell (recently opened wine, damaged packaging, etc) which is always great! Decent selection of cheap wines. Small selection of beer, all 6-packs or cheap 12-packs (PBR, Bud, Tecate) and a couple 24oz bottles. The 12-pack of Bud is usually $10, Tecate $11. The hours can differ, especially during winter-time. They are almost always open until 8pm, but if the sun goes down early in the day they will close by 6 or 7. Spring/Summer/Fall hours are pretty consistent, though. Support your local markets! read more
