I'd heard many good things about this little deli and its reputation matches the skills. Very tasty sandwich (I got the chicken pesto). The owner clearly cares about his customers and prepares the sandwiches with lots of attention and love. Sadly he is alone in the store so it can become a bit overwhelming at times with people lining up, but give him some time and you won't regret it. How I LOVE my local bodega. Mike is one of the nicest, most genuine people who me would have the pleasure to interact with. When ever he is there, my sandwiches are always made with love and care. This place is a true gem. The serve a drip coffee (local SF roasted coffee) that is absolutely scrumptious. They have a very good baieyybid beverages (beer, wine, juice, sparkling water, CBD creams, and everything in between). The breakfast sandwiches are dreamily. Don't judge a book by it's cover; judge byYelp instead! I walk past New Star Market on the way to work but never would have tried it if it wasn't for Yelp. It's in a rough neighborhood and so obviously NOT a 5 star joint that I had to check it out to see why everyone rated it so highly. From the outside it looks like a down-on-its-luck lotto and liquor store in a bad area. TBH, it doesn't look a whole lot better on the inside: while it's very clean and neat, it's also old and shopworn. But the care and dedication of the owner, George, makes up for that. The individually brewed cups of coffee are as good as any I've had in San Francisco. The coffee is always perfectly fresh and fragrant, but much cheaper than Starbucks, Peet's or any boutique barista bar. The food, also made to order, is fresh, plentiful and cheap. I sometimes pick up coffee and breakfast on the way to work. The perfect coffee is matched by a large bagel with lots of fresh eggs and bacon and cheese (ask for cheddar not American). All that for about $7. I was so impressed by breakfast I tried them for lunch. That was great too. Sandwiches and panini made to order with fresh ingredients and generous helpings, for $7 or $8. At first sight, I couldn't believe that Yelpers were giving this place 5 stars. But after experiencing the service, the fantastic coffee and great food at low prices, I could only give one score to this diamond in the rough: 5 stars. read more

Service is great and price is great. So why the three stars? Had the caprese and given the ratings was expecting real mozarella, real basil, real bread etc etc. But it wasnt. It was the regular US processed version rather than anything "authentic" or Whole Foodish or Safeway "Premier Range". You get my point. If you like Boars Meat salami, if you like your cheese "American, Swiss or Provolone" then this is a great place. The guy is very friendly and will put halapenos and extra onion on everything. Which if you are eating processed "stuff" always helps. So its all good and a solid four star good. Four star "USA" good. But if you dont want to eat food that's out of a tin, packet or box then it aint going to happen. If you want authentic "European" or "Meditarranean" then its two stars. This is my favorite corner liquor store only because George (the owner) is the coolest. And man he makes a mean eggplant dip. Hail George! New Star Market is your typical Mission neighborhood liquor store, with a deli. George's deli is inexpensive and built to stay that way. Decent value. I love to people watch in the store with friends and chat with George because you get all kinds of folk in this joint: bums, drunks, illegals, yuppies, hipsters, it's the freakin' roll of the dice. Good times! However, over the last two years, gentrification has kinda cleaned up the neighborhood. For example, the apartment building next door is no longer called the "Meth Hotel". 14th St. still has a ways to go as far as clean up, but there aren't needles on the sidewalk either. - end rant But enough about the neighborhood, George is a good guy and that's why I like to shop at his store. He has a sense of humor and seems to care about people, unlike a lot of typical liquor store owners in San Francisco. EDIT. George sells the strongest fucking coffee in S.F! Not only is this place on my block, I don't know a better sub for the money in all of San Francisco. The Mediteranean is my favorite, with fresh avocado, artichoke hearts, and other good stuff. Prices are very reasonable, ingredients are fresh, meats and cheeses are sliced to order, and sandwiches are prepared with care. If your ideal of a sub is Subway, you'll be pleasantly surprised about what a personal touch can do. It'll take an extra minute or two, but you'll get much more for about the same price. Other than the deli, it's a pretty typical corner market -- and beer-wise it's reasonably priced considering some of the other places in the neighborhood. read more

I used to go here a lot. And I hopped on yelp to write a review. After scrolling through some other ones found one with an upset customer over the guy not washing his hands to prepare the food. That got me concerned so I stopped coming. After a year hiatus, I came to check it out again. I asked for the breakfast sandwich. While he microwaved the egg, he attended another customer and handled cash. He then came back to me and grabbed my bread. I had to ask him to stop and wash his hands before he continues. I couldn't see if he actually used soap or just rinsed. Like any convenience store, the thing that first brought me to New Star was the location -- it was simply the closest place to my office where I could get coffee creamer or a quick snack. What brings me back is the stellar service, where the owners know their neighbors and keep an eye on the neighborhood. Or the great selection, where you can get everything from basic groceries to household items to beer and liquor. Or the incredible food -- fresh pastries, made-to-order deli sandwiches, coffee by the cup. This place simply can't be beat. I now make trips across town to come here, location be damned. Across this place when we were going to the SF Beer Fest at the Armory. In a bit of a sketchy part of town, it didn't look like much. We were hungry and a sandwich sounded like a great idea. Place is small, has a table for 3 inside and 2 tables for 2 outside. They also sell some piroshki (which I didn't try but they were a good size). The order: One BLT on wheat and a California on Sour Dough Roll. The California was HUGE and tasty. I split it with a friend and we were both satisfied. The BLT was decent. Microwaved bacon, which was a little sad making but the taste with everything else made up for it. The man working there (I assume is also the owner) reminded me of my grandfather. Greeted people and was very nice. If I am in the area and want a sandwich I will do it again. Also random mention, I had a gal ask me where she could get coffee and I suggested this place. Wife and I stopped by this liquor store for coffee. Much to our surprise they made it one cup at a time. Normally we would go to Pete's coffee due to how strong the coffee is. I checked what my fellow yelper's said about this place and it was positive (thought I take their comments with a grain of salt since I have been burned by them in the past). Nevertheless, I had their coffee and while I had to wait longer than usual, the coffee was very good. I did not tried any of their sandwiches due to lack of time, however I would be back to try them in the future. For now they get four stars for service and quality of the coffee. read more

Went in to grab a cup in order to avoid the line at Four Barrel ... SO GLAD I did. Not only was the coffee made & dressed by hand by a dapper guy in a vest, it was incredible coffee and the guy who paid for a paper in front of me paid "for two. One today and one yesterday." the girlfriend and i come in here all the time, considering we live right around the corner. usually our trips include "girlfriend making dinner and ran out of heavy whipping cream" runs or "we're out of eggs for breakfast" trips. our experiences are always what we expect; they usually always have what we need, and besides a $10 minimum on our debit card, our trip is generally satisfactory. that being said, i called the girlfriend as she was getting off the bart and walking home and asked if she could pick up some wet cat food for our kitten. i had no idea where the girlfriend was going to stop, as there are a bunch of liquor/convenience stores from the bart to us, and because our regular grocery store is also just two short blocks away. she gave the food to our cat right away and our cat ate it up quickly. it wasn't until last night that we noticed something may be wrong, as she started acting unusually aggressive and downright mean. i kept wondering if she was maybe in pain, though i didn't know from what. i looked at the food, and noticed that the "best buy" date on the cat food that we had been feeding to her the last two days was over a year and a half ago! i was frustrated and over-tired from work that week and quickly decided that i was going to go there and speak to the store clerk and demand a refund. i did today, a bit more hesitantly than i had originally planned (as i had gotten some much needed rest and relaxation), and went over and let him know that the food we bought was expired and that i thought that i might have made my cat sick. i whipped out the last remaining cat food packet and showed him. the store clerk was genuinely sorry. he kept apologizing and saying that he didn't know and quickly computed and paid me a refund. it was only $4, but i got what i came in there for and much much more. new star market really is a special place. they do care. they may be small and family owned, but it's part of their charm (as long as you don't get food poisoning). from the genuine service from behind the counter, to the tables and chairs that are set up in the middle of the small shop for you drink your coffee, read your paper, eat your donut, and have a good conversation with the clerk, new star is more than just a neighborhood liquor/convenience store. i also really like that there are actually tables and chairs inside the store for people to sit down with their coffee and donut with! awesome! read more

This place is so awesome I wanna tell everybody about it and nobody about it at the same time. Wow the sandwiches here. Fresh ingredients,fully loaded wonderfully priced. I'm not gonna stop coming here until I try every last one, find a few favorites (which is going to be tough), and eat those every day until the end of time. And the sandwiches are not even my favorite thing about this place! The guys behind the counter are awesome. The store has been around for 80 years and one of them has been running it for 20.They have pictures of kids in the neighborhood above the counter, some of whom they've known since they were babies until they are now married with children. I mean where else can you find a gem of a store like this?
