This used to be my neighborhood grocery, and boy did I earn my beer or sandwich... the walk up was a big fat workout. For real. And I miss it! I like the view of downtown from the sitting spots outside. This is a small place but packed with good things. If you like farm fresh veggies and fruit, this is a good place to be! This is everything you could possibly want in a neighborhood deli. Fantastic sandwiches, a wide selection of chips, pop and sundries, and an awesome patio on which to enjoy them all. I took the advice of Brett P. and tried the meatball sandwich and it was crazy good. Probably the best meatball sandwich I've ever tried. The bread was a crispy ciabatta, and there was plenty of sauce and provolone cheese to bind it all together. The meatballs were the star of the sandwich, as they should be, and they had a great, Italian flavor. They had lots of meats, cheeses and topping to choose from, and you could get your sandwich warm or cold, so there's something for everyone. If I lived in the neighborhood, this would be my go-to meal. read more

Ready for a picnic on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I called up Ike's Place, and they said it would be a 1 hour wait for phone orders and a 20 minute wait if I dropped in and ordered...ugh. So I decided to try Chiotras sandwiches for the first time... We got the meatball sandwich, the black forest ham sandwich, and the pastrami sandwich. No wait. Good portions. Delicious! Run by a pair of friendly Iranians, the fresh-made sandwiches are consistently excellent, if a little bit pricey. The thing to do is to go out onto the back porch on a sunny day and eat while watching the chickens in their backyard roam around and peck at things (yes, they keep chickens). They're also a handy neighborhood store, and I frequently head up there to refill my stash of espresso beans, for a much more reasonable rate ($11/lb) than Blue Bottle (~$17lb, depending on which variety you get). Yes, Blue Bottle is better, but it's sure not 55% better. Also, bonus points for the friendly store dogs. read more

This place changed hands a few months ago and transformed from a dump into a really nice clean place. The new owners are super duper nice and have a real community connection with their customers. The selection is amazing; sometimes I just stare and try and memorize what's on the shelf because there's so much good stuff packed in there. Just try and walk in there and hang out for 5 minutes without either ending up chatting with proprietor Beth, or seeing someone else do so. I wish this store was in my neighborhood! read more

It was such a pleasant experience to walk into a local grocery shop and actually have a conversation with the owners, who were tending the counter. I've made two visits so far, and both have been for fairly simple foodstuffs, so I've come away happy. I imagine the trend to continue in the future. This shop has the basics -- milk, eggs, butter, cereal, snacks, soda -- along with some fresh produce and a great selection of meats. Add to that a shelf full of wine and a fridge section of pretty decent beers, and you get a convenient stop on the way home to pick up any of those last-minute essentials. read more

I have to say that their baked turkey sandwich is amazing. The turkey is tender and moist, their breads are fresh, the ingredients are crisp and brightly colored... I was still hungry after, so I would recommend a side dish or chips, but good deal and a nice local stop. read more

The sandwiches are good, though the pickles, mustard, and mayo overpowers the flavor of the bread, meat, and vegetables. Substantial in size. They have an adorable back patio eating area where you can look down into the chicken coop and garden. There are also two puppies that live upstairs, and like to come down to sun themselves on the patio. Watching the cocks in the garden and the napping puppies makes the eating experience feel warm and humbling. read more

They have good sandwiches made with fresh, locally made bread; fresh coffee all day; great service; and a good selection of meats, cheeses, beverages, and other food items. This place is very clean, and seems to have a wide variety of items of good quality, although I've only bought coffee and vitamin water there in the 5 days I've been here, and has very pleasant service. And they have the basics, too but the wine selection is first rate - you would not find these wines in any other grocery store let alone a small family store. This place has a great selection, incredible sandwiches, and the owners are kind and make the neighborhood feel like home.

Things I like about Chiotra's: 1) There are some really affordable wines there (I've compared with other local stores on The Hill: i.e., Dave's on 20th/Connecticut and Potrero Market on 18th/Texas) and for some of the same wine, Chiotra's comes out a couple of dollars less expensive. Also competitive with Safeway given that Chiotra's is closer. 2) The cheese selection: great choices and you can request what size slice/chunk you want... unlike the Good Life on 20th and Connecticut where you're forced to buy the prepackaged HUGE chunks of comparably unique cheeses. This can get really expensive and seems very avaricious and insensitive on the part of the Good Life Grocery owners. 3) The pastry treats, especially the Russian tea cakes. 4) Beth, one of the owners. Always cheerful and charmingly chatty, it's a pleasure seeing her when shopping at Chiotra's. I also love the fact that she's a local gal, growing up on The Hill and sharing the same knowledge of the history of Chiotra's as I do. I've lived on Potrero Hill for twenty-two years and knew the original owners of Chiotra's as did Beth as well as the interim Korean Kim family who put their sons through college with their Chiotra's income. Old Pete Chiotra of Greek immigrant family, opened the store in 1917. Beth, being of Russian ancestry, told me that her grandmother's generation would never shop at Chiotra's but at the Russian grocery just a few doors down on Rhode Island! Gotta love that local lore. Beth went to Convent of the Sacred Heart HIgh School and I went to St. Ignatius College Prep. It's a joy to have "old SF g's" like us see each other regularly. read more

Despite being fairly new to the neighborhood, I feel right at home at Chiotras. They save me a longer trip to Whole Foods since they offer similar products, fresh breads, fruits and sandwiches and service with a smile. My local grocery store only 2 uphill blocks away! read more

Went here for some OJ and asked the lady for cheapest 52 oz container. Go to counter and learn it's $8.99. Left store and drive two blocks to the corner store on 21st and Kansas and they charged me $5.99 for the same identical product. I hope this serves a lesson on knowing margins and being fair to your customer or that store goes out of business. read more

How have I not written a review for Chiotras before now?!? This place is the heart of the neighborhood. It is the quintessential neighborhood market. Its where you go for morning latte, a quick delicious sandwich, a great bottle of wine for dinner. They have a diverse selection of groceries and supplies that run the gamut from laundry detergent to an unexpected boutique soda. The owners Beth and Ramzi are the perfect mixture of kindhearted and smartass (in the best possible way). This is the gathering place for the hood where neighbors meet, become friends, and make a community. As the neighborhood grows, I am sure this place will evolve into the BiRite of Potrero but for now I am content to have it be the small jewel of the hood. I highly recommend a turkey club on ciabatta, eaten on the back patio, while giving a little pet to one of the numerous neighborhood dogs who prefer Beth & Ramzi over their own home. read more

I love that we have this little store so close to us- we're in here almost everyday for something or other- Usually smokes or something we need for a recipe. I was craving a desert one night, and John brought me back a homemade (at least it tasted homemade- so soft and chewy) macaroon. I have now found my crack replacement. You can judge a deli by its tuna salad sandwich (take it from someone who worked through college at various delis) - and Chiotras has an amazing tuna salad sandwich. I just crushed a toasted wheat bread sandwich with tuna salad, tomatoes, mustard, pickles, pepperoncinis and pepper jack cheese. It was delicious. The woman working there was incredibly friendly and gave me a taste of the tuna before committing. She seemed calm and patient as I made my selection. Two neighbors came in while I was there and she recognized both by name and said, "the usual?" It was wonderful and made me realize I've found my home in San Francisco. Expensive, but truly THEE best sandwich on the hill. I just had the garlic rosemary turkey on chiabatta and HOT DAMN that was one good sandwich! Everything is fresh and well put together. They didn't have the fresh roast turkey today, but I'll try that next time. I used to frequent Klein's when they were open and Chiotra's is way better. Be ready to spend $8 for a sandwich, but it's well worth it. read more
