VIP Ham is a tradition in my family for at least 30+ years. Best around for decades now.

As a child growing up in New Orleans I remember by grandfather from New Iberia coming to visit frequently. I have a lot of fond memories from his visits, but one of the things I remember is applicable to this review. Whenever he would arrive he would have several gifts for the family. I'm not talking about traditional gifts either. He would bring several packs of boudin and hogs head cheese from a local New Iberia shop. That must have had a lasting effect, because since then, I am on a never ending quest for good boudin and head cheese. I was on such a quest just the other day when I noticed Boudreaux's. The moment I walked in, I knew I was in the right place. There were coolers filled with stuffed chickens, roasts, pork loins, gumbo, étouffée and all other sorts of Cajun delights. In the fresh counter is where I focused my attention and will elaborate on a few items. Boudin - fresh, homemade and with the perfect combination of meat and rice. It had a slight kick, but not to overwhelming. Stuffed chicken thighs - stuffed with jalapeño cream cheese and wrapped in bacon. $375 for around 30 minutes covered and 20 uncovered. Oh my goodness gracious was this delicious. Even if you don't normally like thighs, I strongly recommend this item. Smoked boudin - I don't remember smoked boudin when I was growing up, but what a great idea. Boudreaux's version was perfect. Smoked sausage with pepper jack cheese - whatever you do, but some of this sausage. The sausage is made and smoked in house and this is, without a doubt, the best smoked sausage I've ever had. I don't know how it hod hold up in gumbo or some other dish, but it is amazing on its own. The people working behind the counter were friendly and very helpful. If you're like me and miss the Cajun butcher shops of Acadiana, I recommend you take a trip to Boudreaux's.

Très Bon's menu includes pulled pork, brisket, grit bowls, cracklins, and ribs- and that's just scratching the surface. Their sandwiches include smoked brisket with pimento cheese, BBQ pork and slaw, and pulled pork with garlic mayo. If that's not enough for you, Très Bon offers deep fried Oreos and a Maple Bacon Sundae and they have a fridge full of sausage and other goodies packed up just waiting for you to take home- talk about "very good"! I had the pulled pork platter with corn grits and andouille mac ($13). This platter was delicious. First of all, the portions were huge! The pulled pork was actual pulled pork and not a pile of pork shavings covered in barbecue sauce that you tend to get at some other spots. It was juicy and smoky perfection on a plate. I never think of corn grits as a barbecue side, but Très Bon is here to change all of that- creamy and rich, they were perfect with the pork. The andouille mac was in a league of its own- VERY cheesy and the andouille was a nice touch, but totally not necessary as the mac spoke for itself. I loved the huge portions and cool atmosphere. Look around and you'll see old matchbooks on display, an extensive hot sauce collection and even vintage pinball machines. Really though, it's all about the delicious food at a great price. The meat counter is impressive - they have just about any part of any animal in there, nicely pickled pink. A lot of the selection is from the swine, and appears to be done in house. The butchers are knowledgable, and know their way around a pickled piece o' meat. The first time I swung in this joint, I picked up a twenty pound case of the $23.99 Spare Ribs. They were about exactly what one would expect from spare ribs that cost a buck a pound. They were very lean, very bony, very frozen, and very imported from Denmark. Will enough love and a good pitmaster, they were serviceable. Since then, I discovered the glories of the meat markets at Restaurant Depot and Costco - but they hardly carry any pickled meats. The rest of the store is just a small grocery store, with nothing at all exciting going on, especially with Casey Jones about 300 yards across the street. If you're headed to Sal's Super Meat Market, you're headed their for the largest selection of Pickled Meat that I know of in the Greater New Orleans Area. Four stars for the Pickled Meat niche.

Everything was disrespectfully delicious. Every bite had us questioning our life choices in the best way. By the end of the meal, we were all sleepy and completely defeated by how good the food was. The staff was on point, courteous, and polite. Our food came out hot, fast, and perfectly plated with consistency that never misses. My only small complaint is that the sweet potato habanero sauce isn't as thick as it used to be. I'm a little annoyed about that, but it still tastes exactly the same Cochon Butcher remains one of those must visit New Orleans spots that never disappoints. We ordered the black-eyed pea chili and the muffuletta, and the sandwich completely stole the show. The bread was perfectly soft, and you can really taste the difference in quality with their in-house meats. The olive salad tied the whole thing together, complementing the rich, savory flavors perfectly. That being said, the space gets extremely crowded on busy days. It's tight enough that you'll likely have people bumping into your chair or brushing past you while you eat and walk through the dining room. The biggest downside was the service at the counter. The line to the cashiers was very disorganized. Instead of calling the next person in line, one cashier was pulling people up at random, which made the ordering process frustrating. Overall, the food is fantastic, but be prepared for chaotic crowds and a messy ordering system during peak hours.
