Delicious bbq with some really great options. They've also got an extensive local beer menu that pairs really well with all the meats. I wish I had more stomach space to keep eating. I went back and forth on writing this review but ultimately decided that I need to be accurate even when I don't have a great experience so that businesses have a chance to improve with feedback. So here we go: Food: the sides and apps were great! They've got these down. They're flavorful and very tasty. The mains though are very lacking. This was some of the driest brisket I've ever had. I was pretty disappointed especially since you go to a bbq restaurant specifically for the meats. I also had the taco Tuesday special. Do yourself a favor and don't order this. Two of the three tacos were nasty (smoked chicken and the brisket) The pulled pork one was good though. The menu is a little confusing. We couldn't ask our server to clarify (more on this in a second) so we kinda ordered blind. I wish I'd known more or I would've ordered something else. I had no idea what came on the tacos besides what meat they were going to be. Maybe a little description would go a long way. Service: I'm torn here. Now the bartender was hustling. He was phenomenal and taking care of his own people AND others near the bar. Our server though... he was at the host stand when we walked up. We said we had a party of two and he just pointed at a table. We were like ... uhhh... and then he said "You can sit there" at the table he pointed at "or inside or even in the back or whatever." Ok cool open seating I guess? Turns out he was our server too. It seemed like it was his first day being in a restaurant, not just this restaurant. I asked if a side came with the tacos and he explained that there are three tacos with different meats... I knew right then that any menu questions would not be answered. He didn't bring refills, the bartender handled that and ran our food even though we weren't his table. He was more personable in the 30 seconds of interaction we had with him than our server then entire time he waited on us. We got the impression he wanted to hide rather than serve us. It was odd. The whole experience had my husband and I looking at each other saying "wtf" the whole time... Not sure if we will be back. Dining in was definitely a better experience! We got there right before they opened on a Saturday, so no crowds. I got the brisket chili with a side of cornbread as my meal. The chili was packed with meat, and the cornbread was a whole mini-loaf that came with what I think was honey butter; delicious. My mother enjoyed her burger, and my father said his brisket was both delicious and lean, in case you're one who hates fatty brisket. So my husband and I got take out from here last night and it was amazing. Let me start by commending their customer service. We initially put in order (using their own website, not Uber Eats - better deal as those middle man companies charge more for the exact same food in addition to the service charges!), and it arrived in the early part of the expected window, which is always a pleasant surprise. We opened everything looking and smelling amazing, but sadly our brisket order was under-weighed. I called immediately and they realized the mistake. They were so apologetic, quick to replace the food, and went above and beyond that along with a refund-can't ask for better service and that's how you keep happy customers! Ok on to the food. It speaks for itself-I'd eat it out of a broken down shack it's so good, but the restaurant is actually super cool so will definitely be going back to enjoy a beer at the bar and on the breezy patio. Brisket was tender and fatty, ribs were fall off the bone and so flavorful, pulled pork was moist and savory, wings are literally best I've had (we liked all of them but if you don't get the Alabama white you are sorely missing out!) Their BBQ sauce is just the cherry on top for everything but you really don't need condiments when the meats are this good. We ordered delivery from this place and the highlights were the fatty and tender brisket meat, decadent spicy Mac & cheese, and the creamy nostalgic potato salad that reminded me of my childhood. Low lights would be the overcooked & unseasoned brussel sprouts, dry cornbread, and weird brisket chili. [I'm such a huge brussel sprout person but I'm sorry to say that this was probably some of the worse brussel sprouts that I've ever eaten.] And the brisket chili fries had a weird flavor profile that kind of reminded me of a less-than-desirable school lunch. I had to add bbq sauce just to cope with the pain. Fries were extra crispy, brisket was delicious. I'm not a big fan of barbecue sauce, so I ate mine without it. Staff is attentively friendly. My only complaint is how salty the brussel sprouts were. I ate one and refused to eat the rest, they were extremely salty, like someone accidentally spilled a container of salt into them. Not pictured is the corn bread, which was very delicious and the $5 cocktail of the day French75. Look in the N.W. corner of the centre, raised slightly, on the end. The name ''Frey'' has a long & respected history in the Louisiana beef & pork meats industry, although I don't know if these are the same folks. There are few things I enjoy more than a good sandwich for lunch and the Bar-B-Cuban definitely hit the spot. Cuban sandwiches are one my favorite sandwiches, but I hate when the meat is too thick or too dry. The pulled pork and ham were perfect and the N.O. Gold Sauce added a slight sweetness that I didn't know I wanted or needed. Frey is a little ducked off (it's the last suite in a small shopping strip), but I think it's perfect for lunch either solo or with a group. There are few table outside so you can enjoy some fresh air when it isn't 1000º. The inside is also super cute and relatively quiet, but maybe we had just missed the rush. Two extra little cups of delicious BBQ sauce for dipping. The meats could have been a little warmer, but it's a chilly day, so having them cool off a bit on the 12-15 minute drive isn't a dealbreaker. The coleslaw and potato salad were both fantastic. Nice smoked meats spot. They had outside seating which is always a good treat with nice weather. We ordered the pork belly poppers with pepper jelly. They reminded me of cracklins from the good country spots but with more "meat" and kinda of like "flashed" fried. They were good. I also ordered the smoked chicken sandwich. I've had it before, but this time it wasn't as good as before. It was dry. It could have used more sauce for my liking and the bread could have been softer for me. I went on a tues and ordered the trio taco. 3 tacos(pulled pork, beef brisket and fried chicken strips) It was a lot of food for the money and the flavor was amazing! Good quality food. Like they are best shared by 2 people. Don't think it's a typical single serve shake. It's a ton of ice cream and lots of toppings. Couple with us ordered the cookie monster shake and we ordered the nutella Reese's shake. The mugs are frozen with the lip of the mug rolled in chocolate and covered in the toppings (oreo cookies for the cookie monster and reese's puffs for the nutella Reese's). They are heavy and filling. So you won't need to order as much food. I can't really eat anything here but the hubby was excited to try it as was the couple with us. I ordered cheddar mac and a side of brussel sprouts and corn bread. The mac comes out in a skillet, super hot and melty, and nice and creamy. The Brussels sprouts were flaky and crispy but a bit too salty (also, it is not big pieces of sprouts, it is the leaves that are crisped). The corn bread was a rather small piece that looked like it's baked in individual tins, but it was yummy. Especially with the honey butter on top. Overall enjoyed the meal they were just all items that were heavy and feel like they are sitting in my belly like a rock lol. Hubby ordered the pulled pork burger. The pork was pretty good, tender and not overly seasoned but he couldn't really taste the pork on the burger as a whole. The fries were thin and crisp and lightly seasoned. Nice establishment tucked away behind a couple of businesses off of N. Carrollton. They have their own parking. It was a bonus not to have street parking. They have the option for you to eat outside, which is fantastic. When ordering the wings, you have a choice of Alabama white or buffalo, etc. but these are sauces that come on the side. This was our first dine-in meal since moving to NOLA, and we are so happy we took a chance on a new spot. My husband is an avid griller/"bbq expert" and is super critical whenever we eat bbq. Well, Frey delivered the tender brisket he's been craving and we will be coming back frequently. I had the brisket sandwich with potato salad, and he chose the perfectly cooked brussels and beans for his combo. My applause goes to the ownership here, I can tell they do an A+ job with training staff because the customer service was amazing. Every staffer we ran into was of the utmost professionalism and kindness. I wish I could get everyone's name, but I do know Demi the bartender was super friendly and courteous and our server Alexia did an amazing job. The service along gets 5 stars from me but the food was delicious too! So win-win. The interior was very cool and the bathrooms were clean. The patio outside is very nice and the TV mounted in the wall was real cool. I enjoy that it is pet friendly too. Our dog came and was quite popular with the staff. The wind outside also caused my gf to drop her to go plate and Demi had the cook staff replace her brisket free of charge. Just A+ customer service. I always try to challenge myself to eat more than my bodyweight in cajun food when I'm in NOLA. This time the friend I was staying with took me to Frey in Mid City, my old neighborhood. It wasn't there when I left, but I sure am glad it's there now. I told her I was hungry & didn't want to eat out again that day. She said, "I'll take you somewhere you'll fill up for good." She was right. I ordered the Pulled Pork BBQ Platter with baked beans & cornbread. It was delicious. I slathered it in their classic bbq sauce. We also ordered the Cheddar Mac to split & it was so rich that we took most of it home because our meals were too filling to totally tackle both. My only criticism is the service. While our greeter was very friendly, she took our order & then forgot to bring my drink for a while. She then disappeared, someone else brought our entrees, and she didn't come check on us until we were almost ready for our checks. I never got a drink refill & when I tried to get her attention for a to-go drink she was too busy talking to a guy in the bar area to notice. That wont stop me from returning the next time I visit the city. I'd love to try the hot fried chicken sandwich and one of their GIANT milkshakes.
