The Choice Cafe an intimate American style diner on the south side. Menu February 2017.
    Mary Margaret M.

The Choice Café is an immigrant owned hole-in-the-wall serving some of the most delicious food in the area. The menu cover shares the story of long-time owner, Sonny, who came to America to be a petroleum engineer. He put himself through college at OU by working at restaurants. He worked in the oil fields, but missed home cooked meals, as the story goes. He worked in various big restaurants and in 1996 decided to open his own spot-a tiny mom & pop café now known as Choice Café located on S. Shields. He is the main man in the kitchen and certainly knows his way around. I dropped in for lunch recently and was really surprised. I didn't know what to expect, but I left full and really happy and planning for my return. I heard about this spot from folks that work in the area--it came highly recommended and boy were they right. --FOOD-- They hand-cut their potatoes for French fries each morning, the waitress told me. That was enough for me--yes, please!! I was delighted with the fries. They were served hot (a MUST for fries) and were dusted with a tasty seasoning--I couldn't get enough. I heard the waitress calling orders back to the kitchen as we sat and waited for our food. I heard her call out a dish with a double side of French fries and now I know why--don't miss out--they are awesome. I had the gyro on pita bread. It was so wonderful. It had the perfect balance of gyro meat, veggies and sauce. I will definitely be back to order the gyro & fry combo again. Every bite was so scrumptious. The chicken sandwich wrap was also so very yummy. The chicken was tender and juicy. The wrap had a great balance of flavor and was a winner. Their pecan pie is off-the-chain. If you like pecan pie, treat-yo-self. It is well worth it. --SERVICE-- We had a wonderful waitress. She took care of all of us and ran the register. She was busy, but was always sure to check in on us and was happy to give recommendations as well--which were spot on. I enjoyed her honesty, attention to detail, and hospitality. --OVERALL-- I really enjoyed my experience here. It is a tried-and-true hole in the wall. As far as hole-in-the-walls go, this is a new favorite. Its not a steakhouse, its not a fast food restaurant, its not a elegant place, but for what it is, it does IT well. I hope if you are in the area and looking for a spot to eat, you will give Choice Café a try, I highly recommend it.

I often find myself daydreaming of these Chili Cheese dogs. Hands down the best I've ever had!! Choice Cafe is my favorite hole in the wall spot. The hours are very short (I think they close by 3pm?) so get it while you can!! Follow me on IG for more :) @Mayras_Foodgram

I was blown away by how clean this place is. The woman running the show was very friendly and on top of it all. My food is delicious . I've been working over here more than 6 months and now I'm kicking myself for not going sooner. WOW. As someone that's ran multiple restaurants over the years I am very impressed. Definitely will become a regular. Thanks to the kitchen staff also.

I came here expecting wonderful food due to previous reviews, but, in reality, our food came to us…read more50/50%. Please let me explain. I came in and it took a few minutes before someone cane out of their very closed-off kitchen to receive my order. The gentleman did get my order and ensured himself and me that he heard my order correctly...I appreciated that! I ordered three gyros, one without the sauce and another just meat and bread with the third gyro being a full gyro without any special instructions. I also order the kafta, and I am so glad I did! There were several people that came in after me. They all went to the counter and waited without anyone coming out to take their order. Most left as they were all enclosed behind the wooden room divider. This divider certainly did divide the staff and their customers. One could not see into the kitchen at all nor a staff member to see their customers. It was a very strange set-up. When a customer comes into a restaurant, they usually are able to see someone there, but not here. The divider goes from the floor to the ceiling. It is a shame, truly. The dining room held a few tables and chairs. Everything was very clean. No complaints there. I soon received my food and went home. All the gyro sauces are kept in tiny plastic to-go cups. Most of the tops had popped off, during my ride home, leaving most of the sauce covering the inside of the bag, making quite a mess and leaving us with very little sauce. Unloading the sack, very gingerly due to this sauce, I found our order was complete and perfectly executing per my instructions. That is a great feat in itself! I was so happy that I didn't have to call asking for a forgotten gyro or one that was not made properly. We all sat down to eat our gyros and all were going to sample the kafta. The kafta was so very good. It was still hot and juicy! The spices and the meat just made our mouths so happy. We all loved it! The gyros though, were a sad experience for all of us. The gyro kept was mostly VERY dry with some meat being actually crispy and way too dried out! The gyro bread was very dry as well. None of us were able to finish our gyros. The hungriest of us had three bites out of his. We really tried but the sauce did not even make it right as the sauce failed to cover-up that dryness! The owner is most welcome to say his piece as is evident they excercise their right with most of the reviews that are short of singing their praises. But I think that if these reviews are read by them in a way that they were open to constructive criticism, and used that energy in a positive way to figure out what they need to do to protect the meat and bread from drying out as they do the kafta, both the customers and they would help winners. I want to come back soon and try them again with much hope that they have found a way to keep the meat and bread from drying out. If so, my mouth will sing the staff and gyro their praises! I would then be a very happy and consistent customer of LoQm'e! Blessings to you all.

As a tourist, I could definitely see how the neighborhood is definitely something that might draw people from visiting, but good food is often found in unknown places. Pros: the gal who took our orders was super sweet and the cook that came out to deliver our food was also very pleasant. Overall, flavors and quality seemed to be good for the price. Cons: gal was very obviously stressed due to how she greeted us with a "I'm getting rid of most of the menu in order to simplify" and then literally told us that everything we came for was basically gone (cook/baker left). No chili, no fries, no desserts and she was out of one of the burgers. Also, the inside of this restaurant is obviously still questioning its identity because it was giving farm glam but things made no sense for its namesake (mirrors? Why so many TVs and little blackboards? Bougie paintings? House music? Farm animal home decor?) also...the women's bathroom was hella scary and had awful lighting yet the men's bathroom was well lit. Food: flavor was there, but some things just weren't - Parmesan fries just had like garlic salt on them? Both our taco meat was lukewarm and no cheese would melt. My fries supposedly had nacho cheese but came out with real cheese, which hey, better for me. Drinks were also blah - canned. It's just a preference but it's very limiting. I hope the menu isn't revamped to the point where their ratings keep declining, but to us, it was disappointing seeing such enticing photos and reviews to get lukewarm food and a very limited selection of foods.

All secondary roads are still snow packed so at 11:30 there was only one other couple in the restrauant. The Press is in an old (1920's ?) repourposed building. The interior is comfortable, charming and a bit whimsical. We started with an order of cheese sticks. They were very good and large. I liked that the cheese sticks did not have Italian seasoning in the breading. Jan ordered the chicken fried ribeye with mashed potatoes, cream gravey and green beans. Jan loved it. I took a bite of the chicken fried steak and it was excellent. The green beans were very good. They were loaded with garlic, which I love, but if you're not a garlic fan, I would suggest another side. I ordered the grilled chicked sandwich with waffle fries. The sandwich was good and the waffle fries were excellent. The portions are large and the food quality excellent. The prices reasonable. The menu has variety. I came here with a large group of about 8 of us with a reservation made early on. We were seated in a nice, private room and had an overall very lovely experience! First of all, our server Trey was just spot on with all of his recommendations. He recommended the crab cakes, the halibut, and anything that came with the spicy shrimp risotto. Our table got crab cakes to start, and this was probably my favorite dish of the evening! The crab cake was large, fluffy, and full of lump crab topped with a spicy and delicious salsa verde and pico. For the entree I ordered the halibut which was cooked well, but the side of spicy shrimp risotto definitely stole the show (as Trey accurately predicted). Most of our party ordered this and everyone was pretty happy with it! For dessert, our table shared chocolate cake and the coconut creme pie. The chocolate cake was very rich and was probably one of the best chocolate cakes I've had, and I'm not a big chocolate cake person. I still definitely preferred the coconut creme pie, which I would order again next time! Our service was fantastic for the evening, and when Trey tells you to order something, trust him and do it!
