I moved to this neighborhood about 3 months ago and have been frequently visiting this cafe. It is a very busy spot so I don't expect the staff to be super friendly and I know myself what it is like to be under pressure in work. However most staff have been fine and I have never had any problems until I came across one lady who looks to be in her 30's and is often behind the food counter. She is honestly the rudest person I have ever come across working anywhere. I have seen her countless times being extremely rude to other customers too and I find it shocking how she can manage to get away with this behavior. She makes you feel like you are a huge inconvenience to her by simply ordering something or paying for something. Today was the final straw for me when she aggressively shook her head and ignorantly told me that they were finished serving breakfast. Her level of ignorance is absolutely uncalled for in any environment let alone a neighborhood cafe. I will not ever be going back as it just makes me too angry to see how this person gets away with behaving like this. Three of my friends who also live in this area and who regularly visit the cafe have also decided to stop going because of how rude this Woman is. Why pay money to be treated like dirt? The Boutique cafe on the next corner is far nicer and the staff are super friendly, I'll be taking my business there from now on to people who actually appreciate it. read more

I honestly don't understand the fascination with this place. I think it's totally overrated. I've their pastries and hot chocolate and they tasted just like if I'd gotten them at any other coffee shop, nothing special. The lines are ridiculous and the sitting is non-existent. Great place.. i order takeout frequently.. I highly recommend the burger.. I usually go to 67 ..but when going for something more gourmet.. Choice wins.. I love this place.. esp the fries.. I am anxious to try other things.. Only downfall.. over priced sides.. ie.. The broccoli - 1/4 lb for $2.80. which is surprisingly equivalent to 3 florets! And this is cash only :( read more

The food is pretty tasty considering your other options in the immediate area. However, it's constantly crowded, and the wait can be a bit of a deterrent. Best for takeout as there's a ton of douchebags sitting on the benches outside and not eating anything. read more

I love Choice. I always feel a strong sense of community there. It's a great place to chat with neighbors and the food is usually well done. The chocolate chip cookies are great. For the area, this is as good as it gets. I was a Pratt Institute Architecture student and they opened up down the street from us; we were definitely fortunate to be able to find this type of food nearby. I would get the coffee all of the time, though I recently tried the Genmaicha and it was good! [I am now a tea only drinker] And the soups are really good and affordable - they were $4-$4.50, not sure if they're the same price now. And also recommended is the roasted chicken with potatoes - excellent! A great quick-dinner fix. And the mac and cheese, though a somewhat small portion for $4.50, is totally worth it. It is very cheesey and rich, one of the best mac and cheeses I've had. And for dessert, their scones and chocolate chip cookies are killer. Apparently their cakes and tarts are really good, but its not really my thing. Oh and their berry cobbler with fresh whipped cream was AMAZING. The only thing that bothered me about this place was the crappy staff - I remember that the wait used to be way too long and for no seemingly good reason. But I haven't been going here regularly for the last couple of years, so that part of the bitter memory has faded and is outweighed by the fact that the fare is worth the wait in this neighborhood. I can't stand waiting for anything, and the wait at Choice on weekend mornings -- the time I would love to eat one of their delicious egg sandwiches, like the egg, ham and mozzarella served on a ciabatta roll--is just too long to make it worthwhile. Every dish I try here is an adventure. I've had dishes with Syrian spices, a macaroni-and-cheese unlike anything I've had before (swiss cheese?), a ham-and-cheese croissant filled with a delicious new flavor of cheese, and much more. Everything I try is guaranteed to be a new flavor experience, even something as run-of-the-mill as a fish cake. They also have the best decaf coffee in the area. read more

Updated 18 months later: It's just gotten worse since I reviewed a year and a half ago. Delivery takes ridiculously long, especially through Seamless but not only. The staff on the other end of the phone is confused all of the time, and the chicken panini always shows up with cartilage or bone in it (bonus, sometimes both). It's just not worth it. Alas, I'm writing them off. *** Original: I really like the sandwiches here, and I was pleased when they joined Seamless and I could do delivery with a credit card. But every time I order that way, something goes wrong. I get the wrong food. My drink is missing. The order takes forever to arrive. It's totally dampened my enthusiasm for this place. Which is probably fine; at $10 minimum I could stand to save the cash. Still, can't figure out why it's so hard to get a sandwich and a soda right, in less than two hours... read more

The owner was very rude to my friends and I yesterday. I got my sandwich 20 minutes after all my friends and ONLY because I asked them about it repeatedly. Otherwise, they would have forgotten about it. My friends were finished when I got my sandwich and we had to go back to work. I said, "The right thing to do would be to give me a coupon or "comp" the sandwich since I didn't even get to eat it with my friends." The owner laughed at us and refused. That was very rude. Breakfast time: amazing service and polite hardworking employees and even more amazing food. The french toast and pancakes are absolutely mouth watering! I understand that this little shop probably didn't anticipate lines inside that could go around the block twice, but they work that shop very well for what it is. There is this homey feel to the place that I really like that makes waiting 15min for a breakfast sandwich worth the wait..and that's just because of volume. If I'm there and there's no line I'll have my food in a flash! Dinner time: horrible, rude angry turtle-speed employees and mediocre food. Sometimes I cringe when I watch them prepare my dinner boxes. They just throw the food in any old way..one girl took my fish out the oven and then threw it in the microwave with my other items! I felt uncomfortable complaining and just took it home because the employees just gather and glare from the other side of the glass. Not to mention those girls (and no I'm not being sexist. It's literally all girls who work there) curse, complain, stare at their phones, argue with each other, and the last straw for me was when I watched this red headed lady grab a piece of fish with her bare hands, eat it, lick her fingers and continue working without even washing her hands. That was the last time I ever walked in there for dinner. Nighttime drinks are disgusting too. I love getting dessert and coffee but last time, after having an attitude for forgetting MY drink, the barista rolled her eyes at me, LITERALLY said 'i hate this place' and then made me the dullest most watered down latte I've ever consumed...Didn't even know that was possible. On a positive note the delivery people are always polite and since I've been getting my dinner delivered now, I do see the quality in what the chefs prepare. pretty cool little french-inspired cafe that is a stone-throw away from pratt, so as you expect there are a lot of college students, artist, and sometimes somewhat well-known individuals (keri russel) that frequent this joint. they speak french to each other and expect a little of that attitude to come with it, but dont be intimidated and complain! complaining is for individuals who cant handle it. read more

I was completely caught off guard by how awesome this place was. On one of he slower days i was in Brooklyn, I woke up kinda late from the festivities of the previous night, and was in the mood for a late breakfast, I wasn't having any luck finding a place when I spotted Choice Market which looked like what Starbucks pretends to be, I walk in and the sweet smell of danish and scones hits my senses. I was very disrespected in this store. Despite standing in line for nearly 10 minutes for a simple croissant (which all they had to do was put in a bag, not make!!) I was skipped over in the line for two other customers. One who had ordered 3 sandwiches, had not paid yet, and on top of that wanted to order 3 extra coffees. i simply wanted a friggan croissant. Their customer service is horrible, they do not pay attention to their customers and play favorites with their Clinton Hill Yuppie crew. I just want to start by saying that I almost never write reviews ever but the time has come for this one. I am hoping that maybe someone who has the power to change things over there will see this and it might help because I really love this place. I have been going to Choice for over 11 years, ever since I moved to the neighborhood. Since then, especially in the last few years the quality, of the baked goods specifically, has gone way down. It's so so disappointing, because they used to be amazing. I had the most disappointing muffin from there today. It was the "country muffin", which I used to get all the time because it had nuts and carrot and other great stuff in it and was so delicious and unique. Today I got it and it had a few nuts on top and nothing, NOTHING! inside. Just plain white muffin cake. I ask you, who wants to eat a muffin like that?? Especially when it used to be so different?? I have also heard from people I know that the quality of the other muffins is also not as good as it used to be. Please please go back to your old country muffin recipe!! Also the last time I got the veggie burger it was completely different than the burger has been for the last 10 years. It used to be delicious and amazing, I have no idea why they would change the recipe. I will likely never order it again because I did not like the new version. Again, really disappointing. Other things like the coffee and croissants are still good. Except for the almond croissant which has become an overdone gloppy mess in my opinion. I've been going to Choice for three years now, and I've been there on busy days and slow days. I've always received excellent service, and the food is always amazing. Try their burgers (beef and turkey), their sandwiches and paninis, their pasta salads, and the baked goods! Also good is their breakfast (blueberry pancakes! waffles!) In the wintertime they have great apple cider, and they've started making chicken pot pies, a perfect dinner after a long day at the office. The space is small, so please, no SUV-sized strollers, and yes, leave your attitude at the door. There is a communal table which is packed at busy lunch times and breakfast-brunch on the weekends, but otherwise it's a nice place to sit for a bit and eat your grub. If it's nice out, eat outside. You really can't go wrong with Choice ever. read more

Choice Market...I would like to let you know that I think of you often. This place was just a block away from where I was staying on my vacation to New York. We would wake up, leave the apartment, and head straight to Choice. There's always a crowd here, but be patient and it will all be worth it. Their carrot cake cupcakes melt in your mouth. I wasn't too impressed by the BLT. I was very disappointed that I couldn't even taste the famous rosemary mayonnaise. choice market is a bit pricy. (in my standards) but just about average. they kind of remind me of le pain communal table. but just ONE table for every one and they have news papers for shares. I got a bowl of oatmeal there, the one with a lots of toppings on it. It was gosh darn good. deliciously milky oatmeal with a nice array of nuts, bananas and some dried fruit and honey. it was better than le pain's oatmeal. thats for sure. Their muffins and scones are buttery, their carrot cake is amazing, the cheesecake was so-so. The bread pudding tastes more like custard, btw. dont bother with it. However, their almond croissant was AMAZING, way better than their french toast if you ever have a dilemma. OH btw: at around 5PM their muffins and scones go down to 1.50 a pop. scones are around 2.25 and muffins usually cost 1.95? so its a win =) UPDATE: I just had a beef burger here with goat cheese. it was MAGNIFICENT. it's pretty awesome for a 7.50 decent sized burger with fries. My friend prefers this over 67 burger, but I actually like 67 buger more. the only thing I didnt like was the sauce that was dripping all over itself. and that the service was incredibly slow for non-peak hours if you get the burger, maybe try to get the sauce on the side. The salmon burger was as good as the beef burger and the veggie one would have been better if there wasn't a hard boiled egg in it. read more

Choice was only 2 blocks away and even though the I did get to try much breakfast croissant sandwich and pastry I had were very good. My GAWD, I wish I lived around the corner from here rather than just within biking distance. LOVE. The coffee is some of the best in town and the pastries are hands down the best. Haven't tried their meal options yet but their quiche, scones, everything is so good. i am only giving four stars to the great croissants, which are unobtainable in DC and were non-existent in LA. why do croissants taste super yum, authentic and flaky in any ny french cafe and nowhere else? damn. all the butter they put in. flaky, crunchy, just the right balance. their famous strawberry almond muffins are also superb. HOWEVER, aside from the super yum pastries they served weak ass coffee and tea. and their system ain't too great for flowing the customers through, it's like perpetual traffic jam in there, even on weekday mornings after 10 when you think not a lot of foot traffic right? ugh. to die for pastries, just be prepared to grow some patience. read more
