I hate leaving negative reviews, but this experience was honestly unbelievable. My family and I came in for dinner, and I ordered the chicken strips with a baked potato and roll. I ate one chicken strip and my baked potato, and as usual, I saved my roll for last. When I picked it up, I discovered a large bug smashed into the side of the roll. We immediately took the roll to the counter to show the staff. They took it to the back, and we waited about 10 minutes with no update. At that point, I was already feeling nauseous thinking about the possibility that I may have eaten something contaminated. We walked back up to the counter to see what was taking so long and were told they were waiting for the manager, who had apparently "run to the store," to come back and handle the situation. We then waited another 30 minutes. During that entire time, not a single employee came out to check on us, update us, or apologize. When the manager finally arrived, the situation only got worse. There was no apology, no concern, and no attempt to make things right. Instead, she was rude and dismissive. She actually told us, "Next time this happens, bring it up right away so we can swap it out." That response left me completely speechless. First of all, we did bring it up right away--the moment I saw the bug, we took it straight to the counter. Second, saying "next time this happens" raises a pretty concerning question: is finding bugs in food something that happens often enough to have a standard response? Yes, she eventually comped my chicken strip plate, but it was done with such obvious rudeness and attitude that it didn't feel like customer service at all. The issue was never just the cost of the meal--it was the fact that I found a bug in my food and was treated like I was inconveniencing them by bringing it to their attention. Finding a bug in my food was bad enough. The complete lack of urgency, accountability, professionalism, and basic courtesy from management made the experience far worse. I have to admit it was last year around June that I ate there last so hopefully it's improved, but I got the roast beef special for lunch and it was so dried out, It was literally pulverized beef and they served instant potatoes and the whole meal was really really awful. We did get the fried okra as an appetizer and that was to die for delicious. If I go back, it'll just be for the okra because I'm serious, you must get the okra. Their appetizer salad is sooo good too, but they ask you what dressing you want as soon as you sit down, so be prepared! Very good house ranch. We have been driving by Shorty's Place for close to 2.5 years now whenever we head to our family's ranch in Kenedy. My mom has talked up Shorty's Place, and my husband even played in a golf tournament with the owner. It seems to be in the middle of no where, but only about 11 miles from Kenedy, which is not far at all. We came in on a Saturday evening, and I did not see an empty table besides the table we were seated at. We started with calf fries and fried pickles. Both were excellent, fried in a light batter and came with cream gravy. Now, I have never had calf fries, but I figured what the heck, I'll try them. They were pretty tasty, not much flavor to them, and texture was better than I was expecting. I would probably order them again. I ordered the patty melt, because, well, I can't pass up a patty melt when I see if on a menu of a small, divey restaurant. It was so good! The Texas toast was fresh, and the patty was grilled to perfection. The steak fries were fluffy yet had the perfect crisp to them as well. I tasted the Diablo Burger sans the bun, and it was tasty as well. But boy were those jalapeños hot! Whoa! Glad i had a cold beer to wash it down with. We also had an order of sweet breads, which again, I have never tasted, but obviously was feeling brave tonight. Sweet breads had more flavor then the calf fries, and I think they won me over. I will definitely be ordering sweet breads whenever I come across them on a menu. I did notice that Shorty's Place is for sale, I hope whoever buys it continues to serve the same menu. Let's put it this way. There is NOTHING good in Karnes City. I don't know what's wrong with people who rate restaurants anything higher than two stars for any local eatery in this area. I always like Shorty's when we visit twice a month. This place is totally different and thank goodness for that. The food tastes fresh and it's always hot. The side salad is off the charts, considering the simplicity. I think it's the crunchy noodles on top. :-) I like the hamburger steak, fried okra, chicken fried steak, the burgers and sweet potato fries. The green beans come from a can but that's okay with me. My husband likes most everything and his dad, the fried chicken specials. The service is great and the servers are always nice. I do get nervous because they don't wear masks. There's a sign on the door that says customers must wear one to enter but the staff appears to be exempt. I don't get that but maybe they know something I don't. They have plenty of seating in the back of the place, so don't be hesitant to walk through and make your way over there. My favorite thing on the menu would have to be their Eagle Ford burger. The meat is good and the fries would have to be one of my favorite. The fries and crispy and so fresh! Their ranch is totally addicting and something that keeps me coming to this place. Great service, they were very busy at lunch. The cheeseburger had a great meat to bread ratio (lots of meat - the patty was a good size and was not overwhelmed by the bread), the onion rings were great! Crispy and hot and not greasy. We got a side of fries that were crispy but cold. They immediately took it off our bill and gave them to us to take home and use in air fryer/oven if we wanted. A group of us needed supper near Karnes City and we were directed to Shorty's. First, the new owners are really nice and the waitstaff very accommodating. The calf fries (aka: Ricky Mountain Oysters) were perfectly fried & very tender. Fried pickles were delicious as were the sweetbreads. Their chili is great; almost all beef with a nice amount of heat. With the exception of a well prepared bacon crusted filet mignon, all other steaks were under $20 and the portions are large (everything is larger in TX). All steaks were served salt crusted and prepared to requested temp. We liked the onion rings and French fries, too. The patty melt was a sandwich of perfection. Why 4 stars vs 5? While you are getting a very good steak & a side at a very fair price it's not great aged beef. However, you will get a very tasty meal served by really nice people. They were all very good and severed very hot with cream gravy. Since they were so late coming out our waitress did not charge us for them. We thought that was very nice. We ordered the 16 oz ribeye with a baked potato, veggie of the day which was cabbage and a side salad. Everything was served hot and delicious. They only have wine and beer. I wasn't going to write a review until I read some of the responses from the so called management staff. First off I've seen the owner Walter a few times while dining at his establishment. I never spoke to him personally, but he seemed very pleasant. I went one night with a party of 8 and we were having a great time, but the food was mediocre - veggies from a can and beer was warm, but it was how it was handled and what the crew had as conversation that was the tip of the iceberg. We didn't get a sincere apology for the food/beer mishap, they did fix it however. While dining & walking around looking at the older decor and pictures, we heard an older lady, I think she is the "manager", and a smaller Latina young lady talking about how horrible the owner was and poking fun at the other crew members that I'm sure weren't around. The older lady was talking about how "he" married a kid and had to go get her from another country or something along those lines. Not dinner talk for sure, after some research my sister discovered that the "he" they were referring to was Walter, who married a very young oriental girl and they have a child. No judgement, but your staff bashing you when you're not around and in front of guests probably isn't best for a small business. Other comments were calling someone "crazy", "fat", "lazy" & "stupid". Now to some of the reviews, 30m for a hand crafted burger? I've never been in the restaurant business, but I do know enough to say it's insane to expect people to believe a burger, of any kind, will take 30m to cook. Accept the criticism and move forward, no need for taking it personal. You have a lot to learn about running a customer service business. The other lady had it dead on that veggies were from a can and heated up. Homemade veggies would be a fantastic touch. Although this is 1 out of a couple times visiting you can imagine how this one time out weighs the others. The free ice cream is a nice touch I will say. I probably will never return to this establishment due to the staff, food used to be better and not as expensive. Food came out quick, unfortunately the baked potato was steamed in foil. The Chicken fried steak was small and tough with a soggy breading. The gravy poured over the CFS was watery and ran over the entire plate including my bun that was on the sweet side and not toasted bread as in their picture. Grade A prime red meat at it's best you have to order a steak. Start with an apatizer of fried okera a Lone Star beer. Order a sirloin or ribeye and you can't go wrong. Order a small and be sure to ask for a doggybag with your order because even their small steaks are BIG! Ladies, the chicken breasts are tasty and for those those that are feeling exotic try the frog legs. Baked potatoe, corn, and green beans cooked in bacon are sure to make both Paula Dean and Jimmy Dean proud! Don't forget to save room for desert.
