Came here for the hog butchering class on a Sunday afternoon. I've never seen an entire animal broken down before and as a foodie, this class taught me how the different cuts of meat you see in the grocery store is harvested. Our butcher started with half a Slagel Farm pig and explained what he was doing in every step of the butchering process. He was great at answering questions and made the whole process look super easy. While I'm looking to butcher my own meats anytime soon, the experience was a cool one, especially when he brought out the pig head at the end and carved out the coveted pig cheeks. They provide some tastings of their house made bacon, sausage, meatballs, and bbq pork sliders to showcase what they do with their meats. The food was good but I found the meatballs to be a bit dry and the bacon to be way too salty. Overall, this was a good experience and one I'm glad I took part in. The class runs about $50 which I find to be a bit pricey, but this is an experience or opportunity you would often encounter. This was definitely a great experience, but probably will be a one time experience for me. read more

This is a review for the event venue only. I've been to Chop Shop for the best Sandwich in Chicago Contest and Coffee + Pie Fest. The event space is great from the foyer, to the main room with stage, and multi level upstairs balcony. The bouncers are excellent with crowd control and respectful. They did a great job manning the line wrapping down the block and through the alley for Coffee + Pie fest. Great location to commute to and perfect spot to host your event! read more

ATTN MANAGEMENT: Used to dine here often, probably won't be back for a while because I've frequently seen neglect of enforcing staff to wear masks, specifically in the kitchen area and butcher area. We're in the midst of a pandemic. Everyone in the service industry should be required to wear masks indoors and while working with food. Why would I eat somewhere that the people preparing my food aren't wearing masks? It's common sense. read more

The Butcher's Burger, medium rare, aged cheddar cheese, bacon, charred red onion, is without a doubt the best burger I've ever had. Real quality beef, perfectly seasoned and charred. No bun needed. The fries are perfect with it, and they've got some great beers to go with it (love the dragon's milk stout). I keep coming back. Don't know what else they have. Don't care. read more

A little disappointed with the service: my wife's entree arrived ten minutes before our appetizer, appetizer arrived five before my entree. By the time I ate my entree, her dinner was cold. This review is strictly for the venue/event space. I came here for a fitness workshop, and was wowed when I walked into the Chop Shop's back room. It's a pretty big room with an upstairs (and a patio, though it was fall in Chicago and raining this day). Visiting from San Francisco, we don't see very many spaces like this. Most places are small in The City. The food we had was good, and they also have beer taps if you're looking to stop in for some brews and a sandwich. read more

I recently was working with this venue for one of our events, and it was a nightmare from start to finish. Initially upon signing our event agreement, we were working with a woman named Maria, who was incredibly nice and helpful, however, shortly after signing the agreement and submitting our down deposit, she quit and we were put in touch with a woman named Christal. The first red flag we ran into was that Christal was incredibly condescending and completely lacked any transparency when we asked specific questions about certain fees and costs associated with the venue, saying things like "you'll receive an invoice after the event" without telling us the exact expenses we should expect. This eventually escalated when we were asking for a quote on few optional add ons, and she used this as an opportunity to try tacking on a bunch of additional charges for things that we didn't ask for and that were clearly already included in our rental contract. After this blatant attempt to breach contract, we pushed back and she had the audacity to try and gaslight us and even called us "aggressive". We ultimately decided to back out of our agreement and go with another venue because we were so worried that both our attendees and ourselves would have such a horrible experience. We had a clause that said we could get a full refund on our deposit so long as we notified the venue at least 30 days prior to the event, which we did, and they (unsurprisingly at this point) tried to keep our entire deposit which was a few thousand dollars. We fought them on this as well, and luckily walked away with most, but not all of our deposit. We are a grassroots organization and this was our first year working with a venue of this scale for this particular event, but I have worked as a professional event coordinator for the past several years and have never had such a horrible experience with a venue. I genuinely felt they took the fact that we were a "grassroots" organization as an opportunity to try and exploit us. All in all, my opinion of Christal, and by extension this venue, is that they are devoid of any semblance of integrity and incredibly predatory. read more

I went here for drinks with a friend and the craft cocktails are pretty fabulous. We sat on the roof top patio and drank. I tried four different ones and all of them were great. The art on the walls and the design of the space was really interesting as well. they were completed by a well known Chicago based artist. I met the owner who was a really chill guy and was actually a real person. A must have here are the wings. They could possibly be the best wings I've ever had at a bar. The sauce combined with pumpkin seeds and herbs was one of the best culinary experiences I've had in a bar setting. My friend and I were both in awe. I can almost still taste them as I write this! This is a review of the concert/event space. I came here last week for a Welshly Arms show and honestly didn't know what to expect. I've been to all of the older concerts venues in Chicago so I know what I like and what I don't like and what I won't put up with at all. And wow, was I impressed. The event space is huge and you walk through the bar to get to it. There's a secondary bar right on the exit/entrance to the space that had a cooler of water and cups! I loved that! I get so thirsty at shows usually - combination of dancing around and singing along - so I loved that water was just there for the taking! The stage is small but it's raised enough so the performers are elevated. There wasn't a true barricade - just some stanchions. Which I'm not obsessed with because if the crowd ever gets rowdy, there's nothing for the front row to lean against. But there are pros: at one point one of the bands just dragged them close to the stage so the crowd could get closer. I dig it. My favorite part of the venue is the balcony space. There are entrances on both sides and there's a solid railing to lean on. I loved being able to see the whole show but not be in the crowd. Sometimes you want to be in the pit and sometimes you just want a chill night at a show. I love that there are options! Overall I'm definitely impressed with what Chop Shop has going. There are venues I try to avoid but this one wasn't one. I'm excited to see more shows here! read more

I'm come here now for several different events (woman networking, fashion show, clothing event, concert) and each time I think the space is set up and used wisely. If the event includes food or drink the booths are usually set up along the wall perimeters and the event space also allows servers to walk around with food items. I like you can transform the venue into whatever you want it to be....and oh I can usually find parking which is definitely a plus. read more

Went here yesterday and was sat in the beating sun without any umbrella or cover, after about 30 minutes of waiting they moved us and proceeded to wait another 30 to take the order. I first found a fly in my drink, then what looked like chalk inside my next two glasses. I gave up and moved on to the food which left me up all night with awful stomach pains. I came here my coworker and friends for a party of 6 on a Wednesday night for dinner and drinks. It was relatively crowded for a Wednesday and Chop Shop is known for their meats. We were seated upstairs and it was very cramped. My seat was alongside a rail overlooking the stairs and it was tough to break the seal as everyone had to get up and move to let me out. Ambience was casual and it was pretty loud. They had a stage downstairs for live music so I could see the place being pretty crowded on weekends. We ordered the deviled eggs, oysters, meatballs, and bacon as appetizers. All were okay, but nothing special. I thought the meatballs were a little dry even with the marinara sauce. Oysters were probably the best and not bad for being March in Chicago. Appetizers were the highlight of the night. Things went downhill after we placed our orders for entrees. First of all, it took about an hour to get our food. I didn't mind as we were all cool with catching up and talking and we had no place to be afterwards, but still an hour wait for food. I know it was busy, but come on. Then when our orders came, my duck pastrami reuben was burnt to a crisp. The meat was dry/tough and the bread was hard as a rock and black. I could tell that my sandwich was sitting under the heat lamps for a very long time. The people that I were with were not impressed with their food either. The appetizers were average at best and my sandwich was terrible. They even ran out of Revolution Anti-Hero, but the Founder's Azacca was pretty good. Our waitress took forever to come around and it took an hour for a food. Maybe I just came on a bad night, but this was not a good experience. I will probably not be back. read more

I received a gift certificate to Chop Shop so I went on a Friday night with some friends. The vibe is cool - they have a concert venue in the back, so beware if you are trying to eat and talk when there is a show going on. The food was pretty good - we had a meat & cheese board to share and then steak, steak frits, and the duck pastrami sandwich. All of the food was good, but I found it a little odd the waitress didn't really know anything about meat - as this is supposed to be somewhere they cure their own meat. For the price and the quality of the food, I don't think I would go back for dinner, but I would go for lunch or get meat to take home. read more

In addition to Double Door, Concord and Subterranean, there's a new music venue in the area. I got to check the place out and was impressed. The venue is located at the back of Chop Shop so there's a lot more things going on than just music. Chop Shop is a meat market, deli, and restaurant. Their bar has great choices of beers, whiskeys and mixed drinks. The regular menu was available plus they had a small bites menu to accompany drinking. The signature burger seemed to be a popular choice. It is $15 and probably one of the best in the city. The space is high but the sound was good. I went for a punk rock show which probably should best be seen in a less luxurious environment. But we're all getting old and deserve some comfort and the venue delivers with great meat, alcohol and music. What more does anyone need? read more

The cheese and meat platter was yummy and the new fall drinks were tasty! One had a toasted marshmallow. Yum. We made our own meat and cheese plate and it was good. I thought the portions were small. I had the meatballs and the ricotta gnocchi. Both good but not memorable. We finished dinner off with the pumpkin and chocolate cannolis. I have had better. Overall our service was excellent. I have been here a few times now and really enjoyed it both times. Both times were on Wednesdays because they have the best deal on fresh oysters on Wednesdays. They have other great deals during the week, but again I love oysters. So I have come both times and ordered the one dollar oysters and this time also ordered a bottle of wine because it was half off. Each time I have ordered the oysters they have been fresh and absolutely delicious. They are cleaned well and never really have any sediment in it. I have also ordered the veggie burger and this time I ordered a cheeseburger (not pictured). The food is always very fresh and the bartenders/servers are always very friendly. The meat quality is very good as it is a butcher. The location is very convenient as it is just off the blue line. If you are looking for a nice happy hour during the week I would recommend coming here. read more

I've been to an event at the Chop Shop so when we needed a recharge, I remembered this place and stopped in. We ordered hummus and veggie and meatballs for the table and they were both delicious! Dude. Best outdoor joint in wicker park! Lots of room, comfortable seating, far enough from the train to minimize the noise. On a nice day, this is the best in this area. Service is good and fast. Food is very good- try the oysters and or sirasha chk burger. Best chk burger I've ever had. Pink with sirasha in the middle and very juicy. Have the maple carrots with them. Veggie burger is quite good too made with black beans and quinoa. Very smokey and good. Best veggie burger I've ever had. I'm come out and hang out here again for sure. read more

What a fun spot. Again, I am not a local so can only comment on what we tasted as part of our Food Walking tour - Sidewalk Food Tours of Chicago. Decor was lovely. The meatballs were heaven and I loved the homemade Giardiniera. Really interesting concept where the restaurant also has a meat counter, sandwich station, and picnic items like cheese, charcuterie, and salads you can take on the go. I have driven by this place dozens of times, but because I am not a big red meat guy, I never went in. I decided to try it last night and was very impressed. The salmon and mashed potatoes were delicious, and Whitney is an engaging and attentive server/bartender who makes a mean mescal old fashioned. My only criticism of Chop Shop is the godawful stools in the upstairs bar which are about as uncomfortable as seats could be. I will definitely go back, but maybe with a foam stadium cushion. :-) read more

I'm obsessed with shishito peppers ever since I had them at Gjelina in Venice. They are usually roasted and tossed in some kind of acid, but last night I had the most well seasoned well balanced shishito pepper dish I have ever had, and it was fried. Accompanied by some kind of sesame siracha aoli. These are truly addictive and so is this place. A deli up front with a substantial fast casual menu, a small eatery next to a large bar (that doesn't stock amaretto, um what kind of bar doesn't have amaretto?) that then connects to a good size venue. We got to see Escort perform, one of our favorite bands. The food is good, the service is meh, but the concept of the space and everything you can do there in a single evening makes it a win for Wicker Park. read more

I've had a mixed bag of experiences here, but the last one left me frustrated. I guess I can sum it up by saying, our steaks weren't good. Mine was covered in SO MUCH chimchurri...I found it to be inedible, because the flavor was so strong. My husband had the steak that came with bone marrow, and they mixed up our preparations, so his steak was no where near the medium rare he asked for. I've had other things before that were fine, like the gnocchi. I just feel like this place either needs to be a bacchi burger joint, or a steak house. But what they are doing right now doesn't work for me. For $100, the only thing we actually enjoyed were the mashed potatoes, this time around. We came to Chop Shop because we desperately wanted steak close to home. I wish WP had a solid steak house option, but I'll probably stick to Chop Shop for burgers/sandwiches and head downtown when I want a steak. read more

I paid how much for this beet Salad? $16!!! Not worth the price tag. Barely any beets, chicken is extra, and there's barely any of that either. Here is what we had: App: Sausage and peppers. Lady: Burger and green beans. Me: Pork chop. So here are the lady friends word... Here is how I rank the three I ate. Burger, beans, then sausage. Sausage was a bit seedy. Very flavorful and robust, but maybe a tad too much of something in the sausage. Beans were great, but the burger I couldn't put down. Normally I only eat half of the bun but I had to make an exception. Pedro ordered the pork chop. I think this is the first pork chop he's ever ordered at a restaurant. Bone in, no sides, but he didn't seem to mind. Loved the pork. Roof deck provided great ambience was very clean. We will definitely be coming back here. As an added bonus. Wednesday is $5 wine night. We loved our dinner at the Chop House. The restaurant is in an interesting neighborhood with plenty to see on the street. There's a butcher / deli counter when you first walk in, where you can check out the different meats and cheeses available. The restaurant says they butcher everything on site. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. I recommend eating al fresco on the second floor patio, which is cozy and softly lit at night, with rough brick walls providing an urban backdrop for your meal. The cocktails are great. I loved Marietti's Manhattan, which came with a real black cherry garnish. I also had some kind of rhubarb drink which was very good. Five stars for originality. The food was very good. I had an heirloom tomato and watermelon salad (not on the menu) that was bursting with basil goodness. I decided to graze on sausages and cheeses from the charcuterie, and loved everything I tried. My companion had a "baseball cut" steak (filet, I think - not on the menu). It was tender, juicy and well seasoned. Only complaint is that the chef seems to have only one setting for cooking steaks, which is medium rare. I love medium rare, but my companion doesn't. Our server quickly offered to have the chef re-cook it, to medium as requested, nd even brought back a new steak, but it was cooked exactly the same way. This is going to be a combo review for both the event space and the butcher shop. The lady and I were looking at the event space and since it was near lunch time, we ordered some sandwiches. We had a tour scheduled and Sarah was awesome. She showed us around and was super great with giving us tips and was really enthusiastic about the event. She definitely was a great combination of helpful and laid back that put the event space as in the plus column. The shop was just opening up but thanks again to Sarah we were the first customers there and the guys behind the butcher bar were awesome. On her recommendation I got the spicy Italian and I assumed the lady would like the hot turkey sandwich and when he asked if I'd liked anything else went yes-even though I'm sure it would be an extra one. He recommended the Porchetta. All the sandwiches were good but the best one by far was the Spicy Italian. The turkey was good but the gravy/provolone needed something extra. I had to share my sandwich but then we had the Porchetta which was a little on the sweeter side but still good. If I'm back in town I'll be sure to visit again because their sandwiches are great and I love seeing perfectly cut and trimmed meat just on display everywhere read more

We hosted a post-wedding brunch at Chop Shop in July 2018. We were looking for an affordable option in the Wicker Park or Logan Square area, and Chop Shop won based on the menu offerings and general vibes. We rented out the second floor, which is a medium sized space with its own bar and dedicated outdoor patio (although it was a little too hot to have a lot of guests outside on the particular date). Chop Shop was very accommodating and prompt with communications - they were usually the ones reaching out to follow up when we were slow to respond. The only complaint we had about the entire experience was that they were a little slow to refill the buffet trays after the first round went pretty fast once guests arrived. But once they caught up after that first round, all was good. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a venue space in the Wicker Park area, or a venue that is transit accessible. read more

Just had a surprise birthday for my husband at Chop Shop and it was a success! Working with Elizabeth and Mario was such a fun, smooth and easy experience. I heard that they did butcher classes once a month, but that date didn't fall on my husband's birthday, so I was hoping we could work something out. Of course they worked with me, came up with a rate and reserved a lovely space upstairs for us. They had a bartender upstairs just for our party (cash bar), so everyone was able to get whatever they wanted. Costa was the butcher that led the class and he was charming, funny and very knowledgeable. My husband was surprised and extremely happy with how everything turned out. Food was also great.
