I ended up getting the two spam musubi meal and they were sooo good. Paid around $9.50 and it was worth it. Service was excellent and the server was so friendly. My food came out within 8 minutes, hot and fresh and so flavorful! I usually don't like pineapple on anything salty, but glad I went with this option as it added just enough sweetness to the musubi. I've been going to the original Chopstix location for years, so I had high expectations when a friend and I decided to try Chopstix #2 in Mira Mesa. I ordered the Japanese curry, but unfortunately it didn't compare to the original location. The curry tasted more like a boxed, store-bought version and reminded me of a fast-food Japanese curry. It was edible, but nothing memorable, and I left a little disappointed. One nice touch is that the curry comes with a small salad and a bowl of miso soup. We also ordered the Mira Mesa Roll. The roll itself was decent, but the eel sauce was a little too sweet for our taste. We considered ordering appetizers, including the garlic edamame, but many of the appetizer prices seemed higher than expected, so we decided to skip them. Looking back, I'm glad we did since our entrees were just okay--not bad, but not something we'd go out of our way for again. The service was pleasant. The older ladies serving us were kind and welcoming, which we appreciated. The only other downside was that the restaurant felt quite warm inside. It didn't seem like the air conditioning was running, so it was a bit uncomfortable while eating. Overall, this location was average for us. Have passed by here a lot and just decided to eat here on a Saturday evening. Restaurant doesn't have a lot of seating, but it wasn't busy when we got there and so we were seated right away. Staff is generally very attentive. Menu is pretty wide ranging but we settled on a simple chicken teri bento, and mabo and curry with an added tonkatsu. Everything overall tasted very good and was presented hot (of course). Tonkatsu (as well as tempura from the bento) were simply breaded and fried, so no additional flavor from them. Curry and mabo were a good consistency and satisfied the craving well. Will come here again to try other dishes. Place is quaint and different than the surrounding Asian restaurants so it offers a good variety to stay unique in this immediate vicinity. read more

Hidden gem in a busy Mira mesa shopping plaza. I would give it a solid 4.5 leaning more towards the 5 on this one. Although it is small, the service was amazing and the food quality and portions were both generous and delicious. The restaurant was very clean, organized and had nice music playing which was not too loud. We ordered the wango mango roll to start and it didn't disappoint. For the mains we ordered the wonton chicken soup with ramen noodles, tonkotsu broth. The broth was extremely flavorful and the chicken was tender. The second dish was the chicken katsu bowl which was also cooked perfectly and rich with flavors. I would highly recommend trying them if you have not been there. I've been to the Convoy location before, so I was curious to see how the Mira Mesa location compared. We stopped by around 7 PM and it wasn't too busy. There was plenty of seating available, although the Convoy location definitely feels larger and has more tables. The menus are pretty similar between the two locations, but there are a few differences. One thing I immediately noticed was that the Calamari Roll, which I usually order in Convoy, wasn't on the menu here. For this visit, we ordered the Cream Cheese Wontons, the Hamachi Roll, and the Godzilla Roll. Service was okay. Nothing bad, but nothing particularly memorable either. I felt a little rushed when we were looking through the menu since there are a lot of options to choose from. Once we ordered, they checked in on us throughout the meal and everything came out in a reasonable amount of time. The Cream Cheese Wontons were exactly what I wanted them to be. Crispy, golden brown, and filled with a good amount of cream cheese. They came with a sweet chili sauce for dipping. The Hamachi Roll was probably my favorite thing we ordered. It comes with yellowtail and had generous pieces both on top and inside the roll. What I appreciated most was how balanced it felt. There wasn't an overwhelming amount of rice and the fish was really allowed to shine. Every bite tasted fresh and the flavors worked really well together. The Godzilla Roll was just okay for me. It's a deep-fried roll with spicy tuna, cream cheese, avocado, crab, and eel sauce. I think this comes down more to personal preference than anything. I'm generally not a huge fan of fried sushi rolls, so it didn't really stand out to me the way the Hamachi Roll did. If you enjoy fried rolls, you'll probably like it more than I did. It was a solid dinner. Nothing completely blew me away, but the food was good, the prices were reasonable, and we spent around $40 for everything we ordered. read more

I got the bulgogi bento and the bulgogi was a bit too tough. Good flavor though. The tempura was a bit too oily for my taste but not bad. The tempura sauce could have a bit more saltiness to it. Sushi night! We are trying a local spot that is new to us tonight since it was close by and I came along this spot which was very close by and had a variety of menu items that looked great. We ended up going with just sushi this night because that's what I was craving before I noticed that they have a wide variety of menu items as well as sushi. We of course over ordered with 4 different rolls as well as a miso soup and edamame and everything was so good and super fresh! Chopstix 2 is an off shoot of the OG location in the Convoy District. They replaced another longtime sushi eatery in this plaza anchored by H Mart. Because of the large number of neighboring businesses and the fact that I visited during peak dinner hours, I had to circle the plaza lot twice before I was able to find an open parking space. The inside of the suite was rather compact, yet it could seat about 40 customers. The dining area was about 3/4 full when I arrived. The multi-page menu booklet featured Japanese comfort food with dry and wet style noodles, rice bowls, and sushi rolls as some of the categories. From the list of special sushi rolls, I began my meal with an Ex-Girlfriend Roll which was rice-less. Imitation crab, avocado, and spicy tuna were the inside ingredients of the roll that was topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and soy mustard sauce. It tasted rather sweet, however it only came as five pieces when I had expected at least six. The other item I selected was the Curry Rice with Chicken Katsu as a protein (+$4). This dish was beef-flavored Japanese curry served with white rice, miso soup, and a small salad. There were four pieces of deep-fried breaded chicken placed next to the rice on the plate. The chicken was reasonably crispy while the brown curry was mildly spicy. It was a hearty entree that would have been even better on a cold evening which it was not. The service and the check-out process were both efficient. For the price and quantity of my food, I gave a four star rating for my dining experience at Chopstix 2 in Mira Mesa. read more

Welcome to Mira Mesa! The restaurant is located in the H Mart shopping complex between H Mart and In N Out so depending what time of the day you come, could be a busy area to park. Ambiance was casual, servers were bustling but friendly. They have a good selection on their menu with a lot of variety - choose your own Soup, noodles, salad, sushi. We ordered the Salmon Bento Box and Korean Shortribs Bento Box. Delicious and hit the spot. The salmon size was a little on the small side but the Bento box also comes with rice, miso soup, salad and tempura so overall that combination was filling. We also ordered the Awesome roll which consists of shrimp tempura, imitation crab, and avocado topped with salmon, eel sauce and baked and it sure lived to its name! First time trying this restaurant so we ordered to go for Friday night's dinner. Parking gets chaotic in this site since H-Mart and other restaurants are there. We pre-ordered tofu appetizers, Chicken Katsudon and Ramen. Food was pretty good and my husband really liked the ramen. The Chicken Katsudon came with salad and was flavorful but wished it was more crispy. Maybe the sauce made it soggy but again it was still good, especially the scrambled egg and sauce. The serving was huge and I ate the dish for 2 days. The tofu was also delicious but didn't come with a dipping sauce so I had to use the salad dressing to dip the tofu in. I'd say the sushi is average overall and a good value for the price. I also ordered the beef teriyaki, which I would not recommend. The meat lacked flavor, tasted mostly like sweet teriyaki sauce, and was very chewy. Unfortunately, it was difficult to enjoy. The staff were very friendly and provided great service. Chopstix 2 is located in Mira Mesa specifically on Mira Mesa Blvd. in the H Mart outdoor shopping center. This shopping center is jam packed on the weekend, so parking might be tough close to the restaurant, but there is plenty of parking. Besides H Mart, this center has In n Out, Applebee's, Daiso, El Patron, and Chopstix is next to Yin Tang Spicy Hot Pot. Once you step inside, you'll be greeted by a cute mural of artist rendered fish, a cubby hole bookcase housing succulents, and colorful mounted pics of flowers. Management makes good use of its space with booth and table seating. The distressed walls, decorative lighting, and color scheme made for a classy appearance. The waitresses provided good customer service. Chopstix 2 specializes in Japanese food, so if you're a fan of miso soup, bento boxes, and sushi, I believe you'll enjoy their menu. When I asked our waitress what she would recommend from the menu that serves plenty of food, she said the bento boxes. Take it from this foodie, definitely order a bento box. For my bento box, I ordered the chicken katsu bento box with the katsu being breaded, deep-fried, and it's served with tonkatsu sauce. The bento boxes are served with miso soup, salad, tempura, 4 pieces of California Roll sushi, and white rice. Everything in that box was fresh, tasty, and satisfying. The chicken katsu was cooked perfectly and ate well with the rice after dipping it in the accompanying sauce. For our appetizers, we ordered the gyoza and the crispy rice. The gyoza came out what seemed like straight from the deep fryer and it was a delish starter before our entrees. The crispy rice was really tasty with it being topped with spicy tuna, avocado, eel sauce, and spicy mayo. We each had one, but I could have had another. Now I understand why my BFFL spoke glowingly about Chopstix 2 because now I'm a fan. If you're looking for a Japanese fast casual restaurant that serves yummy and fresh tasting food, has a cute vibe, and has good customer service, definitely give them a try. read more

Since the closure of Todo Sushi, I have been searching for a quality yet reasonably priced sushi restaurant. Unfortunately, this establishment did not meet my expectations. Great to have alternatives when the local restaurants get busy. We've been here twice as I like to give places a legit shot. Food was not bad, just average. - Beef Bulgogi: the beef was chewy and had hard pieces in it. Once we did, no apologies. It was almost as if we inconvenience her. To add insult to injury, she loudly said, "sorry we're closed" twice from the register. We thought she was talking to guests attempting to come in because there were people outside. We were sitting at the table all the way at the opposite end near the door. I did look up and saw her just staring down at receipts from across the room. We then smelled the heavy usage of beach and she said loudly again, "sorry, we are closed" from the register again. I asked my husband if he thought she was directing that at us, he said no. I told him maybe we should go home to finish our food as I couldn't handle the smell of beach and I didn't want our two children under the age of 2 smelling it. So I stood up intending to get togo boxes and she said it again. First of all, we came 2 hours before closing. The food came out very slow and we didn't have anything to eat the food with until a while later. If you didn't want to serve us, please say so. We would have understood and ate elsewhere. Second, we didn't know you were trying to direct the message towards us. You were across the room and made no eye contact. At the very least, you knew our food just came out... maybe bring over the togo boxes. Would we come back again? Not to dine, that's for sure. read more

I'm so happy they opened a 2nd location closer to me. Chopstix in Convoy was the OG ramen and Isakaya place for me when I first moved to San Diego. I used to always go there for ramen because there weren't many ramen places around. I loved the variety on their menu too and the prices were always very reasonable with generous portions. Now they've opened a 2nd location next to Hmart in Mira Mesa. The food here tasted very similar. We ordered the agedashi tofu, vegetable chicken ramen, a poki roll, bento box with teriyaki chicken, and the sushi combo B. Everything was delicious. Sushi was fresh. Prices are comparable and they have lunch specials which gives even more value to the meals. The portions are generous too. We had left overs which we took home. Service was great . The staff was very friendly and checked on us very often. When our server heard it was my friend's birthday, she gave her a cute ice cream. I ordered the Champon seafood noodle soup, and my husband ordered the Nabeyaki Soba. Both dishes were terrible. The noodles were mushy, and the broth tasted worse than packaged instant noodles. Both dishes had almost no flavor except onion flavor. The Champon was especially bland and disappointing. I honestly feel cheated. Would you personally pay money for the food you just served us? If you cannot proudly eat the food you sell to customers, then you should reconsider staying open. Please don't trick customers into paying high prices for food that is not enjoyable. Your restaurant advertises "Japanese noodles," but there was no authentic Japanese or Korean flavor in either dish. I understand that many Japanese restaurants are Korean-owned, and that is completely fine, but the food should still have proper flavor and quality. Champon is a well-known Korean-style noodle dish, yet this version had no depth or character at all. Everything is getting more expensive, and eating out is not cheap. We all work hard to earn our money, and customers deserve food that matches the price they pay. Instead, it feels like you simply took our money and served us poor-quality food.
