    Gato Special Roll
    Ashleyann B.

My partner and I enjoyed interacting with Hiro at his previous place of work--so much so that we drove to visit him for dinner at his new place of work: Sushi Gato. At the sushi bar, Hiro gave us delicious recommendations that we thoroughly enjoyed: nodoguro (sea perch), king salmon belly, and the gato special roll with the A5 wagyu from Kagoshima. We also enjoyed the amaebi (sweet shrimp--raw and fried), kinmedai (golden eye snapper), and the beef teriyaki bento box. Can't praise the nigiri and sushi roll enough! We especially loved the nodoguro that Hiro prepared. In addition to the sushi selection, there are a lot of options on the regular menu to choose from too. The staff here is very friendly and attentive and made our experience here more delightful. and, true to the name, [[HIGHLIGHT]]there is nice decor that nods to the restaurant's name.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We are looking forward to our next meals here at Sushi Gato and visiting Hiro again!

Food was amazing!!! Service was great. Our sushi chef, Hiro, was so entertaining. We had Gato Special Roll that was the best roll I've had. It's like having a surf and turf. It's a must have when you come here. We also had the Truffle yellowtail roll that was very different and awesome. The Signature Aburi Salmon Roll was amazing as well. These rolls were very different than most sushi places and definately stand out. The miso soup was very good. The yellow tail and salmon nigiri was extremely fresh. Will definitely come back and try more things.

My daughter and I came here for dinner on the eve of Mother's Day and were very impressed with the quality of the sushi here. See, this is one reason why I like to explore new restaurants all the time. Had we not ventured out to new sushi restaurants, we would've never come across this one, and that would've been a real shame. For our visit, we ordered the following: - Hamachi/Salmon Jalapeno Plate - Salmon Belly Sashimi x2 - Hot Kiss Roll - Lemon Roll We absolutely loved everything, but what really stood out were the thick cuts of salmon belly sashimi. This alone was enough to make this our new go-to sushi spot! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service was nice and quick, ambiance was inviting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Great parking. Amazing sushi! We'll be back soon!!

Excellent experience all around! Really fresh and delicious sushi and incredible beef yakisoba. Loved the ginger here too. Top quality ingredients and great flavor. Centrally located and lots of parking. Would highly recommend.

Although there is very stiff competition in the county, Sushi Gato is my favorite Sushi location in the area. The dishes are always delicious with fresh ingredients and beautiful presentation. The prices are reasonable and the service is first class. Today we had a light lunch with Seaweed Salad, Chicken Karaage, Salmon Roll, and Garlic Albacore roll!! Wow!!! Perfect!

Sushi Gato is one of many sushi spots in the area, glad we chose this spot. We started with the mixed tempura, which was light and crispy; perfect for sharing since the portion isn't as large as at other locations. For sushi rolls, the Lemon Roll with extra lemon on the side was very fresh. The citrus really elevated the fish and gave it a clean, refreshing flavor. The Philadelphia Roll was classic with high quality cream cheese (you can tell the difference) and well balanced, and the Crazy Dragon Roll was fresh and crunchy with cucumber. Service was friendly and consistent, the food came out quickly, and everything tasted fresh and well prepared. Definitely a sushi spot we'll come back to when craving quality sushi. Highly recommend!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice and beautiful Japanese restaurant. It has a sushi bar and a large dinning area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We came on a Saturday for lunch, but they don't have lunch menu. We ordered two of their bento boxes. They are okay. I was hoping for some California rolls in the bento, but they have the entree, salad, and some tempura. It's overall okay for the price. The miso black cod was quite salty and hard to taste the miso flavor. The pork cutlet was very dry. Tempura was good, but nothing too special. For the bento boxes, we think it's 3 star. They may have good sushi rolls, but we didn't order it. If we come back, I would recommend sushi and not their bento box.

Good sushi. Fresh. The cucumber salad isn't really a salad. It looks more like a caterpillar. Our order took longer than expected and they gave us free Edamame. I had the lemon roll. The green tea cheesecake is still on the menu but they don't have it anymore. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was seated by a double door that two people passed thru while I was dining....was disruptive. We h[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]ad several servers which was confusing. Will go back simply because the food was good.

Purrfect night at @sushigato.sd Nigiri Paradise--toro, tuna, yellowtail, salmon, kanpachi, scallop, albacore, shrimp, white fish, and madai--plus tempura, karaage, lemon roll, yuzu cucumbers, and green tea ice cream. I'm soy obsessed.

    Truffle Yellowtail Roll

We ordered the agedashi tofu, tuna handtoll, truffle yellowtail handroll, miso black cod bento, and tempura udon. Overall everything was presented beautifully and restaurant is a solid option for lunch. Tuna handroll- thick slice of fresh fish, warm sushi rice. Tempura udon- a reliable dish taken up a notch. There are small bits of japanese vegetables such as chrysanthemum greens and mushroom, which I appreciate. Battered shrimp and vegetables are good, though personally, I prefer an even lighter batter. Miso black cod bento- this was a unique option that I haven't seen in many other japanese restaurants Agedashi tofu- somehow arrived at the table last? They did separate the ponzu from the tofu to keep it nice a crispy for those who like it that way. For me, I prefer bigger tofu pieces and allowing the ponzu to soak and soften it. Truffle yellowtail roll- truffle was not too overpowering. One thing that was unexpected is that the yellowtail is chopped up and not in slices. As a texture eater, I would have enjoyed it more if the fish was in slices. Service- wait staff was very nice and attentive Atmosphere- spacious and modern. Love the cat decor. Quiet atmosphere. The other table ordered some intriguing rice-less sushi rolls. Looks pretty, will definitely come back to try different things.

My friends and I tried this restaurant before we went to the movies! There is plenty of free parking in the lot. We were seated right away. The food was pretty decent, but very expensive for the quality. Service was great though! Likely wouldn't come back as there is better quality sushi for a better price. House salad: (1/5) The dressing was horrible. We couldn't even take more than one bite. French fries: (5/5) Surprisingly these were delicious! They gave complimentary fries on New Year's Day! It was very generous. Garlic edamame: (5/5) Delicious! They were cooked perfectly and the sauce was yummy. Salmon belly sashimi: (4/5) Pretty good, tasted fresh and you get good sized piece. Salmon hand roll: (4/5) Simple, but good. Again, good amount of salmon in the roll. Chopped toro? (2/5) I don't remember the name, but the consistency threw me off. I wouldn't order that again. Marinated blue fin nigiri: (4/5) This was tasty, but pricey for one piece. Pink roll: (3/5) It has salmon and tuna which we all love, but the sauce on the roll really ruined the flavor. Wouldn't order again. Philadelphia roll: (3/5) Again, the sauce on top ruins the flavor of what should be a simple roll.

What can I say? After living in Japan over 5 years Sushi Gato comes extremely close to authentic Japanese food. Everything we had was delicious. The only problem would be parking in that mall. It's not the restaurants fault and it was crazy two days before Thanksgiving. I have detailed Everything in my pictures, but I will talk about the highlights. The truffle and garlic edamame was unique and a different take on the way other restaurants serve it. We ate that appetizer in record time! I loved the uni and wished there were two pieces as it was just amazing. They had a wild aji which I tried and it was the best I have ever eaten. I had watched a woman have the whole aji fish as sushi and then they fry the bones. I wanted to try that, but the waitress misunderstood what we wanted. I have eaten aji this way in Japan years ago and love it this way. Next time. It was very expensive, but the quality was worth the price. I can see us going back on special occasions. I would suggest calling ahead and reserving a table.

The chef's choice was beautiful and tasted great! I'm not an uni fan, but this Santa Barbara urchin was amazing, subtly sea salty and no odd taste that I usually get. The place doesn't get super loud even with all the tables. We also ordered dessert of a matcha basque cheesecake and 2 yuzu ice cream. If you love yuzu like me, you'll love it! Definitely a restaurant I would return for some good Japanese food. O Toro and Yellowtail Belly sushi were simply mouth watering. The way both fish just melts in your mouth and the proportion of rice to fish being just right makes a difference so that it gives you the perfect sushi experience. Shrimp Tempura was tasty. Not overly oily and a nice layer of tempura that wasn't thick. But the best is the shrimp! Definitely didn't taste like those frozen ones and the quality of the shrimp (size, texture, and tasty) was delicious. My son ate 2 out of 3 on his own - and he's very picky with shrimp tempura. Ota B was yummy! It was such a balanced meal of flavor, texture and variety. Even the rice itself was good, I kid you not! Definitely a good value to have if you're there. Our kids didn't want anything else but ended up eating two bowls of just udon. All because it was good udon. What can improve (hence the -1 star) is the service. The server wasn't friendly to begin with, probably because we have two young kids in a nice Japanese restaurant, and perhaps because we didn't order too much since we had a delayed lunch but had this place reserved for dinner already.

Our server was phenomenal and really elevated the experience. She gave great recommendations and even let us sample both the Cabernet and Merlot when we couldn't decide on a bottle of wine. We ordered a variety of dishes: * Spicy Edamame: very flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side so be warned if you're sensitive to heat. * Fire Fire Roll: light and fresh fish, but the seared salmon flavor didn't really stand out. * Orange Roll: also light and fresh, but I didn't really pick up the citrus/lemon zest element. A bit underwhelming compared to expectations. * Salmon Belly Nigiri: very fresh and a favorite at the table. * Crab Roll Special: generous portion of fresh crab. * Yuzu Cheesecake: served with three spoons to share. It tasted like a classic cheesecake, pleasant, but I didn't really get a distinct yuzu flavor. The space is cute and conveniently located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Overall, the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. While the rolls themselves are fairly simple and not especially standout, everything tasted fresh and the service was excellent, which made the experience enjoyable.

Everything was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. All of the fish is high-quality, and most of it is imported from Japan. They do also source fantastic shrimp and uni from San Diego at times. Both sushi chefs are super personable, very skilled, and they have rad knife skills! Service from the waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is diminutive and consists primarily of the sushi bar with 10 seats and an attached patio dining area. They do have a small parking lot which is appreciated! The pacing was just right, and each course was presented simply yet beautifully. I truly enjoyed this experience and give it my highest possible accolades! I loved that we were able to taste test three different sakes before choosing, and the carafe of sake was perfect for two of us to enjoy with our meal. It was also fun to choose our own special sake cup/glass from Ichifuji's eclectic collection for the evening I truly enjoyed all of the 19!! courses but the chilled chawanmushi, king salmon & all the nigiri were my favorites. When you come to Ichifuji, know that you are getting a very authentic Japanese dining experience. This is the real deal! Another fun thing that Ichifuji does is they give you a punchcard, and once you've tried all four seasonal menus, you will receive a special gift from Japan. Arigato gozaimasu!

All delicious and wish I could've gotten seconds! - Sashimi: Chef's selection of 4 different sashimi with a side of seaweed. I enjoyed them all but my favorite are the toro and amaebi. Love that they also fried the shrimp head and gave us a choice of salt & lemon or ponzu sauce to pair with it! - Yakimono: Grilled cod with asparagus, crispy fried lotus root, and goji berries. The cod was so buttery and cooked to perfection. - Nigiri: 9 piece nigiri chef's selection. All were super fresh, melts in your mouth, and of course delicious! - Uni wrap: I'm not sure if this was part of the nigiri or its own course, but chef let us try San Diego Uni & Hokkaido Uni! Both incredibly yummy. I feel like the SD Uni has a nice sweetness while the Hokkaido Uni has a slight bitterness. My group mostly liked the Hokkaido Uni. - Chawanmushi: Very flavorful and silky as I think they added dashi to enhance the egg. - Soup: Red miso clam soup (Nagoya style) was delicious. Super comforting and savory to end the course out before dessert. - Dessert: Hojicha Panna Cotta with strawberries! I usually don't like the desserts at most omakases, but I loved this! Great balance of light sweetness of the Panna Cotta with the sweet and acidity from the strawberries. [Service] - Friendly, charming, attentive, helpful - Shoutout to our Chef, Hiro-San & server Ken-San for making sure our experience was beyond amazing! Thank you! [Ambiance] - Classy, upscale, intimate - Has sushi bar & patio seating [Overall] - Made reservations for a party of 6 for my bf's bday and they definitely made it special! I love that they took pics for us with the chefs and even gave us a print out with a stand. So cute! - Would definitely come back for the food, vibes, and great service! - Each season they have a different menu, if you had all 4 on your stamp card, you'd receive a little gift! I definitely would love to try all 4 seasons but unfortunately I don't live around the area.

There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

Staff were exceptionally warm and friendly, making us feel like regulars. Being a nigiri guy, I'm particular about my sushi, but theirs was solid. The fish was fresh, cut to perfection, and tasted incredible. My wife ordered a few of their specialty rolls. I'm normally not a roll guy, but I ended up stealing bites because they just hit. I believe he was the head chef, but Anthony, was super cool, personable, and talented. You can tell he takes a lot of pride in his craft, and it really shows on the plate. If you are looking for a solid sushi joint, a great neighborhood vibe, and stellar hospitality, you have to check this place out!

Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.

We ordered the miso soup, spicy edamame, Den Miso pork belly skewers, tamarindo tuna ceviche, seabass serrano, crispy karikari tuna, and mochi ice cream for dessert. To drink, we had the Taiyo Margarita and the Clouds of Matcha cocktail. The spicy edamame was probably the only dish that fell a little short for us. It wasn't bad by any means, but we were hoping for more flavor. The absolute standout was the Den Miso pork belly skewers. My husband and I both took our first bite at the same time, looked at each other, and immediately said, "Oh!" We were genuinely surprised by how juicy, tender, and flavorful they were. There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Between the rooftop ambiance, attentive service, and several delicious dishes - especially those unforgettable pork belly skewers - we'd definitely come back and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great dinner spot in the Gaslamp.

As you get to view the roof top, there are lots of tables, a strategically placed bar, some fireplace tables, comfortable seating, a live DJ, and beautifully done murals and deco. Very tasteful! Prices is a little high but keep in mind that you're also paying for the experience! The staff were all friendly and our host Becky was so sweet and attentive!
