My son and I came here for lunch and left feeling underwhelmed. We ordered the spicy tuna on crispy rice, three sushi rolls (including the El Diablo roll), a Diet Coke, and a soda water. Our total came to $99 including tip, which felt expensive for what we received. The food was fine, but not memorable. The spicy tuna on crispy rice was probably the highlight of the meal, but overall the sushi didn't stand out enough to justify the price. I also found the menu both diverse and oddly limited. They offer bento boxes, udon, sushi, and sashimi, but there wasn't an option to order tempura à la carte or even as its own entrée. The only way to get tempura appeared to be by ordering an udon dish, which was disappointing. The biggest letdown was the El Diablo roll. Despite being described as spicy, I didn't find it spicy at all, and the flavors fell flat. The service was pleasant, and there wasn't anything objectively wrong with the experience. It just didn't leave me feeling like it was worth nearly $100 for lunch. I wouldn't return, especially with so many other sushi restaurants in San Diego offering better value and more memorable food. read more

Had a late lunch here today for the first time (1 p.m.). My friend & I were seated immediately and we each ordered a sushi roll. I had the "Mr. Potato Head" and my friend had the "Crunchy Roll." Both were delicious! We tried each other's rolls and liked them, too. I'm definitely eating there, again! Service was very fast and the place was clean. The wait staff was friendly, too; we felt welcome. There was only one downside - and it's not a huge deal, but the young man who seated us and was also our server wore a very heavy, unappealing cologne. I was grateful that I wasn't any closer to him when he was near us! I'm hoping someone advises him to wear a lot less or none at all. There is a parking lot for the restaurant. They have indoor seating. Fairly small restaurant but we didn't have to wait for seating. I tried the fish of the day, salmon bento with ponzu sauce, seafood udon and spicy tuna roll. Everything tastes great. The fish of the day was so fresh and the texture of the fish was perfect. Got here just in time for happy hour and this place far exceeded expectations. The stuffed inari with spicy scallop was amazing. My partner said the nigiri were great with a lot of new twists to the classics she usually gets. The hand rolls were also solid. Dear diary, Made a stop here for a quick snack but ended up with a better experience than I thought. The atmosphere is more on the homey and cozy side where there are bar and table seatings. There are also plenty of parking so it wasn't stressful. The staff were very attentive and friendly answering all the questions we have and provided us with exceptional recommendations so don't be afraid to ask. The bento box is a great option. The vegetable tempura is great! Many different vegetables. Lightly breaded and fried perfectly. The tofu katsu was good. The chicken katsu was a bit dry. We ordered mostly from the happy hour menu today. We ordered the spicy tuna hand roll, yuzu salmon sashimi, blackened albacore tataki with spicy garlic ponzu, spyder roll, chronic roll and rainbow roll. All very fresh! I stopped by for dinner and was seated right away. It's not a huge place, so if it's busy or you have a big group, you might have to wait a bit. They don't have a waiting area either. Kappa Sushi has an open vibe with a lively feel and little tchotchkes decorated around that add to the authentic atmosphere. Nestled in a cute shopping center, this spot is a hidden gem. Every dish we tried was fresh and tasted good. The standout for me was the lightly breaded crunchy roll included in my lunch combo. It was perfectly crispy and shrimp-ly delicious! The fried rice with sesame seeds was also a nice accompaniment to our meal. Our waitress, Devon, was also super friendly and patient with us as and made our experience as smooth as the salmon on our nigiri! My first experience with pickup was absolutely delicious, which made me excited to try dining in. Unfortunately, the sit-in experience was the opposite. I waited 30 mins to be sat down and as shown in the photos, the rolls were falling apart. The rice was overly soft and watery, making it impossible for the rolls to hold their shape. Stopped by while in the area on a whim- the place was extremely hot- seemed they don't have a/c but only a small unit that wasn't cooling down the place. We ordered two dishes and an appetizer, the main dish and appetizer came first for my partner and he had finished eating and they still had not brought my roll till I flagged someone down to check. One of the servers sat down to chat (very loudly) next to us to chit chat with her friends dining in. Was already an unpleasant temperature and sitting squished next to another table was not enjoyable. Floor was visibly very dirty- I was also served a glass that had a big chip on the lip. I thought the service here was quite good. The host, server and who I imagine was the owner were all very helpful, friendly and welcoming, which I really appreciated. The food however was not remarkable. I had the katsu chicken and my wife had the teriyaki chicken bento boxes. Both came with salads and other sides that were decently good, but the chicken was bland and unsatisfying. The prices were on the higher end of what I'd expect to pay for a lunch special bento box and there was not much in the way of ambiance. I have been here few times before and it's always pretty good. I like this place because they don't stuff with so much nasty imitation crab stuff to make their rolls like many other places now days. Their shrimp tempura inside of roll is big and yummy. We came here around 5'o clock on weekday and was seated right away. Also the food came out super fast! Everything was so tasty and so yummy, I got some to go too. Ambiance of the place is ok, but I honestly don't care as long as the restaurant is clean and sushi is good. House salad was ok, but cucumber salad was so refreshing and good. Tasted good with sushi too. Mahi tacos were ok. All the sushi rolls I ordered were all very yummy and good.
