I've been visiting Allentown briefly, and decided to give this dinner a try. They have an extensive menu, lots of choices. I found that Sandwiches are bar none in the local area, with a great price for a large sandwich and two sides. Customer service was fantastic, servers were quick and responsive. We met up for a brunch here last week. My friend had the meat lovers breakfast and ate it making yummy noises. I had the eggs Benedict and loved it. The home fries needed salt, but that's the only change I would recommend. My wife had their scrambled eggs with home fries and toast. She said the fries didn't need salt! She has a more refined taste for such things. The coffee was really good. I had two cups as did my friend. We both thought it was served hot, and fresh. I washed down a generous slice of cherry crumb pie with my second cuppa... Our server, Hannah, was perfect. We think she deserved special mention and tipped appropriately. I have been to Chris' 5 times now. I found that you never really know what you are going to get. The food quality is consistent and I would say tends to be in a tier above diner food, and the price point is on the cheaper side as well, but service or the experience as a whole is what seems to be hit or miss depending on the group, and the staff working there that day. For this specific visit we had a large party. I called ahead to ensure that they would have the tables reserved and pulled together for our group. Upon arrival, they had separated the group into different tables even tho there was plenty of room to add on 2 more tables, or create an L shape to keep everyone together. It ended up with a full table and 4 people sitting awkwardly at their own table. Not impressed when we ensured we had a reservation to accommodate the group. For my meal I went with the Cobb Salad. Romaine lettuce, diced chicken, red onions, diced tomatoes, avocado, bleu cheese crumbles, and a hard-boiled egg. The menu stated all salads come with house croutons, but there were no croutons on the salad. I didn't want the croutons, so for me this was fine, but it was either an oversight when my salad was made or a false statement on the menu. The avocado was so under ripened it was chewy, however the salad portions were large and I had enough leftover for a side salad with my dinner. The lettuce was fresh, everything was chopped proportionately so each bite you had all the flavors together. It was a good salad overall. Most of the others in the group had similar comments about their food. Something off a bit but as a whole their meal was good. Chris' Family Restaurant is currently rated at a 4.7 on my Beli. I think their food is worth a drop in, especially for lunch, however they could just use more stability and structure on the hospitality end. read more

My brother won't even go to a regular specialized restaurant for the holidays. He always asks for Chris' even if we've traveled out of state! I've been going here for three years and consistently, it's good food. The service is good, the people are nice. However, I ate there on the 10th with my partner and everything was fine until I went to heat up my leftovers tonight... there is a photo of the raw chicken tenders, then some cooked for reference. These two tenders were leftover from my meal on the 10th. Luckily I cut into them... I couldn't believe how raw some pieces were. My family and I have eaten here well over 20+ times and I've never had an issue like this. I'm just glad I caught it. I hope to not get sick! read more

We decided to try this diner for breakfast/brunch since it wasn't far from our hotel. I was excited to order the cinnamon old-fashioned raisin French toast, but it turned out to be just okay--not as impressive as I had hoped. I also requested turkey sausage but was served pork instead. The staff was very friendly, and our waitress (who was new) did her best. While the prices were quite reasonable, I probably wouldn't return--mainly because the food didn't wow me and I don't live in the area. read more

We visited here over the weekend and the food was great but upon leaving out the back of the restaurant, the chef was sitting on one of the rocks exiting the restaurant throwing up into the grass. While we did not confirm this was the chef he did have on a chef jacket and was right next to the restaurant, this immediately caused concern because if he was the one cooking our food, it is unsanitary if he's sitting there throwing up hopefully he got sent home from work, but it was a bit of a concern that he was there getting sick and could have cooked our food prior to us leaving. read more

We were staying at the HIE hotel that's across the road from this restaurant and decided we'd give them a shot. From the outside, it appears to be a somewhat inviting restaurant. It had ample parking- which at 1930 hours- was pretty ample indeed. The inside was worn, dated, and lacked any ambiance. We were seated in a corner booth behind the check-out area; our server was maybe twenty. He stated from the get-go that he was new; the other servers didn't think twice about correcting him in front of guests, and at times they seemed to be almost badgering him. He was friendly towards us, and was doing a good job for a newbie! I'm a former US Navy Hospital Corpsman who served with the Marines, and now a retired Nationally Registered Paramedic and firefighter would never start giving anyone a impromptu "walk, talk, and mock" in front of other platoon members or later to any civilian EMS staff or in front of bystanders! I apologize for going off track. We felt sorry for this young man. He kept his cool, too. I would have told them to get bent... ‍ My wife and I split a patty melt and fries, (I wasn't very hungry) and our grandson had chicken parmesan that came with a side of spaghetti. His meal also came with a cup of "Pepper Pot" soup, which was followed by a twelve-year-old's unmistakable "bad-taste-face"... Our patty melt was unremarkable. I mean, it wasn't terrible- but nothing I would want to come back to this eatery to get. The fries were Ok. Our grandson didn't eat the chicken parmesan right then, so we took it back to the hotel for him to graze on while watching TV. Later that evening, he decided to cut the chicken parm up some before microwaving it. The chicken was pink in the middle, so I just told him to '86 the entire meal. We are sure glad he didn't ingest any at the restaurant! I ordered broiled salmon broiled in lemon. they broiled it in butter , of course,I sent it back. They didn't charge me for the salmon, but they try to charged me nine dollars for the two sides that came with my meal. The owner said this was their policy. Chicken & rice soup was mostly rice, not enough veg or chicken. Broiled haddock broiled in too much butter and was too small. Plus a section of it missing. Steamed broccoli was soggy, overcooked. Grilled onions were overcooked. Turkey breast was processed, not natural as claimed. Don't even remember rest of the meal. Tiramisu was good. In the past, chicken salad sandwich was okay, salad was okay, vegetable omelet was okay, chili was not great, Shepard's Pie was average, raspberry cheesecake was not good. Don't remember which salad I ordered that was okay. A friend orders a salad she likes every time she comes here, to be fair. Had to order potatoes separately from vegetable omelet, which was unusual. After salad meal, the amount on my check was higher when I took it to cash register to pay than it was when waitress brought check to the table. Long story short, they refunded the overcharge. Another incident where several wads of chewed gum were discovered at bottom of coffee pot left at my friend's son's table. It's a shame because this is a nice building, which could be an amazing restaurant under different ownership. read more

This place was the only thing opened near my hotel when I arrived in town. The food the first night was really good but the service was pretty bad. By the time my meal arrived my drink was empty, the server did not ask if I wanted it refilled. He did not come back until after I finished so I asked for a drink to go. He told me he did not know I wanted more and that they were closing so the tea had been poured out. Since the food was good I gave them another chance during dinner hours. The food was even better than the first time but the service was just as bad. Moral of the story, go for the food but keep your expectations of service low. read more

Very pleasantly surprised, service was seriously fast, and we were taken care of quite well. Food was hot, fresh and plentiful, it's a good thing none of us were on a diet! He seemed uncomfortable doing his job. The hot turkey is good, but the stuffing is like Gerber baby food... Pure mush. Very good salad and honey mustard dressing and croutons. Prices are reasonable especially for the mixed drinks. I would try it again but would definitely not get the stuffing which was really quite terrible. I had breakfast at the counter and the service was great. My order was simple. Creamed chipped beef over home fries with onions. The onions were great. The creamed chipped beef was room temperature and the home fries were awful. They tasted like they were fried in rancid oil. When i went to pay the bill, the lady asked me how my breakfast was and I told her about the home fries.. She then told me that she would tell the kitchen. I told her that the vendor probably sold the oil at a big discount and she said that they would never do that. Obviously, quality is not a factor in their purchases. read more

I said "oh of course", (because that is what makes it eggs Benedict) the man replies "alright"..... This is a classic dinner/family restaurant (not hip but it's a very very good diner) with consistent delicious food! The staff are polite and really really good comfort food with healthy options (eg Brussels sprouts and "power greens"). I would recommend anything on the specials menu, which is diverse (there's Greek, Italian, Indian, Tex-Mex, Seafood, sandwiches, and beyond....). I would highly recommend if you have a group that includes the young and old. If you are young and cool, just enjoy it for the old school "legit" vibes. read more

I worked in Allentown for the summer and Chris' became the go-to late-night spot for a few of my co-workers and I. Every time we came here, everyone was super friendly and welcoming. I'm not a big diner person, but this place is so cozy and clean and not dim, unlike many diners I've been to. The chicken tenders and fries - a classic - were very good. I also ordered the Pineapple chicken with rice, which came with slices of chicken doused in BBQ sauce with chunks of pineapple. It was a little repetitive after a while but it was very tasty. Everything is so fresh and the portions are huge. My friends all enjoyed their food as well - a few of them love breakfast food for dinner and all said great things. Cute little place. I always get great food and service here. Been several time the last few years and will go again.

I like a good, standard diner and if you're in Allentown, Pennsylvania, that's what they specialize in here! Though with most "standard" diners having almost identical menus, it takes a little bit to stand out amongst the crowd. Chris's was fine but not so much "stand out." The coffee (and yes, dear friends, all restaurants that serve breakfast should be initially judged on their coffee) was your standard diner coffee. The good news is I could taste it (which isn't always a given at these kinds of places where you often get browned water. So a couple of points for being able to taste the coffee, though it wasn't particularly strong. They have a unique dish called "Carnegie Potatoes" which is described on the menu as potatoes with milk, onions, roasted red peppers, sour cream, fresh parsley and cheddar cheese, and is served potato pancake style. That's a pretty exciting description for a potato in any form lover like me...however, in practice it really was mashed potatoes served flat. A little bit tasty but there was very little presence of the listed ingredients besides potatoes. I had the standard 2 egg breakfast, made with egg whites. They served it to me with bacon after I had stated I was a vegetarian. It came with an english muffin which, as often happens at these kinds of places, was under toasted. Our waitress was great. She was very personable and dealt very well with our large party at a time when the restaurant was packed. (It was a holiday weekend weekend no available seats.) Chris' did the intended job but we're still on the lookout for a truly standout "standard" diner in the Lehigh Valley. read more
