I was totally disappointed that there was hair in my food well hidden under the eggs. The short order cooks was not wearing any hair nets while cooking on the grill. I explained to the waitress that the cooks was in code violation of food safety regulations. Smh read more

Decent local diner in town. I like going there as they have true turkey sausages. The other diner in town have turkey sausage but people don't realize the casing is pork casing. Visited Jersey for the first time and had Uber'ed with the intention to try a spot across the street. The driver dropped us of in front of Chris's and I could immediately see that a) they were open, and b) it was empty. My party of 5 wanted to dine in, and Mary greeted us warmly and sat us right up front. I learned that the owner was going on 21 years in business. The menus look like any other diner menu, with TONS of choices (I later learned as I was paying that there is a specials board, so don't forget to check). We all had breakfast food--corn beef hash and eggs; 3 different omelets; and the good ol' eggs and ham. We all had large portions and the food was very well done. While we were there, several parties came in and out for take out and sit down, so we luckily missed the rush. We were there about an hour. Recommended! The only complaints were the table was not meant for 5 (maybe 5 small people..sitting sideways..) but the front window allowed us to people watch, which I enjoyed. My husband and I usually order Sunday breakfast from here when I don't feel like making any. Food is always good, service is always fast. On occasion we opt to dine in and the staff is friendly and quick. Their omelettes are on the money and portions are generous. Ive never ordered anything else other than Bfast. read more

Seemed OK at first. Waitress was in training so I asked her if the Gyros were good and described that the meat should be tender, not dry or overcooked? She left the table and ask the cook. When she came back she gave me all the right answers. When my plate came out thank goodness it had tons of lettuce so I had trouble locating the meat and when I did I picked it out and it was the opposite of what I had described to her with an extra bonus of some blackened meat. Tzatziki was mainly the yogurt ( no seasoning). When I got too the register I noticed my ice tea was $5.30 and my friend's fish sandwich was 3 dollars more than noted in the menu. The sign over the counter announced that prices were subject to change according to inflation. I asked if they were Greek owned? To my shock they said yes. Delicious, affordable, easy breakfast in South Orange. My best friend just moved to the area and we hit up this place for breakfast - it was everything we wanted and then some (read: the guy in our party may have almost ordered a second hot dog, it was so good). I came here this past week for lunch with some friends and we loved this place! It's a small diner, but still has plenty of tables. The service is very prompt and friendly and we had no issues. I had a turkey panini and it was absolutely massive and delicious. The fries with it were very fresh as well and crispy, which is a must. Just old school, classic Jersey diner menu, and the food is cooked exactly how it should be. If you're afraid of butter, want something gourmet or chi-chi.... this ain't your spot. Tried this for a second time, because the first time the waitress at that time was screaming at a customer right next to us, so I'm thinking - yeah - maybe that waitress is not there anymore, so I'll try again. I waited 10 minutes in a partially empty diner because the waitress was talking the the regulars at the counter. I got fed up and gave my order the the short order cook. The omlette to was not concealing, and the toast and grits were swimming in butter, spilling over to the omlette. So wanted to like this place!!! read more

Nice little cafe diner right in town. I had a Swiss and bacon burger cooked very nicely with crinkle fries and my sister had the open faced turkey platter with mashed potatoes gravy green beans and salad. Very ordinary diner with very bland food, lots of it previously frozen. Had to send a burger back because it tasted like liver. They use a frozen patty here and the burger goes downhill from there. After years of ignoring it, I finally tried a few times. The primary reason is the other diner in South Orange and the Maple Leaf always feel dirty to me. Chris's was solid for omelette and a turkey club. Felt clean with open kitchen. But what really sold me was the Italian hot dog -- hot dog on a fresh Italian roll with grilled peppers and onions, and home fries. It was shockingly delicious and filling. My favorite diner by a long shot. After you become a regular, the waitresses know what you want. The food is delicious, in the age l-old tradition of NJ diners. Best burgers ever. Every time my friend goes, he requests something custom-made from the chef (waffle sandwiches and the like) and they are happy to oblige! Chris' Texas Weiner is one of the places I go to when I need comfort food and good cheer and if never disappoints. It's a staple for long-time residents and beats all the other places that serve burgers and the like in town by a mile. My first time here though I've passed by here countless times. I'm always happy to see varied diner menus and this place has that variety. I had the chicken cheddar panini and it was a bit of a wait but after it came to the table I knew it would be worth it and the taste further proved it. The chicken was nice and tender and the cheese melted and hot. The actual panini was nice and toasty. The bacon on the sandwich had a nice smoky flavor too. The prices are good too. I sat in the window booth and it is slightly smaller than other diners I've been to in the way of booth seats but I also didn't go all the way into the resturant. It appeared clean and the waitresses were friendly, she came over as soon as I sat down. Theres a tv if you choose to sit more inside the resturant but the window booths allow you to see everything going on the street which gives a nice view. If all the food tastes anything like the sandwich I had then this places is fine by me. read more

I ordered a bacon and egg sandwich (in the evening) and the sandwich came out hot and delicious. It wasn't busy either which is good. This place used to be nice--food was good, service was pleasant--everything you expect in a diner. Now it's gone downhill. Waitress was sneezing and wiping her nose, so I asked for another server to serve us. Kind of upsetting. Cooks were also audibly swearing in English and Spanish. If you want affordable food and unprofessional servers, go here. Otherwise, head across the street to Waffle Iron. You'll pay a bit more, but the food and service is slightly better. read more

We finally found a strong breakfast spot in downtown South Orange on all accounts. After trying many other options nearby, most have failed, but this restaurant is a strong choice. The menu is pretty plentiful and the prices are great. But best of all, the portions are fantastic. The food comes out very quick and we had no complaints at all. I went with the gyro omelet and left feeling full and happy.
