10/18/25 (Update): Stopped in for dinner. Kira was our server and was wonderful! We started out with a "Bees Knees" and a beer. The Bees knees cocktail was really yummy! Entrees- We ordered grilled chicken on focaccia with disco fries and pickle. The sandwich was really tasty and the disco fries were hot and delish! Dessert- The Bananas Foster was a "total disappointment". I've had it before and this one was a total disaster. The few banana slices and flavors were totally suffocated with a block of ice cream and Rediwhip. We'll return, but will try another dessert. read more

I've been to this spot many times over the years. I was in the area recently and looking for a dinner spot. I'm glad I stopped in. They have an array of German food, along with other options. I ordered the kielbasa. And, it was amazing! I would definitely order this again! I'm looking forward to trying more of their entrees. I recommend this spot if you're in the area. Tony provides some great food and new brews here on tap and in bottles. Just listening to what he's coming up with is amazing, and a mix of interesting stories and ingredients waiting for the next barrel. Inside decor is a mix of liquor brands and ads and a knightly armor watching over the dining area. Parking in the muni lot in the back for 2hr or on the street, and back entry and front entry. They have an upstairs, I think, but it wasn't open when we went. The big brewery tanks for beer located to the right room as you enter, as well as one of those little sand/hand shuffleboard tables. Nachos were ok, a good mix of toppings, though I will have to ask for more olives in the future. Service was a little slow, but at least they figured out they were missing an extra after-dinner candy for the group of four- good check by the young man. The key to visit for: The Ante-Gator is an antelope-alligator-ribeye-pork burger which is amazing. This is the only place I know that does this combo. Obviously not rare (must be fully cooked because of the pork and antelope), and instead of the normal salad on top, you get shredded napa cabbage, jalapeno bottle caps, chipotle aioli for a kick, smoked mozzarella, french fried onions, bacon, and comes with garlic dill steak fries & a house made pickle on top. Juicy, and limited - if you come late, you may not get one, so if you want to call ahead and reserve if you have a large party that wants more than a couple! Amazing and filling burger, and the dill steak fries (if you're a fan of dill) are hard to stop eating! Definitely filling... couldn't finish the fries. This is one of my favorite local bars. The bartenders are so nice and friendly. I love Benny and Jeff. First off, this bar has an ample selection of beers. I usually go for drinks, but the food is pretty good. I love to come here and play darts or shuffle board. They will give you darts and shuffles in exchange for your license. The bar is pretty large and there are plenty of tables. It's never too crowded and you can always get a seat which is nice. I highly recommend checking out this local spot, grabbing a beer, and playing a round of darts. read more

Meh! That's the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to this place. I was excited to come to South Orange and try this place, but once we sat down at the bar the smarta*s bartender rubbed me the wrong way. First off, he wasn't welcoming or friendly and took his good old time to ask what we wanted with zero emotions on his face. Do you hate your job? Come on! I asked him to pick a beer for me and my girlfriend, like that is something hard to do considering I wanted an IPA and she wanted a sour or cider, his choice. But he acted like an arrogant dipsh*t and was like well this and well that and finally I said, Okay give me this and that. I mean you work in a brewery as a bartender and you can't recommend a beer from your brewery based off what we said we like and when I say one you say, Oh no I don't like that or that or that or that or that... WTH! Okay bro, gotcha! Go back to talking to the one person sitting at your bar besides us. lol. Needless to say I wasn't impressed with their beer, their service, or their employees. I guess that is why we were 2 of the only 5 people there. It's a shame too because it's a great building and the atmosphere itself is cool. Got here early before a show. Seated in dining room & waited on promptly. Menu is quite large with a focus on German food, although pizzas, burgers & other bar goid also available. Husband & I split Wurst platter that had 4 types of German sausage, potato salad, red cabbage, spaetzel , rye bread & mustard. So good and plenty for the two of us. Thus was not our first time there & had similar dishes prior. Always on the mark. Skipped dessert but 4 homemade choices if we were interested. Great place if you're going to a show at SOPAC as it's only 2 blocks away. This is on our list when looking for a place for dinner in South Orange. read more

While visiting some friends on the East Coast, we decided to try a spot they had never been to before. They just moved to their new neighborhood a year ago and are still getting to know all the local spots. We ended up at Gaslight Brewery for a pint. The aesthetic was something between Cheers and an old school bar. We sat up at the bar and each order a pint. I decided to try a Kolsch while my friends ordered two of their other respective beers. The Kolsch was decent, but nothing phenomenal. The vibe was a little off and the bartender almost seemed annoyed we were there. They do have darts and shuffleboard, but like I said, we just weren't feeling the vibe so after we finished our pints, we closed out our tab and headed elsewhere. It has the potential to be a really cool spot, but it just wasn't hitting the mark. read more

We made a reservation because it was Friday night. We walked in there were plenty of empty tables. There is four of us having dinner together. We order our food, the waitress reads back to us everything we ordered. Three of us get our meals. We are waiting for the fourth meal to come. We are still waiting and ask. Finally after 20 minutes we say take it off the bill. They say another 7 minutes. No we don't want it, it took too long. They should have offered something to make it for their mistake. Now I understand why people say that the Gaslight does not like kids. I frequent Gaslight approx once a week, usually sitting at the bar for drinks. On most occasions, I order a club soda with my alcoholic beverages and get free refills of the soda. The story is totally different when I come here with my family. They charge for every glass of sofa consumed, even though they're halfway filled with ice. Of course, they don't tell you they charge for refills until the bill comes and I know it's not the fault of the server but of stingy management. I've dined here with my parents and they don't charge them for refill of sodas so that only reinforces the rumor (fact) that the owners don't want kids visiting their establishment and will do whatever they can to keep them away. Again, no fault of the wait staff - they were wonderful and the only reason tonight's meal got two stars. read more

I guess I gaslit the Gaslight Brewery, because I've been sleeping on Gaslight's food! This place has free darts, shuffle board and home brewed beers. Tried the food here recently and was happily surprised! Tried the shrimp dish and French onion soup which we both great. The shrimp was chock full of garlic and parsley (true to the menu which labeled it as a 'ridiculous' amount of garlic). The onions in the French onion soup were perfectly caramelized and the cheese on top of the crock was nice n crispy. Even the mozzarella sticks and red sauce were good. Fries were seasoned with dill and quite unique. Haven't tried their home brewed beer in a while but remembered liking it. read more

I've been coming to this place for years now and shockingly haven't posted a review! Having tried probably 3/4 of the menus and many of their specials, I can say that food never disappoints. I'll focus on my favorite here which is the shrimp and grits. Having come from moved up here from Deep South I was somewhat shocked by how good these weee. Perfectly blended in cheese, topped with bacon, onions, and perfectly seasoned shrimp. Portion here are also very generous so bring your appetite. Plenty of beers on tap, including ones they brew and visiting beers. For appetizer, their thermonuclear wings are something's to really get your sense on high alert, very spicy home made dry rub served with a side of blue cheese, splashed with their home made hot sauce. Ambiance is cheers meets your neighborhood's pub. Homey and comfortable. They have darts, and shuffle board. Service is always on point here and always welcoming. They take pride in their food, rotating desert menus, and specials you wish would stay forever. read more

Upon entering the brewery I was welcomed by the bartender (Warren). Very personable he promptly offered menus once we stated this was our 1st time there. He let us know they make their own beers and let me sample some. I tried a couple but don't remember the names. I ended up getting a German grapefruit beer he recommended once I realized I wasn't a fan of there home brewed batches. I tried the Gaslight pizza which is just a Buffalo chicken pizza with blue cheese on it. It was actually pretty tasty. DonThe wall paintings are nice. The music selection is blah. So this place is great for a chilled bar feel and great food. Why I say great food? Mannnnn I also went with my friend and he had a lamb burger which he shared. It was an amazing burger. EVERY BITE. He also said "it's the BEST BURGER I EVER HAD. They do say it's God's favorite food (lamb) ". Me: Wow I see why! For a "brewery" it's a rather divey dive bar with unfriendly bartenders, depressed barflies, quiet ambiance, warm beer, and bad food. Could be a cool community place given the size of the space and its location but currently it's just a giant mass of sad, mildewy funk. In terms of food, I ordered the Wurst Platter and it was true to its name. Sausage was clearly store bought but not bad, but the accompanying potato salad and sauerkraut were rancid. Nice hidden gem for those who are into crafted beers. For those like myself who aren't into the crafted beer, go give this place a try regardless! The bartender was great helping me find a crafted beer that matched my tastebuds. I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich that was so big I only had half. The pretzels were extremely soft and fresh with an awesome beer cheddar cheese. My date could not stop raving about the pastrami ruben. As a matter a fact there was two other people across the bar talking about this delicious pastrami as well. The place was also kid friendly. Seen a handful of families come in to sit at tables. We went with someone who had been there before. The night we went was the night of the Kentucky Derby and the full up! They also had an extremely large party in the back which was impossible to get through without rubbing up against people. Noisy and the Derby was blaring on the TV. However the beer was alright and food too. The servers where actually crazy good and kept up with us like we were the only ones in the bar (seriously impressive) I couldn't believe how many times we got checked on. It's okay but personally I don't enjoy the fact that TVs blaring football games hinders conversation. Unfortunately our waitress was preoccupied with hanging out with some friends instead of attending to our table. It was so bad I had to go to the bar to order a beer refill since the waitress was busy socializing. The appetizers were good. We had nachos, garlic shrimp, Brie and calamari. Many of us had fish and chips but instead of the traditionally cod it was made with what I believe was tilapia. This made for a very high breading to fish ratio since the fish was so thin. Please don't order it unless you like to eat breading with a little fish. Dessert menu was presented without prices. That's a bit deceptive. If you like good beer and good food, Gaslight will not disappoint. Creative menu options and well prepared food that's fast and delicious. These guys are master brewers, try a flight and sample some of the many options brewed fresh in house (there is nothing better than freshly brewed beer). I seem to always love what's on the jukebox, and the food is really great. My favorites are: the fish and chips- great full half filet of cod perfectly fried in a delicate and crunchy batter served on top of sweet potato fries (substitute for their white potato fries which are also great), and I always ask for their homemade beer infused BBQ sauce on the side. The French onion soup- its a classic and they make it so good we order a bowl or two every visit (may also contain beer, seems to be a theme considering they are master brewers). Rich and flavorful chock full of onions in a hearty broth with a hunk of bread and the perfect amount of melted cheese on top- every time you get to the bottom you wish it would never end. The burgers- perfectly made, excellent quality beef made the way you ask for it, in our case medium rare. The shrimp! The beer!!! The specials! Even the house wine is good :) Get off the train and head for the Gaslight and you will find yourself here again and again. Kudos to the family owned Gaslight! read more

I can agree with the 3 star average. There were things I liked and disliked. The Food was ok. The server kept sitting down which I thought was weird, and did not check to see if we needed refills or how the food was, they were very nice though. The shrimp and grits didn't make sense. I like the grits but not the rest, like it didn't go with the dish. Ambiance is like you stepped back in time. The Oreo cake was good, decent size piece. Was craving fish and chips but didn't want to go to far so decided to try this local place in town. Tried them years ago and the food was OK so not sure if they underwent new management, supplier change or what but the food was not good at all. The fish taste like freezer fisher that was soaked in grease and the fries were nasty too. We also got catfish nuggets or what we thought were. It was bland and burnt not a good eating here. Last time we showed up at the Gaslight, we found that the incorrect hours were posted. We were very disappointed but their mistake allowed us to find the Reservoir Tavern down the street. We recently gave the Gaslight another try on a Friday, lunchtime. Would they be open? Yes, yes they were. We were the only patrons there at the noon hour. A few people filtered in during the hour we were there. It was a nice quiet lunch, something my son and I rarely experience. Invariably, we are seated next to some blowhard who talks at high volume throughout the meal. But I digress. Friendly service, a thoughtful menu. Hot wings and spicy waffle fries for the boy. A Memphis pulled pork sandwich, beans and waffle fries for me. A to go order for my wife, of course. A Hobgobbler sandwich. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce. Thanksgiving on a sandwich. Everything was outstanding. No complaints at all. My wife thought it was one of the best sandwiches she had ever had. The wings were hot and made my son's nose drip. Well done. And my sandwich was fantastic, piled high with tasty pulled pork. The beans were made perfectly. Not mush. Not rock hard. Just right and very flavorful. I decided to try this place via DoorDash when I saw they had a really good looking Brie appetizer. I LOVE Brie! I also ordered a Caesar salad and fried calamari (both were fine) when I went to try the baked Brie, I was greeted by the most unpleasant smell and taste simultaneously. I liked this place a lot. Im def coming back. We came in around 8pm and we sat at the bar. The bar was packed and there was one bartender. I was concerned for a second, but he was a pro; very good service. This place has a great beer menu, which is why we chose it. I ordered the oat stout, which was delicious and I'm def coming back for it. We ordered the nachos for the app and it was ok, but I wouldn't order it again. For my entree I ordered the jagerschnitzel and I really enjoyed. This place is a place you go when you want to have good beer with friends and eat good bar food. They have a lot of sandwiches too.
