Oh Village Pizza. Having grown up in the area this was the pizza place to go to for pizza and similar fare no question about it- wings, hot subs, favorite sodas all that and more. Be it walking home from school, weekend delivery, craving some wings on a whim, you name the occasion. Somewhere along the line owners switched and the pizza has been ho-hum ever since which hasn't helped, as well as more competition showing up over the years with no kind of fight to keep its status up. This includes Pirates pizza and Trattoria - both of which are more or less in walking distance. Its dated here, just like Dominos its almost exclusively a take out shop with only seating for maybe 2 comfortably. This is where it starts to lose out to places like Trattoria again, only a few blocks away very quickly. The boss here is kinda dejected, he's not all that friendly and it makes him seem like he doesnt care and like he's out of touch since now many restaurants management likes to interact with customers. The M.O here is hiring a PYT from the nearby SHU campus which changes on the year and thats cool- by all means but most of the time they aren't very engaging either which makes me think its a "not leading by example" from management and just pure eye candy. Maybe I'm reading too much into this? It just wasn't like this when I'd come here back in 199X and the pizza and service was best. Now both of these points make Village mediocre at best. With more issues that drag points off the card here I will say on the positive that the top draw here is still the Tuesday special - which brings a large takeout pie to less than $10. Overall Village Pizza has slumped to my least favorite Pizza in the area. read more

The pizzas were room temperature at best when delivered. The buffalo chicken pizza didn't come with the blue cheese as advertised. Even worse, the pizzas were obviously too big for the boxes, so instead of using large enough boxes they just folded the pizza over in the box. Delivery to Maplewood came in about 35 minutes on a Wednesday, which isn't bad. The eggplant parm sub was decent, and the half (10") was reasonably priced at $5.75. The pasta e fagioli was fine. Food was hot when it arrived. The bill was higher than I was quoted on the phone. When I called to ask why, the person said there was an upcharge for using a credit card. I said nobody told me that when I offered to provide my credit card. The person to whom I was speaking said it wasn't her problem because she didn't take the order. That was not the right answer. I am not sure if they changed chefs or what but the last two times I ordered the pizza has been burnt and the cheese has an odd flavor. This used to be my favorite place to order from because I knew I was getting a good pizza. I guess it is time to find a new favorite. So this was my second time having a horrible experience with Village Pizzeria. The first time was a few weeks ago when I ordered two slices of pizza for delivery. My slices came cold and the crust was extremely hard and stale. Today, I called at 3:30 p.m. to order a chicken parm sub and slice of pizza to my apartment. I live about 5 minutes from Village. Around 4pm, I called to see if my food was on the way and the girl who picks up the phone said "Yes it is, it just went out." Another half an hour goes by and my food was STILL not here. Frustrated, I called again and the girl said "It's on the way" and hung up. Rude and totally impersonal. When the delivery man finally got to my apartment, I asked him what took so long, he said he had a lot of deliveries and kindly apologized. I said "Oh, okay because I ordered at 3:34pm," to which he said "Really? They just gave me your order now." Shocked and irritated, I took my food upstairs. I then saw the delivery man was right, as my bread for my chicken parm sub was soggy, hinting that the food had just been sitting there the whole time. I had cold pizza one again as well. I will not be ordering from Village Pizzeria again for some time. When they take the time to improve their customer service, I'll spend my money there. read more

We need cheap pizza for our kids, and VP has met this need for many years. The Tuesday special Giant pie for $7, times two for us, lasts our kids all week long for after-school snacks.. No other pizza place in the area comes close to this remarkable value proposition. And, the pizza at VP is fine. It does not sag in the middle, and the sauce has a flavor if not a tad bit sweet. Ordered dinner here for family on Sunday and everything was delicious. We had the fettuccini alfredo w chicken and extrA garlic, baked ziti w sausage, chicken marsala w penne, lasagna, wings and Greek salad. Set everything thing out and enjoyed family style dinner. I went here after classes because I was starving and saw the menu and prices online ( good prices ) .to begin I ordered 2 slices Of plain pizza and 2 garlic knots. The service was alright ( nothing to brag about) but the reason this place got a one star is because the food was horrible !!! The pizza lacked in flavor and seasoning, the garlic bread was horrible . You can tell this place is not authentic most garlic knots I have , contain actual garlic this one didn't. I couldn't even Force myself to eat the garlic knots so I tossed them . And overall the pizza and knots tasted as if they were put on a charcoal grill with burgers for a minute . Overall the place is horrible and I probably would never return . It's small and not too clean looking , and the food is not good. Eh, ho-hum pizza and food in an area where you can get MUCH better quality pizza. I think this place is popular just because of its proximity to Seton Hall University. It's easy, its cheap, and they deliver. I can't tell you how many meetings/functions I've been to at Seton Hall and Village is usually the pizza vendor of choice. The stale crusty mass of cheese, usually cold by the time it gets delivered, works in a pinch to feed a lot of people...but as I said there is much better pizza in the area. Also, for some reason I ALWAYS come across a vegetarian pie that people order, its really just a ton of broccoli thrown onto a regular slice of pizza. If you are doing a broccoli pie, it HAS to be white pizza for it to be good! People of South Orange, there is better pizza out there, you just have to walk a few blocks down the road! read more

The absolute WORSE pizza and business practice. I ordered an extra large pizza for $13 for delivery. The driver gave me a receipt for roughly $19. When I called to clarify, I was told there was a $2.25 fee for delivery (which is fine) and a $2.25 fee "because we didn't have your debit card here to swipe it." What???? Now, I've experienced a DOLLAR fee if my order fell below the $10 minimum but, I've never been CHARGED FOR USING MY DEBIT CARD FOR THE PHONE ORDER. I simply thanked him and hung up. It felt like a shake down and to top it off, the genius wrote my debit card number on the receipt. Where else is that number just hanging around? The pizza itself was EXTREMELY CHEAPLY MADE. There wasn't enough sauce and the cheese reminded me of white string cheese; the kind I can get at Walmart or someplace. Overall: TERRIBLE. Village Pizzeria has great pizza, subs and Italian specialties. The bread and pizza dough are freshly made as needed. Pizza is phenomenal. Deserts are delicious. Subs, hot and cold, are made on freshly cooked sub rolls with tasty meats and accompanied by cheese lettuce tomato. Delivery is very efficient. Don't believe the naysayers about this restaurant. We order their food 3 or 4 times a week here in the office and we have a lot of other choices. We choose Village Pizzeria because we love the food and service. read more

The pizza isn't the best around but it's still pretty good. I have mixed feelings about their sandwiches because I've had a bad experience with them before. Sometimes it seems that their meet isn't as fresh as it could be. With that being said I also want to say that their tuna sandwiches are amazing. The past few times I've stayed in the area on business I have ordered from Village Pizzeria and I have to say it's extremely hit or miss. The pastas are usually a safe bet especially the penne and vodka sauce. However, the sandwiches are messy and not well constructed. Don't go for the hot heros there so just stick with what they do best: pasta and garlic bread.
