Did a search for Christmas lights in LA and came across Christmas Tree Lane. We took a drive and it's about a half mile long. After visiting a couple others in Northern CA and San Diego, this was mediocre. It's amazing that all the trees on the street were lit up, but that was about it. There were a few houses that were well decorated, but not many. Can't complain for a free ride. We didn't get out to walk as it was quite chilly, there isn't a side walk, and the street is on an incline. We saw a few families walking, but it wasn't a very well lit area. read more

I finally made my way to Christmas Tree Lane and it's so nice with what the city of Altadena does. The lights are hung up on the trees for a few blocks. You can park your car and walk if you wish, but being in the car is okay. A few houses are decorated for Christmas which is nice and you can check them out while on foot. It probably didn't help that there was light rain when I went so I wasn't going to park. This is a very enjoyable Christmas experience. read more

I think it's great the neighborhood has such a tradition as decorating trees with lights. During my visit, I drove and pulled over a few times to admire the lights. PRO-TIP: If you wanna see the lights better and the traffic is bad, it'd be really nice if people would dim their lights. The lane of trees is best appreciated from the middle of the car, so either looking forward or back in the backseat. Very cute drive through. I've gone when there was no traffic around and was able to look at explore the surrounding neighborhood of decorations. It's not super fancy like, say Brea's or Torrance's neighborhood of lights, but it's decent. I thought it was a good idea to come visit Christmas Tree Lane on Christmas day and oh boy it was probably one of the worst decisions I made in 2020 ... Apparently Christmas Tree Lane is claimed to be the "oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world" and has been displaying Christmas lights every year since 1920. The lane starts at the intersection of Woodbury Avenue & Santa Rosa Avenue and the 0.7-mile tree lighting extends all the way to Altadena Drive. Why do I think it was such a bad idea to visit Christmas Tree Lane during a pandemic year? (1) I thought it was a good idea to stay inside the car & cruise along Santa Rosa Avenue. Well I guess everyone had the exact same idea and the traffic was horrendous. For anyone who really misses LA traffic, then come to Christmas Tree Lane on Christmas day to re-live the classic one-mile-takes-thirty-minute experience. Talk about traffic nightmare before Christmas ... (2) There were probably more car headlights then actual Christmas lights from each house. All joking aside, most of houses were undecorated. (3) I followed Google Map and entered in the middle of Christmas Tree Lane via Calaveras St so technically I only checked out half of the lane, but I simply did not want to make a U-turn to see the rest when pedestrians literally walked faster than moving cars. What a waste of time ... and it is just like how 2020 is a lost year for many folks. If I wasn't the driver, then I can probably finish an entire episode of The Queen's Gambit as a passenger. read more

It's beautiful and romantic...I want my next husband to propose to me here...but it seems to be a ghost of the splendor that once was. The individual houses along the road are 99% undecorated. The Deodar trees along the entire street are lovely though, and pictures don't do it justice - but the lights are not as bright as I thought they'd be. Careful of the cement ditches/storm drains by the sides of the road! These are the kind that are almost as wide as a small car with a cement bridge going to the homes. If you drive into one you'll need to hire special equipment to get your car out! It's actually now named Santa Rosa Avenue (not Christmas Tree Lane) and is located at the intersection of Mariposa Ave. The yearly festivities begin with a daytime arts & crafts fair the second Saturday in December with a tree-lighting ceremony at 6pm. I did not know about this and so I did not attend. ChristmasTreeLane.net is run by an all volunteer group of local citizens. Their fascinating history includes Boy Scout volunteers, So Calif. Edison (donating the electricity), and the Women's Auxiliary. It is listed in the 1990 National Registry of Historic Places and is a California Landmark. Deodar, which is a cedar-evergreen coniferous tree, is native to the Himalayas, Afghan, Pakistan, India, Tibet and Nepal. They were brought here in 1885 by John Paul Woodbury who planted 134 of these trees as a mile-long driveway to his planned estate and mansion (which was never realized). The trees were first officially lit up in 1920 and was originally called the "Avenue of Deodars". Christmas Tree Lane is a more poetic moniker, don't you think? Went here last-night, I normally go to El segundo but decided to come here . We got there and parked and made our way down to see the lights, some sections were really pretty, some weren't decorated, the trees were beautiful. If you want to enjoy this place driving through is your best bet, you won't get much of that aww experience walking, first of all because it's freezing and secondly, not too many decorations, a drive thru with some Christmas music is all the vibe you'll need! Wow, I do not recall Christmas Tree lane being so packed and so undecorated. I recall homes being full decorated where you just feel the holiday spirit. This year was a total let down. I talked my toddlers into getting excited about the Christmas lights here and when we went it was bumper to bumper with little to see. There was a few ppl directing traffic and selling lighted up balloons but besides that the decorations was close to none. The lights that were lighted up was mainly on top which were strings of lights and that was it for about 20 mins of one street down. I recall more homes decorated and full of holiday spirit. Not sure if its COVID that caused homes to not decorate but I definitely feel like it could've been much better. It's free but not worth your time. The name says it all. A lane full of lit-up trees from above. That's mainly it. Homes along that street or others were barely lit. Mostly simple single strip decor on the rooftops. Everything else was darkness. It was my first time this yr. I spent maybe 15 minutes here. Drove about 20 min to get here. Crowded street but it was moving pretty quick. I'm most impressed with the aerial silk dancer (dk actual name) who was performing at the corner house along that lane. You won't miss her. She made this trip worthwhile. It was semi cold & she was a trooper. Very generous of her to do that. Her house was all lit up w/ music playing so you won't miss it. Not sure if she'll be performing after the holidays. Overall, fun experience if you live in neighboring cities! Great for the kids too. read more

This is one time when I didn't do enough advance research to go with the expectations of "The Famous Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena". Perhaps if I'd had my mind set on what we'd be seeing, I'd have enjoyed it more. This is certainly an area tradition - as I'm reading more, I understand the locals' reverence for it. The trees are more than 100 years old, and residents enjoy the drive for many blocks up the gentle up-slope to marvel at the elegant trees strung with multi-colored lights. There is a majesty to the fact that the trees are still alive with all they've been through - pollution, building encroachment, droughts, and more. The height of the trees and the sprinkling of lights adds to a magical feeling. On the down side, there are no sidewalks, so walking is actually dangerous. Ideally, everyone would just put on their parking lights and go very slowly, but with pedestrians walking, and steep drop-offs for drainage, in lieu of proper gutters, that could be really dicey. There is a house at the southern end of the lane with various model train displays set up. But there's very little parking, so we didn't get to go back and enjoy it. Most of the homes on the street have minimal additional decorations, letting the big trees do the talking. As others have said, if you are expecting Candy Cane Lane / Candlelight Lane in the Valley, you won't find it here. It would be beautiful to be able to walk the street, but with the road layout and no sidewalks, it's not practical at all. Wish I'd known about nearby mansion other Yelpers are mentioning, as we were in the area for the first time during the holidays. Our attempt to shake it up and try a few new areas was not as successful as we'd hoped. read more

Eh, it's okay. I work down the street and had seen it on a brochure. People told me to check it out with my boyfriend. We went last week and walked over from my work. People suggested walking because it gets super busy with cars, but I didn't feel like that was the case. And we went over on a Sunday around 8:30? First off, look at the photos from others. It's just an entire lane with rainbow bulbs and nothing else. It's nice but it's nothing impressive. There's no creativity and to me with the multicolored bulbs it's a little more on the tacky side than the pretty ethereal side. It's also not a very safe place to walk in my opinion, so I don't know why my coworkers said so. I genuinely feel like you should drive through it. There's no sidewalk or path and if you have little ones you need to be careful that they don't run off and accidentally slip towards the ditch. It's a pretty big ditch that runs along both side I presume. There's these little areas to walk on, the mulch underneath some of the trees but not all of them have it. Regardless, I'm happy I experienced it but I'm not overly impressed nor would I come out here to see the lights. I think your time is better spent in Redondo Beach or Brea checking out their neighborhoods! read more

It's very simple, but the effect is very pretty. It's residential, so there's no fees to enter or park. Most of the houses aren't meant to attract attention. You're supposed to just appreciate the many tall trees framing the road. I knew before I even arrived that any pictures I take wouldn't do it justice. You need to experience it yourself. Since it's still early on in the month, there aren't any crowds. We did a quick drive though, but we could've gone at a snail's pace and it would've been mostly fine. We could've parked and walked it as well, but it was cold. IMPORTANT note: be careful pulling over to park! They have ridiculously big ditches. I thought it was for construction at first, but apparently that's their main drain system. Christmas Tree Lane is perfect for a quick detour if you're already in the area, but if you're expecting a grandiose display, you're better off going elsewhere. read more

Ho-ho-ho, Christmas Tree Lane is a no-go-go! You might have heard of the place or seen some IG worthy pictures, but save yourself the trip. It's not worth it, and it was free! There were so many cars! Bumper to bumper. You can literally feel your hair growing. It took us 40 minutes to get to the entrance! And guess what? We just ended up parking nearby last minute because Christmas Tree Lane is a mile long road. So it probably would've been another 40 minutes to get through? And then another 20 to get out? No thank you, I'd like to get home before my kid graduates from college (she's 1 btw). Someone on Yelp said there were only 4 houses that were well decorated? We walked only a third of the way and literally saw nothing that wow'd us. So disappointing. There was someone dressed up as the Grinch though? Which was cool? Maybe he stole all the decorations and Christmas spirit? That would explain why he was so jolly... Okay, I'm being harsh but only because this was the 100th year anniversary. And it was our first time. We were expecting decorations that would shame the North Pole. We were even expecting some little hot chocolate stands. Thank lord we parked our car. I would advise the same. There are no sidewalks though, so be careful. The ONLY thing that was semi-noteworthy were the lights hanging off of all the big cedars up and down the street. Chances are you saw these trees on social media selling the experience. It kind of feels like a tunnel of lights? Still not worth your time. I promise you, once you pull up, you'll notice that the street isn't exactly radiating. There's a lot of dark houses. We saw better decorations on the way home! In 1885 John P. Woodbury, a founder of Altadena, planted 134 Deodar Trees as grand mile-long driveway entrance to the mansion he would build. Woodbury's mansion was never built, but the trees thrived and the "driveway" became Santa Rosa Avenue. Last night, December 21, 2014, my sister and I drove up Santa Rosa Avenue between Woodbury and Altadena Drive to see the Deodar Trees all strung and lit up with lights and we thought it was gorgeous. We weren't there to see the houses all lit up, but some of those were beautiful as well. There are other reviewers that have written about their disappointment that all of the homes were not all being decked out as in previous years. I believe the whole point of that street are the trees, hence the name. We were also pleasantly surprised to see a parade of well lit Smart Cars drive up the street. It has inspired me to deck out my Mini and see if I can get some other Mini drivers to drive up and down the street next year. It is wonderful that a group of volunteers organizes this effort to light the trees year after year and I really hope it continues. Not to be a party pooper but this isn't the twinkling Christmas Tree Lane I remember. The LED lights are dimmer, 1/2 of the houses are not decorated, the traffic is always bad but the new influx of Instagrammers getting out of their cars for photo sessions in the middle of it is just ... not cool. The history of the non native Deodar trees being brought here doesn't seem quite as romantic as it once did with what we now know about non native species but it is still a fascinating story. You should check out the website and read about the history but really ... you should just take a walk in your own neighborhood and appreciate the local charm. Part of me wonders if the neighborhood association of volunteers which runs the festivities are even aware that LED lights dim with age but I feel pretty strongly that LED technology has improved enough since these were installed a few years back upgrading them would be a worthwhile endeavor. read more

The lighting of this mile or so of Deodar cedar trees dates back to 1920, with the trees being grown from seed and planted along Santa Rosa Ave. by John P. According to records, local do-gooders like the Kiwanis club were driving underprivileged kids along the holiday lighted drive as early as 1925. Today, a Christmas Tree Lane Association publishes a website promoting this California State Landmark. Over 10,000 lights adorn these 130 year old trees each year, supported by the local community and volunteers. You can probably find more impressive light displays around SoCal, but the simple joy of driving slowly with the windows down, watching the thousands of lights strung among the branches harkened back to a time before LED, lasers, or even plastic electrical insulation. If you're out driving around looking at Christmas lights, enjoy this historical spot, then check out the Balian Mansion as you work your way over to Hastings Ranch or St. Albums in San Marino. This is more about history and how long they had the lights up every Dec since 1920. It is a little sad that not every house participates. Especially knowing the tradition when moving in. It's like the Christmas spirit is fading. I think it is a nice little detour through Altadena. The trees look so nice and like someone else said pictures do it no justice. I went on the 26th the day after Christmas. I attempted to go one day my daughter and I had a long nap and were up at 12am. Sad to say they do third off the lights. So we swung by today around 8:30pm and they were on. Not too bad of traffic. I will def want to bring my daughter again next year read more
