staff was rude- I just called as a new patient to make an appointment and because they could not find my authorization even though I was going to provide them with the numbers they refused to make an appointment then proceeded to tell me they needed xrays and medical records of which I dont have but need to see someone due to my severe back pain. this is ridiculous. very disappointing read more

As I write this review, words cannot describe my amazing experience not just at this clinic but as well with Doctor Charbonnet. I've had a couple of friends and family recommend him to me after helping them out through various years of critical issues. In the last couple of months I found myself with back pains that were taking over my life, but were truly a blessing in disguise to help me find a doctor that was successfully able to help. Truly one of the best doctors out there. He was not just able to help me control my pain but take back control of my life. Believe all the one star reviewers. I used to see dr Charbonnet around the year 2012 for a neck injury. 1. He treats you like a drug seeker, despite the scanned evidence that you would be in severe pain. 2. Long wait times. 3. He shows zero empathy. The reason I'm writing this is because I visited a pain Mgmt dr today in another part of town and had a completely different experience (this time for a new injury to a different part of the spine). I wanted all who are patients or who are considering seeing him to look elsewhere. He doesn't deserve your time and you certainly shouldn't put up with his treatment of patients. I broke my back last year (T12 burst fracture) and was in severe pain with downward pressure on L1, L2 and L3 from the collapsed T12. It turns out I was a candidate for a rhyzotomy (treating the nerves that ran through the facets). The relief was absolutely amazing. I feel like a different person. I even cleaned my house today with no pain. I was awake and spoke with Dr. Charbonnet throughout the procedure and felt completely confident about his treatment. Dr. Charbonnet is a relaxed, straight forward, no BS doctor. I would trade all of my other doctors combined for this guy - so easy to deal with. Grateful to be nearly pain free. read more

If you are seeking a compassionate doctor who is accessible to patients and returns calls, save your time and keep looking. I wish I'd paid more attention to these Yelp reviews and saved myself months of pain instead of dealing with this office to which I was referred for epidurals and pain management. NEVER could I have imagined how uncaring this man is or how he would leave me completely without care for simply expecting him to return a medically necessary phone call. (He doesn't return patient calls but no one in the office will ever tell you that!) Summary of my initial visit: Dr. Charbonnet came across somewhat charming which I realized later was a total facade; it's all ego. He didn't look at the list the office insisted I bring in of my current medications or at my intake paperwork in appointment. I described my history of pain and he prescribed a medication without looking at any of my other meds. He told me my insurance wouldn't pay for injection until i completed several physical therapy visits which I later found out was false and left me another two months in pain. After the initial appointment, I needed to reach him about potential medication contraindications which is when I came to find out that he does not return patient calls. I initially called to leave a message on a Tues., the day after my appt (which happens to be the one day a week he is out of the office but the girl I spoke with didn't know this or whether he was coming in at all that day). I called because I was concerned about a medication contraindication between a new med he'd just put me on that my pharmacist informed me might be too sedating with my current medications. I feared the doctor might have missed this as I didn't see him go over my list of current medications during my appt. I called three days in a row with no return calls from him and no concern from girls taking messages. Totally exasperating. I finally paged him on a Thursday after work and after he'd failed to return my call that day as well; he returned the page but said nothing about him failing to returned any of my calls, then he happened to mentioned that he was going out of town for 2 weeks. Thank God I had been persistent in calling and found it this out or I never would've gotten a return call or gotten my medication changed or refilled because he has no doctor covering for him when he leaves town for 14 business days. (I find this unbelievable considering many of his patients are on some type or medication and he doesn't write refills so you have to call in each time.) I asked his office who I was supposed to go to or call during thar time if I needed help and they told me my primary care physician or the E..R.! First off, a primary care physician will NOT prescribe pain medication and why would they direct me to the ER for a non-emergency?! After 6 unreturned calls for 2 separate issues over multiple weeks, I commented to one of his front desk receptionists how their pain clinic's lack of responsiveness was making me feel. Several days later of still no returned calls to my 2nd message, this uncaring jerk sent me a certified letter that he was terminating my "care" because clearly, he doesn't like being expected to return calls. Unbelievable that he couldn't wait to "fire" me until after I received the epidural I'd been waiting 7 months to get?! That says so much about his lack of compassion. So I'm now left in horrible pain starting all over from scratch. Also, he or his office failed to fill out their portion of my DMV temporary disabled parking form correctly so I had to drive back to their office again to have them fix it. (He charges to sign the form but can't manage to fill it out correctly?!) With that lack of attention to detail, I'd be afraid to have this man operate on me. Very disheartening that there are doctors out there who take an oath to "do no harm" yet actually cause their patients emotional pain by their total lack of compassion and failing to mention (or have their staff tell patients) that the doctor doesn't return calls. This was also during Covid; their office did not mark off the waiting room chairs for social distancing requirements as do other medical offices and I noticed they don't sanitize the pens they give out to fill out initial paperwork. The initial paperwork was apparently supposed to be texted to me but someone there forgot to do that, too. I found the admin staff to lack information and one was very rude to me. His medical asst is nice and does her best to handle everything. The office is located in an old building, and the elevator is slow and creaks like it's about to die; take with caution. read more

I'm not sure what crawled up the arses of the people who left bad reviews for this doctor as he's a super nice guy. Not arrogant at all. Not a jerk. If something bad happened and you were mistreated then of course tell your story and I'll agree with you but I just don't have the same view of this guy. Dr Charbonette was nothing short of friendly, attentive, he was a good listener, and he seemed caring at my first appointment with him. He explained more about my diagnosis than anyone else has thus far. He showed me on the model and explained in great detail what our game plan would be and gave me options. The procedure went great. I am pleased thus far. It's an ongoing thing so we will see how it all goes but so far I have confidence in this doctor. Keep in mind pain management doctors are here to help you to manage your pain and that should include trying to diagnose and treat the source of the pain. Not to simply mask the pain by taking narcotic pain meds. Many of us who have multiple illnesses with chronic pain do not take these types of pain meds. Most doctors will not prescribe new patients narcotic pain medication especially now with the declared opioid epidemic. Unless it's a dire situation or for surgery. And rightly so. So, before you look to pain management doctors for this type of resolution you should ask yourselves whether you actually wanna be pain free or whether you are self medicating for another reason. I agree with the reviews here regarding the arrogance of this doctor. I only met him once, during an initial office visit, and did not become a patient. So I cannot speak to his skills. I normally take Yelp reviews in my stride and give people the benefit of the doubt. I believe that people have good days and bad days, and I try not to let the reviews sway me, one way or another. But when I met this doctor, I immediately reflected on the reviews here and felt they are spot on. In general, I found this doctor to be arrogant and unjustifiably self important. He also lacks compassion for people, such as myself, who are in pain. In particular, I draw attention to the review of Evangline G of 5/18/17, a wheelchair bound patient. I can only imagine how exasperating that experience must have been for her. I feel for her. I can actually picture this doctor telling her that her conduct was "unbecoming." What a jerk. I also reference potential new patients to the review written by Annah Li on 4/14/16, wherein she stated that compassion in this specialty is paramount, and this doctor completely lacks it. (I am paraphrasing, of course. But that was the gist of what she said). She also discussed how much time she felt she had wasted, and time she lost from work, going to see him. Her experience paralled mine. I guess not much as changed in 3 years. Perhaps this doctor should read and heed these reviews. And, look inward and make some changes. I am giving this office 2 stars rather than one star because his staff was very helpful and did their best to get me in as soon as they could. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Charbonnet since November 2013 due to transverse myelitis/paralysis but I will never go back. I already found another doctor for my next visits. On May 1, 2017, I had my regular visit. During my prior visit on March 5th, he had ordered a surprise drug blood test. This is the type that needs to be done ASAP so I went ahead to the Glendale Adventist Medical Center lab where he wanted it done. They took my blood and everything. However, when the doctor came in, he asked me if I took the blood test. I answered yes. He looked in the computer and he said I didn't. I simply insisted I did. Then he said, "I'm supposed to police you. What will the DEA say if you said you went but there's nothing on file. They will say you're lying". Wow, but I still kept my cool and asked him to call the lab. In a few minutes, his office staff came to me and said the hospital adviced that my last procedure was August 2016. Lie! I went out of the room to the reception and asked that I call myself. I told them that I was there, they took my blood, I had signed HIPAA and assignment forms, how can they deny I wasn't there? This is not a regular blood test. It is to prove whether I'm on drugs or not and it is very essential for me getting my much needed narcotics to contain unbearable pain. Thrice was I admitted to ER already for lack of or ineffective pain meds and even a dose missed could be disastrous. The lab staff told me that they cancelled the order because of insufficient specimen. They said they left a message for me. Now I remember someone left a message but they didn't say what it was for. I'm a tax preparer and that was my busiest time and I thought it's one of my many clients from the hospital so I thought they should instead call my office, not my personal number. I told the lab supervisor they left a message, didn't get a call back and simply dropped the test without further communicating with me or the doctor? First of all, it's their fault that there wasnt enough blood drawn from me! I was getting mad and my voice was getting louder. I admit that was my mistake but don't we all lose control sometimes when provoked? Dr. Charbonnet came to me with a livid face and told me twice, "This is so unbecoming. Either you get out or go inside"! He was asking I leave or go inside the room. I apologised but he said it one more time. I obligingly went inside the room and continued my conversation with the lab Supervisor who has then realised the severity of their cover-up and she was very apologetic. Dr. Charbonnet came to the room and said he'll just give me one month prescription and give me another blood test order. By then, it was almost 5pm and my ride, Access Paratransit, was coming at 5:40pm so it would be impossible for me to go. Now getting sweet, he said I could do it the following day and just settle the dispute with hospital outside because he doesn't want drama. "I know you're not a bad person otherwise, we wouldn't have worked together this long". He has done an epic damage control! But I didn't go to the blood test nor do I plan to go back. On the side note, his long time assistant, Eric, did apologize before I left. He's one good reason to go there and the only one who stays. There seems to be a high turnover rate of his medical assistants. I wonder why. I was so disturbed and hurt by the incident, I couldn't sleep for 3 days, my body was so stiff and painful for several more days. My conclusion: Dr. Charbonnet is a very arrogant doctor. First, he almost blatantly charged me with lying about going for the blood test. Second, he had extremely overreacted by shouting to me that I get out considering I'm wheelchair bound despite my apology. Now going back, I realized he's always been arrogant and unaccomodating. There was an instance where I got admitted to ER the night before for extreme pain, dropped by his office if I could get prescription for the stronger meds he had been prescribing me as needed but was adviced he couldn't give prescription without office visit. They don't accept emergency appointments at all, I've proven that a few times and if you rely on their regular scheduling, expect 3 to 4 weeks wait. This is a profession that requires compassion and clearly Dr. Charbonnet doesn't have that. Sorry to say! read more

They told me the doctor does not call patients back or does email, essentially unable to communicate with him. Dr. Charbonnet is the best doctor I have ever known & I have had many doctors in my life. I have had RSD for 10 years & had come to California to stay with my girlfriend to heal up from an auto accident that resulted in several injuries including a hangmans fracture. I have not been the easiest patient through all of my difficult tribulations. Doc hung in there with me when I probably would have given up & sent me on my way. He always went the extra mile, very compassionate, extremely talented doctor. I wanted to write a really good review about Dr. Christopher Charbonnet , because I think that when people leave after having a good experience they don't think about leaving good comments about someone. Unfortunately, I was very hesitant in going to see this doctor because of some of the previous reviews but I'm glad I trusted my referring doctor and went to him for my neck epidural/steroid injection. Dr. Charbonnet was absolutely fabulous. He was kind, informative and made me feel like he wasn't rushed. He explained everything that he was doing and seem to have a caring attitude. I would say he has an absolutely wonderful bedside manner. My procedure was minimally painful at best. He was careful and explaining every single part of the procedure as he went along. Not everyone is happy with the doctor or the office staff, but not everyone is willing to spend their precious time being open and honest about their concerns..I can tell you their lack of compassion and arrogance was witnessed by me during my visit in December 2015. Luckily, I only had to go to this doctor one time...but once was enough because it took too much work on my part to get anything accomplished. I received no assistance whatsoever because he no longer would accept my insurance (after Dec. 2015), and he was not wanting to build a relationship with me. Perhaps, if he had shown compassion and concern I would have taken his advice and changed my insurance to a company he accepts, but since he and his staff caused me such grief I chose otherwise. I was referred to Dr. Charbonnet by another doctor at the Glendale Adventist Spine institute for the chronic pain that I was having in my lower back and I was asked to do an MRI and then see Dr. Charbonnet for pain management. All I can say, is that this doctor is not interested in patients, and he is arrogant. I went to see him twice and both times he barely looked at me while talking, he did not examine me and just asked questions and put the answers in the computer . My mother has a herniated disk and needs an epidural. The inept office staff forgot to send in the MRI scan when they filed the paperwork to my mother's insurance company, so of course insurance denied the claim. So my mother has to wait even longer to get an epidural. In the meantime, she's just been admitted to the ER because the pain is too great. She had to be picked up in an ambulance. Thanks Dr. Charbonnet. Oh, I forgot to mention...his staff straight up lied to my mother, telling her they sent the MRI scan to the insurance company when in fact they didn't. My mother asked his office to send her the paperwork that they sent to her insurance company, so they did. The fax cover page says 6 pages were sent to insurance, but she received 8 pages from the doctor's office. Where did those extra 2 pages come from? Oh yea, the MRI scan, which is two pages long, that his office tacked on to the attachment they sent my mother. Classy move. read more

My mother has spinal stenosis and she was crying from the pain she couldn't walk, she couldn't move or do anything but lay still until we found Dr. Charbonnet. I had chronic lower back pain on both sides for months. I was referred by my HMO group Lakeside to a "pain specialist". After finally getting an appointment and authorizations for a facet joint injection for lower back pain his office substituted a different doctor to do the procedure! OR, I could wait another couple weeks. That replacement doctor wasnt even on the approved list with my HMO! And he gave me real attitude when at the procedure (first time meeting him) he was offended that I was asking questions about his background and experience! " I'm not here to be interviewed by you" Also Dr K's office only got authorization for one side of my spine injection. After 8 weeks they STILL could not get the authorization for the other side. Told ME to contact the insurer who wanted more information. What could I tell them that the doctor's office couldnt? So FOUR months after the first injection and no progress on getting the authorization for the other side, I changed Groups out of Lakeside and found another pain specialist doctor who was able to get BOTH sides of my spine authorized in 3weeks. read more

Dr Charbonnet is the best doctor ever and I'm so happy I was eventually referred to him! I had suffered chronic upper back pain on one side and had tried everything to fix it: physical therapy, chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, you name it. When I came to Dr Charbonnet he instantly made me feel at ease with a clear, logical game plan. First we tried a local injection to see if that gave any relief. When it didn't, the next step was to do a steroid injection in my neck and he said if that worked then we knew the issue was nerve related and we could then do a longer term solution with a rhizotomy, which we ultimately did. Having this step by step plan explained to me in such an easy to understand manner really gave me confidence that I wouldn't be stuck with this pain forever. It's been almost a year now, and I've been completely pain free! He is one of the kindest, SMARTEST doctors I've been to and I am truly lucky I found him and he healed me. My spouse has used Dr. Charbonnet's services for pain management for three years. Never ONCE have we had any personnel behave rudely, and never once has the physician been anything but intelligent, informative, and helpful.
