I didn't receive notice of Mr. Abernathy's response to my review at the time it posted. Recently I became aware of it and appreciated him taking the time to reply. It led me to calling again to schedule a consult. Mr. Abernathy is away for 2 weeks so I was willing to have a consult with his associate, Ashley Carlson, and scheduled for today, 3/20/25. Due to the nature of my illnesses and with Ashley's permission, I put my phone on speaker so my caregiver could take notes which I could review later if needed. Ashley came on strong and harsh right out of the gate, playing devil's advocate, without any finesse of experienced attorneys. Without having access to my original divorce, she declared that I don't have a case to pursue an RFO. Incredible assessment. Scary lawyering. This was an embarrassment for her as it showed her lack of Calif Family Law knowledge. My case has been in play for quite some time now, BTW. She also contradicted the judges who've been presiding over my case plus the expertise of 3 notable Family Law attorneys with whom Ashley claimed to have a great deal of professional interaction. I'll be letting them know how wrong they all are per Ashley Carlson. She was also unaware of the largest legal assistance agency in San Bernardino County which was a first. Every attorney I've consulted with or utilized knows this organization. They were responsible for my botched divorce leading me down this stressful path. Ashely's behavior didn't go unnoticed by my caregiver who was appalled at Ashley's shrill interrogation of me and her renouncing of the opinions and actions of the above mentioned notable attorneys. She was shocked by Ashley's rude demeanor and constantly cutting me off. She was baffled by Ashley stating she didn't have the facts of my case yet making a decisive statement that it was over the statute and couldn't be pursued. Ashley, if your only gear is a mechanically defective pile driver screeching its way to destruction, you are a doing a disservice to female professionals and female attorneys everywhere, not to mention the Abernathy Law Firm. Treat other humans better. Especially we who are not the opposition and who are willing to pay you well for your services. But not this time. Ashley isn't deserving of any more of my time or energy so I'll stop referencing her now. I went against my gut feeling that told me not to hire this joke of an attorney, twice. My criminal attorney suggested abernathy to me though. Before I hired him he was rude to my mother who called for a consult as well. This was the worst referral my criminal attorney could have ever given me. During my $200 consult, he rushed me, was driving (but said he was taking notes), and said you have to have money and patience. Let me be perfectly clear, Christopher Abernathy is a horrible attorney. If you are considering him, do not, you will regret it. You will waste precious time that you don't have, you will waste money, your case will be WORSE off due to him either siding with opposing counsel, not having any idea what your case is about or who you are. And most importantly, you will lose your most precious treasure in life, your children. You need to take all the negative reviews very seriously, they are correct. They actually don't describe fully just how awful this attorney truly is. He is extremely disrespectful, never shuts his mouth except while in front of a judge, and literally yelled and berated my mother and I for asking questions immediately after my hearing on 5/8. I spoke to another attorney, he said well usually only rich people retain him. I sense this attorney's specialty is high asset divorce, nothing more. He knows he doesn't have to do much and he will get paid hopefully for years during those cases. If you have a complicated child custody case he will 100% lose your case and definitely not improve it. I had false domestic violence and child abuse allegations by the o.p in juvenile dependency, which gave final orders in family court. I had minimum of 2 hours a week supervised visits. chris had his horrible paralegal jerome mallard (no prior paralegal experience by the way) write my ex parte to return custody of my children, which chris didn't defend, and didn't know the details of, chris didn't read the declaration his paralegal wrote. That's how much he doesn't care. During the hearing the judge looked to chris to speak, and he didn't. The judge looked at him said the case name and ex parte by chris, and he still didn't speak. The judge then said, well.. this is your ex parte (waiting for him to speak). chris finally embarrassingly spoke, and said im not going to bore the court you have what we wrote. The judge asked why did the o.p terminate his paid supervisor? chris didn't answer and motioned as if he didn't know (letter from o.p attached to filing). I told chris I want more time, I can do 20 hours each weekend alone. abernathy ignored everything I told him. He said sorry judge I couldn't hear my client is talking to me. Now I am worse off than I was before hiring abernathy, which was at the beginning of April. He wasted the entire month of April supposedly working on my case (ex parte), delaying my case only to decrease my visitation hours on May 8. A whole month went by with me not being able to schedule a visit with my children. All jerome did was write a declaration (30 days?). The opposing party's attorney filed their response declaration in 1 day. He didn't say one word to go against the judge's suggestion of lesser visitation hours a month. The painful truth, I had sole physical custody all my children's lives and raised them, while their absent mother lived 500 miles away, had another child it abandoned, and kidnapped my children and made false cps & police reports to steal custody. Abernathy started shouting in the hallways right after court, everyone could hear him, he's an idiot. One admin worker told him to go somewhere else that she could hear him from very far away and he started arguing with her. I couldn't even get a full question in because he was constantly shouting in my face as if we were in the middle of a conversation but I had not even finished one question. The whole time I was trying to figure out what is wrong with him, such immature & bizarre behavior. I later realized he was trying to incite a negative reaction from me to claim conflict of interest and quit my case, because he doesn't want any case that is remotely difficult, he is lazy, just like the majority of attorneys. When he didn't get the reaction he needed from me to remove himself from my case he offered to refund my entire 10k retainer. I waited until today when his return-transfer to me finally cleared (3 days) to write his review. That's why he returned my entire retainer, in hopes I wouldn't write a review revealing how pathetic of an attorney he is and how his malpractice made my child custody case worse. read more

Chris said something very powerful during his initial consultation with my partner, "you get what you deserve" in reference to the poor representation his possible client to be was describing with prior counsel . And he was right, if your indecisive, petty, unable to see the big picture your , head not in the game your already a loser, your head space makes your case, and attracts your experience. Pettiness is allowing opposing counsel or the other individual to effect your head space and act out of fear, or desperation. I was just as petty in thought before Chris said you get what you deserve, it changed the whole perspective for me. My partner is a victim of DV, he attracted representation he needed protection from, read that again...... I stepped into "protect "him from his own lawyers. After thousands of dollars ,two years down the road, 3 attorney's later, and a direct change to the thought process of the outcome brought him Chris. To date he has been the first Aty to verbally tell opc to STFU, with his clients best interest in mind. I interviewed 17 different firms with my partner, even after talking to Chris, because they were paid for. It was his honesty and straightforward approach and "you get what you deserve comment that matched my partners vibration (NOW). He will also not speak ill of anyone , this is typically a sales tactic of a lawyer to agree with your grievance to make you feel heard, and cared for, Not him. And that says something about his being. He has also had the same staff mostly for over 10 years , no one is going to work for an asshole for that long, that means he cares about his people and he invests in there growth within his firm, again another character trait of a good human. He gives you his cell phone number....onboarding is organized , you have an app to look at your paper work, communication is limited/fast when there is and that's good cause talking cost money. They charge one fee for in office calls and stamps and such, most are changing you $30 for there senior paralegal to lick a stamp. When your ready to win give him a call. And winning is what is in the best interest for all parties , that's why lady justice has a scale...Know this now and surrender to it. The outcome is in your mind, when you have unreasonable expectations , you attract unreasonable people and experiences. If you talk to him and your offended your not ready or you full of shit. Mr. Abernathy and his team are amazing. My ex is a malignant narcissist, if you know anything about such people, I pray for you. I asked a friend for a referral. He referred Mr. Abernathy, his ex-wife's attorney. He said he was honest and fair and said he is the one I NEED. A few days later I was chatting with a stranger and somehow, we started talking about my "situation". Turns out she was an attorney. She said you NEED Christopher Abernathy. At my consultation he was very straight forward. He seemed laser focused and does let you know worst case scenario. I was scared. I'm still scared. If you have a narcissist for a spouse, you need Chris and his team, he sees right through it all. My ex won't quit and Chris does not back down. He immediately wanted me to get a TRO. But I was too scared of my ex and scared what the courts would think. Would they believe me, would they care? My ex fought date of separation, so I couldn't get court date for almost a year. Ridiculous but you have to stay the course and work the process, Chris told me. Again, as my husband would drive by, taunt me, etc. Mr. Abernathy and his staff stood by me and tried to keep me calm. And would still advise me to get a TRO. Ashley did a deposition with my ex. My ex thinks he is smarter than everyone or can bully them into submission. When I read the transcript, I felt in shock. She did an amazing job. He doesn't like to be told what to do and especially by a woman. A smart, young intelligent woman that just grilled him. I could read his anger on the pages. At trial, Wow Mr. Abernathy's presence gives you a calmness in a high anxiety situation. I had no idea what was going to happen, just that I needed to sit calmly and answer truthfully. Seems pretty simple but my husband is quite volatile, even in a court of law. From the first question Mr. Abernathy asked my husband I thought he was going to fly out of the witness seat. Chris knows how to get the truth to be shown. My ex would lie and Chris wasn't having it. He just boxed him in. WOW was he mad. He's not used to people standing up to him. He was staring Chris down so hard. And yelling. Chris was completely calm just firmly asking him questions. Mr. Abernathy had complete control of the situation. Ran circles around apposing counsel. His knowledge of the law is amazing to watch. Each day of trial my husband's behavior became more aggressive towards Mr. Abernathy, he's demeanor never wavered, complete professional. There's is just too much to tell here, but you need to know that if you have an abusive, narcissist ex you need Mr. Abernathy and his team. I first hired Mr Abernathy in spring 2015 to defend me against an emergency restraining order that the other party had filed. He came highly recommended to me from several individuals I trust and did not disappoint. He easily and justly got the restraining order dismissed. It was quite an experience to watch him in court. I was in the process of petitioning my husband when our immigration lawyer discovered serious allegations proposed by my husband's ex-wife that could have had negative effects on the process. Although my husband was already divorced in the country they officially got married in, we were unsure if the state of California would acknowledge their divorce. Our immigration lawyer needed us to find a California state attorney that would be willing to clear his name and get the court to recognize their out of country divorce. It wasn't easy. A lot of the attorneys that were contacted refused to take the case. Chris however agreed to represent us, and we could not be any more satisfied with the results. Sure, it was a lengthy process, but COVID played a major part in the delay and despite the fact, Chris and his staff kept us to up to date. My husband and I do not live state side, but Chris was always accommodating with phone conferences to include speaking with our immigration lawyer when necessary. I had high hopes that I was going to get help with getting my custody and child support from a previous lawyer figured out. Chris came highly recommended and I was confident I would be putting a retainer down during my consultation today. I was very sadly disappointed. Chris made me feel terrible for the conditions that were previously set in my case, so bad that I started crying. He was impatient when I didn't understand the correct legal terms he was using. At the end, he turned to his computer, crunched some numbers, handed me back my paperwork and basically kicked me out of his office. I didn't even get to ask the rest of my questions. $150 for 20 minutes of shaming... save your money! There are more kind and compassionate lawyers out there. Wow! I was referred to Chris by an employer/friend and wow! Chris has been a godsend during my divorce. Super disappointed. I called three times and left voice messages every single time. Never received a call back from anyone. Even left my email and no one bothered to contact me on any portal. Was referred by multiple friends and family who said they had a great experience but I can't say the same since I couldn't even get someone on the phone. Update!
