Have driven by this place many times and have never stopped. Saw them on a donut list and figured we should give them a try. The food inside is definitely better than the look of them outside. We got a jelly filled donut, chocolate eclair, a sausage cheese kolache, jalapeño sausage cheese kolache, a boudin kolache, and chocolate milk. Our total was between $9-10 (around $7 without the milk), which I thought was very reasonable. The eclair and boudin kolache were huge (see pic with hand to scale). The other two kolaches and donut were average sized. The donut was not my favorite, but the eclair was great and the kolaches were buttery and delicious. The star of the meal was the boudin kolache! Donuts are the perfect cure to the Monday blues. I was in town this weekend and stopped here for kolaches and donuts on our way out of town. Let me start by saying you can smell donuts from down the block. The staff was friendly and very busy with customers in and out. I am happy I stumbled in here! I tried a dozen donuts, each one a different kind. The cake donuts were moist, the right density, slightly crisp on the outside, perfectly sweet, delightful. Yeast donuts were fairly light, good texture, not quite as sweet, the glazing was great, the frosted ones didn't add any value for me. Filled lemon and filled raspberry were excellent, same quality yeast donut and a jam /curd that was slightly tart and refreshing. They also gave me three donut holes for free, which were surprisingly light, even better than the yeast donuts in my opinion. I kept it simple and got two glazed donuts, and they were pretty delicious. Warming them up wouldn't be such a bad idea, but it was just what I needed. And they were so kind to put two donut holes in with that! That made me smile. The kolaches are also really good, with my favorite being the sausage one. If I feel a little hungry, I'll get that. Ok, I've lived in Houston for quite a while and have driven by this place, a thousand times. I went today and was glad I did. I rarely get a desire to eat a donut, but sometimes a donut is all that will fill a hole requesting sugary goodness. The place was busy around 10 AM, but makes sense as to why- these donuts are really good. Honestly, the best I've had in Houston. I'm not a fan of Shipley's, Krispy Kreme is only exceptional just outside Fort Bragg, and Dunkin never has what I want. Ok, so the place was busy, but they keep the lines moving fast. So what I thought would be 10 to 20 minutes wait, was really about a minute and a half. Really fast. The donuts are fresh and you can see them being made. As this was my first time here, I bought a few. The Sausage, Cheese, and Jalapeno kolache was really good. It's not ginormous, so you probably won't need to split it. Really good meat to "bun" ratio. Not gummy when chewed. Spice level was pretty mild. Definetely liked this. Blueberry cake donut. Really good. Crisp outside, not over glazed, and good mix of blueberries. This is definetely one you should try if you like blueberries. Bear claw- so this threw me off. Many times if you ask for a bear claw, you get a long John or filled bar. That's what I was expecting this time, but no. You get a legit bear claw donut (no bears were harmed in making the donuts). This was a surprise for two reasons... It was not what I initially wanted (i wanted the filled bar) but I didn't say anything and figured why not. I just asked for a filled bar also. But trying this... Best donut, I've ever had. Not kidding. Crisp exterior with just a touch of crunch. Apple filling. The donut was cooked perfectly inside and out. I ate this and now regret not taking my time with it. Seriously. If I moved to Alaska, I'd pay stupid money to have these shipped. And bare knuckle fight a Kodiak bear for these- and triumph. Do you see what I'm hinting at? These are outstanding. Great place for donuts or kolaches. They have a $4 minimum for credit cards and you would be surprised how hard it is for you to hit $4 here if you are alone! Grabbed 3 donuts and 6 donut holes for less than $3. The donuts are super yummy and soft. The blueberry old fashion is awesome and doesn't taste super fried like some other donut shops do. I got the jumbo sausage cheese kolache and was underwhelmed by the sausage to bread ratio. The price was better than I expected given it being near Montrose. Arrived a little after 5:30 AM on Friday, there were a few customers in front of me, it was apparent these were regular customers after seeing their interaction with the employees. I'm trying to find that special early morning donut shop, this place tops my list in Houston up to this point, there are a number of things that works well here in my opinion. 1st - Fairly large private parking lot with easy access from a number of directions, with Christy's corner lot location getting in out of here is quick and painless. 2nd - Great Service, plenty of help on hand ensures the wait here will be short, the glass cases were filled with all the offerings on the menu board, there's no doubt this place gets slammed during rush hour. so if you find your wait is longer than you planned for, my advice is get here earlier. 3rd - This place was clean, very clean, granted its 5:30 AM so the crowds haven't arrived yet but still there were two employees, wiping down the tables, wet mopping the floors, cleaning the rugs and sweeping the outside walkway and storefront. 4th - "Hot Glazed Donuts", this might be attributed to the early morning hour, or the fact that I did ask for them hot, maybe they would of been taken from the case instead of being passed from the kitchen if I hadn't requested them hot, I'll never know because I always request plain glazed donuts hot. Like all businesses I am sure there are some negative things you can find here from time to time if you're looking through a microscope, but the effort is definitely here, after all it's a donut shop and customers come in waves. Epic fail this morning. And by that I mean one star is so generous and benevolent like you would only see from the King of Albion, or because Yelp will not let you subtract stars from other peoples' reviews of this place and all subsequent reviews in the future. Failbus. The tables were dirty when I walked in this morning. There was one guy in line before me and that was all in the store - how hard is it to keep a small place clean in the morning with ample staff behind the counter seemingly doing nothing? Failboat. The cheese on the sausage jalapeno kolache was stringy while being rubbery, sparse, and not flavorful at all. I question the quality of the supermarket's dealbuster 'o the day recently expired so it is still super-cheap "Kraft cheese singles" package that this cheese came out. I also question how the cheese manages to not just be bad, but to be fixatingly atrocious and stand out this much when proportionally the sausage, the jalapeno, and the bread are supposed to (in theory) overwhelm the little old cheese. Failasaurus rex. The bread on the sausage jalapeno was tough, chewy, had no hints of sweetness, and tastes like something disgusting even David Hasselhoff drunk on the floor would spit on out of disgust as he rejects it furiously if offered as the bread option on his hamburger. Failbucket. The sausage/jalapeno was a further failing point when biting into it, since from the exterior (photograph attached) it looks fine. No jalapeno flavor at all, none. Sausage flavor? Not smoky, not flavorful, it tastes like Spam on a bad day (or a good day - is there really a difference?) It was just there, like eating a big bowl of air. It was not tasty, it was not a unique flavor. But the menu behind the counter did not lie, the kolache did have a filling. Failbox. The blueberry cake donut, their masterpiece remember? Glazing oozed on to excess apparently, flaking off on my keyboard and all over my clothes. Blueberry cake smell? None. Blueberry awesomeness? Diminished, perhaps non-existent. Failharbor. The icing on the cake (donut?) was being referred to as "Ma'am" by the cashier when ringing up my failtastic order. The state of Texas is absolutely convinced I am male, or so they affirm on my driver's license. Law enforcement officers utilize "Sir" when addressing me. It wasn't the language barrier here, as confusing as you know, gender salutations and pronouns can be at times for native speakers of English even. I wasn't wearing a dress or other attire to raise the inference that my gender identity was in question. I am not sure if the cashier meant it as an insult that the way I ordered kolaches and donuts made me as gay as the day is long - or if it was just a careless accident because the cashier came to work stoned. But no damage control? Wow. Failjob. In the free market businesses that want to stay open have a duty to serve their neighborhood's identity. I bashed La Mexicana on Fairview pretty hard recently because my waiter made me feel very uncomfortable and I wasn't even out on a gay date calling attention to our table with questionably PG-13 rated displays of public affection, I was just out with another dude for a tex-mex dinner. By that same token I extend a similar warning about Christy's - if you are not comfortable with who you are, do not come here. If I was not comfortable with who I was I would spend the rest of the day worrying about my voice, my gestures, the shirt I am wearing, and everything else about me. I walked out and raced to my office to come slam them online with this review, but that's really as much as it would affect me. If you are going to care more than that, find another donut/kolache/breakfast food shop (preferably a chain restaurant that has some corporate accountability to have heads roll when a peon pisses you off.) That is the risk you run when you go to a local place, there is not going to be any contrition. But all of my breakfast food budget and fancy kolache binge eating party business at the office will return further down the road back to Kolache Factory. Failathon. Christy's = Failwhale. read more

It's been a long time coming, subculture fans, but your rotund reviewer has enjoyed Christy's Donuts so much for so long that it seemed only fitting to wait until there was time to write a review which, hopefully, will begin to do them proper justice. A donut is a donut is a donut, unless it's made with particular care at a family-run business which decorates its otherwise Spartan establishment with photos of smiling customers and staff and glowing testimonial letters from institutions which have hit up the owner, "Sean," for a donut donation. And, as an aside, for you folks who keep asking for donations, I have just two words: STOP IT. These people are at work at 2 a.m. each and every day of the week, making delicious fresh donuts, sausage kolaches and croissants, etc. However worthy your cause, surely your supporters can scrape together the cost of a donut rather than pan-handling a family of hard-working immigrant small business owners. The profit margin on donuts isn't huge, and even if it was, asking a business man to give away his product when it would cost you, at most, a few bucks to buy it yourself ought to just flat out embarrass you. OK, end of digressive rant. Now, about the donuts: cake donuts, glazed, iced and plain...old fashioned, with or without chocolate...cinnamon crumb that is the best looking and tasting donut of its exotic breed you are ever likely to have...maple and chocolate bars...awesome bear claws and apple fritters...filled donuts...perfect buttery flaky croissants...for certain holidays, specially shaped theme donuts (evergreen silhouettes at Christmas time, hearts for Valentine's Day--now they just need a Texas-shaped donut for March 2nd and April 21st, an Alamo donut for March 6th, etc.). The savory offerings are every bit as good, and in some cases better: sausage kolaches, regular and jalapeno---sausage croissants, link and patty (the latter with or without egg and cheese)...the only real stumble are the breakfast tacos, premade with egg, potato, meat and cheese. They're good, but come on, this is Houston, with a 40% Hispanic population--I'll make you a deal: don't go to Asian donut shops expecting to find the best breakfast taco in town and I won't go to Mexican taquerias looking for awesome donuts. And these ARE awesome donuts. To get to them, park in the donut shop's lot at the corner of West Gray and Montrose, or at the pawn shop parking lot next door, then enter one of the two doors of the establishment. The glass display case stands between the two doors and half way in between them hangs a sign marking the "front" of the two-ended line. So go in either way, meet in the middle, and politely defer to those who were there before you. Proper queuing technique is a sign of a civilized society. Don't be a pushy, selfish asshole. Be sure to let them know that you want your donuts in a basket if you plan to eat them in the small, no-frills dining area, otherwise your order will be packed in paper bags. Give your donut orders first, then end with the savory stuff, which they may have to go to the kitchen to get, and will need to warm in the microwave in any case. Then sit, or depart, and savor the fruits of someone else's early morning labors. Giving change or a sausage kolache to the polite, nonthreatening homeless guy who hangs out in the parking lot is optional. OK, that's enough of a primer for something as simple as obtaining a donut. I've heard good things about Christy's Donuts, and now that I live right down the street, I thought I would give the place a try. There was a line of about 10 people inside, but the wait wasn't long at all. The menu has a large variety of things: multiple types of donuts, croissants, kolaches, etc. I ordered glazed donuts, strawberry filled donuts, and one blueberry muffin. My total came out to a little over 4 dollars. They also threw in a few donuts holes with the donuts and also with the muffin. The donuts were average and the blueberry muffin was almost devoid of any blueberries. The blueberry muffin was also hard and just didn't taste good at all. Like my previous neighborhood's donut shop, Christy's has credit card purchase restrictions. Visa and MasterCard are accepted, but only with orders over 4 dollars. The average donuts, bad blueberry muffin, and credit card restriction almost insure that I probably won't be going back to Christy's anytime soon. read more

Now that I've had the chance to try Christy's donuts and kolaches, I'm ready for review time. Christy's Donuts is not the type of place that tries to impress you based on their looks. In fact, it looks like a pretty run down building from the outside. While most donut shops aren't spectacular, this is a grab-and-go type place even though they have some tables. I've had their kolaches and they are your typical kolaches. Nothing special but solid and I love kolaches. As far as their donuts, they don't have any of the crazy donuts you see at some shops with bacon or cereal but they have all of the classics. I got a half of dozen for my office: 2 glazed, 2 blueberry cake, 1 bavarian cream, and 1 strawberry filled. The strawberry filled was decent but the strawberry filling tasted too artificial. I enjoyed their blueberry cake a lot more which is one of their most popular and had a great texture. Their classic glazed is also a good choice. They gave me two free donut holes which they seem to give to everyone based on the number of donuts you order. A nice touch that's appreciated! Parking can be an issue at peak times but people move in and out quickly. read more

Ok, so I FINALLY found out what all the hub-bub was about. Every single time I have passed this place, the parking lot is packed. I have always seen lines in there so I have never stopped because I hate long lines going into work. The other day, however, was my sign to stop because the parking lot was completely empty (woohoo) so I stopped. I ordered 4 sausage kolaches, a cinnamon twist, a regular donut & a chocolate covered old-fashioned buttermilk donut. I was incredibly surprised by the price because I know the exact the exact items would have been more at Shipley's. First of all, let's dissect the kolache: I hate smokey sausages (where I come from, there is actual link sausage cut into huge pieces), but I will say that the bread on these kolaches totally took my attention away from the smokey. The bread is so much better than Shipleys: it is fluffy and even flaky and has a really great flavor. The sausage didn't taste bad either so I was please. The cinnamon twist is bigger here and much cheaper and tasted great a well as our other donuts. My co-worker had ranted & raved about their croissant sandwiches so this morning I stopped; the lot was full, but one spot was open. I ordered a sausage, egg & cheese for her; and I ordered a turkey & cheese for myself. EPIC FAIL: the croissants are so dense and heavy and have like a factory taste to them. They did not taste fresh or made in house; I have never had a dense croissant ever. I hate to say this, but Burger King's factory croissant is better than this. My sandwich had egg that I did not ask for AND was totally overdone and dark brown. The turkey looked like ham and was paper thin (I posted a pic). My co-worker's sausage was a total joke and fail: they sausage patty was so small that they tried to cover it up by add a small add'l piece under it, lol (pic also posted). I will NEVER get these again. My only other complaint is about the woman that attended to me this morning: she asked me WAY too many times to repeat what I asked for like she didn't understand me AND I asked her to put the fritter in a separate bag, which she didn't do. I asked her for another bag for the fritter, and she gave me the smallest bag she could give me and walked away; the fritter is WAY too big for that bag. Plus she chunked my bag with the sandwiches down and didn't offer me a plastic bag to put all my bags in either like everyone else. The girl that waited on me the other day was WAY nicer and considerate. On the bright side, the devils food donut is amazing! I also bought my coworker an apple fritter that was huge and smelled phenomenal. So in the end, I think I will make this place my go-to place for donuts and kolaches but not the sandwiches. My fiance's place is only a 3-5min drive from this place. Say goodbye to losing weight coz I'm going to be eating their scrumptious kolaches all day errrday Pros: -the price is unbelievably cheap!! Compared to the kolache factory, this place is almost half the price -food is so so good...we got their boudin kolache and sausage/cheese croissant. Omgah so good. Sitting here at Christy's, I must say I am enjoying the old school vibe of the place. It isn't a particularly gorgeous place, but for me I feel quite relaxed eating my donut/kolache and doing my word search puzzles, it's just one of those places. Christy's offers a huge selection of donuts, kolaches, and croissants that I was honestly overwhelmed. However it's hard to go wrong with a plain glazed donut, and it didn't disappoint! The donut was served warm, perfectly fried with a nice airyness in each bite covered with just the right amount of icing, not too sweet but just sweet enough! The donut holes tasted just as delicious as the donut, but maybe even yummier since it was FREE! We also got a boudain kolache which was packed with flavor but the texture of the "sausage" was off. The casing didn't give you that nice snap and the rice was a bit mushy, however the bread was spot on, just like their donuts! It's reasonably priced - I normally get a dozen 1/2 regular style and 1/2 cake donuts and it's less than $6. I've ordered their regular sized kolaches before and the bun is a little too buttery for me so I started opting for their jumbo kolaches which are delicious. The parking lot is a little dark esp early in the AM but mostly it's filled with kids during school time and some workers here and there. There are either 2 girls at the front or 1 girl and a guy. The guy is really nice. The girls are a hit and miss. Sometimes they are super unfriendly and other times they are moderately unfriendly but who cares - we want donuts.
