Dr. Yau has a kind, compassionate, and gentle manner and I am always pleasantly surprised when he takes a genuine interest in my life, what I've been up to, etc. answers all my questions, and doesn't rush with anything. (Which explains why nobody gets their appointment on time. :) ) I also appreciate the other staff. One time I had painful 2nd degree burns from an accident; couldn't really go anywhere, and one of the nurse practitioners "held my hand" through text messages, advising me on wound care at home. The same thing happened another time when I had an infected spider bite. My only minor complaint is how busy they are and sometimes phone calls are not returned, or questions take an extra phone call to be addressed.

My mother (an inpatient RN) was evaluated here for joint issues and was placed on two months of medical leave by her provider. However, when we requested completion of the SDI (DE 2501 Part B) form, the office refused and told us she needed to attend physical therapy first. We followed that instruction, only to have the physical therapy office clarify that they do not complete SDI certification--this must be done by the treating medical provider. When we returned, the front desk then insisted she would not qualify for disability, which is not their role to determine. Eligibility is decided by the California Employment Development Department, not administrative staff. This resulted in unnecessary delays, multiple visits, and completely avoidable confusion during a time-sensitive situation. More concerning is the lack of consistency--placing a patient on medical leave while simultaneously refusing to complete the required documentation does not make sense. Patients should not be sent back and forth or given incorrect information. If the office chooses not to complete disability forms, that policy should be clearly communicated upfront rather than shifting responsibility and providing misleading guidance. Just to be fair, the first NP encounter my mom had was pleasant and professional. But the administrative handling was disorganized and unprofessional. This process needs to be addressed.

The Nutri Eval and GI tests were especially eye opening and gave me a comprehensive look at my health that I would have never been able to get from the basic, standard blood tests (cholesterol, iron levels, etc) in a regular doctor's office. These tests have helped me change the way I eat and have helped me transform my health. The wait can sometimes be a bit long, but she really does take her time with you. She's down to earth and takes a balanced approach to medicine.

0 stars. I had the…read moresame thing happen in my in-person appointment with NP James Miyazaki as "Adri W"'s Yelp review below. The appointment was so unbelievably awful that it was hard to even write about it. Thank you, Adri, for putting it into words. It's sad to see that he is like this with others too. I'm sharing this so other patients are aware. For my appointment, I had actually seen my lab results on my own first, and wanted him to explain what they meant. I asked for simple clarification of one lab result, and he said "I can refer you to a specialist doctor if you want." Confused, I said, "I don't need an entire appointment with a specialist, I'm just trying to understand the basis of how you interpreted this lab result. He said going into that detail is above his pay grade. Then he asked if there was anything else, as if that's all there was to go over. I was surprised because the lab results clearly showed that I had another subpar lab result, so why was he talking like we were done. I said "Yes, my labs show I'm also low in ___, aren't you going to go over that with me?" He said he was about to, but that I was harping on the topic of my the first result... as if my earlier question was preventing him from going over my next result? Like, what? That was rude and really weird. Then he said I need more of a certain medication. I asked how much I should take. He quickly gave me an amount and seemed bothered like he wanted to leave. I had to say, "wait, I already take that amount and my results are still low." He just went, "Okay then take [higher amount]." If I didn't elaborate, he would've just left me with useless information. But he doesn't care. He's bothered if he has to explain anything beyond your lab numbers that are already on paper in front of you. The above took maybe 5 minutes. Then I tried to bring up that I've had a concerning health issue that's been going on for weeks, and as I did, he just got up and said, "I have to go now." I said, "What? No, I need to talk to you about this, I'm concerned." He was in such a hurry that I couldn't tell him any context like my health history (that ended up directly contributing to the issue), so he lazily just threw out, "I can recommend a [specialist]" (that wasn't even appropriate for my issue, which he would've known if he'd taken the time to ask anything about my background). I said, "Do you think I need one?" He shrugged and said, "Up to you." I said, "You're the nurse! How would I know if I need one?" He just shrugged at everything like some child who doesn't want to be held responsible for anything and wants you off his back. I couldn't believe what was happening. Then he just left! That he felt it was appropriate to just leave after 10 minutes total (and it was 45 minutes after my appointment start that he even came in to see me) without any warning of how much time we had left, and walking out the door as I was trying to bring up a concerning issue... I just couldn't comprehend what was happening. I'd never had any NP, PA, doctor, anyone do that before. No caring person in any profession would. I also was supposed to have another service done as part of my appointment, but he'd already walked out. Stunned, I went to the front desk and said, "He knows I still have questions, and I'm also scheduled to have this other service, but he just walked out!" The front desk knocked on his door, and he came back in to do it. What the hell? He didn't have time to address my earlier concern, but now he has time to do the other service? It was the worst medical interaction I've ever had. I had a medical issue concern and felt so abandoned and gaslit, like I was a burden for asking for reasonable clarification vs. just letting him spit useless superficial "advice" at me. I was so upset with everything that I never wanted to think about it again. Dr. Kaneko, you should know that NP James Miyazaki does not care about patients and does not help them in any way. And, like other patients have said, he talks over you and doesn't listen. Just like Adri W, I was getting upset because he was so dismissive from the start, and he can't seem to handle a patient showing any sign of upset. When I spoke in a concerned tone (rightfully so) with perfectly reasonable patient concerns, in response to the shallow, unhelpful information he provided... it's like he just shut down. He should not be practicing if he does not have the capacity nor care to treat patients and their concerns with respect.

I called this office in November to make an appointment as a new patient because they are the primary care doctor assigned to me on my medical plan. The earliest available appointment was a month out! And finally, after having patiently waited for a month, I checked in to my appointment and was told by front desk that they didn't take my insurance anymore! If anyone bothered to verify my info when I initially called, I would've easily called the insurance company and change the doctor and likely to get an earlier date. For a medical professional whose primary duty is to care and treat the ill, this level of careless and disregard to a patient's needs is angering to say the least! I'm glad I don't have a serious illness because otherwise I would been dead!
