I'm here at Oakland's iconic longtime Chubby Freeze. What a name! It's been here surviving independently, squashed in between the two giant burger chains of McDonald's and Burger King! The Chub survives! I'm taken here scouting out original Oakland dive restaurants, and this place has been here over 30 years. Maybe different owners during that time, but it survives as an Oakland original right next door to Burger King and McDonald's! Prices have increased of course in the last 30 years. A big burger combo served with a plate load of fries and a drink was just $3.50 back then I'm told. It's $11.00 now I think. Being down in the heart of East Oakland, this is probably not a place you might want to come after dark, unless you're armed I suppose. The food here is great. This isn't your gourmet angus, natural grass fed kind joint. It's a nice made to order burger and good fries. Not fancy inside at all. You come for the Oakland experience ... eat while keeping one eye on your vehicle. It's retro in an Okland way and I hope it continues to survive.

Oakland favorite only downfall is you have to add cheese to everything Everything is made to order so everything comes piping hot I also ordered onion rings(not pictured) If you want some good food this is a go to but don't expect to get a full meal for 5 dollars Happy Yelping

It's supposed to be a bacon cheeseburger but they put the bacon on top of my paper wow

I sure hate that I like this place bacon cheeseburger because this lady need to fire her staff and get new people they suck they mess up your order then have the nerve to get mad if you ask them to repeat your order back to you they say oh my God They put you on hold and don't come back oh and they charge you different prices too depending on who it is unless you pay attention yes I was charged two different prices for the same thing that I get all the time they need to have better customer service is all I'm saying the service has went down at a great little food place be careful who you hire make sure they care about your business or care about needing a job

    Strawberry milkshake

We stopped here for a strawberry milkshake as I've been meaning to stop here for a while now since I've seen it going to the airport quite a bit. It is fenced off between McDonald's and Burger King so it can be easy to miss but it was worth the effort to make it there. The milkshake itself was great, but about a third of the cup was fresh strawberries so it was difficult to enjoy without a spoon. The syrup used for the strawberries was a bit too sweet for me but the shake itself was tasty. My only complaint is that the indoor seating was closed even though the lights in there were on. Additionally, the outside seating area was not well-maintained because there was visible trash and what not. There were only two people working there so that can be difficult to clean up, but that makes eating there a possible issue.

FISH And CHIPS? This is what I purchased for 8.99! 5 Slimmy Fish Sticks and too many Cold Fries!

Fish and Chips? This is what you get for $8.99! 5 Slimmy Fish Sticks and too Many Fries! I am so disappointed

Quick, clean and affordable! I've lived in the Bay my whole life and the burgers remind me of 1/4 Burgers (that are evaporating because of gentrification). It's close to the OAK Airport and any time I'm in the area, I try to stop by. 1) They give you a mountain of fries, and every time they're piping hot! 2) Their cheeseburgers aren't too expensive and you can add bacon. 3) The milkshakes are delicious and they have over 10 different flavors. 4) I've only had the burger/fries and shake, but they have a diverse menu from tacos, chicken tenders, fish sandwiches etc.

Great spot for a quick burger/sandwich fix. Fries are crinkle cut and the shakes are thick-isciously great!

So on a Thursday night, around 9pm, I went to grab a sandwich and check their hours. It's true, they stay open until 1AM, except on Sunday. I asked them why, and they said to support the nightshift workers in that complex and anyone else who works at night. That's really cool, because not everyone works a 9-to-5 job. When I was there, I ordered a Large Pastrami Reuben, on Sourdough, made Togo's Style. The sandwich I got was loaded with meat. Nothing skimpy. And it was spicy! Very good customer service! We decided to go to Saigon Yum because we trying to find a place that had Bhan Mi... and since it was just the two of us, we decided to actually dine in. We were seated quickly, so I decided to use the restroom so I can wash my hands (as a sidenote, they're very clean bathrooms.). When I got back to the table and right as I was about to ask Meesha about what the menu looked like, she just said "sit down and take a look for yourself." It was a simple and and smaller than usual menu style. So many great choices, definitely one of those restaurants where you wanna keep coming back so you can try everything. Not only did the pictures look good, but also their menu items and the descriptions we're easy to sort through. Since it was just Meesh and me we decided to go for what we would usually go for when we go to a Vietnamese restaurant if the kids were with us (future planning ). I got the Pho Special with an add on short rib (more like "huge ribe" LoL) with the intent to share. Meesha got he Bhan Mi special, and as always the REAL avocado milk shakes and an iced vietnamese coffee for me (we were at the mid point of our errands run). EVERYTHING WAS GREAT! I do have to mention that their Iced Vietnamese coffee was hands down THEE best out of all the hundreds of restaurants we've been to. Not too watery, bold and strong and just enough milk/cream whatever secret ingredient they use all over the right amount of ice!!! I even personally complimented the lady who made it... that's how good it was. The Pho is everything you would expect and more. The broth was sooooooo good we even brought home the left over. The "Dino" Short Rib was perfect and easily fell off the bone. Just enough noodles to protiens ratio (for the Filipinos who have that rice to ulam ratio preferance). The Bhan Mi was perfect, crunchy outer shell and soft inside. Since we were too anxious to try it all, we forgot to take "Social Media Meal Pics" ‍. Clean, family friendly, spacious, courteous staff, and great food... We are definitely going to add this to our "HAVE TO GO" places nextime we head out that neck of the woods.
