I don't usually buy into conspiracy theories, but if there is one, and there has to be, because I can see no logical way Chubby Freeze, smacked right between 2 behemoth burger giants McDs and the BK Lounge can stay in business. --it would be kinda of like deciding to open a mini-market next to a Wal-Mart. The sign Says "charbroiled" however, the burger patty is sent through a broiler to obtain grill marks and then it's placed on a dirty grill where the cook beats the hell out of a 1/4 inch thick patty with a spatula.. The cashier accepted som cash and then immediately went to the freezer and returned bare hands carrying some chicken strips. She placed them in a deep fryer and took another order. Went here to grab a bite before a show at the Coliseum. Wasn't expecting a lot, and was pleasantly surprised. Good chicken sammich, good fries, and a pretty fantastic peach milk shake. The other customers there were really chatty and friendly. My friend and I kind of got the feeling we stood out like a sore thumb in the neighborhood, but everyone was really nice. Went to Oakland on business and wanted to try a local place. Was definitely happy I took a chance on this one. DELICIOUS milkshakes. They have a ton of flavors and let you mix them. Burgers are made with real meat, definitely better than the mcdonalds next door. Plus, helping locals always makes me feel good. They give you a ton of fries too. Only issue is they don't accept credit cards which I understand for the area, but he let me run mine since I was out of town on business and I was still dressed up! Very nice, only waited maybe 5 minutes. Highly recommend. Don't be deterred by Oakland's reputation, it's a nice place so long as you don't go out when it gets dark and act like a fool. read more

Soft Serve On A Hot Day. Chubby Freeze is one of those old fashion fast food chains that serve burgers and soft serve ice cream. If you are looking for a premium dining experience you will not find it here but the ice cream is pretty good, creamy and flavorful. They serve vanilla, chocolate and vanilla/chocolate swirl and for an additional fifty cents you can get it dipped in the hard shell. They also make malts, milkshakes and sundaes if your sweet tooth serves your appetite. I didn't try any of the food; I'm not big on greasy burgers. This is a really a dive-y kind of joint so don't expect a fancy ambiance. There is plenty of tables inside and they have two arcade games you can entertain yourself or the kids with. It was very hot in there since there aren't any air conditioners but have plenty of outdoor seating to cool down. The service is mediocre, give them your order, pay for your food and pick it up at the counter when its ready! read more

It was a lunch time stroll when instead of my usual Taco Truck fill in the area, I decided to give into the high standards and settle with some down to earth burger joint. They had a steak, cheese, and mushroom sandwich, with fries and a drink for $9. not bad, not great. It was full of chunky pieces of steak, and in the end was dripping with steak juice and melted cheese. I almost had trouble eating the darn thing, but hey, on the bright side, it didn't taste bad. I was staying at the Days Inn nearby and I was hungry so I figured I would give this place a try since I read some good reviews about them. There wasn't any customers in there, maybe it was late at night. I ordered their pastrami sandwich and when I took it back to my hotel room to eat it, I found the pastrami was alittle chewy, not sure how long they have been there. I have had better pastrami sandwich from Subway. Maybe I just ordered the wrong item, but if this place is that good, then all of their items should be good. Fish and chips was ok they are at least hot. The chili was warm and not hot enough to even melt cheese that they put on top of it. The chili also tasted a little bit old or at best may be watered down. I think the best thing that came out of my meal was the coke. The staff however is pleasant and I did not try any of the other items from the menu as this was my first time. I have to say I like chubby freeze the only bad part was they close the doors at 7p so you have to order your food and then either eat in your car or take it home. the young daughter that was working there was very nice. she actually felt bad because we couldn't sit in the lobby to eat, it was cold outside and she wanted open the doors but her father would not let her. It's ok though, she tried. Food was amazing, I got the double bacon burger and my hubby got the triple cheese birger..good sized burgers. The French fries were cooked to perdection. This is the pinnacle of all burger joints! The best value is their classic special which is about $5.89 for a GIANT burger, load of fries, and drink of your choice. They are remodeling so the place is a lot cleaner and it looks a lot nicer, but keeps it's classic feeling with the arcade original pac man. Hit this place up before a Warriors game. The steak and mushroom sandwich was so deliciously gooey, dripping with juice, cheese and mayo, it was kind of difficult to eat. But great nonetheless. Burger and fries were also very good. Fried shrimp and onion rings were your average fried food.
